French Montana Admits Not "Trying To Get Lyrical"

French Montana says he isn't "saying shit to sound good."

Just in case fans were expecting lyricism on French Montana's upcoming release Excuse My French, the Bad Boy emcee has disappointing news.

"Obviously, I don't be trying to get lyrical," said French in an interview with Xclusives Zone. "It's not a secret. I just make music. I love the feeling."

French continued, explaining that he simply writes what he feels at the time, and believes that approach will make him more relatable. "I wake up feeling fucked up, I'll make a fucked up song. I will go through one thing that somebody else will go through and just be like, yo, my fans will grow to love me, 'He's going through what I'm going through.' I feel like that's how you get the core audience."

"That's why I feel like my shit is the best because it's my life," he added. "I'm not perpetrating, I'm not saying shit to sound good, I found a way to make my life and my music and people love it."

French Montana's Excuse My French drops on May 21, with features from Scarface, Birdman, Max B, Drake, Lil Wayne, Nicki Minaj, and Rick Ross.

"hip hop has always been about lyrics" No it hasn't.

"Entertain? You sound like a fan of bubble gum rap" You sound like a fan of old, dusty, dinosaur music with no beats.

  • Flip

He should jave stuck with making dvds this nigga sucks hands down. Why be in something to be second best? Pussy niggas scared of competition with each other cause they all suck from wayne on down. Lyrical, lmao if he was real he wouldve said I go in to slaughter niggas but you say some fag shit like that? smh

  • 2pac is the GOAT!

eminem TALKS ABOUT KILLING HIMSELF and RAPING WOMEN and killing chopping up woman AND KIDS and BEING A PEDOPHILE, EMINEM is trash just like BEIBER IS TRASH but the white population refuse's to let them go trying to make them more than what they are... All he does is goes to the studio makes songs and dissing people from his studio then cries about how people hate him because he is white...He is trash just like his label...And trust me im far from a "hater

  • Nick T

Seriously? What he said.. that's like Shaq saying he doesn't practice free-throws, because he knows he's not the best at shooting free-throws. "I mean.. you know.. everybody knows I'm kind of a terrible free throw shooter. So, you know, I don't really try and practice my shot. You know, I just play basketball the way I feel like playing. You know. I just wanna rebound, and cherry-pick shots. Nahmean? I'm just doin' me." Lol... *facepalm* Yeah, no shit, you and every other person who ever made a song, writes based on their mood. Smh. Lolol. What does that have to do with skills? Not being "Lyrical" has nothing to do, necessarily, with skills as a writer. Pac wasn't "lyrical" but he was a Poet. AND he made music people felt, and partied to, drank to, thought to, survived to. Your words having meaning is not the same as "trying to get lyrical." And, vice versa, being lyrical and using wordplay doesn't mean your words have No meaning or can't be related to either. In fact, it's the opposite. The songs people call "lyrical" are usually songs that people have been rocking to for 10, 20 years. Nobody will be listening to, "Freak" or "Pop That" in 2023 or 2033. People still know the words to "California Love" though. "CREAM." "All I Need." "Big Poppa." When people complain, it's not about "trying to get lyrical." It's about Classic Music versus Catchy Music. Fake Hits can be made by repeating a song over and over till people "like" it. But Having a catchy song and having a song that is Timeless and people will love it for generations is two different things. Artistically AND Financially. People like the Isley Brothers is getting paid off commercials using their songs, from 50 years ago LOL NORE said it best. Be a "Student of the Game." People been hustling off this music for too damn long. If you hustling, that means somebody's getting Hustled: The Listeners.

  • YESSIR

Gucci is the realest rapper and heres why. 1) all other rappers rap about being gangster shooting and killing but they havent done it. 2) Eminem raps about killing he hasnt. 3)Jay z raps in open letter about sending shots he hasnt. 4)Nas raps about how he is a queens thug but he wasn't. 5)Most of the rappers rap about stuff they havent done yet you all support them and say its real rap. 6)When rick ross does it you all claim he is fake and say its fake rap. This shows that hiphop fans are hypocritical and all these real hiphop fan wanna be's are just some unjustified haters whose opinions are just as irrelevent as the swag fag rapper fans. GUCCI KILLED A MAN HE WAS A DRUG DEALER BEFORE RAPPER HE HAS STREET CREDENTIALS HE IS THE ONLY RAPPER THAT RAPS ABOUT FACTS THERE FORE GUCCI IS THE REALEST RAPPER IN THE RAP GAME AND THATS A FACT!.

