DJ Premier Divulges Nas "Illmatic" & Comedic Big L Stories

On what would have been Big L's 39th birthday, DJ Premier reveals his funniest moment involving the Harlem rapper.

DJ Premier quite literally dropped knowledge during his recent interview with Only Hip Hop Facts as he let loose a few Hip Hop facts of his own. The noted producer shared personal stories and facts about Nas, Jay-Z, Large Professor, and even the late Big L who would have celebrated his 39th birthday today.

According to Premier, Big L’s humor was very similar to that of another late rapper. The producer went on to detail one of his funniest encounters with Big L before comparing the rapper’s laidback humor to that of Biggie’s.

“I watched him and Showbiz argue over their knowledge of Malcolm X while we were waiting for Fat Joe to come to the studio to record ‘The Enemy.’ And it was the funniest argument I’ve ever seen,” DJ Premier revealed. “Cause Big L he talks like he raps…Big L was funny just like Biggie. Super funny and not even trying to be funny, like a comedian. He’s just naturally funny.”

DJ Premier later compared the past musical partnership between Nas and Large Professor to that of his relationship with Guru, and also credited the pair as being a “dope team” before touching on the knowledge he gained from Large Professor.

“I watched Large Profess make ‘It Ain’t Hard To Tell,’ ‘One Time 4 Your Mind,’ and ‘It Ain’t Hard To Tell (Remix)’, all in one day,” said the beatsmith. “I sat there and watched him do it on the SP-1200...This was before I even did a beat for Nas. And I was like ‘yo’—that’s how I do beats now because of the way Large Professor did it. He would just walk in and make it right there on the spot. That’s how I do. I don’t have like a whole CD of beats picked from. I walk in, do it, and say ‘here.’”

Preme is the G.O.A.T period...plain and simple...the most revered and imitated producer in the genre's history. And he gets points for the fact that he never got confused and sold out to the new, dick sucking, pop garbage that Hip-Hop devolved into.

  • Anonymous

You know Premo it would be really funny if you would stop producing because you are stuck in the 90's. Although you made many classic beats there comes a time you got to reite.

    • Anonymous

those smooth beats you clowns like from Ross are 90s music

    • @ the test tube baby

It's not a 90's sound dumbass it's HIS signature sound and it's actually timeless, most of the newer producers sound alike except for a handfull and they aren't mainstream.

    • blaklex

Your comment solidify's the reasons why hip hop has difficulties. Why should a hip hop artist have to retire? If they still have talent to offer, then they should continue to give the people what they want.

    • FUCK THIS CLOWN ABOVE ME

WHY NIGGA?WHATS WRONG WITH 90S BEATS?YOU LIKE NOWADAYS GAY MUSIC?YOU LIKE DIRTY SHIT SOUTH INSTRUMENTALS LIL WAYNE RAPS OVER?FUCK YOU!90S WAS THE GOLDEN ERA OF HIP HOP...NEVER FORGET THAT B!TCH

I NEVER comment on the internet but the comments on this thread are shocking. DJ Premier and Big L showed more talent on their tracks than all these bling, trying to sound gangster and cool, talking about bitches and money pop ass rappers around today. The music used to be an art form now its a popularity contest with all you hipster ass kids (some try to be gangster hipsters). I get it if you want to be cool and listen to the same shit all your costumed friends listen to but at least have respect for the forefathers of the genre of music that is now commercial junk. that is like saying i love billy talent but fuck led zepplin and the beatles. big l's content may have been just as thugged out and violent as anyone but he presented it in a clever way with impeccable flow. rap today may be fun but its a joke. and premo with the samples and the jazz pshhh one of the most important hip hop producers ever. get a grip, you tools grew up on the internet, use it to educate yourselves.

I care, Big L was dope and he got taken too soon. Every fucking article on this site is filled with haters, i wish all you weak motherfuckers would just drop dead already

  • dentaldamboy

No one cares about these stories. He sounds like a granpa remembering the good old days. Maybe if he started making music that sounded like Noah 40 or Mike Will, girls would be willing to get with him again. YCMCB, we got the rap game by the clit and the best producers working with us. We are so good that producers take a pay cut to work with our artists.

    • whyrwetalkingycmcbthisisarappage

who is this pop label ycmcb, oh right those 2 guys who kiss all the time but try to say they are gangster, didnt their best producer leave manny fres? and people dont take a pay cut to work with their artists they get jerked around for publishing or dont get paid at all. ycmcb the fakest label around, hell do they even make hip hop anymore or just that pop music shit?preem has more hip hop in his baby finger than ycmcb whole roster

  • Nas number 1 fan

Nas went hard as f*ck on Illmatic, but the production left something to be desired. I personally liked It Was Written... better.

    • BigWo0orm45

I agree with It Was Written being better. Fell in love with it, the story telling and beats were dope as hell. Still, Illmatic was nasty. I like the beat selection just because it made you pay more attention to the lyrics. Gave it a gritty, hungry underground feel.

    • Anonymous

the production was lacking on ILLMATIC! I always said that.
