DJ Drama Addresses Criticism Of Lil Wayne's "Dedication 4"

DJ Drama also says that J. Cole originally contributed two verses to the tape.

After Lil Wayne released his latest mixtape Dedication 4 with DJ Drama, the Young Money rapper faced criticism from some members of the Hip Hop community. During an interview with Power 105's The Breakfast Club, Mr. Thanksgiving said that he didn't think it was "lackluster" and that he's facing criticism based on the evolution of the game.

"I thought it was good. It was lackluster? What was lackluster?" he said. "I feel like where Wayne is now is where Hov was in '06 and when Wayne came out in '06 or was on fire, people was like 'Hov is old and Wayne is new and the truth.' Now, people are saying Wayne is old and this guy and this guy is new and is the truth."

Drama said that DJ Scoob Doo was instrumental in picking the beats for the project, but that he connected Wayne and J. Cole for the track "Green Ranger." "Scoob Doo did a lot of the beat choices on there. Me and Cole talked and the 'Green Ranger' song happened through me. It almost didn't make it, because I emailed it over and theyw as like, did you send me something from J. Cole? I was like yeah, get that done."

He got not just one, but two Cole verses, but says that Jay-Z is the reason the second didn't end up on the tape. "He actually did another one. He gave me one on a Wu-Tang 'It's Yourz' beat and played it for Jay-Z and Jay was like nah, hold that. So that verse I have on my computer but he's probably going to use that for his album. But I wasn't in Miami a lot for this project, I did send him over a lot of beats and everything. But I think Dedication 4 was dope. Truth be told, when Dedication 3 came out, a lot of peopele dissed that, 'There are too many other artists on there' and they wound up being Nicki Minaj, Drake and Tyga."

What is he trying to do to the people/image of a "rapper, hustler" in the industry...Is he trying to soften the way people see a black man or is this some kind of corporate america consipiracy of bringing down the media image of the black man. "He relied on a lot of people to get to those billboard numbers" More like the other way around. They relied on Wayne to make whatever song he jumped on a hit.

What do you expect, how are fans supposed to support and respect a guy who claims and glorifys gang life but never lived that life, kissing men on the lips, wears womans pants, wears lime green uggs and a guitar when there isnt even a guitar in the song, lol, he paid gillie da kid to teach him how to rap, the list just goes on and this nigga aint rappin bout shit anymore either, so wtf do u expect.

What i don't get is why does it have to be blind hatrid. im a diehard weezy fan and i am the first to admit he has more head scratching moments than any other superstar rapper in the game. So does Josh Hamilton or Ben Rothlesburger, Point being..Mistakes do not define lack of greatness, but an extreme work ethic and a knack for public relations, self-worth, and knowing exactly what to do does create greatness. All those D4 push backs? Hype. He will forever remain in this game until HE decides to leave it. Single handedly revived a label that no one gave 2 fucks bout. Now that label has x amount of awards, vmas, grammys, etc.... YMCMB.

Its not hate to say this mixtape was garbage. Not everyone has to like Wayne. He is not as creative as he was before point blank. And as far as the Tupac comments, no credible source ever said Pac was raped in prison, the media put that story out. Yes pac went to a performing arts highschool for a couple yrs where he learned different types of dance. So what!!!! I know thug n!gga who back in the day as kids listen to NEW Kids on THE Block, now as adults they in the streets. Your childhood does not always dictate your future!

    • Westsidecali

Hell nah...u absolutely right..not everybody suppose to like anybody..it's the music industry..everybody has there own preference..niggaz like story telling, punch lines, metaphors, underground..whatever float ya boat is your preference...I'm talking bout these wack niggaz I call haters, that say "oh you like Wayne, you a bitch, you gay" c'mon man..we can't vouch for none of these niggaz..they're entertainers.you listen or you don't..lot of rappers I personally don't fuck what, so I just don't check for they shit or click on they shit..but I'll be damn I click on everything wit they name on it, tryna knock another man hustle, or how he feeding his family

  • YESSIR

people say that pac got raped in prison and had a boyfriend in drama school. google "2pac and Eskiah." 2pac was also used to strip and hump blow up dolls on stage yet yall have the nerve to call guys like game gay for allegedly being a male stripper and having a tongue ring. even though pac was a documented stripper and had a nose ring. 2pac also supported queen latfifah at a gay pride concert. if a rapper like wayne or kanye did that today you guys would be all over them for it and hate mongering. yet Pac is guilty of the same behavior. and victim of the same types of rumors. 2pac was also a documented ballerina. The point is you n*ggas live in glass houses and habitually throw stones at today's rappers for doing the EXACT same shit that pac and biggie did! Biggie rapped about raping jesus, fukin men in the ass, and sucking his girl's dad's dick yet you n*ggas say NOTHING! but let kanye where leather and he's a faggot!? You fuking hypocrites!

