Nas Praises J. Cole With His Added Verse On “Let Nas Down”
J. Cole’s “Let Nas Down” served as a passionate and self-explanatory confession of his greatest industry disappointment. The Born Sinner track peaked at the number two spot on our top 10 two weeks ago and now, with an added verse from the song’s subject himself, tops our list this week. While the first major single of Cole’s career, “Work Out” in 2011, may have been a bit lackluster and stale to many of the North Carolina emcee’s initial fans, it was Nas’ disapproval of the radio friendly hit that obviously left the greatest mark on Cole. With “Let Nas Down,” and his sophomore release in general, Cole has obviously reoriented himself a bit. Nas’ added verse finds the Queensbridge rapper drawing parallels between his own budding career in the ’90s and Cole’s current rise, the verse also serves as an inspiringly weighty vote of confidence: “While you was writing down my rhymes I was just trying to show you/ That if you say what’s on your mind, you can stand the test of time / Now I’m playing Born Sinner loud, saw you live, rock the crowd / Like wow / You made your nigga Nas proud.”
One Of The Tracks Accompanying Drake’s Announcement Of His Next Album Strikes Big
Last weekend, Drake firmed up the details regarding his upcoming third album, Nothing Was The Same, scheduled for a September 17 release date. Along with that announcement, Drake released four new songs including this week’s number two occupant, “Jodeci Freestyle,” featuring J. Cole. The track, an obvious ode to ’90s R&B and Soul group Jodeci, finds Drake and then Cole comparing their reception in the female crowd to that of Jodeci themselves: “Oh well, bitches paint OVO on their toenails / And show up at the show, the afterparty and the hotel / That five star in your city, they know where we at / I hit the lobby women screaming like Jodeci’s back, nigga.”

Two of the three other songs Drake released at the same time also found a place on our list with “The Motion” featuring Sampha at number four and a Drake guest verse on Migos’ “Versace Remix” at number eight.

Another track that got bumped down two spots but held strong a second week in a row is the thirteen year old Jay-Z and Beanie Sigel collaboration “Where Have You Been,” a song motivated by the lack of a father figure. This week, Jay released information on a forthcoming song from his next album reflecting on his own position as a father; speaking about the track, titled “Jay-Z Blue,” the Reasonable Doubt emcee said: “It deals with, you know, my pop left when I was young. So, he didn’t teach me how to be a man nor how to raise a child or treat a woman. So, of course, my karma, the two things I need, I don’t have. And I have a daughter…It’s the paranoia of not being a good dad.”
Big Sean Enlists Jhene Aiko And Lil Wayne For His Next Single
After releasing his debut album almost exactly two years ago today (Finally Famous was released on June 28, 2011), Big Sean is currently prepping his sophomore record, Hall Of Fame, for an August release. One of the album’s first singles dropped earlier this week in the form of the Jhene Aiko and Lil Wayne featuring “Beware,” a track centered around Sean’s exploits and corresponding relationship troubles: “I got somebody baby mama calling me daddy / I drank too much, please call me a cabby / Penthouse after party hoes want that addy / Fuck they can ride with us, crawl in a Caddy.”
