Macklemore & Ryan Lewis Discuss Authenticity In Hip Hop While Defending "Thrift Shop"

Macklemore refers to Hip Hop as being an "ego-driven, testosterone-filled, machismo melting pot of culture" while discussing the "cycle" of the genre.

Seattle duo Macklemore & Ryan Lewis have received quite a number of critiques thanks to their genre-crossing The Heist single “Thrift Shop,” and during a recent interview with XXLMag.com the pair had the opportunity to address their critics directly.

While commenting on an article penned by New York Times writer Jon Caramanica titled “A Hip-Hop Moment, But Is It Authentic: Macklemore’s ‘Thrift Shop’ and Baauer’s ‘Harlem Shake’,” Macklemore defended “Thrift Shop” and revealed that the song is merely a “great record” that just so happened to make the crossover into pop.

“I think that the dude who wrote that probably hasn’t listened to the whole album. When a song like ‘Thrift Shop’ becomes a part of popular culture and soccer moms are bumping it and 5-year-olds are singing, ‘This is fucking awesome,’ it’s really easy to go in with a scalpel and dissect it and scrutinize the shit out of it,” Macklemore explained. “If it was somebody else who made the song, I’d probably do the same thing, particularly if it was two white dudes. But I still think ‘Thrift Shop’ is a really great record. I think that the beat’s slapping, I think that I’m rapping my ass off, and I think that it has a really catchy chorus, and those things came together and made a record that crossed over to pop.”

Ryan Lewis also tackled the topic of authenticity in Hip Hop during the interview as he referenced Kanye West and the Chicago rapper’s ability to constantly reinvent his music.

“Or on the flip side of that is looking to make what is current,” said Lewis. “That’s why I think somebody like Kanye is absolutely phenomenal, because he continues to come out with something that nobody else has and he redefines what the standard is to an acceptable hip-hop beat or an acceptable cadence or subject matter. It’s the reason why he is a trailblazer in the genre.”

“When you see people who have longevity in this industry, it’s people who reinvented themselves. Jay-Z, although Reasonable Doubt is one of the greatest hip-hop albums of all time, Jay-Z hasn’t made 15 Reasonable Doubts. Some people wish that he would, but people evolve, artists evolve, and music evolves,” Macklemore added.

Released in August 2012, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis’ “Thrift Shop” music video has gone on to receive a little over 300 million views on YouTube and the single alone played a vital role in sales of The Heist.

No disrespect but black folks dont know SHT called LOGIC. Listen, if NO ONE (including you) wanna FESS UP and TELL then how the fck are the police supposed to know anything and how the f*ck are you or anybody else gonna cry about justice? Nggas talk all that snitch stuff when its another statistic but when its their family member or their man they wanna cry justice. Look, nggas in LA KNOW Orlando anderson killed 2pac but no one wanna fess up cuz theyll get labelled a snitch. Instead they rather go at Funk Flex or Suge Knight and use them as scape goats and act tough with them on the Internet or via records. How is the police gonna lock any of these criminals up if nobody is fessin up? And then when the feds DO lock n*ggas up y'all cry the police is lockin' brothas/rappers up. I feel sorry for african americans, y'all have the most fukd up mentality out in the world, but yet still think its worse overseas LMAO. I live in both places btw and yes im black!

Hey If Macklemore wants to make pop music that's cool but don't get upset when HipHop fans call it what it is, pop music.

  • Anonymous

"it just happened to be fun and transpire into the pop world. If you listen to the rest of Macklemore's album you'll see it's real music" What exactly is REAL music? That's cool you like it. The problem I have is you shit on almost everything else there is, yet act like Macklemore reinvented the wheel. He's not a great lyricist which would be fine if the songs were good. To me, they aren't. They sound cheap. At least Tech Nine on occassion comes with something hard edged. I can respect that. Shit like Thrift Shop just sounds like a gimmick.

    • mike t

really?@anonymous, everything about that song is a gimmick. The hook, the beat, the stupid ass video, everything. Don't try and convince me otherwise. Douches like you love this kind of crap but have never listened to records like people's instinctive travels or criminal minded. I can't listen to Hip-Hop past 1999, its awful and gimmick shit like this thrift shop is the reason why.