  • Westsidecali

Lot of u niggaz is bitches... Sitting up here hatin on that man weezy like that. It's music, you either slap it or you don't.. Niggaz sittin up here calling niggaz names and shit because who they listen to. In my opinion Wayne, just got lazy..the effort ain't there no more..but look at his sales, niggaz still eating that shit up.. And to say he been weak, you don't really mean that..you can't, longevity alone can answer that question. The problem is nobody really making nobody work no more in the music industry. Everybody biting the same flow, and everybody sound water down, everybody..same niggaz hatin on Wayne, will turn around and say mmg or wiz hot..all that shit weak.. Success come from hard work, not hatin..remember that

    • Kirk712

It's the truth. Its easy for everyone to hate on Wayne but u try making 100k songs and appealing to everyone. No one can touch his collection, no one. Wayne wont get the respect he deserves until after hes dead and his unreleased material is released. People forget how many bangers Wayne put out and continues to put out

Wayne had a nice run from Tha Carter 2 to the tape "Georgia Bush" was on to his "Hollywood Divorce" appearance - that whole timeline. He had content. He had context. He had creativity. He had metaphors. He was hungry. Then he started dropping a bunch of lazy bars and directionless full lengths. Tha Carter 3 was the beginning of the end. Since then it's been various versions of "Gonorrhea"

  • Ricky Rozay

most of these rappers aint real niggas. Word, Nas bankrupt never was a drug runner, Lil Wayne aint no blood, Jeezy aint no BMF, 50 a snitch, Game a stripper, 2pac was gay. Like some people have said in this comment section, Lil Wayne always spit wack shit. It went from terrible to fair to terrible again. Even the Lil Wayne fans back then had to admit he wasn't the best rapper alive What do NBA player get for improving their game? Not MVPs, Most Improved Player. Hell, even T.I. before his KING album and after it, he spits better than 06 Wayne. 06 Wayne isn't even top 10.

Drama has to say what he has to say.... Did any of Wayne's bars on Dedication 4 even make you think twice... J. Cole did have the best verse on the tape and not because he is new.... it was just better than Wayne's throwaway bars. I even felt like Cole's flow was an old Wayne flow for the most part. The sad part is Wayne actually sounded like he was trying. I never bought into the ghostwriter ordeal but whoever was writing those rhymes on D4, whether it was Wayne or somebody else..... They sucked plan and simple.

"I feel like where Wayne is now is where Hov was in '06 and when Wayne came out in '06 or was on fire..." Mr. Drama, your arguement is invalid. This implies Jay fell off at some point which is not the case. "people was like Hov is old and Wayne is new and the truth." This is true, Jay was old in 2006. He was 36 compared to Wayne (24) but all the same Wayne was only catchy...not the truth. If he was the truth he'd still have a solid following. He doesn't. Jay always has and always will. Wayne should have called it 'The Best Rapper Alive (Right Now)', would've been more accurate. There is a fundamental difference between being the 'Truth' and catchy. People don't get bored with the truth. For example, Talib Kweli, just dropped Attack The Block. A mixtape, DX deemed album worthy because it proved Talib's versatility. He's been active since '95 and is still relevant today. When you're only crutch is being catcy you fall off. You get repetitive and that gets boring fast, happened to Wiz too. When all you do is talk about the same stuff release after release it's no mystery that your audience will forget you for some new artist on the rise. Wayne's last solid effort was No Ceilings. Everything since has been mediocre at best. Jay has always been solid whether you're listening to, now a classic, Reasonable Doubt or last year's Watch The Throne. Hopefully, for Wayne's sake, I'm Not A Human Being 2 is better than it's predecessor. If not, he's not only solidifying that he's still not a human being but that he's probably not a rapper anymore either. Just put in the effort, Weezy. If you really are the best rapper alive prove it. That being said, I can't wait for all you YMCMB noobs, with your intentionally bad grammer and spelling (as if that makes you 'hard') to hate on me for this.

