In the days leading up to the release of Daft Punk’s newest studio album, Random Access Memories, The Creators Project is highlighting the project’s collaborators in a series of interviews titled “The Collaborators.” The newest episode features producer/rapper Pharrell Williams who’s featured on Daft Punk’s “Get Lucky” alongside musician Nile Rodgers.

During his interview, the beatsmith went on to detail how he was able to partner with the group for their collaboration. According to Pharrell, after linking up with Daft Punk at a Madonna party he eventually caught up with the group while in Paris.

“The robots sort of reached out and they kept trying to figure out when we were gonna be in Paris,” said Pharrell. “And so finally I ended up in Paris. They were like ‘Well, what have you been working on?’ And I played them some of the stuff I had been working on and I was like ‘Yeah, I’m kinda like in this Nile Rodgers place right now.’ And they looked at each other and I was like ‘What? You guys don’t like [that]?’ And they were like ‘Okay, so this is what we want you to write to.’ So, they play it. Nile Rodgers is actually playing in the track.”

With a sound that Pharrell describes as being “vivid” and reminiscent of “the mid ‘70s, early ‘80s of a different universe,” “Get Lucky” is a song the producer hopes is far from synthetic.

“It’s beyond 3D. It’s like 4D. It’s in your mind. You don’t need MDMA for this music. Cause the music is so incredibly vivid,” Pharrell explained. “People lost respect for the groove. Everything is just so synthetic that like it doesn’t really–it’s just missing the gut…Somewhere outside of the ether that we exist in is a multitude of realms of possibility and alternate directions. And I think they just went in those libraries and just dusted off those things. It’s kinda like the mid ‘70s, early ‘80s of a different universe and dimension. Not of this one.”

Daft Punk’s Random Access Memories is due out on May 21.
