Maino recently showed off his acting skills playing a soft nerd in ItsTheReal‘s latest video “Beef Wit Us.” Now, the Bedford Stuyvesant Brooklyn rapper has another new gig on the stage as he will play the lead roll in Freedom, a Hip Hop musical about unjust incarceration.

The musical is said to address what the playwrights believe is the issue of false imprisonment. According to the press release, “Jurors go into trials thinking that if a defendant was seen committing a crime, and they confessed to doing the crime, they are guilty. However, statistics show that in 25% of the cases where the defendant was exonerated because of DNA, they had made incriminating statements, confessed, or plead guilty. Mistaken identifications account for a third of wrongful convictions. Statistics reveal innocent people get convicted every day.”

The play is based around the real life false arrest and conviction of David Ranta in 1991. Ranta was arrested and convicted of murdering rabbi Chaskel Werzberger. On March 21, 2013 after serving over 20 years in prison, Ranta was released from prison and became a free man.
