Kanye West's "Yeezus" Leads J. Cole's "Born Sinner" In First Week Sales Projections

According to first week sales projections, Kanye West's "Yeezus" leads the way with J. Cole's "Born Sinner" and Mac Miller's "Watching Movies with the Sound Off" trailing Yeezy.

J. Cole may not like first week sales reports but they are in regarding this much-discussed week in Hip Hop. Billboard has released a new report featuring projections for this week, placing Kanye West at the top of the list.

According to the report, Kanye West's Yeezus will lead the way with 360,000-380,000 copies sold. As expected by many who projected earlier this month, J. Cole's Born Sinner follows with 150,000-200,000. Mac Miller trails with his latest offering, Watching Movies with the Sound Off, coming in third with approximately 100,000 copies sold.

J. Cole recently said he was not fond of first week sales reports. Via Twitter, the rapper said that they are ruining Hip Hop.

Kanye and Cole will likely have two Rap albums sell over 100,000 copies in the same week, a feat last reached by Nicki Minaj's Pink Friday and Kanye's own, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy in November 2010. If Cole, West and Miller all reach that milestone, it will be the first time three Rap albums sold over 100,000 copies in the same week since 2006, when Jay-Z (Kingdome Come), Snoop Dogg (Tha Blue Carpet Treatment) and Tupac (Pac's Life) did so.

UPDATE: Billboard's sources add that J. Cole's Born Sinner "should sell 270,000 to 290,000—with 300,000 easily in reach."

I people really think that Kanyes new album is geed then you are fucking delusional and need to get your ears fixed. That shit is hard to even listen to.

  • arab

yeezy season hating ass niggas i aint even heard born sinner and i wont bitches!!!!

    • Co-sign

Y'all screw these haters down here Yeezus all day over born sinner, Kanye could make a j.cole album in like 2 days.

  • true critic

Born Sinner is honestly one of the best albums I have heard in a long time. Kanye's new album is a bunch of the most horrible things all stuffed in one. j cole will have the best cd of the year but he won't win the award because maclemore is too popular to lose right now.

  • Anonymous

"Nope. That there's more to life than money" Which is ironic considering he's making money hand over fist right now.

  • Anonymous

Nas wasn't anywhere near platinum though. No way the grammy committee was going to award an old rapper who can't sell anymore an award for simply getting another album out.

    • Anonymous

Nas just released an album recently and it did good numbers so I dont know what the fuck you are talking about. Stop fucking hating

  • Anonymous

"Doesn't mean it's right" If LIG would have sold more I bet Nas would have walked away with the grammy.

    • Anonymous

Or Def Jam wanted their artists to win on merits and didn't want to pay for the platinum package. I guess nobody remembers the Chris Brown situation where the guy from the Academy got fired, probably because if the truth leaked the show and institution would lose all credibility. And I expect Macklemore & Lewis to win numerous awards, conceptual albums like that don't surface very often.

  • Anonymous

"And they lost me almost completely when Drake took home Best Rap Album over Nas and Roots" They reward the most popular artists. That's the whole idea, and something that has been going on for years.

Watch Macklemore get shunned from Best Rap Album nomination at the grammy's. Even though his album is better than 95% of the crap that gets nominated. Macklemore isn't an amazing lyricist, but guy always has a message and spits some real shit most the time. Even Thrift Shop has a message.

YEEZUS is complete garbage and the word is spreading...Kanye will take the #1 spot first week and then we can just sit back and watch it fall the fuck off the charts for good like the trash that it is...Hopefully Kanye will get back to making real music after this Yeezus bullshit...and this is coming from a fan...

