Hip Hop Album Sales: The Week Ending 2/3/2013

A$AP Rocky's debut studio album "Long.Live.A$AP" slides down the charts, while Macklemore and Ryan Lewis get a slight uptick with "The Heist."

Now in his third week on the charts, A$AP Rocky continues to hold onto the top 20 with his debut studio album Long.Live.A$AP, which dips out of the top 10 with a decrease in sales. Macklemore and Ryan Lewis are closing in on the Harlem, New York emcee with their independent debut The Heist, which creeps down a spot from last week but keeps selling strong on the strength of their chart-topping hit "Thrift Shop."

The sole Hip Hop artist to make a splash on the charts was Da' T.R.U.T.H., whose latest album Love, Hope & War sold just enough to land the Christian rapper's latest in the top 100.

Check below to see who had the strongest week on the charts.

A$AP Rocky Lives Long On The Charts

A$AP Rocky has been selling strong. After making his name on the mixtape circuit over the past few years, the Harlem, New York native parlayed buzz from his breakout project Live.Love.A$AP - as well as appearances on T.I.'s Trouble Man: Heavy Is The Head and Big Boi's Vicious Lies And Dangerous Rumors - to score a chart-topping entry three weeks back. His first week at retail closed in on 140,000 copies sold, which was enough to beat out Kidz Bop 23 by 58,000 units.

After sliding from No. 1 to 7, the RCA/Polo Grounds continues to descend to No. 13 with 25,000 copies sold, distinctively less than the 38,000 he moved last week. The placement puts him between Local Natives' Hummingbird and a compilation of tracks from the 2013 Grammy nominees, and ups his overall sales to 201,000 copies. Rocky, who responded to Tyler, The Creator's criticism of "Fuckin' Problems" last week, has received critical acclaim for the LP, which features guest appearances from DrakeKendrick Lamar and 2 Chainz, and has spawned a pair of singles from the album including "Goldie" and "Fuckin' Problems," which was recently certified gold.

Macklemore & Ryan Lewis Hold On Strong With The Heist

That Macklemore and Ryan Lewis reign just won't let up. After bowing at No. 2 with The Heist last October with 78,000 copies sold, the Seattle-based duo has continued to thrive thanks to the success of their now double-platinum-certified single "Thrift Shop," which has resided atop the charts for the past few weeks. This week, the album dips just a bit from No. 14 to 16, moving an additional 21,000 copies for a total tally of 313,000, which means the LP is slowly moving towards the gold-certified mark.

The group also recently shot a video for "Can't Hold Us," which could keep the momentum of The Heist sustained..

T.I. needs to release another single, wth is he doing?

  • Anonymous

"More respectable than what Meek is doin" Yeah, Meek's only navigating through a rap career by touring and working with numerous artists while you sit on a porch somewhere and drink your life expectancy away. Congrats. Really. I'm sure Meek will want to meet you and ask for advice on how to be a productive member of society.

  • alphs2

    kendrick is really a legend.

  • casper21

if Kendrick can hit platinum in the next few months by releasing another few singles and Macklemore hit gold, which he might with a video for can't hold us, really catchy tune with a ton of cross over appeal, that would be impressive.

  • hqr

kendrick lamar, the man is a king, a fucking legend.

  • bizzalls

Yo, this Macklemore muthafucka is blowin me away man!! Their album came out WAAAYYY before T.I.'s, Asap Rocky's, etc, and they're selling more each week than them??? WTF? HOW? Rocky's album just came out, this is his third week and sells 25k, Macklemore sells 21k?? Shit is crazy!! Their shit has been consistent as fuck, their sales not dwindling whatsoever! That's how you sell records! These dudes are bringing in the money right now...

ATTN: aspiring rappers that most likely suck anyway get a real job and stay away from the music industry. the only artists on the list that are selling ANYTHING are controlled by conglomerates that are eating off of live shows/merch. i wouldn't be surprised to know that ALL of these names are starving. you drive a nice car. stay in nice hotels. let's see where you stay when the label thinks you're done. music industry is dead. rap is dead. entertainment today is a freak show that captures the minds of the sick.

