Kendrick Lamar triumphed this week with his major label debut good kid, m.A.A.d city, talking with a slew of media outlets about the album and looking to sell upwards of 200,000 copies his first week. Meanwhile, Shyne didn’t have nice things to say about the project, calling it and sparking a war of words with Game over the comment. French Montana also chopped it up with HipHopDX this week about his upcoming studio debut Excuse My French, discussing how he mixes music and business and detailing the features on his first album.

Kendrick Lamar Releases good kid, m.A.A.d city

After releasing his breakout project Section.80 last year, Kendrick Lamar has finally released his major label debut good kid, m.A.A.d city. As part of our 30 in 30, HipHopDX gave the album 4.5/5 stars, describing the project as “a group of songs equally potent individually and collectively, meeting the mainstream and rabid fans in the middle.” Praise has been widespread, with some likening the LP to Nas’ classic debut Illmatic, and the numbers are going to play out in his favor: GKMC is expected to move more than 200,000 copies in its first week. K. Dot also said that Dr. Dre, who contributes to a few cuts on the album including “Compton” and “The Recipe,” delayed Detox to work on the record.

Shyne Calls Kendrick Lamar’s good kid, m.A.A.d city “Trash,” Game & Kendrick Respond

Not everyone was feeling Kendrick Lamar’s debut good kid, m.A.A.d city. During an interview earlier this week, Shyne branded the album as “trash,” stating that he wasn’t feeling the beats on the LP but that K. Dot has “potential” and “talent.” Kendrick’s fellow Compton, California native Game came to his defense, giving an interview where he said that “whenever a shot is taken at Kendrick, I think that’s the pool I’ma dive in head-first, whether there is water there or not.” Po was quick to respond, calling Game “my little son” and stating that he shouldn’t have responded in a public fashion. Meanwhile, Kendrick took it all in stride, stating, “It’s really no response [to him]. I’m not a sensitive guy, so that’s his opinion. Can’t stop what the world thinks, so yeah, that’s him.”

French Montana Discusses His Upcoming Debut Excuse My French

French Montana chopped it up with HipHopDX this week, talking about everything from his approach to business to his upcoming solo debut Excuse My French. During the convo, he explained why he grabbed an eclectic group of features for his album including Lana Del Rey, M.I.A., Wiz Khalifa and The Weeknd. He also discussed the biggest misconception about his persona and career, stating that he’s in a good position as an artist. “I just feel like when you come from where I come from you’re always gonna be the underdog,” he said. “I feel like nobody expects you to do what you’re gonna do. So, when we do it it’s like you smacked them in the face.” Watch a clip of our video interview below.
