Fat Joe Sentenced To Four Months In Federal Prison For Tax Evasion

Fat Joe was sentenced to four months in federal prison today for failing to pay taxes on nearly $3 million of income. He was also ordered to pay a $15,000 fine.

Fat Joe was sentenced today to four months in federal prison today (June 24) for failing to pay taxes on nearly $3 million of income during a two-year period, according to cliffviewpilot.com. The rapper, whose given name is Joseph Cartagena, was also ordered to pay a $15,000 fine and faces one year of supervised release, according to the report.

The 42-year-old rapper pled guilty to tax evasion in December and said that he would pay what he owed. "At the end of the day, I'm paying all the money back that's owed—actually I have and I'ma just go like a man, stand up," he said during a May interview with MTV's "RapFix Live." "You gotta understand we hire guys who are supposed have Harvard degrees to take care of us."

Yet federal prosecutors said Fat Joe failed to pay taxes on income from 2007 through 2010, which the judge considered during sentencing, according to cliffviewpilot.com.

Fat Joe remains free on $250,000 bail and must report to the U.S. Bureau of Prisons August 26 to begin serving his sentence, according to the report. The Bronx, New York rapper apologized to his family, friends and fans before U.S. Magistrate Judge Cathy Waldor handed down the sentence, according to the report.

A member of the Diggin' In The Crates collective, Fat Joe released the single "Flow Joe" in 1993. Through his Terror Squad company and in conjunction with Loud Records, Fat Joe released Big Pun's 1998 album, Capital Punishment, which was certified platinum. Fat Joe has also collaborated with Jennifer Lopez, R. Kelly and others throughout his career.

"It's not that they don't want to pay it's that they never went to school and don't know the accounting and financial side of business" That's such a bullshit excuse. Fat Joe doesn't strike me as a dumb ass. He's been around since the 90's and shouldn't be broke at all. If the average person can invest modest sums of money, then a supposedly "well off" entertainer should be able to function and know how his money is doing at any time.

"You gotta understand we hire guys who are supposed have Harvard degrees to take care of us." you could pay some stuck up white dude to do your takes for thousands of dollars, who will teach you how to cut corners to pay as little taxes as possible or you could just go down the street to H&R Block and pay a few hundred dollars do it legally.

I guess if the stuck up white dude wasn't available you could get the urban dipshit who thinks a 401k is a video game.

That's the dumbest shit I've ever heard, not one person on HR has a CPA designation they can do an employees tax return cause that shit is simple and a monkey can do it but big money is wayyy over their heads. He hired crap advisors who didn't maximize his deductions and didn't put his money in assets that are protected from creditors. The more commas in the persons net worth the more they gotta pay for good advice. The point is whoever did his financials apparently cut no corners cause if he was makin' 1 millie over 2 years that's 500,000k a year he's stuck at the highest bracket dude needed to bring his earned income under 400,000 to not get hit with such a hard IRS hammer

Four months is ridiculous decision. Basically he failed to pay like 7-800k and that's all what he got? There was rumours about an estimated 2 years sentence, if he managed to reduce it to 4 months just by pleading guilty he has a real good lawyer. I'd say it's almost worth it ...

"You gotta understand we hire guys who are supposed have Harvard degrees to take care of us." That's a really dumb statement. For all he knew his accountant got his degree online. Doesn't change the fact you have to know where your money is at all times, especially if you're making it fast and spending faster.

Why are rappers so ignorant in thinking they dont need to pay tax

A money manager wouldn't have done him any good cuz brokerage accounts, mutual funds, and money markets aren't creditor protected. What he needed was to set up an LLC to maximize deductions and set up a SEP to write off 50,000 of his earned income and make his wife an W-2 employee to set up one for her as well. For his kids who are 18 and over he could have put them on his payroll and set up an Restricted executive bonus arrangement to shift income to them since they are in lower tax brackets. He could have shifted income to his parents in lower tax brackets as well. What he needed from his advisors weren't great stock market returns just good write offs and most importantly creditor protection in case he gets sued

Real talk you can tell which rappers hire the right pros 50 Cent (I guess his one helps Banks and Yayo), Em, Jay, Kanye, never catch them in trouble with the IRS

    • Rap Fan

It's not that they don't want to pay it's that they never went to school and don't know the accounting and financial side of business. You have to realize these rappers and athletes are from the hood and most of them dropped out to pursue their career. So when these guys hire people to do business for them, they get ripped off and get into trouble because they don't understand. Also, since they fail to realize they get taxed they spend all their money upfront and forget about keeping 40% back for taxes which is why they always end up broke. Hiring the right financial professionals keeps you from going broke or getting in trouble with the IRS.
