Scarface Says New York Rappers Are "Following The Trend"

The Houston rapper also says you wouldn't know where you were if you listened to New York radio with your eyes closed.

Scarface has seen a dramatic change. Though he said that New Yorkers are still trendsetters, the Texas Rap icon said that New Yorkers are now "following the trend[s]" in Rap.

This stands are a marked difference from when Scarface and his group The Geto Boys were attending New York music industry events in the early 1990s as they were trying to break into and garner respect in the then-genre-leading Big Apple Rap market. "From back then when I started, from going to the New Music Seminar and getting booed, to coming out here fuckin' in front of everybody's line when I walk up. 'Face.' I would have never thought that," Scarface told The Combat Jack Show. "To be shut out by the backpackers. 'We don't want to hear that shit up here,' to hearing 2 Chainz on the radio out here, I'm like, 'Whoa.'"

In the last decade-plus, the New York Rap market has become much more accepting of Rap from other regions than it was in the 1980s and 1990s, in part because New York rappers started regularly collaborating with rappers and producers from other regions in the late 1990s. Noreaga used the then-emerging Virginia beat team The Neptunes to produce his 1998 hit "Superthug." The Queens rapper also appeared on the song "Fire Water" from Mississippi Rap duo Crooked Lettaz Grey Skies album a year later. David Banner was one-half of Crooked Lettaz. Jay-Z also worked extensively with The Neptunes and fellow Virginia beatsmith Timbaland starting in the late 1990s, paving the way for NY rappers who are more regionally neutral, such as Nicki Minaj and A$AP Rocky

Scarface, who along with Ice Cube and fellow Geto Boys member Bushwick Bill became one of the first non-New York artists to work with a New York act when he appeared on Kool G. Rap & D.J. Polo's "Two To The Head" in 1992, also discussed how shocked he was that rappers from other regions now dominate New York radio. "If you get in the car, close the door, turn the radio on and close your eyes," he said to Combat Jack and DP, "you'd think you're somewhere else."

Someone in the comments below mentioned that New York was jocking the south because New New York rappers started wearing grills? Are you kidding me?? Do you not remember when Wu in the 90's was rocking Gold grills? As a matter of fact, there's a picture of Jay-Z circulating around the internet wearing gold fronts in the late 80's. All you gotta do is type it in on Google and it pops up. The root of hip-hop is NYC don't forget that. I'm not gonna lie,out here in Los Angeles, that south bounce goes in at the night clubs but that don't mean you're shit is better then New York or LA; that's like someone having 50 likes on Facebook, but offline they don't have any friends. See what I'm saying? I'm not saying all the rappers from the south suck because there's a few that go HOOORRRRDDD. I like Outkast, I like Ludacris, kind of a fan of T.I.,and a few others but Trinidad James? Two Chains? (original name Titty boy) Gucci mane? that little particular group that all sound the same, give hip-hop a bad name. It's like black face for hip-hop, a gimmick, an act. It's not Hip-hop. As a matter of fact, come to my blog and check out some of my TBT's and you'll find some lyrical shit. Sure NYC is not on the club scene or radio scene anymore but don't think for one moment they don't have mad lyricist in that city. Ya'll can have the "shimmey for the whiteman act" LA and NY, we'll be here re-creating hip-hop in poetic lounges and dive bars with the hipsters. ha! lol Check out my tbts, and please click on those green links. =) http://deanmartin21.blogspot.com/