  • Kurama

"I don't be trying to get lyrical"? Forget lyrics, he needs to work on his grammar.

  • Anonymous

I find it interesting that 130 posters decided to even give this clown any attention. Why comment on something if you hate it? Just skip it and avoid the story. Being lyrical is not everything. If you listened to early hip hop none of it was lyrical it was all party music like freaks. Plus why is everyone giving Future, 2 chainz and Trindad James a pass with their wackness? Oh I get it, because they are from the south and when you are from the south it is okay to suck. But French being from NY (the ex-mecca of hip hop) he is held to a different standard, he must rap like Big L and Rakim, anything less is heresy. I guarentee you that pretty much all the people commenting here are a bunch of suburban white kids who think they got the rap game all figured out. If you hate French Montana then ignore him and stop giving him attention, even hating on something is giving that person or thing publicity.

  • Master P

I'll make this nigga say uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuugh, then he'll get lyrical 100% !!!

  • -

so many nerds on this site with lame opinions.

A rappers job: Flow on beats with good lyrics (whether its deep, technical, vivid storytelling, etc) French Montana's flow sucks and his lyrics are trash. What skills are involved?

  • OC

you didn't need to tell us frenchie, we already knew

  • Fish

    WORST FEATURES EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Bruce Williams

So basically, its ok to suck balls...cool

  • playboy pryor

French Montana doing his thang!! dont care for his music, but respect his grind. the people who's saying he's trash, are the ones who is sitting on their ass, dont hate him because he found his own lane. buy the music you like and chill.

    • Anonymous

      ^^ dumbass..

    • playboy pryor

You're a hater whose mad cause you broke!

    • 614grind

That's the default excuse when a rapper sucks at thier craft. "I respect his effort". Fuck that. As a fan of the music, I want good music, not a good work ethic. Put out some shit that took you some time to make, not that recycle bin bullshit every 3 weeks. Of course, the default argument to that is "you're a hater whose mad cause you broke". Standards are so low, no wonder there's a fuckin recession that won't end. We've devalued everything so the profit margins are shit.

  • mal617

this is a sorry ass excuse for sucking

  • Anonymous

"Your only job is to be LYRICAL, your a LYRICIST" His job is too entertain. If he was a good lyricist, that would merely be a bonus.

  • room2roam

ice cube, too short, snoop dog... none of these ctas are/were lyrical. the problem is these days no one is saying anything in their raps. its the same fuk bytches, get money, ill kill you bs. you dont have to be lyrical to make good hip hop, you just need to say something worth listening to...

  • TaZzZ

Best excuse I've ever heard for being a garbage emcee... Your only job is to be LYRICAL, your a LYRICIST. You don't make the beats, you don't market the shit.. What do you do? That's like Lebron saying he wasn't trying to be a good basketball player when the Heat lose a game... Dudes nowadays are ridiculous, why don't you just say "I aim to be average"?

  • SDK

THIS PUSSY CANT GET LIRYCAL STRAIGHT TRASH

  • nigga creep

If you honestly be feelin this arab's shit, nigga killyoself.

  • Psycho Maestro

"Obviously, I don't be trying to get lyrical," If you can't even fucking speak correctly you should just fuck off and die. Why does anybody give these no talent fucks any play at all? This fag should be working a dollar store counter or something. IF YOUR NOT TRYING TO BE LYRICAL THEN STOP RAPPING BECAUSE YOU HAVE NO TALENT!!

    • Anonymous

the irony........you "listen" to a genre of music that is full of slang and broken language but want to see and hear the most pristine usage of English.....foh nerd

  • NIGGGA

HE WILL NEVER MAKE A RECORD BETTER THAN "SHOT CALLER"

  • 614grind

French is just warning everybody that his shit is gonna be garbage.

  • Anonymous

This nigga gonna do chief keef numbers, 50 isn't lyrical but still had his run in the hip hop game and made a stupid amount of money from it

  • b

I hope this idiot sells one album so we can be done with this already.."im not trying to get lyrical"...so what r u doing... perpetrating as a rapper just to make shit ass music to listen to if you have 1 brain cell...no, thats called being a pop star. youre not the best at anything. youre just typical. youre the reason why music sucks on a consistent basis. im ashamed to be from the same city as you, you don't deserve to call yourself a rap artist from new york. go fuckin kill yourself and let someone who actually cares take your spot..cuz they will in due time anyway. fuck head.