    • Anonymous

More asshole opinions from Quote-Man. How does Thrift Shop, a song about choosing cheaper clothes over designer brand clothing, sound like a gimmick? Mack's not the best, but he's dope and is much better than half the rappers out now.

  • Killer Mike Lauren Hill Scarface

2 things wrong 1) they are white 2) they are pop 3) fuck you dx staff you better not report my shit

  • Reas

From looking at these comments, the same was said about Eminem and other guys came out with a "pop friendly" sound. Macklemore is dope and he doesn't talk about the same things everyone else is talking about. To some of yall's standards a lot of people wouldn't be Hip Hop in your opinion and that's BS.

"Slim Shady" was all over the radio. "hard knock Life" was all over the radio

    • shabbyblock

You're an idiot. Thrift Shop is a real song, it just happened to be fun and transpire into the pop world. If you listen to the rest of Macklemore's album you'll see it's real music and not mainstream topics.

Macklemore and Kendrick are my favorite rappers, but Macklemore has been my favorite since I heard gift shop on the radio. They are real rappers and I'm glad they are selling the most. And I'm not racist, I think Macklemore and his partner Ray Lewis make a nice gay couple, hip-hop needs equality. What they do is their business. Macklemore knew he was gay since 3rd grade, so he's been through a lot more than you guys hating.

    • Jim Jones

Hahah, most misinformed comment on the board, unless your trying to be on purpose. The song is called Thrift Shop, not gift shop. Macklemore never said he is gay on 'Same Love', listen to it again.

People hate on rap artists for no reason, if they aint speaking about bagging up, and banging guns then for some reason people don't consider it rap. Macklemore is talented, he can keep to a subject, for a full track unlike a lot of rappers these days. He isn't as great as a lot of other rappers I listen to. But if I fancy something different I'll play him, he's a refreshing sound to hip hop.

  • Anonymous Honesty

Wow... "Kanye and Jay Z reinvent themselves." "I'm rapping my ass off" is just a telling and sad statement. That proves his complete lack of talent. Thank you Warner Bros for buying radio play for us. That's what the article should be based around. Macklemore is as much of a disappointment as the last 20 years of music in Seattle has been. All garbage. I'm moving to the middle of a cornfield in Nebraska to get some authentic silence.

    • rideonemjixxer

@anonymoushonesty - Are you from Seattle? Do you have any clue about hiphop from Seattle? no?..then why are you running your mouth about something you know nothing about? macklemore is bitch made - FACT @Nice try Race is a tool of communication. Therefore, if Logic appears white then he becomes white - he can pass for white. MORE IMPORTANTLY, he assumes White privilege over his fellow people of color. Heritage is not the same as race OR ethnicity. Example: some people of Latin decent appear white despite their ancestral heritage. They are perceived as white and so they become white. Same can be said for some who are bi-racial, of ethnic Jewish descent, etc. ya dig?

"ego-driven, testosterone-filled machismo" Interesting, just like Macklemore's music... ^ you knew Quote-Man would be displaying his bitchassness here Like last week on the weekly numbers, telling us all that Macklemore was a drunk. Well, Macklemore took care of his problem and got himself together. Look at where he is now. Quote-Man will lie and spin more than Jodi Arias, contradict self and all, just to be right when the facts prove he is wrong. That is a mental disorder. Will Quote-Man get help for his problem and get help for himself? Nope, he'll keep coming back, trying to tell us how his opinion matters more than facts and evidence, while calling those names who are showing him he's wrong and needs help. Just like a drunk who doesn't want to hear the truth would do.

    • The Man

This is the man. I've been waiting for you. Tell me which station boy. Infinity waits for nothing. Time is nothing. We are everything. I look forward to your arrival.

    • - - - - - - -

As I bend onto my knees, palms shaking as they clutch the small fibers of the carpet, I look up. My reflection seems pitiful, mostly irrelevant in the cold vacant stare of this man. This man. This man who kicked my door in, waving his mighty double barrel, 12-gauge shot gun, proclaiming the specificity of his weapons as he shouts threats at my family. My wife breaks down, screaming and he shows no hesitance when beating her out of thought. His resolve is atomic and he knows no relent. Where is God within my trepidation? No response he gave us and so we bend towards insanity. The yelling persists. My eyes swell as I recognize the finality of life. I am relieved and this man sees my sudden composure. Death becomes Life in this moment as our eyes meet. He shows absolutely no emotion - Raiders starter cap pushed tightly over his camouflage do-rag, shadily clothed and rugged, looming over my decrepit display. It was January 17th, 2009 and now it is May 21st, 2013. I sit daily at the station, awaiting the crooked bastard who sprayed the blood and meat of my family upon my sleeved and arms, eyes stained with hatred, pain, and abandon - I await the moment he steps off that train. His life is mine and together we will suffer in this hell.

