Hip Hop Album Sales: The Week Ending 11/18/2012

9th Wonder & Buckshot close out a seven-year three-album series with a chart appearance, as The Weeknd's own "Trilogy" hits the Top 5, and Yelawolf & Travis Barker slang "Psycho White."

It was a week of transition on the charts, as several indie releases left the Top 200 for some new albums in stores. Canadian crooner The Weeknd scored a Top 5 debut with his first retail effort, Trilogy. At #4, the compilation from the 22 year-old's free releases features Drake and Juicy J, and adds to the new wave of talent at Universal Republic Records.

Travis Barker & Yelawolf's Psycho White EP slipped in the Top 50. This five-song effort is Yela's third Interscope Records release in as many years.

Lastly, the final of three releases between Buckshot & 9th Wonder squeezed into the Top 200 rankings in The Solution. The series of Brooklyn-Raleigh collaborative albums date back seven years to Chemistry. Strangely, 9th was on two November 13 albums, the second being his final release in a separate series with Murs, The Final Adventure.

The Weeknd Warrior

After appearing on singles by Drake ("Crew Love") and Wiz Khalifa ("Remember You"), The Weeknd officially broke through this month as a commercial artist. Via XO/Universal Republic, the Ontario native's Trilogy traced his free project roots and convinced over 85,000 that it was worth the purchase. The remastered versions were accompanied by three new songs.

Buckshot & 9th Wonder Found A Solution

In 2005, when Buckshot & 9th Wonder began working together, Little Brother only had one studio album in stores. Buckshot had previously only released one solo album, over five years prior. Throughout the last seven years, the pair forged a relationship that shaped the personnel and sound of both Duck Down Records, as well as the Justus League. In the years since, 9th and Khrysis have become go-to producers at the veteran indie label, including spearheading projects by Skyzoo and The Away Team.

The Solution, following 2008's The Formula, marks the final themed album in the series. Guests include Jamla Records' Rapsody, as well as Dyme-A-Duzin. This is Duck Down's third charting album in two months, following Sky's A Dream Deferred and Sean Price's Mic Tyson, which left the Top 200, following two weeks of ranking.

Hip Hop is not dead the fans don't support the artist by actually buying the album. You here these songs playing every where but no one bought them. They downloaded them because they are cheap poor excuses for fans.

  • mrnoluv

LOL!!! Look at those titles! NOT ONE IS PLATINUM! NOT ONE! HOW THE FUCK CAN YOU SAY HIM HOP ISN'T DEAD? IF YOU ARE 15-20 YEARS OLD, YOUR NATURAL REACTION IS TO ARGUE, BUT DAWG, NOT ONE ARTIST CAN GO PLATINUM? THE GENRE IS DEAD. NAS, SUCKS, MEEK MILL? WHO IS THIS GUY? LOOK AT THAT CHART! THIS PROVES HIP HOP IS DEAD.

But no we hear he was a prison guard for a yr when he was a kid so the next 10 years in his life are irrelevant. -_- The Albany State Degree before the CO gig, the Suave House deal then Slip and Slide records his time is well accounted for.

  • Anonymous

"But, at the same time, if he woulda came forward and just said what he rappin bout is strictly entertainment, that would be coo too" He shouldn't have to tell you what is already obvious to begin with. His label isn't investing in your opinion of his life.

  • YahBish

Big Ups to Travis Barker & Yelawolf for selling 11k without any promo. Sounds like a flop but it was on an independent label + it was an EP.

  • Anonymous

That should be a lesson to Def Jam. All the money they spent on Radio for that two ugly sticks and that's all he sold. Just imagine if that push was behind Kendrick. He would have already went Platinum.

  • Lawrence

Kendrick Lamar will go gold in about three more weeks. Yessir.

  • BIG C

Props to NAS for selling 300K+ units in this time frame....that's dam good for an artist that been in da game for a decade to move units like that... hate it or love

  • Anonymous

was let down by this 9th & Buckshot album! the production wasn't really that good. it was 2 short! 9th's instrumentals is better than the bullshit he's been producing lately! no guest appearances! i don't count Rapsody cuz she can't rap! she's horrible! everybody on Jamla is wack wit the exception of Big Remo! no duckdown features? i like Buckshot! i like the way he rhyme but he don't be talkin bout nothing! smh!

Damn I gotta cop dat Trilogy.

  • truth

michael trampe is a dirty looking motherfucker.. the guy doesn't know shit about marketting and everyone in the office hates him

  • blackboi

    meek disappointed the label man!!

  • dj nemesis

i think we shud change the standards to reach gold and platinum status...cuz that shits close to nonexistent right now

  • Brandon

Why do us black people say you real if you selling dope or you packing heat or whatever you negros seem to think is real. Rozay again was 19 at the time as a CO for 18 months, ..so what does that have to do with him being credible. If he sold a piece of crack that would make you happy? N*ggas forever will be ignorant! Hold up, a n*gga molest ur child, but I guess u want that same n*gga to roam the streets instead of being in prison. SIMPLETONS

    • Nuff said....

