Slick Rick Celebrates Birthday At Brooklyn Bowl & Receives Shout Outs From Hip Hop Legends

Slick Rick celebrates his birthday in style.

Though Slick Rick's last reception in Brooklyn was decidedly frigid, with the legend being booed during a halftime performance at the Brooklyn Nets' Barclays Center, The Ruler found a warm welcome on his birthday.

AllHipHop reports that Slick Rick celebrated his birthday with a sold-out performance and was joined by friends and family at Brooklyn Bowl in New York.

Slick Rick was accompanied by a full band and deejay as he performed some of his classics.

During the party, videos of Raekwon, Talib Kweli, Special Ed, Biz Markie, Chubb Rock, MC Lyte, Sway Calloway, and others wishing Rick a Happy Birthday were played.

“Last night was an incredible night for me as well as the Golden Era of Hip Hop. It is always great to see and perform for my fans, but to share my birthday with them at the Brooklyn Bowl was out of this world,” said the rapper.

“The highlight of the night was the Birthday shout out video from my peers. I was shocked and honored by all the kind words and stories about my career. To sum it up, I am blessed, and humbled by all the love for all of the years.”

Drake and Wayne are still viable artists selling millions. KRS is not. The Safe House comment was in direct response to your dumb ass saying how do I know what KRS has turned down before? He's basically played himself in everything he's done. That's not acting. That's called a cameo. Thanks for mentioning Drake though. Saved me time bringing up the fact Drake has acted before. Not sure why you name dropped J Cole. He had absolutely zero to do with the main point, but hey, I'll let you enjoy your fifteen seconds of shame as you prove beyond a reasonable doubt how insane you really are.

Happy Born Day Slick, 20 years from now, nobody will remember any of these cornballs who claim their "Hot" because they moved a few units. You become a Pioneer when your style and mannerisms get used by everyone in the game, and nobody pays homage.

  • Anonymous

The disrespect for this legend is unbelievable. You should be ashamed of yourself.

  • Anonymous

"I just look at Run DMC, The Beastie Boys, Public Enemy being inducted into the HOF and Eric B & Rakim being nominated" You're really going to base your argument on The Beastie Boys? lol Obviously you still bump No Sleep To Brooklyn, which while demented and sad, shows you have to go back awhile. Rakim is pretty cool. I'll give you that one, but he still hasn't dented the charts in years, while PE is mad if someone downloads their music for free despite the fact they're probably living pretty comfortably.

    • donnis mac

Offer some tangible insight that will have me or others reassess a thought or close your mouth. Run DMC, Beastie Boys, Public Enemy are ALL in the HOF. FACT. The recent charts DO NOT MATTER. What I listen to DOES NOT MATTER according to this FACT. Keep showing us how much of an idiot you are.

    • Anonymous

No matter what your pseudo-intellectual ass say, all of those guys are legends and if it weren't for them, you wouldn't have hip-hop like it is today. Show respect or shut up.

    • Anonymous

Quote-man, kill yourself for the bullshit you said.

  • Anonymous

"People who are fans of hip-hop" But the word people encompasses more than just a small % who still listen to old rap. Hip Hop isn't the same hip hop you remember. Today's younger audience doesn't care about originators, or about the message in songs. If you do, you got You Tube to take you back.

    • donnis mac

This is how I KNOW you have serious social and mental issues. "Today's younger audience doesn't care about originators, or about the message in songs" ^ when did YOU perform this WORLDWIDE census? I have seen for MYSELF here AND throughout the internet where young kids DO NOT LIKE TODAY'S MUSIC and have witnessed them listening to older music. You are WRONG. "If you do, you got You Tube to take you back." ^ so these older fans do not have VINYL, CASSETTES, CD's, or MEMORIES? So NO ONE kept their turntables or double cassette players, they only have smart-phones and PC's? People around the world are STILL paying to hear Big Daddy Kane rap. It's people like YOU who think it's all about a demographic, a certain style. If we let YOU tell the story, NO ONE over 5 years in the industry is getting royalties. YOU are SO WRONG you can NEVER BE RIGHT. WHEN WILL YOU JUST SHUT UP? YOU ARE FULL OF SH_T Quote-Man.

    • Anonymous

You're a fucking idiot, quote-man. You obviously haven't read my full answer. I said "People who are fans of hip-hop, but don't hop on the bandwagon of whatever's popular." This applies to anyone young, old, or middle-aged. I'm 21 years old and I find hip-hop of the past better than today's shit. There's young people who listen to older hip-hop. If you disagree, then you need to visit a proctologist to remove your head outta your ass. Goddamn pseudo-intellectuals.

"would ever know if KRS or Lupe has turned down any offers" I'm sure KRS turned down the lead role in Safe House lol

    • donnis mac

I understand, what ever it takes for you to be right on the internet. This is how I know you have serious social and mental issues but let's test your asinine logic........ Where is Ross and Wale and Drake for "Safe House"? Why isn't Wayne starring in the movie? Where's J. Cole's acting debut? Didn't Denzel know to get Kendrick because the young, coveted demographic would flock to see the movie because K. Dot's in it? Since "Everything is catered to the younger crowd", where's this generation's "Juice"? "Who's The Man"? "Belly"? "In Too Deep"? "Krush Groove"? They can't even put together a "Paid In Full". Shut up and leave us alone.