Killing it how? the song isn't about balling and rocking iced out chains. It's not about robbing and killing. It's about not getting pimped by a corporation and spending all your dough on over priced clothes. Most of the songs on his album are the same way. So how exactly is sending a message that's honest 'killing hip hop'?

  • MASRATI

macklemore is getting hyped for nothing, so bad tracks on that stupid "heist" album. hopefully eminem saves hiphop with his next album. otherwise ill stop listening to hiphop completely

  • RileSum

I love how uneducated most of the people on this site are and how quickly they judge. Everyone just bases their opinions off this song and the fact that their white. if you took your time and did a little research you'd know that Macklemore has been around for a while, listen to "The Language of my World" and you'll see that is more along the lines of what people would "Real Hip-Hop", not to say The Heist wasnt but it did have a few poppy tracks on it, which is what they were probably going for to grab more attention to them. Most rappers debut albums are radio friendly and more poppy because they're trying to widen their audience or their label is trying to do so.

    • Anonymous

Plus he has been around for a while, contrary to the popular belief he is not another newcomer hip-popper. Just listen to his older stuff and you will see. Still, the biggest thing about him is the business side of his career. Dude took the independent route way before it went so damn popular, and thanks to his foresight now he's clearly a multi-millionaire. Keep in mind that he owns his publishing, he doesn't have a 360 deal with some major label and they doing everything in-house. One hit wonder? Maybe. But from what I see, he's handling his fortune really well so far, with responsible financial planning he's good for the rest of his life - regardless of the success of his future musical projects. One hit wonder? Maybe. Will be able to reproduce his buzz again? Unlikely. Already richer than 99% of the other rappers out there? Highly possible. At the end of the day, the guy has the kind of financial and creative freedom for the rest of his career (unless he's ruining this chance) what is basically every single artist's dream. Ain't that something?

The beat isn't slapping. Sounds low budget. Enjoy your fifteen minutes Macklemore, cause underdogs never last.

  • s

macklemore is not hiphop. they sound too radio friendly, thats why they are popular. the whole beat and production is made for radio, THATS WHY SO MANY PPL LIKE IT. it also gets played alot cause of that fact. but that doesnt mean anything, macklemore is just mediocre and nothing special.

  • Killahkels

Macklemore can rhyme but he is not hiphop. People criticize b.o.b for experimenting with pop but this guy doesnt make any music geared towards the urban community. His music is solely for emo white kids who dont really dont like hiphop. I apluad him for opening that lane but he is overhyped because of that same reason. Dude is in the same class as travie mccoy and mile shinoda they can ryhme but their music is gear towads suburbia rather than being truly diverse.

    • ^

The Heist is hip-hop undeniably; it's not just the same trap/swag bullshit you usually hear on the radio. What makes it not hip-hop? Huh? You ain't shit.

    • Killahkels

Prove it! You have no argument as to how the heist was hiphop. Just because he rapping? Gtfo. Accept that is wasnt true hiphop and he aint s*** and move on.

    • ^

Everything you say is bullshit lies.

    • Killahkels

We are idiots for having an opinion? Spoken like a true macklemore fanboy. I said he csn rhyme is music is only geared towardsa certain emo white kids in the burbs. While rappers like b.o.b drake ( sellout or not) j cole kendrick is meant to be universal. Honesty doesnt translate to creativity. Kanye can make the most matetialistic hedonist song of the decade and people will be more inspired by the creativity and composition rather than the message. Macklemore comes on to majority of the urban community as corny. True hiphop has made its way out of the hood but if you cant connect with the people who started this then you are doing to hiphop what elvis did to rock. Again how are you hiphop when ypu receive very little airplay on hiphop stations. He is no Em sure em was supported by white america but he also connected with real hiphop heads and the urban community. Wacklemore is the 2013 vanilla ice.

