Nas Invests Six-Figure Sum In Mass Appeal Magazine

Nas is now in the print and digital publishing game, buying a stake in veteran magazine that first put him and Large Professor on the same cover.

Eleven years ago, Queens, New York natives Nas and Large Professor graced the cover of Mass Appeal's 18th issue. Now, Nas is a partial owner of the respected lifestyle magazine and website. Forbes.com reported the undisclosed six-figure investment this morning.

“I always liked what Mass Appeal represented,” Nas told the wealth and business publication. “They invested into the culture … I saw their vision for what they planned and I thought I could add value across the board.”

Nas is not Mass Appeal's only new investor. White Owl Capital Partners, which is said to be a newer investment group with international holdings, also invested in the quarterly—which is resuming after a five-year print break.

With one of Nas' onetime collaborators, Ray Benzino having rather notoriously owned a stake in The Source magazine in the 1990s and 2000s, a publication that praised releases from the Boston, Massachusetts rapper/producer. Nas was asked how he will broach such conflict. Responding to what could be potentially written of the Def Jam veteran, Nas said, "I don’t want to see it until it’s out. I won’t get involved with that at all … I won’t touch anything, they’re free to say whatever they want. They can say I’m a psychopath, they can say I’m a sweetheart."

The full interview on Nas' business ventures is available at Forbes.com. Mass Appeal's 52nd issue features Earl Sweatshirt, and an A$AP Family Tree.

"It happens, its a business move. Just like filing bankruptcy is a business move" So Wesley Snipes going to prison for not paying taxes was a business move? It's a choice alot of so called well off people make because they either invested poorly, got scammed out of their money, or just blew it on spending sprees like Nic Cage did. It's not the end of the world, especially if you still have the ability to make money, but it's still not a good look.

  • Fuck Queensbridge

I sincerly hope this nigga goes bankrupt.

"then you go to court, and you actually get cut a deal from the original amount you have to pay. Plenty of people do it" Plenty of people also pay their taxes on time.

    • blaqonlinedotcom

Your right, most people do just pay their taxes. But were not talking about a couple hundred or thousand dollars in these cases. We may be talking about hundreds of thousands or millions. It happens, its a business move. Just like filing bankruptcy is a business move.

  • blackula

Not sure about this move. Who still buys magazines these days?

People talk a lot about Nas money, but truth is Nas has made wise investments that represent him well. Please understand, Nas never meant to truly have a label, it was more of a way to pull in more money per record by having his own imprint, and give his people a way to a way to make money under Nas.. lets face it, most record labels were not going to sign the "Bravehearts" but by owning "Ill Will" Nas could sign them, and made money with little to no budget. Having their own imprint gives artists more power than only being signed to a label. Nas also is part owner of Guerilla Unions Rock the Bells tour, Nice deal with Hennessy and is currently teaming up with Niche Productions in Australia to curate "The Movement" Hip Hop Festival. Lets not forget Nas was also co-wrote Belly and has directed and and written movies that went straight to film festivals. These are only his public investments. And all this talk about taxes... you guys are funny, being late on payng your taxes is actually a business move. Its like this, you dont pay your taxes, and you wait till the government contacts you, then you go to court, and you actually get cut a deal from the original amount you have to pay. Plenty of people do it. Its a bitch to go through, but it happens.

You had me until the last part. You don't pay tax one year and you're done. You do it every year, well every year you make money. Yes it takes time for the IRS to go after you, but is Nas or anyone going to employ this strategy every few years? No. So obviously, you're not entirely up on what you are talking about, don't mean that in a mean way. Second, unless you take all your money and go hide it under your mattress and claim you smoked or gambled it away, you really think you can just go to court and get a 40cent on the dollar settlement when you have millions in the bank or even if its less, if you have enough to cover the whole thing, the IRS is not negotiating with you and by that time, the IRS has already been in touch with your bank(s) and know exactly what you have. Lastly, if you make money and you just sit there and don't pay your taxes, that's tax evasion and you don't just go to court and negotiate a lower amount. That does not happen. If it gets to that point, you are going to jail and the IRS still gets paid if there are assets they can seize. They unfortunately call the shots, not the taxpayer, so the taxpayer does not tell them what he will pay. Those ads you see on TV are for something else. Nas is doing better again, but he blew threw what he made and was broke. He nas Nas Esco remember. He was living as such. Do you think he worked into to court with his financial statements showing a 5, 10+ million net worth and tried to have the judge go easy on his alimony?