  • Anonymous

at least he was honest about it and staying in his lane

    • apaniclassic

i was thinkin the same thing...when has he ever been lyrical? he is right its not a secret and his attitude is love it or hate it...look at his album he is sellin personality not his own skills. MAJORITY of the songs on that tracklist feature other ppl like all except 1 maybe 2, fa reals...if u dont wannna buy it...then dont buy it anyone who buys his album and claims they were expecting anything other than "entertainment" is a liar...mostly to themselves lol

  • soboss

theres something to be said for putting ur feelings in a song with no filter and making it sound good. yall think cuz this nigga aint rapping about gay marriage or some shit hes wack. i dont listen to frenchie when im goin thru a personal crisis, i listen to him when im crunk. that said, the nigga thought sandy hook was staged so fuck his troglodyte punk ass

  • Tee

Nice dude, but one of the worst artists ever

  • Chris Etrata

He basically said he was wack (because a good rapper gets lyrical) yet he called his album "the album of the decade."

  • Bobyahed2dis

I Own many albums from the likes of Krs one and French Montana, and i can honestly say that this one is gonna be one of the most unique albums in history, nobody is a better story teller than french montana when it comes to chillen in the club or smoking on that good weed, my prediction is will do no less than 824k first week.

  • Vins

HAHAHA SO HE IS BASICALLY SAYING HE IS NOT HIP-HOP, BECAUSE BEING LYRICAL OR BRINGING A MESSAGE TO THE PEOPLE IS THE WHOLE PURPOSE OF BEING A RAPPER/MC HAHAHA WHAT A FUCKING JOKE

  • yeaaahh

Hip-hop is pretty much the only genre that most of the artists don't make their own music. In other genres you can be an average writer but still get respect if you're a great musician. As far as rapping, if you're not trying to be lyrical nor make beats....THEN WHERE IS THE TALENT??? I'm a fan of lyricists but I can respect an average rapper who produces his own music because that shows that you have some form of talent. Like, SpaceGhostPurrp for example.

  • Anonymous

What's wrong with not being lyrical? I'm not a fan, but most popular hip hop artists aren't lyrical. Different strokes for different folks. There are all kinds of hip hop out there. You want lyrics? Go to Talib Kweli and move on.

  • Anonymous

Isn't rap about lyrics ????? Then, why do these idiots get record deals ????

  • Anonymous

"Obviously I don't be trying to get lyrical. It's not a secret." Translation: I'm a wack rapper. It's not a secret.

  • Anonymous

This nigga the Too Short of his era both MC's were wack as fuck when it came to lyrics

    • Anonymous

Too Short's a legend. In 2 years, Montana won't be mentioned at all.

    • gamestwin

whoa..whoa..whoa..being from oakland..u would get DRUGGED SHOT THEN BEAT TO DEATH saying some lame shit like that..once again another 90s baby..do your knowledge without short we wouldnt have ALOT of other rappers..fuck boi

  • ETK

ok, admit if you're not lyrical all you want but don't fuckin call your upcoming album "album of the decade". shit's been pushed back so much and features a passaway hit from months ago(Pop That) and let's not forget the HUHHHH HANNH HAHH HUNNHH

  • Chris Etrata

BTW, his admittance that he sucked with lyrical rap, contrasted his statement that Excuse my French was going to be the album of the decade.

  • Anonymous

"Obviously, I don't be trying to get lyrical" - well then fuck you and your album, ok?

  • So Icy Boi / Yung Icy Boi!

at least French Montana dissed da shot outta 5.0 Cent...

  • Chris Etrata

At least French was honest in that he sucks shit as a rapper.

  • Anonymous

i don't have any real skillz that's why i'm only a rapper, nothing amazingly insightful or articulate. That's why i appeal these major labels who will always back me and give me that extra push just to dumb down and dilute hip hop culture further more.

  • davis

this dude is an example of why hiphop is trash now. these dudes don't care and they are hiding behind beats without any lyrics.

    • Ringworm

hiding behind beats spot on and they don't even make the beats they are just the posterboys/figureheads while the beatmaker is doing his stuff behind the scenes

  • molly cyrus

shits gonna be garbabe, a french montana album is nothing more than a label compilation album. and u think about how many artists are gonna be on the album, they gotta get paid too for the features, plus all of the producers and shit man this album is gonna be a major flop. 1 and done.

  • p

"Obviously, I don't be trying to get lyrical" lol.... no shit

  • Anonymous

can someone tell me whats the point of wearing a beanie if you're gonna wear it above your ears like this guy??? i thought the whole point of those hats was to keep your head and your ears warm??? this fools looks ridiculous

  • Anonymous

basically, he dont rep Hip Hop but hip pop....