    • WTF

A subpar fan at best!! this album was good top to bottom Kanye has always gone against the grain he's not going to change now

  • Anonymous

those grammy's are bought so i dont let it persuade me to buy albums... and just because kanye put a bunch of space sounds from draft punk, and been out longer doesnt mean he made a better album ... he didnt even give u 5 good tracks out of a meer 10.. those beats are so distorted u cant get the point if any.. j cole hands down took this bout with fresh beats by timbo and lyrical flow to shit on the competition... they even turn'd rapper Logic into a fan

    • Andre.CO

The Grammy's lost me a lot when Wayne won Best Rap Album for Carter III. They lost me even more when Cole didn't get a Best Rap Album nomination, yet Carter IV and Pink Friday did. And they lost me almost completely when Drake took home Best Rap Album over Nas and Roots, and when 2 Chainz was nominated. They also lost me when Jay and Kanye won grammy's for the average Watch the Throne album. That album was good production, with average flow and sub par lyrics. If you're going to have crappy subject content, at least have some witty and complex rhymes, Kanye never has.

    • Anonymous

They still have to win the grammy. It's no different than an actor getting a star on the Hollywood walk of fame, but having to buy the spot.

  • YESSIR

I don't understand any of you people right now, 1st of all Tupac is dead, quit worshipping him, he was good and all but get over it, 2nd, Tupac and Lil Wayne were bros, they made a song together they hung out so stop comparing, Tupac was good with the old shit Wayne is good with the new shit

  • Anonymous

    > He's just saying that because he's losing. >

  • Trillmatic

Kanye is at the top because of his illuminati music, j cole doesn't fuck with that, he comes straight up son!

  • Andre.CO

Damn. Never though Cole would go up from his first, considering the buzz was major for his first album, and even though Born Sinner had buzz.....it didn't seem as big. But 270-300K is really like 500-600K 10 years ago. Cole is here to stay. Solid numbers for Mac too. Watching Movies... really wasn't a bad album. It's definitely a step in the right direction, and it's a solid album. I found myself going through the whole album. Mac needs to get with a major label though. His first album and Macadelic produced some singles that charted, Frick Park Market/Party on 5th Ave/Loud but I don't think anything on Watching Movies... is going to the radio. He should have pushed Watching Movies and Objects in the Mirror as his singles. Goosebumpz and SDS were bad choices.

    • Andre.CO

Yeah I just don't know if he'll continue to keep his buzz his whole career as an independent though. He went down from 144K to around 100K max now. So if this all stays the same, his next album may fall to 50-60K,, and than lower again on his 4th album. He's only 21, I think he'll sign a major label deal within a year. If Blue Slide Park and Watching Movies were pushed by a major label like Def Jam or something, he may have done 150-200K first wee for both albums. But of course, he'd take less money home. I just think if he wants to stay relevant for the next 5-10 years as a major hip hop artist, he'll go with a label.

    • lesa

i agree with humza95 he gets 10x more money as independent artist than he would with major label

    • humza95

Mac Miller should stay independant, what independant rapper has sold over 100,000 copies first week in a while? his first album sold around 140K - 150K, Mac miller is a successful independant artist

  • Anonymous

I dont understand fans fascination with album sales. It really has nothing to do with you as a fan. I think people just need to feel like their part of the "in-crowd" or something.

    • Anonymous

I agree with chewi28 but the competition should be about talent and less about numbers. The reason battles like Nas vs Jay, and LL vs Canibus, and Common vs Ice Cube were so great was because it was about who came with the best lyrics not who was most popular. When the music is more about talent and rapping ability instead of numbers and popularity we the fan get a better enjoyment out of it because we make the rappers prove to us that they are worthy.

    • chewi28

For some it may be about feeling in the in crowd but i think for most it's apart of the competitive spirit of rap. Kanye "vs." J. Cole is like the Spurs vs. the Heat, you've got the season vet. who's poised...as far as his music goes...versus the young talent still managing his hype and proving himself...granted Cole WILL accomplish that even if he doesn't beat out Kanye, but what a statement that would be right? it's all apart of the game

  • gay fish

first and foremost id like to say North West is a RETARTED name for a baby. Secondly, Kanye puts on the biggest tough guy act, but he would get smacked so hard in his fake ass jaw. Finally, you have to be thirsty as fk to wife Kim K because she has NO talent and got ran through by so many niggez. Fuck outta here Kan-gay West you little pssy.

