It has been reported that Pusha T’s “King Push” was produced by actor Joaquin Phoenix. However, during an interview with XXL today (October 2), Phoenix said he is not responsible for the song.

“While it was widely reported that Pusha T used my beat and that I produced his song, I can’t take any credit,” Phoenix said in a statement to XXL. ”A friend’s son played me his music, and all I did was make an introduction to Kanye [West]’s camp.”

Pusha T said Phoenix produced “King Push” during an interview with Vibe in August.

“When I turned it in in June, [Kanye West] gave me probably two or three new beats,” Pusha said. “One of those beats was from Joaquin Phoenix, and it’s probably gonna be … I want it to be the intro to my album. When I heard it, I knew it was mine, man. Soon as I heard it I was like, ‘Listen, I hope you’re not playing this for me to show me how good this beat is.’ And of course, I ended up with it.”

In September, Pusha T discussed the significance of the song

“It’s just my proclamation to it being my time,” Pusha T said in an interview with MTV. “All eyes on me. ‘King Push.’ I’m saying it. I’m in the best space. I feel. It’s just telling you, all I could give you is my lyrics. That’s all I want to give you. This is all I’m about. I’m not singing hooks to you. This is raw. This is uncut. You’ve gotta listen to me to like me, to love me. This is for that person.”