You obviously dont understand what bein real is. Bein real is bein you and stayin true to who u are as a man. Rick rozay fabricated his past point blank. He rappin bout shit that he nvr done and glorifying it. He's not talkin bout all sides of the game. He only talk about the lavish side of it while nvr really experiencing none of it. But, at the same time, if he woulda came forward and just said what he rappin bout is strictly entertainment, that would be coo too. But he not a real nigga. He lied about bein a co when he shouldn't have. He shoulda just kept it 100.

    • THEBURGH12

well he denied it then tried to start beef with two rappers to take heat off of him then admitted to it on the deeper than rap album which was less trap rap more lavish rap then came back and talked about the same fake shit he was exposed for. um....... that's fake to me

    • Anonymous

i seen an interview yesterday where he straight up denied that shit and proceeded to talk shit on trick daddy for 8 minutes for exposing his fake ass

    • Anonymous

Personally I couldn't care less that he was a PO, but I don't think people have a problem with Ross working, it's that he hid his background and pretended/pretends to be something he wasn't. I mean, look at the POS he has named himself after.

    • ^^

Co-sign the hiphop community is so ignorant and takes in what the media feeds them. Common sense tells you if a guy had a legit job at the age of 19 for a year. then starts his rap career at 29 THATS 10 YEARS OF NO EMPLOYMENT HISTORY HOW THE HELL WAS HE GETTING MONEY....... But no we hear he was a prison guard for a yr when he was a kid so the next 10 years in his life are irrelevant. -_-

2 Chainz STILL ripping the charts and moving mad units...Keep hating...Playaz Circle 4 Life!!!

  • Anonymous

The thing is nas still sounds the same as he ever did and has no diversity of styles. jayz rips it in a variety of styles to any beat and adds different twists to his rhymes. nas is trash and has never stepped up his game to be able to hang with anybody let alone jayz. Hence the reason he hasnt had a hit since 2006. nas will NEVER be on the charts again

    • Anonymous

Nas has conceptual diversity if you actually look at his albums. Jay been putting out the same dumbed down bullshit for the past decade

    • Anonymous

ur a fuckin retard who cares is nas is on the charts kill urself for implying only good artist sale big

  • Anonymous

Kendrick is about to out sell Meek and 2 Chainz and both them dudes got mad promotion from the mainstream media. Hahahaha! Kedrick Lamar killing yall niggas

  • Maann I Tell Ya..

It's a whole new day in music man.. to be honest hip hop is just not selling like that anymore. Sad but true. And these artist are probably never gonna see their royalty checks because non of these cats gonna reach a mil plus..

  • Anonymous

i could probably sell 2k albums in a week.

  • jayvon28

It was all good just a week ago. Funny how most ninjas on this board defend their artist with "#s sold" and radio play singles But when one artist who didnt have the same type of promotion and push like them sells more than them based on word of mouth and co-signs, # of sales dont factor in.. Yall ninjas i swear..smh

  • Anonymous

every week i bet you bum ass niggas ar elooking to hate on kendrick lol. too bad he still doing numbers huh?

  • wolfman

They need to stop polling these numbers -- it's old standard. How come it seems almost every indie artist sells between 2,000 - 4,000 copies their first week. Same damn people buying the albums in stores? What's that say about those people. Old ass CDs. It's a digital era. A standard for online sales would even be an upgrade over this method.

    • jerky

actually these numbers include digital (amazon, itunes, emusic etc...). The thing is it does not include mom and pop stores that do not report to soundscan, or cds sold on tour, or albums sold on the companies website.

  • Anonymous

haha 2Chainz loses to Kendrick next week in sales

  • Anonymous

Kendrick Lamar is winning, quit bitching about it.

  • YEBO

YOU ARE ALL MORONS CLAIMING KENDRICK HAVING THE BEST FIRST WEEK SALES OF THE YEAR, DID YOU FORGET ABOUT PINK FRIDAY: ROMAN RELOADED? AND BUCKSHOT JUST FLOPPED AS HELL, HE IS MAKING TRASH MUSIC AND THIS IS JUST ANOTHER PROOF.

  • EQ

someone kick these goof ass corny niggas off the planet that # shit and they arent on twitter. dont u losers know hash tagging shit here or anything other than twitter means absolutely nothing! in fact it means nothing on twitter too, its not cool, u look like a follow the masses type of buffoon

  • RC

It's hard as Hell to find physical copies of Duck Down albums!! The Solution was only available at two Best Buys in the entire county I live in. I had to go to a specialty store just to find The Final Adventure!!

  • Anonymous

damn the days of goin platinum is damn near over

  • Anonymous

didnt meek say he was gonna fuck around and go platinum first week?