ya'll must not be listenin or understand what mixtapes are. Wayne goes in on every beat. he wasnt supposed to make songs wit subject matter on a mixtape. if he does great. that was never his style anyway. his style always stayed the same and u gotta appreciate that. like all the greats scarface, nas, jay, snoop, u know what you're getting from them and the only thing that changes is the beats and how they deliver it to you. yeah wayne talks about fuckin 2 bitches all the time but he gives you so many different ways to tell you he's fuckin 2 bitches. no this isnt supposed to change your life. but ridin in the car, cleanin the house, vibin at work, Dedication 4 is the shit. ya need to listen again the nigga is snappin. He stepped his game up with a few Redman style punchlines. and the " I got a black bitch and red bitch I call them hoes Aunt Vivian" line is genius. People just fid a reason to hate

    • Gstar

lil wayne sucks now...he is all like "I don't know what more I can say" Well, Wayne, we don't expect you to talk about anything you never had first-hand experience with. However, we know you eat ass, so all your songs will be about that now. There is a war happening right now between bitch niggas and real niggas.

    • anon

listen to his old mixtapes dumbass, he goes in hard. he was hungry back then, now not so much.

    • Mylie

i stoped reading once you tryed to make wayne out to be one of the greats. stop trying to make him out to be a elite MC when wayne is nothing more then a mediocre talent that shouldn't matter in this generation. stop it its digusting. hes a below tier rapper bottom line.

  • Industry Advocate

Being real and very unbiased...that Dedication 4 was wack! Better than Carter 4, but wack! Using Drama's example: When Jay came with Kingdom Come, it was his first album in 4 years at the time, and he was rusty. Wayne been spittin' wack shit since Carter 3 run ended. I haven't heard a consistent Wayne since Carter 3. He raps like he doesn't care. Someone said it's the same Wayne, I was listening to Dr. Carter this past weekend in a shoe store and that was Genius as well as some other things he did leading up to that. Even No Ceilings showed he still had it. Since he's been out of jail, that cat has been garbage. That's truth and can be backed up.

    • Mylie

he was ALWAYS spittng wack shit even before C3. so stop with this he used to amazing rapper or whatver bullshit. he was always never really good.

  • You hear that? That's a kid screaming when Wayne appears wearing a skater helmet...

I love how after something flops they wanna say well I wasn't in the studio with Wayne and I just e-mailed him the beats etc...That mixtape is garbage and so is Wayne..retire already and spare the world your bullshit music..and take your lame camp with you..

DEDICATION IS ONE OF THE BIGGEST MOMENTS THIS YEAR, CLASSIC MIXTAPE... SOMETHING LIKE ILLMATIC OF MIXTAPES, RESPECT THAT. THESE FUCKBOYS ARE CONSTANTLY HATING ON WAYNE AND THEY HAVE TRASH ARTISTS LIKE FLOPHOUSE OR KENDICK IN THEIR PLAYLISTS. DJ DRAMA IS THE SECOND BEST DJ OF ALL TIME (FIRST IS KHALED) AND HE IS RIGHT ABOUT THE GAME AND WEEZY'S MIXTAPE. WAYNE'S IMPACT IN OUR CULTURE IS VERY BIG, HE IS LEGENDARY RAPPER, FASHION ICON AND HE RECORDED THE BEST ROCK ALBUM OF ALL TIME - REBIRTH (YES, MAYBE JAPANESE CARTOON WITH LUPE WILL HAVE BETTER ROCK ALBUM SOMEDAY). REBIRTH WAS WAYNE'S WORST ALBUM BUT IS STILL BETTER THAN AC/DC, QUEEN, LED ZEPPELIN, PINK FLOYD AND GREEN DAY DISCOGRAPHY ALL PUT TOGETHER.

  • Anonymous

Drama is right people are just tired of Wayne. Wayne still has the same subject matter he did 5 years ago. Its just that 5 years ago it wasn't stale. That's the truth.

