AZ Says He & Nas Started A Trend On "Illmatic"

AZ says that "Life's a Bitch" started a trend and "a whole new movement" as he recalls his contribution to "Illmatic."

AZ recently recalled his contribution to Nas' 1994 album, Illmatic. AZ was featured on "Life's a Bitch," a song often touted as one of the acclaimed album's standout selections.

"That shit started a trend," AZ said in a recent interview with XXL. "We started a whole new movement with 'Life’s a Bitch' and that’s how we felt when we first entered the game. 'Life’s a bitch and then you die / That’s why we get high / 'Cause you never know / When you’re gonna go.' So, we just gotta live it up. Ain’t no remix on life. You only got one life. Whatever. You know? 'Visualizing the realism of life and actuality / Fuck who’s the baddest, a person’s status depends on salary.' Get money and live. Get married. Enjoy life until you sit back home. That’s the paradise."

AZ also recalled the chemistry that he had with Nas when the two recorded the song.

"[Me and Nas] had an energy," AZ said. "I think we both held it and balanced that record out. ‘Cause without him, that record wouldn’t have been what it was. Without me, that record wouldn’t have been what it was. We was speaking the same language, but coming from different angles again. It just meshed so perfect that it got our point across. It got our point across so beautiful with that harmonic balance that really reached the target that we was aiming for."

AZ is currently gearing up for the release of his next album, Do or Die 2, the upcoming sequel to his 1995 debut album. This month, AZ released his newest mixtape, Last of a Dying Breed 2, the sequel to June's Last of a Dying Breed

Lol, this punk-ass thinks of himself as some sort of G.O.A.T? Bitch, please, you mightve been great in Life's A Bitch, but after that, you remained forgotten and abandoned about never to see the light of day as you return just to piggyback Nas. Your voice-overs destroyed the 36 Chambers album for me. "Yeah nigga, lets get this shit poppin, yo for (enter Artist name), you know how we kill them hoes and murdah them bitches, sooooon. Yeah boiiii, yo (enter Artist name) kill the beat." For 1 fuckin minute! And then you do the same type of voice-over on the damn hook continously. It's like DUDE SHUT THE FUCK UP AND LET THE BEAT DO THE TALKING INSTEAD OF YOU. Oh, and the hook for Life's A Bitch was horrendous.

Nas started no trends, he's always been a follower. AZ created the trend of renegading people on their own shit when he embarrassed Nas on their first track.

AZ use to be that nigga. Checkout thegrandreport, they got some good videos on there

AZ has classic songs and has some of the illest lyrics, the only thing that i feel he lacked was great produtions on alot of his albums

great production (or lack of) kills 99% of great emcees' careers. Without a great beat (and I'm not talking about something poppy and forgettable - I mean a great, melodic, memorable beat) the track is dead in the water.

So... what exactly was the "trend" and "whole new movement" that Nas and AZ started with the song "Life's a B!tch"?

OB4CL 2 lacked the crazy spontaneity of the original, it was a very good album but some of the tracks were not worthy of the OB4CL title.

AZ and Nas lyrically compliment each other, only difference is one is mainstream and other isn't. If they made an album together in 2013, it would be some powerful shit

Dude, stop that shit. Nas been doing mainstream shit since 1996 when he was quick to jump on the mafioso train.

    • R.Pgh

Nas isn't all that 'mainstream'. He became popular when people actually cared about lyrics, and his fan base never left. I don't think he's still earning new fans because he's not making the dumb ass radio songs that kids like.

Doe or Die was a decent 4 mic worthy album. A sequel has to be made equal or better. Raekwon was close with Cuban Linx II but it lacked something.

they need to do an album together

nigga you started nothing! You first is a classic and everything which followed was the same but then weaker. You sound nowadays outdated as fuck, you take no risks always the same route. And fuck a sequel, that shit is getting lame.