  • jerryc

9th wonder really gts absolutely no credit. He's a great soul sampling producer...frankly, imo, ifyou put jay on any one of his beats it would be so much beter than whatwas on bprint 3 and shit

  • Anonymous

I like that Kendrick and Meek sell records and Ne-Yo doesn't. Shout out to 2Chainz too, I'm not a big fan of the nigga but he's kinda entertaining and more of a personality than a lot of niggas out now. And I thought Maclemore would move more units. My homeboy been hyped about him the whole summer and I thought he had a bigger following anyway. Feeling positive about Hip-Hop these days

  • Anonymous

    Congrats to Kendrick Lamar

  • richryne

truth be told, your a dumbass

  • Martin

and how many albums did yall bitter ass bum niggas sale?

    • Anonymous

I don't have to comment or "like" Hostess on Facebook because I ate a pack of cupcakes 8 months ago and my comment surely doesn't matter because they are still shutting down the company. This is flawed logic, especially when we're in a forum where you can't even prove people who comment actually are real consumers. Think next time before you type.

    • Anonymous

niggas and their emotions that last anon dude is an idiot. we are consumers, that what we do, we comment on products that are marketed to us. The last time I checked, people comment on financial website all the time. what the F are you talking about. i comment on that shit when i see people making stupid projections and see others marketing retarded shares of go no where companies. isn't that the purpose of the comment section of a blog site....correct me if i'm wrong....i swear y'all niggas are idiots and just type stuff without thinking

  • Fuck Everyone Of Y'all Khalid Muhammad 4 Life

"Kendrick Lamar is outselling Meeks and is about to outpace and pass 2Chaiz" You talk like the shit went platinum in a week lol. Shut up nigga, it ain't shit about it that you can be proud of; nigga had the biggest buzz since 50 and still wasn't able to sell proper units lmao

    • ETK

swimming pools barely got on the radio... his beat with drake don't get that much play and it's Drake we're talking about.. biggest buzz since 50 Cent? fuck outta here

    • Anonymous

for real. i hear meek mill on the radio all the time. never get to hear kendrick on the radio. stop haitn on gkmc that albums dope. he did not have a 50 cent type buzz. 50 was all over the radio. and kendricks and hes a far better lyricist and artist then meek mill. most meek mill shit sound the smae "ama ciroc boy slangiing cain fuck wit me you hear that pop noise got so much money and bitches bla bla bla bla bla"

    • Anonymous

why cant u just be happy for kendrick and stop trying to discredit his achievement by saying things like 'he had the biggest buzz since 50 cent'. you were probably in pre school when 50 came out so i dont think you really know how big he was

    • Anonymous

biggest buzz since 50, get outta here with that meek mill and 2chainz both seriously had a bigger buzz, major radio singles, big name features, big budget videos. kendrick wasnt even on mtvs hottest mc list like meek, ross, wale, big sean, meek and he did better numbers than all of them first week

  • FuKKK KKKendriKKK Lamar

SMH NO ONE is going gold!!! LMAO

    • jerky

ahh, yeah, hahahaha, right? they only get $70,000 for every 10,000 they sell. Hahahaha. They're suckers right? Only 200,000. hahaha. That's what? only... 1.4 million for them and more for the retailers. Oh, actually, that's a lot of money for rapping. hahaha. plus tour money. ha. and merchandise. ha. and... oh fuck it, selling 6500 units is more than most americans make in a year. So easy smart guys.

saigon killing the game hah hah fucking cornball get a warm wash rag brian and clean up those gangster nut backshots off the daughters you don't raise (what a surprise for a bum rapper)

  • jayvon28

So Kendrick Lamar is outselling Meeks and is about to outpace and pass 2Chaiz????? Who says hip hop is dead! Big ups to your boy Ken

    • Anonymous

kendrick only came out a month ago, 2chainz been out since august. kendrick will pass him next week forsure and he didnt have any lil wayne, nicki minaj or kanye west assisted singles

    • Anonymous

He should have already outsold 2 Chainz. That shows his buzz is dying while Chainz is everywhere. Shallow commercial music will always win out.

    • jorge

any man who answers with lol or lmao is suspect. he has no major singles and is outselling all the weak asss rappers. how did that happen? hmm

    • freshyboi

it just sold 34k but you think its "over dog" and not gonna sell anymore? i think he sold more this week than he did last week. he proved that people are on that lyrical shit by selling more first week than every major rapper who released an album this year. kendrick will have that gold record by christmas!

    • Anonymous

^ Keep dreamin lmao. That shit's OVER dog, look at the charts. No. 18; no way the shit's gonna move more units later. He can drop every cut on the album as a single: it won't change shit, cause people are not on that lyrical shit nowadays

    • jorge

Keep in mind this is w/o his next major singles being pushed, poetic justice, and biiitch dont kill my vibe. i think if they promote these singles this will continue to sell

    • Hiphophead9

lol, who woulda thought?? The way they play 2-chains all day long they still couldnt force him down our throats, we still chose hiphop!!! Glad i copped GKMC

    • tresdemayo

Nobody went gold in the first week since Drake, GKMC was the best first week for a rap record since Take Care, better than Rick Ross and Cruel Summer, that's a fact. If you don't like it, it's cool, but don't try to prove the album is not a success.

    • Anonymous

Hip Hop ain't dead, it just moved to the south. Kendrick ain't move no major units, so stop hyping it like he went gold in the first week.
