Hip Hop Album Sales: The Week Ending 9/9/2012

Lecrae defies "Gravity" with his sixth solo album nearly taking the #1 spot. Slaughterhouse's "welcome to: Our House" falls over 20 spots, and Rihanna is chasing another platinum plaque.

A new independent Hip Hop album cracked the Top 3 of the charts this week. Houston, Texas Christian Hip Hop star Lecrae defied Gravity with his sixth solo album. The Reach Records release was within 25,000 units sold of the #1 spot. Gravity scanned more than 72,000 units in its first week, making this release the best first-week indie outing in Hip Hop thus far in 2012.

Rihanna's 2011 album, Talk That Talk is at the million mark, after the Def Jam Pop star's MTV Video Music Awards performance, giving her release a spike to #60. Slaughterhouse, the chart darlings of last week, fell 21 spots (from #2 to #23) with their first major label album (and second overall), welcome to: Our House.

Lecrae's Gravity Is The Rapper's Highest Charting Appearance To Date

Following last year's #15 debut of Rehab: The Overdose, Lecrae outdid himself with Gravity. The Reach Records star took assistance from Big K.R.I.T., DJ Khalil and Novel on his sixth album. With four singles - most recently "Mayday," the extensive marketing for Gravity is a benchmark for Lecrae, his label and Christian Hip Hop. Earlier this year, Lecrae released his mixtape, Church Clothes, with Don Cannon, following a South By Southwest performance.

Slaughterhouse's welcome to: Our House Goes From #2 To #23 In One Week

Shady Records lyricist collective Slaughterhouse fell 21 places in their second week at retail. welcome to: Our House fell 21 places, as the quartet of Joe Budden, Crooked I, Royce Da 5'9 and Joell Ortiz did some performances, including in Ortiz' hometown of Brooklyn, New York last week. Crooked I expressed his frustrations with corporate radio last week, an element that may have hindered the acclaimed artists' group sales.

Tupac never respected Dre and never wanted to be friends with him. He just respected his production skills. Remember his verse from California Love alluding to Dre's homosexuality? "Say what you say but give me that bomb beat from Dre" means that even though Dre is gay, I just want his beats...lol

    • Anonymous

that make him fake cause he spent all that time with him acting like his friend and working with him and doing interviews together (check youtube) and then the next day dre is gay and been ga, yet you were his buddy and hanging out with him all this time, what does that say about you. SMH

Im trying get yall to see the large picture rick ross aint no gangsta he just a lost nigga

Its stupid that SH wants to compromise and make mainstream tracks when the radio wont even play those mainstream tracks. Your better off just making what the fuck you want and sticking to what your fans want if the radio is not going to play your shit anyways.

Damn fool. You are way off on every single prediction. Do me a favor. Go to your bathroom open up the cabninet and take all the pills you can find. Kill yourself.

    • YEBO

YOU ARE SO DUMB, I LIKE KANYE'S STUFF BUT SERIOUSLY? HE WON'T EVER SELL 800K-ONE MILLION COPIES IN ITS FIRST WEEK, LAST TIME HE SOLD OVER 496K AS A SOLO ARTIST AND OVER 300K WITH THAT THRONE ALBUM. AND BLUEPRINT 3 DIDN'T EVEN GO GOLD IN ITS FIRST WEEK, TELL ME, HOW IT IS POSSIBLE NOWADAYS WHEN SALES ARE GETTIN' LOWER AND LOWER. CARTER 3 AND 4 SOLD AROUND THE MILLI IN ITS FIRST WEEK AND I SEE HIS NEW ALBUM LIKE 300K IN ITS FIRST WEEK AT MOST. I AM NOT A HUMAN BEING SERIES DOES NOT HAVE THAT MUCH PROMO, SO IT WON'T TOP LAST TWO CARTERS. I DON'T GIVE A FUCK ABOUT SALES EITHER, THE NEXT WEEZY ALBUM WILL BE CLASSIC EVEN WITHOUT GOLDEN PLAQUE.

    • Anonymous

carter 3 sold a million copies in it's first week and carter 4 sold 950,000 plus, so those numbers are possible.

what kind of a world do we live in?..2 chainz outsells slaughterhouse and does nearly as much as nas? there really isn't any hope..

  • BLVCK

HU DA FUKK DIS NIKKA LECRAE HE FINNA SELL MO ALBUMZ DEN YA HERO NAS HAHAHAHA

  • MacRob

LoL Yellawolf sell more then slaughterhouse?.... Crooked I and Joel Ortiz need to branch off.... how is nas not #1??? wtf his albumn is easily the best on this fuckin list.... crazy shit

    • Anonymous

      alright gotcha.