    • Puhlease

You seem to have alot of hate for someone you don't personally know and someone whos accomplish more than you would in two life times,, you should know your roll because if Kim Kardashian wanted to fuck you, you wouldn't hink twice about it, unless your the Gay-fish by the way did you pay south park for stealing their idea, you wanna talk about NO talent you can't even come up with your own diss..pathetic

As an accountant for YMCMB I can confirm Jay Z does not want to go to war with YMCMB. Wayne already said that if Jay Z disses one more time, he will go Mel Gibson on him. The YMCMB army is built for war. Wayne a certified gangsta. He got 3 tear drops, did a bid on the island and all that. Wayne ethered rappers and even caused permanent damage to Dez Bryant's knee. Jay is wack. All Wayne has to do is throw him a rock and Jay will fuck his life up again

Lol no one is mentioning mac miller in the comments.. personally i've heard of his name few times and i'm sure he did 1 or 2 episodes of punked i think which were crap.. never heard a single song from him tho. Is he worth looking up?

    • Anonymous

Mac Miller sounds nothing like MGK tho. Mac is a college pop rapper-turned-weird underground artistic rapper. If you like Earl Sweatshirt type shit you'll maybe like him.

    • Anonymous

People like him for the same reason people like MGK..hip hop community doesn't care about these rappers.

  • Anonymous

damn, yeezus going strong. 370k!! thats highest 1st week sales on 2013

  • Nasstill@it

I'm not gonna front. I was one of those who talked trash about Born Sinner as I was not that impressed the first time I listened to it. But after a few listens I can say this album is almost as good as FNL. A definite contender for album of the year. Yeezus is still trash though.

  • jerryc

I would just like to comment on one thing here: Rolling Stone and some of the other various magazines have given incredible rap albums pretty average ratings right away. They then go back 10 years later and realize how fckin wrong they were, and give the albums what they deserve. They do everything for shock value. If people like something, then they wont. Its the same for a lot of movie critics. They wanted to be sophisticated and different. Dr Dre's 2001-one of the best albums ever made, and a classic in every sense of the word- received 4 out of 5 stars from Rolling Stone. Biggies life after Death received 3 and a half out of 5 stars. Stillmatic received 3 out of 5 stars. Now I dont know about you hip hop fans, but to me, those are three of the top 15 or so rap albums ever made. Those define classics. You can play them 1,000 times and still ride with them no matter what. For this reason, I take everything that rolling stone and the others say with a grain of salt. They clearly dont know what a good rap album is.

  • Anonymous

I picked up all 3, personally I like them all the same and it really depends on your own interpretation

J Cole's album is actually a hiphop album with hip hop beats and real rhymes, unlike Yeezus with half the album with autotune and non-hiphop beats, Bound 2 is the only song where he rapped... other songs he only rapped 1 verse...

  • Anonymous

J Cole will have a Drake audience if he starts singing with autotune like Drake, that's all what's missing

  • Anonymous

People have high expectations for J Cole, like he's the next Nas, let the boy grow and mature please

If Born Sinner is going to sell more than Yeezus, it's Kanye's own fault

Hey, dentaldambitch. Get a life and stop trolling HipHopDX. Nobody believes your lies. Billboard and HitsDailyDouble said that Yeezus will do 375-400k 1st week, Born Sinner will do 290-300k 1st week, and WMWTSO will do 90-100k 1st week. Bitch.

You're the troll here. RIAA helps with billboard calculating the prediction. This week there has been a mixup. The copies meant for IANAHB2 and Hotel California were mistakingly assigned to Yeezus and Born Sinner.

    • Anonymous

Why should we believe you, dentladambitch? Everything you post is a lie.

    • Anonymous

Nope. You're the troll. Your statement is full of shit. You never talked to anyone at RIAA, who doesn't do any sales projections. Even if you did talk to them and they told you that, they're lying and are %100 inaccurate.

Cole doing what he has to. I am not sure the Release date had much of a bearing on his sales. I was waiting for the album patiently, copped 2 copies and would have done so next week. Ye album wasn't to my liking. I cant call it garbage, but after all the day 1 spins I gave it, I doubt I will listen to it again.