    • yeaaahh

Just because hip-hop started in the hood doesn't mean that it should always be geared there. Music is self expression - tell YOUR story. Both B.o.B and Mack are dope..

    • Anonymous

Both of you are fucking idiots. Macklemore and B.o.B. are hip-hop. They just don't make the typical gangster/trap music that motherfuckers in the hood are used to. BTW, fuck Drake's sellout ass, he's wack as shit.

    • Killahkels

If you think bob dont use hiphop beats you havent heard any of his mixtapes and you ignored alb cuts like bet i, outta my mind, play for keeps, fame, and arena and subject matter wise b.o.b is light years ahead of him. Put me on > wings.

    • dentaldamboy

BoB can rap, but in the past he has done so over POP beats, not hip-hip beats. That's why BoB is pop garbage and will never be as successful as drake.

  • KidOnTheCouch

Just embrace the popularity however you get it. I liked the song personally it had a message and it was catchy. I don't see how you can curse someone for making something everyone enjoys. That shit seems backwards to me. How dare you make something more than one group of people can enjoy. Critics and free expression don't mix. Fuck critics.

  • Truthspeak

These guys are RUINING the authenticity in hip-hop. When you have to defend your single by claiming it was just a "great record" that had made a crossover to pop shows that it was no accident. That track was never hip-hop so there is no pop crossover, that shit was pop from the get-go. I personally think Macklemore can rap a bit but he's a lame - always been and always will be. NOBODY outside the white populace takes Macklemore seriously. Plus he jacks a lot of his slow-flow cadence from Slug of Atmosphere. To sum it up, Macklemore is not hip-hop, never will be hip-hop and should stick to his white frat-boy crowd and loser backpackers cause that's all he caters his sound to. We don't bump his faggot music in the streets. On a side note, Ryan Lewis is a great producer - he should work with talented rappers instead of these wannabe flavour of the month fuckboy rappers.

    • Fuck Outta Here

I don't think you realize what the word 'authentic' means. To do something authentic, you do it in the 'traditional or original way'. So the question is, what is 'authentic hip hop'? In the late 70's / early 80's it was about moving the crowd, about rocking the party. So wouldn't his little party anthem be considered 'authentic' in the traditional sense? By the mid / late 80's it became about sending a message. Wouldn't telling people that spending mass amounts of money on clothing is a way of being pimped by corporations sending a message? By the 90's hip hop was more lyric driven. Who has the dopest lyrics. Like it or not, dude can rhyme, and his subject matter is far beyond what is popular with most cats (I'm rich, I'm a gangster, I fuck bitches, I drive expensive cars, I rock the most ice, etc. etc. etc.). So again, perhaps you don't fully understand the definition of 'authentic' and how it relates to hip hop. Or, could it be you just don't like dude, and wanted to go online to hate on him..... yeah, it's probably that.

he dont like macklemore bec he doesnt have a name like rick ross, 50 cent, scarface, freeway, ect ect ect ect ect or any other rapper who bit their names off real gangsters.. macklemore should change his name to fat tony- rap about killin everyone and sellin pounds of coke and black ppl would like him

It doesnt even get much play on most hiphop stations yet it is hiphop? The pop community embraced this song

    • Killahkels

White people real? Real good at trying to capitilize on a market. The industry while sign any white rapper who raps from riff raff to action bronson. However they wont sign many "authentic black rappers" just like scarface was trying to say.

    • hes mad because..

hiphop was the only thingblack ppl had to make themselves look cool and rebel like..now white ppl are rapper better and with more passion and real shit not makin up fake gangster names pretending your some kingpin.. white men run hiphop now- were just realer and more authentic

Prejudice and discrimination are unacceptable and our grandparents and ancestors didn't suffered and fight so people like you could take us back 100 years. If youre a minority you should really be ashamed. Go watch roots or something or at least read Up From Slavery or something!

make you a deal. we will stop letting crackers rap when you stop letting coons from down south rap

I read the article. I dislike the fact that Macklemore thinks that, if we dislike him, we must have only heard Thrift Shop. I dislike Thrift Shop, but I also dislike his more "serious" songs. In fact, I find he writes even more purple prose on his serious songs, and they end up reading like a Hallmark Card or like a B minus essay written by a grade nine English student.

not what he said. Said the dude probably didnt listen to the whole album to get a full, comprehensive view of the entire project to make an accurate assessment. read nigga.