  • Anonymous

"But everyone else would disagree" Who exactly is everyone? lol Everything is catered to the younger crowd. When was the last time you saw KRS One in a movie? TV commercial? On a talk show? Never... Now take a second to think about why. Lyrical skill isn't appreciated like you wish it was. If it was, Lupe would probably being doing State Farm commercials.

    • donnis mac

Like Quote-Man would ever know if KRS or Lupe has turned down any offers. Another example of him passing off this pseudo intelligence to gullible kids like he would know what's going on.

    • Anonymous

There you go again, quote-man, making up bullshit. You obviously hate hip-hop, yet you're on a hip-hop website. Go jack off to Starships or Marvin's Room. "Who exactly is everyone?" People who are fans of hip-hop, but don't hop on the bandwagon of whatever's popular.

    • Ice-T

Quote-man. Remember Art of Rap last year??? Well, KRS was in there.

    • youngsta

thank you man! lol, someone understands.

  • Anonymous

"Grandmaster Flash & The Furious 5 don't have a lengthy catalog, are THEY NOT LEGENDS?" Time moves on. I'm sure at one point people thought KRS One and Guru were legends, but things change. Taste changes. When hip hop became more about money than substance all these old school catz became obsolete. It's not a diss, it's just what happened.

    • donnis mac

Your asinine logic is humorous Quote-Man. While you sit here and try vigorously to get these kids to believe what you say, I just look at Run DMC, The Beastie Boys, Public Enemy being inducted into the HOF and Eric B & Rakim being nominated and laugh at you. And this is why people are circling your comments like vultures. In your demented mind you have the absolute knowledge that you want to impose on CHILDREN, and ADULTS are here telling YOU to STOP IT.

    • ekwiven2

I don't know why they're mad ...after all you're from the generation that spends it pocket money on making stars out of: 1) a rapping correctional officer/turned studio gangster(Rick Ross). 2) an ET sound-a-like with dread locks who gets photographed kissing his man / boss and wears leopard print leggings(Lil Wayne) 3) a black barbie doll with butt implants (Nicki Minaj) You stand up for what you believe in, Youngsta! LMAO!!

    • youngsta

LMAO you niggas mad??? Fuck all y'all all the shit I said is true no matter how mad you niggas get

  • Hip hop

Nas himself even said it on Loco Motive, off of his Life Is Good is album..."in my truck, played The Great Adventures of Slick Rick, buggin' out on how his imagination was so sick..." It's pathetic because all people care for nowadays are beats... Lyrics aren't as empathized anymore.. Y'all can bump that nonsense all day, substance less material.

  • Hip hop

"The Great Adventures of Slick Rick" is a classic.... Heavily revered by many critics and artists.. Too many of these 90"s babies ruining music today..

  • Hip hop

After maybe reading two comments, it's safe to say that half of today's Hip Hop listeners are ignorant as hell.. Straight up.. Slick may not be popular by today's standards, but he's a pioneer of the art of "lifestyle raps." people forget that he's the original "playboy" in hip hop. People need to educate themselves on the history of music.. Why speak on artist that you have absolutely no idea about ? Lol. He's old? So, isn't Jay-Z, Dr.Dre, etc. not saying he's as successful, but he has had many of your favorite artist look up to him/bite his style-- Nas, Kanye, Big Boi, Lloyd Banks, just to name a few... Smh so many idiots on this website, it really brings down the overall experience.

  • Anonymous

"he's always on this site running his mouth about rappers he dislikes that everyone loves" Everyone? lol There are millions of people on this planet who have all types of opinions on music. If you can't handle one, or get upset because I didn't praise Slick Rick then I suggest you seek help immediately.

  • Anonymous

"Why is it that hip-hop is the only genre of music with the least respect for its pioneers" Cause unlike other genres, alot of these older rappers don't have a lengthy enough catelog of music in which to properly judge them. I'm not dissin Slick Rick, but the fact is he's not a legend, he's a personality.

    • Anonymous

This is the nonsense that Quote-Man submits to assert his "opinion" as being fact. Grandmaster Flash & The Furious 5 don't have a lengthy catalog, are THEY NOT LEGENDS? Rick's talent of storytelling is LEGENDARY. His flamboyance is LEGENDARY. His rap accent is LEGENDARY. Slick Rick The Ruler is a LEGEND in Hip Hop.

    • Anonymous

You're wrong. Slick IS a legend.

  • dadukestin

"and your favourite rappers does not have one classic song" Nobody has classic songs anymore. The point is compared to the production values the rappers have today, Slick Rick is truly a dinosaur.

    • Anonymous

      your another dumb fu@k

    • Killem Dafoe

Yet we still remember the dinosaurs and the impact they had on the planet while they ruled. Nobody is gonna be talking about today's crop of rappers 30 years from now. We will forget about these guys in less than 2 years.

    • Anonymous