    • ....

Hip-Pop would be a compliment for French Montana's music, I would class Eminem's new music a "Hip-Pop" as it caters to more of a popular sound, songs like Love the Way You Lie & Not Afraid will still be played in 10 years Montana's music won't... He makes "Fad-Hop"

  • Jozi

why do you people publish such articles? HIPHOPDX- do u realise that theres "hiphop" in there and if this kous kous eating chump openly claims that he doesnt care about lyrics then its no more hiphop. pls stop updating us on Rihanna,JT,Beyonce and all of them. please respect us enough to give us only hip hop news. you dont read a jazz magazine and see news about Rolling Stones. its bad that radio killed the real hiphop and now ur wack ass publication is following suite.

    • Brandon

HipHopDX is a MEDIA site and, just like any other media outlet, they'll publish what gets attention. These are the artists getting attention atm.

    • ^^^^ (Jus10)

Thank god for this interview, I was really starting to confuse French with Public Enemy, but this sets the record straight. lol

  • Killem Dafoe

No shit, Sherlock! That's the usual excuse for most of today's rappers. Emceeing is an art that eludes the likes of yo bitch ass. Last time I bought anything Bad Boy was Life After Death. Fuck you, French, ya bitch!

    • Exactly

Music is a form of art, if a rapper isn't trying to rap, then he's basically just complaining about his life. It's not art. Get back in line, French.

  • adam

how yall gunna call him a emcee? and lol thats why he sounds bad. i was shocked hes from ny. hes a disgrace

Big Guwop is the realest rapper and heres why. Fuck this cunt, Hip Hip is all about the lyrics for a start, so how can he say this? His music is truly embarrassing and he moans and groans in each song

  • Meezy

Don't blame him. He just saw a market for shitty music and decided to exploit it. I'd do the same thing If i was him. Blame the fans that buy and demand crap music, not the guy who sees an opportunity to make money and takes it. Ps- I hate his music, I hate that someone like him is popular, but i don't blame him, i blame hip hop audiences

  • Shocked

The fans were really expecting lyricism and delivery from this clown????? lol Truly baffling, I thought it was obvious by the amount of clown ass features

  • Anonymous

lol @ this even being a question. This sand nigga's wack as fuck. He's prime example of how weak niggas can get into the game by connections and politics. Whenever niggas big him up they always talk about his beat selection. I ain't never hear anybody speak on his flow, lyrics, delivery etc. He's like a slow, wack version of Mase. This nigga's part of a trend where no-talent niggas found their way into the rapgame when the bar was lowered. They keep emphasizing that they're not rappers but hustlers to not be held accountable for their wackness. Niggas hide behind 'swag', production, features and affiliations, but I see right through them. This nigga can wear ten bearskin hoodies he's still wack to me.

I do not understand why it is now acceptable to openly say that although you want to be a rapper, you don't want to rap. this whole "I'm not trying to be Lyrical" thing is wild, if you're not trying to be "lyrical" then you're not trying to be a rapper.

  • YESSIR

I CAN RESPECT ANYONE THAT STAYS IN THEIR RESPECTIVE LANE. HOWEVER, AS A FAN OF THE ARTFORM, I WANT EMCEES TO AT LEAST ATTEMPT TO DROP SOME COOL RHYMES. I GUESS OUTSIDE OF YMCMB, THERE ARE NOT MANY EMCEES THAT WORK TIRELESSLY TO IMPROVE THEIR CRAFT OF LYRICISM. #PRAYFORBIRDMAN

@SeriouslyBro: Uhh wasnt like California Love was a lyrical song. The song wasnt even Pacs to begin with. The reason they love that song is for the famous Roger sample and the hook and it just bumping. The examples you bring up shows youre one of those dudes that got in to hiphop a few years ago, possibly after the media sensationlisim with 2pac & Bigger ONLY after they died? Or when Eminem or 50 came? and now youre TRYING to sound like a hiphop head. Even tho i agreed with SOME of the things you said you also pointed out some wrong shit.

^this. 100% co-sign. One of the best comments I've seen in HipHopDX.

  • Trey

Though I do like more lyrical artists more, I can respect someone not trying to put on airs and put in useless rhymes for the music to seem more important than it is. I appreciate someone knowing their style and sticking with it. French isn't my fave, but I can at least give him his props.

  • Nick Newman

This isn't even news. Everybody knows this dude isn't "lyrical". Gotta make news outta anything these days...