Biggie was dumb. He was not that smart of a businessman. And before people start throwing flames at me, READ READ READ.... BIGGIE IS THE BEST EMCEE. UNDISPUTED. BUT BIGGIE WAS NOT WISE TO WHO AND WHAT PUFF IS.... Look at what's happening.... Biggie is being used as a jewel in Puff's crown. His ghost is and has been pimped to give Puff a little love in the street (which Puff desperately needs). I think Biggie would probably be beefin' with Puff just like every other artist Puff has had. Why? Biggie was an emcee. He was not an astute businessman. Although he wrote "The Ten Crack Commandments" he was basically dumb to all of Puff's wheelings and dealings. But in time (if he had lived) I think he would have caught on and been thoroughly against Puff. To see his ghost being pimped like this is a shame. Biggie went out on the "Love" end of his relationship with Puff. I won't get into conspiracy theories and blame Puff for his death.... But Damn! It's absolutely amazing how Puff is benefiting from Biggie's demise. I think he is probably benefiting more than Biggie's mom!!! And to ALLOW yourself to even be put into a position with Rick Ross to be even SLIGHTLY compared to Biggie is disrespectful to Biggie's ghost. If you were truly Biggie's friend and not trying to create the next Biggie, you would have never allowed those rumors to come up. This isn't the first issue about Puff and Big's ghost. Anybody ever heard of a cat called JAY ELECTRONICA? JAY ELECTRONICA is blatantly going around calling himself "The Ghost of Christopher Wallace". And now he is hanging extra tight with Puff. And Puff has yet to silence him or correct him. Now I know what cats will say. They will say, "Jay Electronica is only saying that as a sign of respect to real emceeing." That's a bullshit argument. THERE IS NO WAY IN HELL I would allow someone to disrespect my man by even saying some dumb shit like that if I truly loved and respected Biggie. NO WAY! Biggie was dumb. Not in the sense of stupidity. He was dumb to the devil that is PUFF. And his ghost is not getting respected. Real talk.

NOT ONLY WACK ASS NEW YORK RAPPERS FULL OF SNOBBISM TRY TO MAKE A PENNY OFF THE SOUND THEY HATED YEARS AGO. ALSO IN CHI-TOWN, THERE IS THIS CHIEF KEEF DUMBASS. NEW YORK IS DEAD, HIP-HOP LIVES IN THE SOUTH, ATLANTA IS THE CAPITAL OF HIP-HOP. G-UNIT IS DEAD (THE BEST TWO RAPPERS FROM G-UNIT WERE NOT EVEN FROM NY), 50 CENT CAN'T EVEN RELEASE AN ALBUM BECAUSE HE KNOW HE WILL FLOP, WU-TANG CLAN HAS RESPECT BUT ODB IS DEAD AND LAST GHOSTFACE ALBUM SOLD TRIPLE WOOD, JOEL ORTIZ IS A NOOB. MOST OF NEW YORK RAPPERS WERE WACK OR OVERRATED BACK IN 80S AND 90S. NOW THEY REALIZED THEY'RE WACK/BROKE AND THEY TRY TO COPY SOUTHERN SOUND, EVERY NIGGA WANTS TO DO FEATURINGS WITH 2 CHAINZ, LIL WAYNE, YOUNG JEEZY, FUTURE, GUCCI MANE, DJ KHALED, T-PAIN OR OTHERS. ONLY FABOLOUS, JADAKISS, DIDDY, NAS, FRENCH MONTANA, JIGGA, ASAP ROCKY AND COUPLE OF OTHERS DO IT GOOD AND STAY RELEVANT.

    • Antwizzle

@Yebo Fuck you you southern trash. The shitty south is the reason rap is where it is today. Outkast, Geto Boyz and Master P are the true south. Gucci, 2 Chainz and Future is trash. The South is full of shitty wack rappers who lack content. Lemme see a rapper from the south make a good rap album. Only one is J.Cole. New York started this, the west took to the next level, then the South ruined it. So fuck you and the southern rap trap/trash music. Go listen to some Big L you DICKHEAD. Better yet some Joey Bada$$, and come back and tell me what hip hop it. Fucking Commercial Dickhead.

Some people say Scarface is a bitter man and I agree but remember this one thing, he has every right to be bitter. Hip Hop/Rap Music has been so watered down the last 10 plus years and New York has followed the same path of making weak ass commerical music. New York was always the trendsetters now they are just the follwers of a wack movement. Scarface is a fucking legend, respect the man!

He's right. I'm from Florida but drew inspiration from Wu, Nas, Mobb, Talib, and Mos when I used to rhyme. We used to do shows here in FL and the crowds looked at us like we were from another planet. The applause would be tepid at best. Then some dready headed dudes would come on stage and hop around screaming into the mic and the crowds would go crazy. I can specifically remembering the MC of one show asking the crowd how they can cheer from the music no one can understand but not react the the lyrical stuff. That was roughly 10 years ago and not much has changed here. The south likes rowdy music and the classic New York hip-hop sound isn't rowdy. New York now has turned on to rappers like 2Chainz and Gucci Maine and NY has essentially become the followers in a movement they themselves created. Scarface is a legend and he's only being kind when he calls NY "still the trendsetters". The only New York rapper left with any pull is Jay (This coming from a Nas fan). Wu, Nas, & Talib still get my cash but Mobb has fallen off farther than Wile E. Coyote off a cliff. It's kind of sad to see NY acquiesce to radio rap but I think it's mostly due to payola more than anything and people will listen to whatever the radio is playing.

