Windy City rapper and Yeezus crafter Kanye West caused a minor uproar earlier in the year when it was revealed that one particular record on his now-released album would be titled “I Am A God.” And during a rare interview with W Magazine, Kanye went on to reveal the exact incident that inspired him to create the controversial song.
According to Kanye, he was drawn to the recording studio when he was told that he’d be allowed to attend one Paris Fashion Week runway show only if he chose not to attend any other shows during the semi-annual fashion fete.
“So the next day I went to the studio with Daft Punk, and I wrote ‘I Am a God,’Sh” Kanye revealed. “Cause it’s like, Yo! Nobody can tell me where I can and can’t go. Man, I’m the No. 1 living and breathing rock star. I am Axl Rose; I am Jim Morrison; I am Jimi Hendrix. You can’t say that you love music and then say that Kanye West can’t come to your show! To even think they could tell me where I could and couldn’t go is just ludicrous. It’s blasphemous—to rock ’n’ roll, and to music.”

Later in the interview, Kanye further elaborated on the creation of the song as he commented on his lack of desire to defend “I Am A God” and merely credited the song as being a representation of “rock ‘n’ roll” and “rap music.”
“I made that song because I am a god,” said Kanye. “I don’t think there’s much more explanation. I’m not going to sit here and defend shit. That shit is rock ’n’ roll, man. That shit is rap music. I am a god. Now what?”
Released on June 18, Yeezus serves as Kanye West’s sixth studio album.
