On his new album, Nothing was the Same, which was released today (September 24), Drake raps about his relationship with Nicki Minaj on the song “Tuscan Leather.”

“I gotta stay with the family,” Drake raps on the song. “Not even talkin’ to Nicki / Communication is breakin’ / I dropped the ball on some personal shit, I need to embrace it / I’m honest. I make mistakes. I’d be the second to admit it / Think that’s why I need her in my life, to check me when I’m trippin’.”

During an interview with Los Angeles radio station Power 106 today (September 24), Drake said how his relationship with Nicki Minaj has changed since “Tuscan Leather” was recorded.

“The album is a journey, so the first song is not where I’m at in my life right now,” Drake said during the Power 106 interview. “I started this album a year and a half ago, and it did kind of go in chronological order, for the most part. That song kind of picks up at an earlier point in my life. I had done something that I had to just reevaluate and fix. We’re good. We definitely talk. I saw her the other night. It was all love.

“I choose to express personal things in my music and I don’t ever do it with malice,” Drake continued. “I hope that when she hears that line, she understands that what I’m saying is that she’s necessary in my life and that I care about her. It’s never with bad intentions. I did express that, and I did also fix that, which I’m happy about.”

Nicki Minaj spoke about her relationship with Drake in July.

“[Drake’s] so talented,” Minaj said. “Sometimes, we’ve seen this. Sometimes when you’re really intelligent and you’re really talented, you also think a lot. Sometimes your mind is racing with thoughts. It is what it is. People go through their own motions and you’ve gotta respect it and keep it moving. We all love the team. We all love [Lil] Wayne. That’s what’s gonna always hold us together. Drake is my baby because that’s how it was when we came in. So whenever I think of him, ‘That’s my baby.’ Whatever is going on now, obviously we’re all very busy and you know, shit happens. It gets a little hard to have a real connection when people are on different sides of the world, working on different things. You just never know who people got in their ear or what they’re feeling or maybe they felt wronged in some way. I don’t know. I just know that Drake is my baby and Wayne is my everything.”