  • blaqonlinedotcom

I guess no one here has ever been to massappeal.com. It is a website as well. Its a quarterly print, which puts it in a different market than other mags and adds value to each issue. If the Mass Appeal "brand" diversifies its media, to have shows, concerts, websites, tours, etc. which it will if White Owl as invested as well, it will be "Mass"ively successful

  • Anonymous

Im no business man but in the multi-media age, I would be investing into web businesses, they have more reach, a magazine can only be accessed where it's sold, a webpage can be accessed in Africa.

    • keon watts

in laymen terms , look at it like a tv show that have advertisers air their commercials. Each commercial is just like buying a page in a magazine. If you look thru the daily newspaper its compiled of Ads from Macy's, Mineke Mufflers, Dentist etc. those contracts pay well. Then consider stock opens for young rappers to invest in the stocks. Its a win win for Nas, because he can tour over seas and still live well and also be a part owner

  • TBM ADIYM

mass appeal and egotrip for the win!

"Nas is not an attention, he always been low key, ppl think he broke because he don't report his investments" People think he's broke because he doesn't pay his taxes or child support. This is the same rapper who suddenly started jumping on other people's albums, and took $300,000 then renigged at an Angola concert. I doubt he's broke broke, nor do I care either way, but if he was living large believe me it would obvious. Sort of like Jay and his money.

  • hypestyle

  • MC Kawazura

Fuck you niggas thinking he broke the nigga Nas has like 17 million dollars y'all will never see that much money

    • Big Dan

Not only is it a random number, its bogus. Nas had tax troubles recently. You don't have tax troubles if your legit money is well stacked. There is a lifestyle, sports, ent magazine sponsored by Red Bull and they interviewed Nas a few months back and while dude did not say he was broke, he said he listened to bad financial advise and is starting over..his words. Isn't that clue enough? And less we forget, 100,000, is six figures. So this investment, which could have been as low as that, does not mean he has it like that. He actually should not have put money in an effing magazine, especially an obscure one. Even Newsweek just went all digital last January and most others are struggling. Nas still has bad advisers.

    • dentaldamboy

Where did you get that random number from?

  • Anonymous

How can he invest money when he don't have any and money he makes goes to the tax people he must be borrowing which is a bad move

  • huh?

Why does it only have 18 issues after all these years?

    • blaqonlinedotcom

has 52, but it is a quarterly magazine, which actually raises the value of each issue

    • dentaldamboy

The article is pretty clear that the 52nd issue is currently in print. Are you a welfare recipient Jay-Z fan?

  • dentaldamboy

This is a terrible investment. I wonder who he borrowed the money from to make the investment in the first place. If he really wanted to make money, he should have invested in Bronald Oil & Gas.

    • blaqonlinedotcom

MSG stock has risen steadily since it has gone public, from $18 to $57, not to fast, but very steady and it continues to rise. I've made a considerable amount of money off this investment stock. Not to mention its quite cool being a part owner in the Knicks, Liberty, Rangers, Fuse TV, LA Forum and much more

    • Anonymous

Agreed been stocking up on them for a while now . Quite a while before all the media attention

    • Big Dan

If you put your money in Bitcoin, take quick profits my brother. Rising too fast - like 30-200 in a couple months? Speculation. Suckers will be left holding the bag soon.

    • Big D

Nope he should have invested in Bitcoins