    • Anonymous

I didnt say it was the best album on the list, the original poster said the nas album was best on the list. I could care less about sales because sales dont equate to quality. Soulja boys first album went platinum. Doesnt mean it was good. Phontes album didnt even hit 300k. Doesnt mean it was bad. Thats all i was saying

    • Anonymous

^^^ couple things : 1. Its not the best album on the list 2. Its not an overlooked album like Illmatic and Reasonable Doubt ... it just sucks. You are in denial.

    • Anonymous

do you not understand what a comparison is? Illmatic and Reasonable doubt were brought up to enforce the fact that just because it didnt sell a lot doesnt mean the album isnt good. Skylar Grey and Ceelo Green. Ok. Skylar has 1 number one under her belt. That doesnt mean shes automatically gonna make your song a hit. Same with Cee lo. Those two have been on number 1 songs but they arent huge. If either one of them dropped an album this year, you can bet its not gonna do a crazy amount of numbers. The original comment said the album was easily the best on the list. Well the best doesnt always sell the most, which going back to the first point as to why i brought up illmatic and reasonable doubt. Now if you cant comprehend that then im done typing

    • Anonymous

^^^ They had fucking Skylar Grey and Ceelo Green, just because the singles failed doesn't mean they didn't try to conform and get radio hits. and I'm not even gonna address the fact that you brought up Illmatic and Reasonable Doubt on a Slaughterhouse article, never do that again.

    • Anonymous

sales dont mean anything. Gotta remember this album wasnt promoted throughout the media like majority of the albums on this list. Not a whole lot of huge features. no number one single etc etc. Also just keep in mind Illmatic sold less than 59k its first week Reasonable Doubt sold 90k and both are considered classics

Can we interview 50 Cent about his album sales vs Rick Ross' album sales? Please...? And why does the world love 2Chainz so much for him to be outselling Nas? Nas album was so raw. And DJ Khaled needs to give his mixtapes out for free...he's got to be losing money with those releases...

    • Anonymous

2Chainz hasn't out sold Nas yet but to answer your question strip club, money money money music is embraced by the masses.

  • RZA

yall still making excuses for them SH niggas ? move on, they tried to be mainstream and failed. Get off them niggas dicks and take heed to K.Dot and TDE.

  • Dana

I bet my pussy DMX won't sell more than 30 thousand.

  • Anonymous

slaughterhouse was only expected to sell 50,000-60,000 copies they obviously passed that and its only the second week so that pretty good and they only have 40,000 twitter follower that means all there follower bought the album

  • da1

Wow besides rihanna(who is R&B) aint nobody on this list even go gold yet. Plus it took rihanna a long ass time to go platinum. The industry is fucked. And don't blame people downlaoding music, if adele went diamond(or jus about)then people are still buying albums. You just need to make better music.

    • Anonymous

ludacris last album went gold bruh

    • Anonymous

this nigga said ludacris lol. gtfoh. when was the last time luda went gold letalone platinum

    • da1

To the second person who responded to me. You don't know what the hell you're talking about. Yeah YMCMB got a decent fanbase because at one time THEY MADE DECENT MUSIC!!! Now they're living off of Wayne's history and "fading" buzz. Drake may have some staying power as far as making albums, but beside wayne he only goes platinum which is't bad at all.Nikki minaj might of been just a fluke. What you got to say about Baby, Tyga, and that latin singer they got? They don't sale. Anyways people can still go even multi-platnum if they made music with the same potency and vigor they made back in the early 2000's or 90's. And to the last person that reponded.. Uhm yeah she did go diamond or atleast is close enough that it will happen sometime by the end o the year. She did 4mill like the first 5 months after her release. Which was pretty much two years ago.

