Immortal Technique Says Rich Black People Are Being "Mentally Enslaved"

Immortal Technique speaks on Kanye West's "New Slaves" songs and says that he "absolutely" believes rich black people are being "mentally enslaved."

Immortal Technique's perspective on all things political in Hip Hop is often thought-provoking. When the topic of Kanye West's poignant song, "New Slaves" was brought up in a recent interview with Vlad TV, the Harlem native gave his opinion on the matter.

"I don't even know why he said that, did he say that to evoke thought?" Tech said when asked what he thought about the song. "I wouldn't say that rich black people are the new slaves, that would be ridiculous, but are rich black people being mentally enslaved? Absolutely, because if they had any sense they would start their own industries that benefited some of their own people."

Immortal Technique admits that he wasn't sure what Kanye's motive was with the song and that he hasn't even heard it, but he said he did agree that people can be wealthy and enslaved at the same time.

"This is my disclaimer, I don't know what his mental state was, I haven't heard the song so I don't know what the fuck else was said in that verse or what was said in conjunction with that verse," he explained. "But can people be fabulously wealthy and still be blind as fuck? Yes...they can."

During the same sit down, Tech previously said that people will forget about Trayvon Martin and that "the government should be willing to sacrifice itself for the benefit of the people."

These guys are showing off in weird ways. There's only one immortal technique that I can think of, and most of us do it privately.

    Immortal Technique is mentally retarded.

    • JohnDoe

You wouldn't think that if you could read, instead of just looking at the pictures. Maybe you'll have a retarded baby and get a chance to understand what that really means. If you're going to insult someone, at least base it on reality and substantiate your argument.

He didnt say that, he is simply saying wealth should be shared, if you hold on to it then it enslaves you. It is so hard to see the burden of money if you only seek to pleasure yourself with it.

    • Anonymous

haha can you even read? he said rich black people should open up a business or an industry that benefits their people ...

  • poor

you say shit when you get nothing but trying having $200 million and see what happens to your mind. don't say shit when you've never experience shit... you people don't know the fear of those who have money, go ask Hammer,DMX and Tyson its horrible to have $ and next year you have nothing and cant get it back when its all gone... if you want $ you work and fight for it and you have to have masters in that league you wish to join because they've paid their shit before you got there.. its a system but you will never no because you have been there. so work hard, get money and protect your family and God will do the rest you're not the creator of the world if God wants this world to have another concert of living he would have done it that way.. (I never asked for nothin I don't demand of myself Honesty, loyalty, friends and then wealth Death before dishonor and I tell you what else I tighten my belt 'fore I beg for help.) Hov

black hip hop artists are all controlled by labels and told what to sell the the youth. everyone knows drugs money sex and the tough guy gangsta image sells because young confused people find it cool so labels encourage it and the artists go along with it.

If you're poor or care about the greater good for regular people you should respect this man's intellect and intentions. The only people that should dislike this guy are the 1%. If you aren't in that camp and have issues with Immortal it's likely because you can't comprehend the shit he's talking about, probably because you've been systematically brainwashed into being a good consumer that doesn't question the system. I can't believe a hiphop magazine has so many idiots trying to bring down a person that stands strong for their people. I doubt that many of the people here are privileged enough to be representing the perspective of the elite because they are in that camp.(those are the only people who would be acting on their own interests to try and undermine this guy) The reality is most people are just too dumb and uninformed about the reality of the world today to understand what he's talking about. So keep buying shit and listening to the commercial rappers that don't care about anyone but themselves, your legacy on this earth will be that of a brainwashed consumer.

    • Knowles

True, this is the most logical and coherent comment on this post. Commercial feeds on the ignorant consumer. Immortal tech is intellect and the people that relate to what he is saying are those that can see how the commercial industry makes music lose value and creativity.

  • edwin muchenya

.....if you don't like underground are part of the lost generation...

    • your_mom

A brainwashed generation - too apathetic to look into the reasons the world is such a mess. When someone contradicts their programming they get upset.

  • Anonymous

he say black owned this and black owned that but why those he create a divisions and all about revolution? how have company own by all people

  • beavus n butthead

  • Tyler

People mad cuz I dont listen to immortal tech-of-the-nique, or any of that underground bull-of-the-sheet.

  • Jimman

I agree with you earl. No one gives a fuck about the shit immortal spits about and if they do it's a very small person. You can talk the shit but you ain't about exposing or fighting shit. The powers that be would kill this clown and he knows it. The man is whack and he tried spitting that political bullshit when he battled poster boy. Like seriously man, it's a battle on freestyle Friday how fucking stupid is this guy? And to the other morons who say people who don't listen to this guy are ignorant? You're being the ignorant fucks who show they can't take opposite opinions. Your stuck in a small box pretending to be an expert on how the powers that be run shit. Shut the fuck up and immortal don't know shit. Take that dictionary shit out of here! It's ok once in a blue but all the time? You're just as bad as these pricks who talk about jewelry and money all the fucking time, it's whack!

