Hip Hop Album Sales: The Week Ending 11/25/2012

Rihanna scores her first chart-topping album with "Unapologetic," while Nicki Minaj's repackaged sophomore album fails to make a dent on the charts.

After a handful of veterans cracked last week's chart, this week sees a crop of newer artists holding it down on the Top 200. While it may seem hard to believe that Rihanna is yet to score a number one album, she accomplished just that with Unapologetic, her seventh album in seven consecutive years.

Meanwhile, Nicki Minaj's re-release of her sophomore album, Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded The Re-Up, failed to match her expectations and missing the Top 25. The LP debuted at No. 26 on the charts, perhaps a confirmation of her concerns that the sales would reflect the album not being offered in certain retail outlets.

Finally, R&B singers had a strong week on the chart. Keyshia Cole's latest album Woman To Woman had a healthy debut at No. 10 with 96,000 sold, while Ne-Yo and The Weeknd kept on strong with R.E.D. and Trilogy, respectively holding ground at No. 31 and 32.

Rihanna Is Unapologetic About Topping The Charts

It's taken Rihanna seven consecutive years of dropping albums annually, but she finally managed to crown the charts with her latest offering Unapologetic. Featuring guest appearances from Future, Eminem and David Guetta, the LP tops the chart with 238,000 copies sold, bolstered by a performance slot on Saturday Night Live and her number one single "Diamonds." The numbers are solid for the Bajan crooner, whose last album Talk That Talk sold 198,000 copies in its first week and was later certified platinum.

Nicki Minaj Couldn't Re-Up With Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded Re-Release

Nicki Minaj seemed to have it all figured out with the re-release of her sophomore album Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded The Re-Up. That is, until she made an appearance on a New York City radio show explaining that the LP wasn't going to do well on account of certain retail giants neglecting the project. Consequently, the album, which features eight new tracks, bumped up from No. 95 to 26 on the chart, selling only 36,000 copies in its first week. The repackage also features guest appearances from Cassie, Ciara and Lil Wayne.

I'm so proud of Adele for going Diamond!!! It really shows that people will buy your record if it's worth buying. No gimmicks, no selling sex, no bullshit!! Just straight great quality music. Lady Gaga, Rihanna, 2 chains, Nicki Minaj, Lil wayne not even Beyonce's ass will be able to do that(even though she is a good singer). Damn that broad went diamond! I didn't even think that shit was even possible anymore. Sure alot people will download your stuff, but that can't stop it from having an impact commercially.

Y re-package something that's been out not even a year? 8 new tracks should be save for the next album, or do a free ep mixtape. If you are going to put Rihanna, keisha cole and weeknd on a clearly entitled article 'hip hop sales week'then why not just title it 'hip hop/rnb charts', such editorial trivial should be taking seriously HHDX. That Nicki re-packaging was a bad idea from the start. Congrats to keisha though and more fire to the kid Kendrick, once again I am confident that hip hop fans can appreciate and support real hip hop.

Both of you are fucking idiots.

    • Anonymous

*Raises hand*. Comeback season made me a drake fan. It took me a while to get used to him singing.

    • lol

if big and pac were alive you would prolly dog them like you do 50 cent and jayz. after a while there styles would have become stale and the more spot light and recognition they would inevitably receive the more you would wish to see them fall. pac woulda been like 50 (bi polar/ hypocrtical personality, and movie star) big woulda been like hov. both would have lost your respect as all mainstream artist eventually do. you will turn on artist such as k.dot just as fast as you turned on drake. I know all of you were claiming SFG the best mixtape of '08 but complain about his "mainstream debuts" because of too much singing? the sining is what got him big in the first place whether you see it that way or not. Raise your hand if you listened to or like "comeback season". look ma no hands....

  • Jacc

Damn! I tought Kendrick wouldn't see gold until next year, but it's really coming

    • X Facta

Smh @lol....You got it backwards. Buying the album means a person gives a fuck if their favorite artist sales or not. NOT buying the album means you DON'T. And yes, I bought my copy the day it dropped. K.Dot goin Gold(maybe plat) is not only big for me as a hip-hop fan, but also me as an artist.

    • lol

buy his album and maybe he will go gold next week. and don't front and say you did neither cause we all know you didn't. otherwise you wouldn't care about his sales.

  • Anonymous

GKMC will probably be gold in a couple weeks

  • Anonymous

This says hip hop sales. Why the fuck is rihanna, ne yo, and keshia cole up there? dont even listen to the weeknd, i know he got alot of rnb tracks but idk if he a rapper either.

  • Trent

gang*; to clarify I am white.. And, my black friends put me onto Kendrick's Section.80; all the people round me saying "have you heard Kendrick Lamar?" black people. I have had to put other black and white friends alike onto Kendrick who all bought his CD. I was at a bar the other night with a juke-box and 3 mexican dudes basically played all of Kendricks new CD.. WTF do you know?

  • pitbulina

pitbull debuted with 64,000 his highest debut ever. congrats!