  • NYC rappers are pussies nowadays

Scarface is right NYC rappers follow trends! NYC rap is dead they scared to make NYC rap they sounds nowadays like dirty south rappers. Also they rapeat themselfs with each album they make. Always the same bullshit: i have guns, i sell coke etc. really sad.

Gucci is the realest rapper and heres why. 1) all other rappers rap about being gangster shooting and killing but they havent done it. 2) Eminem raps about killing he hasnt. 3)Jay z raps in Open letter about sending shots he hasnt. 4)Nas raps about how he is a queens thug but he wasn't. 5)Most of the rappers rap about stuff they havent done yet you all support them and say its real rap. 6)When rick ross does it you all claim he is fake and say its fake rap. This shows that hiphop fans are hypocritical and all these real hiphop fan wanna be's are just some unjustified haters whose opinions are just as irrelevent as the swag fag rapper fans. BIG GUWOP KILLED A MAN HE WAS A DRUG DEALER BEFORE RAPPER HE HAS STREET CREDENTIALS HE IS THE ONLY RAPPER THAT RAPS ABOUT FACTS THERE FORE BIG GUWOP IS THE REALEST RAPPER IN THE RAP GAME AND THATS A FACT!

remember when benzino said eminem was like elvis and was gonna ruin rap music. I laughed my ass off at the time and thought benzino was a jackass. But ten years later I can see he actually may have been right. If you think about it - there hasnt been a jada, nas, jay-z, wu-tang, etc. since 50 cent blew up. Something to do with they way 50 was, combined with eminems backing made it so not one good rapper has debuted out of nyc with the same skill levels as jay, nas, biggie, wu-tang, jada, az, boot camp, camron, pun, mobb deep, cnn, since 50 blew up. As of now you could say that 50 and eminem ruined rap. He may have really been elvis.

    • Anonymous

New New York rappers now are more of flow/cadence rappers now than lyrical. But there are plenty of rappers that match that skill level of that list. Maybe not relatively from that time period to this one, but rap has evolved so that skill level compared to today's is more common. But you can't just say that he ruined rap just because one city has produced a legend in a decade.

its nobodies fault. Times change. Read the article in the ny times the other day about how brooklyn looks now. They sell cupcakes and $10 cocktails where it used to be crack. So its only natural that the rap sounds all fake and shit now

  • Manny Faces

Respect due, but he's wrong. Someone said it in the comments. If you not from NY, you really can't understand the breadth and depth of the scene here. And to say that NY rappers are "following the trend" just shows that he really doesn't know about many NY rappers. Which is understandable. Not many people do. Because media and radio don't show love. It's a simple mistake that many make, even IN New York. But there are plenty on non-trend-following, good-hip-hop-making NY rap acts around. If you disagree, check in on Birthplace Magazine / The NY Hip Hop Report and we'll be happy to have this debate. Gets to be a bit tiring when uninformed folks (yes, even our icons and elders) are speaking about us/on our behalf.

  • Ramelo

He's right! Most of the New Yorker's under the age of 25 are lame as hell to be totally honest. They have an identity crisis. Go out to any party/club/event in the NYC/NJ/CT and most of the under 30 crowd is all over that U.O.E.N.O. shit. Trap records, Swag Records, etc,etc...It's crazy and sad to see, being that I grow up in Newark, NJ and feel like I can't identify with anybody under the age of 30 for the most part.

"Anybody that says NY rap is dead has never understood what NY rap was in the first place. If the radio is where you are going to hear the sound of NY, or BET is where your going, then you are lost. I wouldn't expect anyone outside of NY to understand that but NY rap is alive and thriving." ^ yes sir (no comment troll) the perpetuated lie is that music is for everyone and there's plenty of it out there (if you look for it), but there's a concentrated effort to push only certain types of music. And that mainstream, media driven music is what they listen to and check for.

