While promoting her new daytime talk show, “The Queen Latifah Show,” noted lyricist Queen Latifah took some time to speak on women in Hip Hop during an appearance on the Rickey Smiley Morning Show.
Queen Latifah, who last released a studio album in 2009, was asked to share the names of the female emcees she’s been most impressed by over the past 15 years. In response, the rapper/actress expressed her belief that artists like Lil Kim, Missy Elliott, and Foxy Brown have yet to be topped.
Additionally, Queen Latifah spoke on the need for there to be room for numerous female lyricists as opposed to there being only one rapper or a handful of rappers who remain the focus of each era.

“I still think some of the best ones that have done it have yet to be topped. I still don’t think anybody has topped the whole era of Foxy, Kim, Missy, Eve, me on the tail end kinda things,” the soon-to-be television host explained. “I’m still looking forward to it not just being a one-at-a-time female rapper thing. I mean, I think Nicki Minaj is great, but I think we definitely need to blow up some of the other females that are out there.”
Set to air on September 16, “The Queen Latifah Show” is executive produced by Will Smith and Jada Pinkett-Smith, two people Queen Latifah says the show wouldn’t have been possible without.
“It took Will and Jada to be involved in this for me to really do it, to be honest with you,” said Queen Latifah. “Because I have done a talk show before and I learned a lot doing that show, but I knew then—what I learned then was that I really had to make it me. It had to be something that was really, really me in order for me to love going in there and working that hard and making it happen. And doing it every day. But I’ve known Will and Jada since I was a teenager. We’ve grown up together…Will has helped me out with various things throughout the years.”
