MC Lyte was honored today with the “I Am Hip Hop Award” at this year’s BET Hip Hop Awards, which aired today (October 15). Former honorees include Rakim, Russell Simmons and Grandmaster Flash. 

Lyte encouraged other women who rap in her speech.

“Please keep the dream alive,” MC Lyte said in her acceptance speech. “I am with you.”

Eve, who presented Lyte with her award, also spoke on Lyte’s significance.

“She set the precedent for female freestylers,” Eve said of MC Lyte, as per eurweb.com. “I’m truly, truly honored. She has meant so much to me in my career.”

Additionally, MC Lyte is set to participate in BET’s reality television program, “Hip Hop Sisters.” The show is set to feature Lyte with fellow women who rap, The Lady Of Rage, Yo Yo, Smooth, Monie Love and Lil Mama.

Lyte is also set to release new music. Her single “Cravin'” is slated to be featured on an upcoming project, which scheduled to drop in 2014.
