Lauryn Hill has paid her $900,000 tax bill, her attorney said. But the award-winning emcee/singer isn’t necessarily off the hook with the federal government.

Hill, who owed nearly $1 million in back taxes and penalties, still faces three charges of failing to file tax returns. She is due in U.S. District Court in Newark, New Jersey today to face the charges. Hill is accused of not filing tax returns on more than $1.8 million of income earned between 2005 and 2007.

Her attorney said that Hill’s punishment—she faces up to a year in jail on each charge—may be adjusted given her repayment of the bill, according to Reuters.

Hill owed more than $500,000 in back taxes. Penalties brought the total bill to more than $900,000. Hill released the single “Neurotic Society” on iTunes Friday. She did not seem pleased with being “required” to release the tune: “Here is a link to a piece that I was ‘required’ to release immediately, by virtue of the impending legal deadline,” Hill wrote on her Tumblr site Saturday. “I love being able to reach people directly, but in an ideal scenario, I would not have to rush the release of new music.”