More z100 music out there than local rappers getting a chance on radio. After Sac-Town, Portland has no local push, Seatlle has it's heroes, the south and east come do shows up and down the Pacific, local rappers have to fend for themselves, no labels or outlets to push their music. Most residents play their old, favorite music from E-40, Short, Corleone, Quik, Mac Dre, Nas, Jay, 50, ATCQ, etc. Locksmith just did a song with east recruits. You still want to have this conversation?

  • DentalDamboy

You YMCMB haters are fucking idiots. Because I'm an accountant for Cash Money Records, I spend a lot of time with Birdman. He told me that in 96, Biggie was looking to get out of his contract with Bad Boy so he could sign with Cash Money. If Cash Money is right for Biggie, then it's clearly the top record label. Unfortunately, Jay-Z and Diddy found out about Biggie's upcoming departure and had him shot. Also, Birdman as always a role model for Pac. Most of you don't know this, but the song Hit Em Up was originally supposed to be Split Em Up, a song where Pac brags about fucking Faith, leading to her breakup with BIG. But Birdman explained to Pac that real gangsta's talking about killing people, so that's how Hit Em Up took on such a violent tone. YMCMB for life. We got the game by the clit!

More verification that he was right with his first statement. The powers that be have turned the industry from creative control to suggestive marketing. "Grief Pedigree"-Ka A strong, Hip Hop, introspective of a brother from B'klyn that received minimal play, even though certain rappers cosigned the man's music. The industry suits wanted Trinidad James, put him in radio rotation, exposure on MTV, etc. The young brothers wanting a shot at rap stardom will emulate what Trinidad is doing just to get in (follow the trend). many of the Caucasian audience can't relate to what Ka is saying because that life is NOT what you live, but a Trinidad song is cool with you as you try to dance and joke on his looks.

wow, I'm so Ny ...but i got gossip about the southern listen on radio from favor of hip hop on rick ross , french Montana , 2 chain , lil wayne that's all when new york radio station have same thing of hip hop favor named.

  • zerocool6687

Not that I am disagreeing with him at all, the NY sound no longer exists at least mainstream for the most part and it's kinda sad that the regional differences that added so much to hip hop when I was a teen are for all intents and purposes gone... or at least disappearing. That being said he seems to be hitting the bitter old man stage of his life early. He just seems pissed off in general.

Funny how I live in Louisiana and all I hear is Wiz, Jay, Kanye and 50 Cent on my radio.

  • Harlem's Reckoning

Anybody that says NY rap is dead has never understood what NY rap was in the first place. If the radio is where you are going to hear the sound of NY, or BET is where your going, then you are lost. I wouldn't expect anyone outside of NY to understand that but NY rap is alive and thriving. Now don't get me wrong, Lil Wayne, Trinidad James, Khalifa, Chief Keef, Gucci Mane, etc. is everything NY aspires to be (GTFOH). Scarface is right about the radio shit, but regional sounds are becoming less and less regional as time goes on. The music is out there. You just have to stop going to the radio to find it.

  • kevikev

He telling the truth about that shit. He ain't never lied. Hip-hop is so fucking wack and homo, it ain't even funny. That's why I don't listen to the radio no more. It ain't what it used to be. You hear the same artists all day, everyday. All you hear is 2 Chainz, Chris Brown, (and) Drake. That's why I'm never leaving old school (hip hop). Old school (hip hop) was original. You knew who was who, and nobody bit anyone's style. Anybody who listens to this bullshit out today, you've got serious problems, and have no clue about real hip hop.

So fuckin true. It makes me sick to my stomach being born and raised in NY and because the majority of ny rappers are on the souths fuckin dick, the originality is gone. Can't tell the difference anymore. Thank God for Ghost, Sean Price, Cormega and a few others who continue to follow the old format and make it work.

  • Atlanta Ruined Rap

Most of all rap sounds the same, same beats, same formula, and same subject matter. It's sad, but this is the music yall like.

NY rap is dead, Joey Badass we need ya

  • Anonymous

it ain't just new york before you could listen to a song and tell where the artists was from now 80% of it all sounds the same i blame these new young kids making beats on fl studio those south beats are so easy to make and are cheap to buy. people cant afford to pay big name producers anymore. you could buy 1 beat from just blaze timberland etc or buy 5 from lex chop mike etc