    • Namaste

Jimman, you should heed your own advice. You're the one who needs a dictionary because quite frankly, your choice of words do not resonate high on the intelligence scale. In addition to this, you really don't have a clue on what you're talking about, evident on how incoherent your statements are.

    • MusicFiend

I'm a political science major with a minor in sociology and I can assure you he knows what he is talking about. Agreed, in VOL 1 and 2 he was young and overly conspiratorial but if you have heard 3rd world or Martyr you would see the progression lyrically and the leaning away from nonsense like the Illuminanti - 9/11 shit and more into real social affairs. At the very least he is TRYING to educate. More than most can say.

    • Anonymous

Do you even have an ounce of knowledge of which Immortal does. because if you there would be no need for such whack useless blaber as the first comment above

    • Anonymous

he's not even a nice guy

    • Shone Jones

Truth. And folks wonder why he's the poster child of Smart-dumb individuals.

  • Anonymous

Why does this guy care what Kanye does? Douche.

  • L

It's odd, the first man who actually makes an accurate comment about black people gets slandered by the few who have decided to comment. Look around you, most races generally band together, Indian, Asian, white etc. But for some reason, black men and women are conflicted to thinking that we must confront each other in our menial struggle for material things under the guise of the poverty that most of us live in. The one's who have made it out, do they give back? Maybe they give enough to charities to become eligible for their tax breaks, maybe they enter Hollywood, make a movie with an all black cast, start a record label and put the talented youngsters in the spotlight, maybe they go back to their neighbourhoods and make some generous donations for a day, maybe. But the problem is, we all know what the entertainment industry is as a whole, it creates jobs for those who have already made it out - it doesn't do anything for the ones still struggling, not really. We make it out and stay out, never looking back to the world that raised us. The one's that do are stupid enough to follow a life of crime, thinking that's the way to be. We need industries to match those that currently hold monopoly on the world, but I can safely say, no-one has branched out and truly done that. Please, correct me if I'm wrong, I'm merely saying it based on what I see.

    • Anonymous

      how could it be done

    • Anonymous

HR - well said, you are a wise man. Your post inspired me.

    • RC

Interesting thought, my response would though corruption starts at the top not at the bottom. It's the only true example of the "trickle Down" theory.

    • Harlem's Reckoning

Well said but.... I'll answer your post with a question. Is money the fix-all for "our" problems? Or can it be the absence of stabilized families and support systems to ensure that the youth are mentally and morally stable? Who's responsible for YOUR kid(s) being out in the street doing God knows what with God knows who? The answer to that question has nothing to do with money and everything to do with responsibility. I find it interesting that Tech and others call out the "industry" but won't call out his right hand man who's probably ducking child support or hustling in the streets right now. The same way people want to blame the President for every little thing but give the local Alderman a free pass. The difference between the wealthy and the poor is that one side has been "enslaved" by something that works and the other side by something that does not. Obviously, its not that simple in all cases but in many cases it is. If we want to fix our problems on a large scale, its got to be done from the very bottom, the foundation. That means not giving a fuck what Oprah, Jay-Z, Puffy etc. do with their money, and more giving a fuck with what you are directly in control of. Besides, ever heard of a wealthy person taking advice on how to be successful from a poor person? Good post BTW

  • imho

this comment just goes to show whether your black or white and get money you dont givve a fuck about noone but changes you no matter who you are or what race you are.

  • wow

so many ignorants here is saying the truth you suckas

whats ignorant is that you comment about a song like you know what your talking about...while admitting you didnt even listen 2 it.

  • fred

" that he hasn't even heard it" Seriously, its a 4 minute song. How can you form an opinion on something you haven't even heard.

  • Margie W. Mitchell

what Russell said I am amazed that someone can get paid $9216 in 4 weeks on the internet. did you read this website... Ab-Souls album then Jay Rocks. Then Black Hippy. (I think its to create hype for each 4 so when they get together again BAM)

  • Anonymous

So we have a rich hispanic calling out rich blacks?

    • Raseul

He is an Afro-Latino like me. Pitbull is latino and is he not white? Latino is not a race but a cultural group who consist of mainly African, European, and Native Amerindian. I am Brazilian and Puerto Rican. Brazilians are majority African ethnogroup and Puerto Ricans are on the mixed side of African blood.

  • Earl Simpson

I always found immortal technique & lupe fiasco to be full of shit! Shut the fuck up! Quit acting like you're intelligent and all of your albums are the same boring protest race, government is corrupt bullshit material! Who cares? You can't do shit about it anyway!

  • kkk

  • "Louis Vuitton Don"

I think Kanye was talking about poor black people being slaves to brands and labels and shit. Not the rich who already have money to buy whatever they want. He's contradicting himself anyway, because he promotes materialism and designer brands more then any other artist in hiphop.

  • Temper

"It's always funny to me when some rappers are trying to act all intellectual and shit fuck outta here." Go back and listen to Lil Wayne and 2 Chainz son! You don't know nothing bout Immortal Technique!! You are the reason they play stupid shit on the radio.
