Danny Brown says that as a series of high profile albums were released before his Old album was released earlier this month, he was evaluating his own project.
“People’s albums was coming out…and I was like, ‘My album is better than that,’” Danny Brown says during an interview with Fuse. “I feel like the only [Rap] album I can honestly say I feel like is better than mine this year is [Kanye West’s] Yeezus, but I feel like maybe just productionwise. As far as rapwise, I feel like I’ve got a way more lyrical album than that.”
Nonetheless, Danny Brown says that his album is a particularly innovative project productionwise.
“If you listen to it from the first song, [it’s like] so old school, early boom bap, early ’90s Hip Hop right there,” Brown says. “And as it goes up, it’s like the different styles of production…If you look at a song like ‘Gremlins’ or ‘Dope Fiend Rental,’ that’s like Wu-Tang [Clan]esque, in some sense. So it went form like boom bap. Nobody even caught that part yet. ‘Till you get to [‘Side B’] ‘Dope Song’—that’s like trap. We’re the Young Jeezy era right then…All the way until we get up to now. It’s like a timeline for Hip Hop, musically, too, with the beats. Nobody figured that out yet.”
Last month, Danny Brown said why making Old was better than making its predecessor, 2011’s XXX.
“I had more time to work on it,” Brown said. “I had more money in my pocket. I’m less stressed out. I’m just having fun and making music so it was just no stress making this album.”