It's amazing how much saying you're going to drop the same day as Kanye helps your buzz. No one was checking for J Cole before he said that. His articles on here had 15-20 comments max. His singles had no buzz, no one was talking about this dude at all...People were still focused on Kendrick. Then all of a sudden he says he wants to go against Kanye and look how much he sells. 50 Cent was in a similar situation, but remember how much his sales declined on his follow up album (Went from selling 700,000 first week to 100,000) Unless J Cole can get lucky enough do a deal like Jay-Z or leech off a bigger artist for the next album, I don't see him moving units again. His next album will most likely sell under 100,000 units. I'm not impressed.

    • Anonymous

and he makes pretty good beats too. and born sinner was released under his dreamville label too.

    • foreal

on top of what ^^^ said, he also produces his whole album. Which means instead of paying other people to make beats, he prolly gets to keep that money instead of paying it out.

    • Anonymous

hahaha u jealous of cole. its called business ethic fool, if born sinner came out later it wouldnt have sold this much. also, J cole was executive producer on his two albums, it means he has a lot of brains in his head unlike artists like chief keef who gave all his money to jim iodine and kanye who had rick rubin being executive producer just for the production he did.

    • foreal

"It's amazing how much saying you're going to drop the same day as Kanye helps your buzz. No one was checking for J Cole before he said that" speak for yourself. J Cole i am sure a lot of people were checking for Cole before that. Just cuz you dont like J Cole doesnt mean he wont sell.

  • NAH

Fuck the sales, Born Sinner is more entertaining with better beats. Sales don't mean shit if you're still a wack nigga on tour performing, doing shows.

  • Kramer

I still dont understand why so many people even RESPECT Kanye to buy his album. He is a horrible person.

    • Anonymous

So are 85% of these entertainers but we don't look to them as role models so I suggest you don't either.

  • DKAKS

everyone is reading j. cole's tweet wrong... he wrote the projections are fucking up hip hop meaning that he's fucking up the expected norm because of how close he is and he's making an impact on hip hop. he never expected to outsell kanye, but by being so close he's fucking up everyone else's expectations

  • Anonymous

yeezus is some 10 track bullshit

    • Jay

I heard some of the songs on there I didn't even want to to buy the album not Kanye West's work if I had to rate it i would give it 3/10

    • Andre Allen

Honestly, I felt the exact the same way but i gave it another listen and it grew on me and now I think its a classic. Just give it another listen.

  • Big Dan

I know J Cole talking about going up against Kanye was a silly, crazy attempt to get more publicity for his album, but damn, dude might actually have been secretly hoping he pulled a rabbit out the hat and that was not so crazy in retrospect. 260-270 is very strong and KW looks to be only beating him about 90k units. If they had actually gone the extra mile of promoting the album plus trying to cross him over, he could have actually beat KW. That said, he had to come out with yet another dumb rapper comment. How are first week projections messing up hip hop? What's being messed up is the young black youth as Tupac would say, with all you rappers cussing on Twitter and on your albums like its no thing, promoting drug use and all that other nonsense. To Albert the Great, you must be just sorting mail at BB if you do in fact work there. BB does not create the projections. They go on actual Soundscan sales for the first couple days or however they do it and then project seven days out. I have not heard any singles on the radio yet from Yeezus. This album might barely go platinum. Usually, dude has like four singles per album. He needs to study his trends. His last album did not yield much in the way of singles either. Power fell off real quick and was not followed by any other songs.

  • Albert The Great

All these projections are lies I work at billboard and the sales projections are 1. Mac Miller - 500k 2. J Cole - 300 k 3. This article is extremely inaccurate....reports say cole did 270K to 310K not 150K.....get your numbers straight before undermining the body of work that Born Sinner was and disrespecting it. I think Cole is closer to Kanye then this as some say he is within 20K. http://smokingsection.uproxx.com/TSS/2013/06/yeezus-and-born-sinner-first-week-sales

Cole is mad cause deep down he was sure to sell more than KAnye. Keep on grindin Cole, you'll need some more years to have a chance at achieving that and a dope ass album which you don't have yet.