  • Daviiiid

Damn king kendrick Lamar, the best rapper is saving hip hop sales

  • Doubl Negative

Anyone who supports A$AP, leagally or illegally ought to be ashamed of themselves. There are so many erudite, talented rap artists who don't get the shine they deserve because all the attention is reserved for assholes like Rocky and Wayne. Chino XL, Skyzoo, Fresh Daily, Blu and John Robinson are the emcees people need to support in order to keep our seen alive. Rule of thumb, if Premo doesn't play an artist on his HeadQCourterz show, it's not worth fucking with.

I agree with the PREMO shit. But dudes like APATHY, CELPH TITLED, the whole DEMIGODZ clique, they should be way more prominent in the underground at least. They're fuckin animals! John Robinson? C'mon son, I've heard his albums, production average as fuck, nothing special about dude. Fresh Daily? He's decent. But yea, real hip hop needs to be on top again...

    • Nem

thats a shame, everybody should support this album...production and flows were sick, reminded me of bone thugs and outkast..this album represented hip-hop well, wen chino gets better beats maybe he can sell records

  • Jake

Jesus Piece is going good, gonna pass the 200K mark before RED did and just off the strength off Celebration, pretty good

  • Anonymous

So A$AP passed you in just one week huh Game??? With his shit leaking and all...s/o to the REAL COMPTON CITY G KDot who's close to platinum status...#numbersdontlie

  • zeerax

thank you king kendrick lamar. Our saviour !

  • f5f

kendrick already saved hip hop and now, he's going to save hip hop sales with an uncompromised album. He's going plat because he still has to release GKMC the film + Poetic Justice as the next single (+video)

    • Rashid Muhammad

Of course it's gonna change once every single black rapper converts to the Nation Of Gods & Earths and start dropping that true knowledge of the good ol sweet late 80's/early 90's

    • ^

      Somebody's a bitter hater.

    • Anonymous

kendrcik is a gay rapper doing well in a time where gay rappers are the only thing that sell in rap. funny cuz no one over 21 i know is talking about kendrick lamar. it's a bunch of nerds online saying "ya bish" buying double copies so they can send the pic to kendricks twitter and get some attention back.

    • Anonymous

First off his beats were not "fruity loop beats" they weren't the slightest bit pop for the most part. Secondly sound evolves, so the sound of the beats almost never has anything to do with "real hip hop" as long as there is some hip hop influence involved. Real hip hop refers to the actual craft of rapping: lyricism, flow, storytelling, punchlines, wordplay, a message, etc.

    • toppa shot

Silly dick rider. Kendrick's album hasn't saved shit yet. Garbage music is still being pumped out daily. Nothing has changed since his album came out.

    • Anonymous

what fruity loop beats are you talkin bout? what album did you listen to?

    • Anonymous

shut up Kendrick is not saving hip hop maybe on a commercial level he is being different ,but dude is not having hiphop on his back with them fruity loop beats.

    • Anonymous

I hope the movie isn't coming out cause that would be corny as fuck

  • dentaldamboy

YMCMB MMG always sell the most. Roc Nation doesn't move units.

  • jp

Everybody hating on ASAP but that song is actually Asap, Kendrick and 2Chainz's first top 10 single. So it really benefits all of them. What top 10 single or album did Tyler have?

  • Warren Peace

The last two weeks Mackelmore/Lewis have outsold Kendrick. For an indy album that came out so long ago that is absolutely amazing!! The album just seems to be picking up steam as the weeks go by. Looks like Jesus Piece will hit 200K by the end of the year.

  • frank

wow going gold is the new platinum.I dont think we will see another platinum album for a while kendrick is as good as it gets.

  • Anonymous

how is JB holding on when there is no second single

  • nuc