  • lol

You ppl kill me. k. dot is selling because of cali. period. I'm from philly and i got his and meek album the same day so i can tell without biased. meek album isnt very good. the tracks are everywhere and kdot prolly has the best album i've heard in a while but everytime i as ppl if they've heard it yet they ask "who?". ppl dont really know who he is over here, unless your a mixtape junky you wouldnt either. and the storm really hurt meek. noone bought the first week and then the reviews came out so ppl was like naw.

    • rljunior

to the guy above how old were you when 9/11 happened that you state it didn't put people out of their homes?

    • lol

i mean 40k more is a lot. if sells 40k more his first week, people might assume everyone buying it and then they brainwash themselves into buying it. kinda like how k.dot is. every one saw his numbers and was like oh everyone buying it so i may as well buy it. but i aint gonna hold you the hurricane was serious. 9/11 didnt put ppl out of house and home so i dont really agree with the reference.

    • Anonymous

You low key right about k. dot. I'm from chicago and had to put a couple niggas on k. dot. But i disagree about the meek mill. No the hurricane didnt hurt meek mill, meekmill wouldve sold what 40k more albums? lol. on 9/11 when fab dropped his album that nigga did good numbers. Meek wasnt goin to sell more than ross. ross>meek lyrically. beats dont matter cause all they beats by the same producers lol

  • Anonymous

if they gave rick ross a gold plaque for God Forgives, I Don't before he even sold 430K I dont see why Kendrick shouldn't have his plaque by next week!

  • Anonymous

Rihanna, Keyshia Cole, and Ne-Yo are considered HipHop or black people music?

  • Anonymous

2 chainz might end up goin plat his album is holding strong! and everybody sayin meek mill flopped how so? we all know the storm hurt his sales big time and he still is gonna prob beat nas album sales when he tops out but nas album is not a flop? these mmg haters kill me ymcmb is the only label selling more units than mmg and that is a fact ross album is gold with only one single yes one single and it wasent even a hit myself i think they need mad props for what they have been able to do!

    • Anonymous

the storm hurt his sales big time? LOL thats a cop out. his album sucked! the storm is over, why arent they buying it now????

  • Wow

The reason why artists like Meek Mill, Rick Ross, Brandy, Keyshia, etc don't sell is because white people don't buy their records. 98% of their sales come from black people...Artists like Rihanna or J Cole or Eminem or Kendrick Lamar are artists that white people will go out and support. The white kids of this era are very different from the ones of the last era... They're into alternative/hipster music or black artists that make "safe" music for them....They're very different from the white kids I went to school with in the 2000's who would buy DMX, and 50 Cent and edgier artists.

    • Anonymous

Its not because we are into hipster music... Kendrick Lamar and Eminem are FAR from it... its because the edgier artists SUCK right now.

    • HipHopPurist

@WOW I was using Tupac as a example. I see just as much as you accused me of not reading your comment, you did the same thing. No matter if its in this day and age or in the previous days. Nothing is new under the sun, but what stay consistent is history. Artist who are successful on a long term bases and sell are artist with diverse catalogs of music. Its only so long you can talk about gangsta and hood life on your records all the time. What you call artist like Jayz, Eminem, or T.I becoming "safe" i can just growing up and speaking on things that are relevant in their lives. Go back and look at the type of music those artist was putting out then and look at what is being put out now, its not the same. They're only offering one side of the coin. To use Rick ross as a example. How can i have a whole catalog of his music when it basically all sound the same. Better yet, i'm open to a debate about this subject because Hip hop is my passion. So tell me exactly what was black artist doing then that they cant do now? To be honest the norm in today hip hop climate is to talk about pushing keys, getting money, and getting women. Record companies are adivising no demanding artist to talk only about subject matter The 2chainz, rick ross, and meek mills are pushing. So for the ken dots, j coles, lupe fiasco to speak on more diverse topics is outside the normal and controversial against industry record norm. I do agree with the fact of a artist needing to be able to appeal to more than the black masses to sell, but that is with any genre of music. You dont think that white people are the only ones buying rock n roll and punk rock albums.

    • Wow

@ HipHopPurist I never said that, you're twisting my words around like a faggot. Blacks support all their artists, but whites don't support all of them. If they're too edgy or too "black" theny won't buy the record. Take Neyo for example...When he does Techno pop records he his records do decent sales (white people contribute)..When he does real, raw R&B music, he flops. (ONLY black people buy it) No shit white people bought 2Pac back then...Did you read my whole comment? I said they used to buy 50 Cent and DMX as well. I'm saying the white kids of today are different...2Pac WOULD NOT be able to sell and do what he did in the 90's, in this day and age. Black people can no longer do what they want in music and expect whites to buy it, they now how to appeal to what the nerdy white kids of today what...Sorry you don't agree, but it's the truth.