  • Anonymous

fuck wayne and fuck dj drama , the only good think wayne ever dropped was carter 2 and even that could have been ghostwritten

  • Jermaine

Okay this topic is simple. I feel like wayne fell off after Tha Carter 3. Up until that point he had some hit and miss retail cd's. I hated Carter 1 but thought Carter 2 was classic. Carter 3 was also a good album. Now I never fucked with Dedications because I was never a huge fan of hearing wayne rapping over other people's instrumentals. Fast forward to the present time. I stopped fucking with Wayne because I just don't think he has the ability to make a classic. When was the last time Wayne got in the studio with let's say a Kanye, Pharell, Timberland, etc to make some classic shit. It seems like he's content on just getting beats in his e-mail. I just think he makes songs and picks what he feels are good enough to put on an album with no real direction. That's why to me Carter 4 was so trash. Yeah it sold but the reviews where average. I think he has peaked. Also his concepts don't grab my attention. When you start naming all of your cd's part 1,2 ,3,4,5, and 10 it becomes redundant real fast.He needs to come up with some new titles for his cd. He will probably make a Carter pt.9 at some point. lol I didn't even download Dedication 4 because I knew for a fact it was just going to be him over instrumentals. That shit get old at some point.

Then he has all this negativity towards dark skin, reps lighter skinnned girls like they are going out of style, and is dating a white girl. It's all fake, no authenticity...It just shows that he was never real to begin with. A little discouraging...He made me stop listening to commercial rap

ALL DRAMA CARES ABOUT IS THE MONEY WAYNE GAVE HIM TO TALK OVER SOME TRACKS

  • Anonymous

Drama doesn't actually know what he's talking about.

  • Anonymous

I dont even listen to wayne but from an outsiders point of view, anytime an artist has been big long enough people start looking for reasons to nit pick and complain about it. I never liked wayne, but the songs I have heard, it doesn't sound to me like he sucks any more now then he did all along. People are just tired of seeing him on top so there jumping on the "He use to be better, bring back the old blah blah blah" that they say about everybody after watching them win too many times

    • Gstar

The hate wayne is receiving should not be described as something that happens to people who are winning. If you were a big fan and listened to wayne prior to carter 3 then you would understand the critism he is receiving now... Wayne feels that he is above everyone and his skills are superior. That's what true money does. You become successful and your true colors radiates. He wreaks of ignorance, arrogance, and confusion. All he talks about and eludes to now is fucking and sucking. He was never this lazy and one-dimensional. To all the Wayne fans, This dude does not give 2 shits about you,cuz he has switched and said a big fuck you to all. I think Drama knew this and did this project on purpose.

    • Anonymous

word, I agree with that. I never liked Wayne either and I think D4 is weak but not that much weaker than some of his older material. People are just getting tired of him.

don't hide your stanism behind words like "I never liked wayne" to legit lil wayne's so called talent man be proud and say it loud that your a stan of him instead of pretending you dont like him that much but in a certain way you appreciate his works. otherwise it can be seen as a bitch move since you try to make it look like the average hip-hop listener dig this lil wayne shit

  • DJ Game

in all fairness, Dedication 3 was wack too. so what that it was Drake, Tyga, and Nicki? Nicki is garbage. straight TRASH! Tyga had a great mainstream debut for what it was. and regardless how big of a cornball Drake is, he makes good music. But Dedication 3 was still weak. I won't even talk about Dedication 4 because that mixtape was such trash that I didn't even bother downloading it after the first listen. Beside the SQ series, Wayne had quality material on Dedication 1 and 2, the latter of which was my favorite from him. No Ceilings was really good and then I'm Sorry For The Wait came out and that was utter trash as well. It's a hit or miss with him lately. But lately its just been a miss. Oh well.

    • Anonymous

DJ Drama is the host of the series and of course won't agree with the criticism because its a knock on his craft.I think there are 2 kinds of rappers one who is more personal and the lyrics reflect that and you get an insight on their life. The other type of rapper projects an image and projects that in his songs. Nothing wrong with either approach. The fact that Hov is still relevant because we got to listen to the "Reasonable Doubt" Jay and grow with him thru the years all thru his music which included the stabbing, Rocafella breakup, relationships etc. With Wayne he is more of an image type of rapper Post Cash Money days he started off with the mixtapes and then did the Carter I which I liked even though it may have been ghostwritten by Gillie Da Kid. He's been rapping since he was 10 or so and now hes 30 from his various mixtapes havent really had any subject matter. D4 mostly promoted TruckFit, Fellatio(Oral Sex) and more sex like Charlamagne stated. The flow was lazy and lackluster and the subject matter wasnt there. Everyone has there own opinions but I dont think you can compare Weezy to Jay music wise just because of the quality of music not the quantity of music....
