A$AP Rocky Says Underground Hip Hop Influenced "1 Train"

A$AP Rocky discusses how his eight-man cut "1 Train" is an ode to '90s underground rap.

When the final tracklist for A$AP Rocky's anticipated debut LongLiveA$AP first came out, one track that had fans excited was the monster collaborative cut "1 Train." Now, in a recent interview with NBC's The Grio via Xclusives Zone, the Harlem upstart discusses the cipher-style song.

A$AP Rocky explained that he wanted to hearken back to the '90s underground era with the eight-man song. He added that he believes the seven artists he selected to jump on the song - Kendrick Lamar, Action Bronson, Yelawolf, Danny Brown, Big K.R.I.T. and Joey Bada$$ - are some of the best lyricists of the new generation in Hip Hop.

"I really wanted to take it back to the essence of the '90s; it was the generation of the underground," he explained. "Even though I have a lot of mainstream appeal, I come from the underground, and I just wanted to give back to that. That's why I was really strategic on who I picked to be in the line-up…with Joey Bada$$ and Action Bronson and Danny Brown, they're from the underground. Yelawolf, he's really underrated if you ask me. I think he's one of the best lyricists of our day. I feel like everybody on that track has a value in our generation."

Lol people don't really get hip hop. not truly. you make like certain artists and certain sounds, but if that isn't who you are, then you can't be up there trying to pull nas if you're waka flocka flame, although he probably listens to more nas than most people here. Its better for an artist to do the music they want to do and reflects them than try to be anybody else. you can't hate them for that.

Oh no! Someone has never booked a hip hop show before. Drake sells out arena's (17,000 to 21,000 seats)you dummy. That's a far cry from some dark club/bar that holds 100-2,000ish people aka "The Underground". Also Drakes "So Far Gone" came out in 2009 its time you get with the now. Ya retard.

  • BOY

Underground Hip Hop? Wayne IS underground hip hop! He's from the 90's and is STILL the KIGN of HIP HOP! The track in all honesty was WACK except for Danny Brown & Yelawolf. Other than that KenDICK was overrated by you hip hop dickheads, Big Krit was BORING, Joey Faga$$ was a little bitch and A$AP raps like a TRANNY GRANNY! Wayne is still the KIGN of HIP HOP! LONG LIVE WEEZY!

  • Bee

well it definitely influenced his name, sounds like Aesop Rock. Whatever happened to underground rap? The youth didn't continue the culture, generation yolo sucks

loool about aesop rock. this must be a joke.

    • Anonymous

his name is Rocky because his actual name is Rakim - named after The God MC himself. His roots and upbringing was in 90s hiphop, and it is impossible to just copy what was done back then, or else people would say he's biting, and the culture has grown since then - so he's putting his own twist on what he grew up on.

    • Bee

first off you're a fucking idiot, Aesop Rock was one of the biggest figures from underground 90s hip hop, he's still relevant and just released "Skelethon", have you heard of Atmosphere, Grouch or Cage? gtfo. ASAP Rocky is definitely a play on Aesop Rock and it's sad that he's become more famous. you don't know shit about real hip hop.

    • John Blaze

First off A$AP stands for "Always Strive And Prosper"(most of the time, it has other meanings too). Second off, Rocky is a play on his government name.(his mom named him after the god mc RAKIM ALLAH cause she is a huge fan.) Third off, I listen to all levels of hip hop and i have NEVER heard of a fuckin "Aesop Rock" anywhere outside of the comment section on these A$AP articles.

    • Bruce banner

why does he go by rocky? probably because his name is Rakim and its a nickname. Aesop and ASAP Rocky are both dope, i dont know why you have to like one or the other

    • Bee

No diss to Asap Rocky, I haven't heard much of him but yes his name does sound suspiciously like Aesop Rock and I'm talking in general, the only young emcees that I can think of who have underground sensibilities extending beyond 1 track are maybe Grieves and Danny Brown whereas in the 90s nearly every emcee underground and otherwise was dope. Props on the track but gen yolo as a whole continually insists on perpetuating shit hop, and real hip hop is practically a dead culture

    • Anonymous

Somebody does something good by putting an 90's underground type track with a whole gang of dope lyricists and no hooks on his major label debut album and the so-called heads are STILL mad and whiny. Y'all are something else...

    • HipHop son

First y should ppl stfu when ASAP clearly stole Aesop's name. I understand ASAP is the name of his crew or whatever, but y use the rocky? Dude prolly wished he had half the talent as Aesop

    • flo

you niggas got to move on with the whole asap rocky's name looks like aseop rock argument. just shut the fuck up.

  • Anonymous

I like how Rocky respects hip hop culture.

  • NEmesis

naw yelawolf ruined the track wit his off-flow ass...nigga dont know how long rhymes gotta be

    • Anonymous

i think its funny when people have there own unique dope flow people hate n call it "off" but when they swagger jack its dope fuck that lets bring back the no biting rule more then half these wack ass beat makers n rappers would be out of jobs yelawolf n big krit in my opinion went the hardest on that song

    • Anonymous

No its because you have no sense of flow yourself

  • Clint Barton

Yelawolf is underrated. He's dope af. That whole track is sick tho!