    • HipHopPurist

So in your view white people support artist and black people dont? That is a highly myopic and presumptuous viewpoint to take. But again that's your opinion and your entitled to it. Artist historically who have done well financially and artistically in the long run (not short term runs, hell Vanilla Ice sold records) your catalog has to be diverse and speaks to fans on a human level not just a race level. Yes hip hop is birth from black culture, yet show was rock n roll and jazz at one point. What I'm saying is that a artist like Tupac was far from being a "safe" artist yet he is embraced by those of many different background and gender. Why? because no matter who you are you can relate to his struggle even if you never been in that exact situation. How many people can relate to a Rick Ross exaggerating about pushing more keys than Griesela Blanco and know the real Noreiaga. Its good club music but the last time i check income on a average. Not many people can afford to live out those fantasies being boasted day in and day out on many of these flash pan artist. Not to discount the Rick Ross or a Meek Mills because at times i enjoy their music from time to time. But their catalog isnt strong to deserve fan support. Not saying someone else cant, but i just cant. Die-hard fans take time to build and i dont really thing their concern with getting those type of fans but more or less putting out a single that is going to create a buzz and generate show money revenue. To each its own but to say Rick Ross and Meek are too hard for those other than blacks to support is laughable.

    • Anonymous

White people buy more albums than blacks, and women buy more albums than men.

    • Trent

How would you feel if I said that black people are only into sagging their pants, wearing white tees/jerseys, and ganging bangin? That's one fucking racial stereotype; go kill yourself to rid this world of your man-fearing, ignorant, racist bigotry.. People like you keep racism relevant.

    • Vern

Although I agree with you to an extend. You can't put it all on white people. Kendrick and Cole for example been building for years now. And slowly they picked up more n more fans along the way, myself included. People that been ride or die with you for years now, been waiting for that 1 moment to show that support and get heard as far as what music we DO want and DO support. In this case Kendrick is still fresh out of the underground and the spoiled underground fans showed support. Spoiled cause usually they lose interest in a dude that's finally coming up and its not ''their artist'' no more. And he's got the new fans that jumped on the bandwagon in the past year just cause he got co-signs from Dre n Em n aftermath n so on(mostly the white ppls u refer too), also due to the Recipe and Swimming Pools, also the type of ''safe'' music u refer too. Apart from that, Kendrick just straight up stayed true and just put out realass music from his heart.. Integrity helps too.. more n more people are finally getting tired of the fake recycled everyday garbage radiosongs..well I hope. PS. im black and also BOUGHT the album.. which I rarely do lol.

    • jayvon28

R&B music as a whole isnt selling like it was in the 90s and early 2000s. As far as a Meek Mills and Rick Ross, their music is sort of one-dimensional. Not saying they cant rap, but they're very limited as far as artist value. Their music sells the story of a drug dealer success and thats really it. Not to get nostalgic but any successful artist no matter the genre needs to be able to have a more diverse catalog of music

    • GoReadABook

wow is right you ignorant fuck....how you gonna just pidgeonhole the entire white race as supporting 'alternative/hipster' music and artists that make music that's 'safe' enough for us. Dickhead. how fuckin presumptuous do you have to be to make a claim like that? The audacity is insulting. The reason why Kendrick sold more than Ross and Meek is because he's by far a better artist than either of the other two. When MMG starts making good music instead of club bangers I will buy the fuckin album. That I didn't purchase it has nothing to do with how safe I feel listening to it. go deepthroat a chainsaw

  • Kaz

See what happens when you stay to your roots and stay true! U sell records and get certified. Kendrick's time is now!!! I am also cool that Keyshia Cole album had good sales as well. She was always and still is the truth.

    Kendrick goin' plat!

  • jayvon28

Kendrick still going strong....other artist take heed. hype will only get you so far. He's going gold, and if this rate continue I can see him going platinum some time next year.

    • Anonymous

I wouldnt go that far I'm guessing he's gonna top out at 700K Still a great performance tho, I find it amusing that a kid who I have never heard on the radio down here is outselling Meek Millz by twice as many records.

  • Vern

Oh and just releasing a CD a 2nd time n have it count as total sales is just plain fraud bs. Nicki don't deserve plat for that shit, wtf yo? whatever, industry right.. fraud ymcmb though.

  • Vern

Meanwhile.. Dumbass magazines crowning 2chainz man of the year.. and Ross 'Bawse of the year' which they just made up to promote him even more than he alrdy has been this year smdh. With all that damn promo a young cat with integrity still passed them by far in quality music(was expected ofc) AND sales! Yet still gets overlooked..(apart from landing the cover of the Source.. the same edition that crowns 2chainz man of the year though.. like wtf bruh?)

  • Vern

Dayumn, hard to believe that Kendrick outsold Rihanna as far as 1st week sales go(240k vs 238k). N I'm happy to see the sales are still going strong and he bound to hit gold in a week or 2! Finally us fans have clearly spoken. Real people want real music, the jig is up!!!! Poor Meek though, not rly a fan but not hating either, thought he'd do better than this.
