Stevie Wonder Criticizes Lil Wayne Over Offensive "Karate Chop" Remix Lyric

Stevie Wonder comments on Lil Wayne's reference to Emmett Till on the "Karate Chop" remix.

It looks like Lil Wayne isn't quite out of the woods with regard to his controversial lyric in the remix of Future's "Karate Chop." Now, one of R&B's most celebrated figures is taking Weezy to task over his notorious reference to Emmett Till.

In a recent report from the Associated Press, legendary singer-songwriter Stevie Wonder commented on Wayne's infamous lyric that he “beat that pussy up like Emmett Till.” Wonder said that the YMCMB rapper crossed a line in equating Till's racially motivated murder to sex, and added that someone should have been there put Weezy in check before the track's release.

"You can't equate that to Emmett Till. You just cannot do that," he explained. "I think you got to have someone around you that - even if they are the same age or older - is wiser to say, 'Yo, that's not happening. Don't do that'...sometimes people have to put themselves in the place of people who they are talking about. Imagine if that happened to your mother, brother, daughter or your son. How would you feel? Have some discernment before we say certain things. That goes for me or any other writer."

In the wake of the song's release, the family of Emmett Till released a statement condemning the song and demanding an apology from Lil Wayne. Epic Records ultimately pulled the "unauthorized" remix and issued an apology.

Someone who whines about a quote doesn't have a life.

You sound like an uneducated piece of shit. Do yourself a favor boy and stay behind your mama's computer screen. It will be alot safer for you that way.

    • donnis mac

What a stupid comment. So he should stay on the computer instead of getting off of it and experiencing real life? This is what you offer these 12-22 year olds, your "education".

"I'm speaking about his music that has stood against segregation, apartheid, hunger, and for love and unity" None of which has anything to do with a line in a rap song.

    • Anonymous

No child, it does have to do with the line. You can't see it because your head's stuck way up your ass.

    • Quoteman is a faggot

You see what i wrote the name speak for itself. You gotta be the only dickhead to quote niggas comments, come back with a response, and then don't have no kind of point after. Totally waste of sperm moms should have took you up the ass or swollowed you.

"Stevie is more Hip Hop AND Black music than you EVER will be" Must be the head nod thing huh? lol That's gangsta.

    • Anonymous

No child, I'm speaking about his music that has stood against segregation, apartheid, hunger, and for love and unity. A punk like you would only relate to a comedic action.

  • stfublinddude

that was a recylced line. said that shit before n noone complained smh

  • Anonymous

Was Stevie up in arms last November when 5 black youths in Seattle beat and killed 3 white guys? What Wayne said was stupid, but it was just a random lyric. To get offended by something that was created to be offensive meaning the genre, makes zero sense. Whose he going to blast next, 2 Chainz for making an Amber alert reference? Hip hop isn't meant for you so shut your mouth.

  • hello kitty

i'ma beat reginae carter pussy up soon as her flower blooms bitch ass ninja....i mite jus get my lil dykin ass cousin to get at her now...hell they the same age and she go hard..have yo lil daughter on instagram wit her lil tatties out gettn her lil clit popped u gon say dat ignit ass shit??

  • Doesn'tMatter

As much as I fight for the freedom of speech and take pride in rappers being to do or say as they wish, Stevie is right. There is a certain line you shouldn't cross, especially when referring to important historical figures. Wayne has never released a song addressing serious issues (like racial stereotypes, or even family like Ye's Family Business), which is why I personally can't hail him as anywhere near the best rapper. Slick Rick is better, he does stories. Wayne doesn't tell stories much, he uses random lines to that are funny, angering or strike some sort of reaction from the audience as shock value. That's why he works well on Pop-songs, this shock-value element is usually missing. This is an example of that shock value not working in his favor. These dumbed-down lyrics are hurting society. To think, their are now kids out there that only know who Emmett Till is because of Wayne. That's horrifically sad. You can do better Wayne. So either do it, or pursue skateboarding full-time like you said you would.

  • Dick B

    Stevie Wonder still dominating.

Someone should do an Emmett Till on his children !

  • nigga creep

Nuthin but dumbed-down lyrics come outta that midget. All he do is talk nonsense and lies.He Baby's lil slave.

