On Monday April 29 The Red Bull Music Academy is producing a one-night film festival entitled “Filmmatic: An Evening Of Rare Hip Hop Documentaries.” It will take place at the Sunshine Cinema in New York, New York at 6:30pm. The R.B.M.A. is a series of music workshops and festivals that has traveled the world since 1998, they have been ambassadors for Hip Hop culture for awhile now.
The films that will be showcased are Beat This by Dick Fontaine (1984), Big Fun In The Big Town by Bram van Splunteren (1986), Reckin’ Shop: Live From Brooklyn (1992) by Diane Martel / Panel: Afrika Bambaataa, Schoolly D, Buddha Stretch, Dick Fontaine, Diane Martel, Bram van Splunteren; hosted by Chairman Mao. All of these films chronicle the Hip Hop culture in some of its earliest stages. It was fitting that so many pioneers were included on the panel. After the screenings are finished there will be a conversation with all three directors and with some Hip Hop icons in attendance.
The host of “Filmmatic: An Evening Of Rare Hip Hop Documentaries,” Chairman Mao, is an ego trip co-founder and longtime XXL “Chairman’s Choice” columnist. He has authored two books and is also known for co-producing “The White Rapper Show” and “Miss Rap Supreme.”