  • QB

If nothing else, maybe all these kids will actually read up on Emmett Till, as well as all the horrific abuses and injustices that White folks have committed against Black people in US history. It's not about blaming the "White Man" it's about raising awareness for everybody to collectively say "Fuck racism", so that this type of injustice never happens again.

  • Money First

Its a double-edged sword when it comes to freedom of speech but ultimately as a writer in any game, music, TV, Film, etc you have to be mindful with certain things you say.

  • Anonymous

I'm white 27 years old and honestly I'm knowledgable about a lot of history black or white or what have you, heard the name before Emmett Till, didn't know the story and checked it out this am and it made my stomach turn with the funeral pictures or wake pictures whatever it was ( i know dx haters will rip me if I don't have every detail correct) Now when it comes to music I am all for the freedom of speech and it's entertainment, but as an African American as Weezy is I don't know how he can write that down then go in verse say it and not feel it needed to be removed, I know Wayne's creativity has dropped off, but man this shows dude has really run out of words and things to say also the punchline was a typical Wayne punch about eating or beating pussy and it wasn't even good it shows how much he really has used that metaphor because he went as low as he can especially being an African American.. As Keyshawn and ESPN would say, "COME ON MAN!!"

  • viggo

how is this still making news? what about when wayne said "im killin these hoes like the nigga ted bundy" :/

  • geminiman7

Niggas is gettin' dumber & reckless. In a couple more years we'll hear some new rapper like soulja boy say "I PLOW HOES LIKE MARTIN LUTHER KING YAAYYYY". Idiots.

  • BKNY Kid

Oh so now the remix is "unauthorized"? Lmao.

  • layoffhim

He should talk to waynes daddy baby.

  • Hip Hop please

    Wonderful Go Stevie!

  • Anonymous

Stevie Wonder is friends with Drake, interestingly enough... Someone in Wayne's camp needs to try and get him to apologise.

    • Anonymous

they're not really "friends". they don't hang out at each others cribs. they dont call each other for help when their in a tight situation. they probably met a few times at award shows or in a studio.

  • Anonymous

Are people really getting mad over Emmett Till lyrics? I don't know how many times that line has been used.

    • idk do you

some old school ice cube, i think it was lethal injection or predator. it was kinda like kayne...cube compared getting treated in the 90's to the emmitt til situation

    • rozay!

"Last night I cried tears of joy, what did I do to deserve this? Not to dwell on the past, but to keep it real, I gotta represent for Emmett Till."

    • Anonymous

The only other Emmett Till line I can think of is in "Through the Wire" by Kanye - and that's not offensive, that's Kanye using him as a metaphor for what happened to him in his car crash.

    • INeedADanish

Where an Emmett Till reference has been used the same way? Name five, would like to check them out :)

  • Anonymous

One of R&B's most celebrated figures? Stevie is beyond R&B. Step ya game up DX

  • lil wayne

  • bcsbd

Some of you NIGGAZ are dumb as hell!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Anonymous

    Shut up Stevie Wonder.

  • Big Bang

Wonder couldnt have said it any better. Not one person in his camp said nothing to this walking disease eat any bitch pussy ass faggot. Not one person in his camp was smart enough to tell this nigga that corny ass Punchline was crossing the line. I ain't surprised cause if niggas aint tell this dude about trying to learn how to skateboard at the age of 30 and wearing clown dress suits i ain't surprise. On another note this was Future's remix song. Future should have told him to no spit that corny shit.

  • Dee

Wayne is a bitch dat sucks dick dis nigga been wack dope head like his mama

  • Frank

this nigga wayne a cornball brother he could have said beat that pussy like nicole simpson.

  • Anonymous

bottom line: lil wayne exposed the kids to emmett till's sacrifice.

    • Anonymous

...for the kids that sex, violence and drugs are a problem, he isn't exposing them to shit. They live with that, so hiding the issues that plague them won't help them.

    • Anonymous

He made the sacrifice of speaking out. He knew that there was a possibility he was going to be murdered, that's why he was unique. He was murdered for his beliefs.

    • Joshua

He wasn't sacrificed he was murdered. There is a big difference. Sacrifice is something done willingly. Let him rest in peace. Lil Wayne is also exposing the kids to sex drugs and violence too guess we should commend him for that too.