    • Anonymous

adele didnt go diamond. She went 4mill, which still isnt bad. all sales are down but Hip hop sales are farther down because hip hop fans dont support their artists like other genres do. R&B artists like Maxwell and Sade can take 7 and 10year breaks and still still 300k and 500k first week because they have dedicated fan bases. bands like U2 are always gonna sell. Taylor Swift is always gonna sell. Why? because they have dedicated fan bases. Hip hop has a few jewels as far as sales are concerned. Drake, Wayne, Kanye, Jay, Eminem, Ludacris, and Nicki. But for the most part, outside of those that i mentioned, hip hop just isnt selling like it used to 10years ago. fact check it if you want to. Use eminem for example. 10 years ago Em was going diamond. a sales monster. Now, hes still a big seller but Recovery topped off at around 4million. The game has changed

    • SDK

      INTERNET KILLED SALES

    • ETK

uh no you idiot, Adele went diamond cause a bunch of white middle-aged adults bought that shit. Adele's CD catered to adults, teenagers, old people, fuckin everybody. YMCMB sells because people eat their shit up, Drake & Wayne got long-armed loyal fanbases and Nicki is the new female rapper on the block doing all sorts of crazy shit it isn't about "they should make better music". stop trying to sift the blame off yourself, actually save a bill of 10 bucks once in a while or you're as part of the problem as everyone else

Slaughterhouse flopped? what, because YOU expected they would sell over 100K? says WHO? your expectations aren't resolute with Interscope's, you idiots. I bet nobody in there expected much more than 100K, and I'm damn sure Eminem didn't exactly expect gold status. cause if they wanted to, they would've done lot more shit. They would've made a video with Skylar Grey/Eminem for Our House, they would've made a video for Park It Sideways, and they would've taken many more initiatives... pre-album promotion, and by that I mean more than going on freaking 106 & Park. You can tell when a label is pushing for an album to sell high, SH was just getting their foot in the door with this & clearly they were gonna take what they can get 75% of their fanbase prolly copped the CD illegally... and they KNEW that! listen to their On the House mixtape, they allude to fans pirating the music several times

    • Anonymous

@anonymous are you serious?? No one in their right mind expected slaughterhouse to go gold in their first week. NO ONE. When youre expecting an artist or a group to go gold, thats because there has been millions of marketing dollars spent. The artist has been performing on the late night shows, making media appearances, big time performances, magazine covers, radio interviews, big time features, number one songs on the radio on all the major stations. Slaughterhouse didnt do/have half of that. The industry knew they werent gonna break 100k first week. The only people that are acting surprised are the people that like to call everything a flop that doesnt sell 300k first week and everything that sells 500k they say were bought

    • Cudder

define the "whole fucking industry". seriously. stop talking for everyone moron, nowhere did it say SH should have sold anything huge, they've always been relatively underground & never been about the shit YMCMB is about

    • Anonymous

"75% of their fanbase prolly copped the CD illegally..." Yep, I got the album from Mediafire.

CHRISTIAN RAPPER OUTSELLING SLAUGHTERHOUSE TWO WEEKS NUMBERS JUST IN ONE WEEK AND DICKRIDERS STILL FIND EXCUSES FOR THEIR HUGE FLOP. REAL HIP HOP IN ITS ESSENCE IS REALLY SORRY FOR THESE FOUR CLOWNS EVEN CRACKING 10K COPIES. PEOPLE, DON'T BE SILLY AND DEAF DICKRIDERS, SUPPORT REAL HIP HOP, NOT THAT FLOPHOUSE GROUP.

    • candyman

u just said real hip hop right well thats what slaughter is just cause u dont understand there word play huh ??? there is no other great word smiths out there besides slaughter you clowns no one needs to defend them nor do they they dont care what they sell cause there tru to hip hop stop with the bs bro cause SH only niggas out there doing hip hop the way its supposed to be and if they reall really where trying to cash in and sell sell records then obv. the GOAT eminem would of maid it happen they stayed tru to there shit they even went to some commercial beats which we might add are better then any beats ur listening to LOLOL get over ur self niggas wayne ross drake all them clowns are garbage

    • jakefromstatefarm

Two Christian rappers. Who aren't that bad btw. So what if slaughterhouse suffers from a case of sophomore jinx. Every group/artists suffers setbacks.

  • ricklove

funk this , why aint I saling $0 album sales.

  • Anonymous

"the others have way more money than that fraud so who cares?" Put it this way. Ross has more money than Slaughterhouse. Not broke like Nas, and still relevant enough to make millions more. It's not about whether you should care, more like see the reality of the situation.

  • Anonymous

2 Chainz came ten times harder than Laughterhouse did. And they had Eminem backing them. Fucking embarassing.

I wonder who would win in a battle. 2 Chainz or Adam Sandberg? Reguardless of skill, theyre both hilaurious as fuck.

Does anybody else thing rick ross is pullin a birdman, buying his own shit. Theres no way rick ross weak ass should sell more than nas, ocean, trey and chainz. I know 2 chains will eventually pass him, but come on. There cant be that many people in the u.s. That would actually pay for a rick ross album. Radishes

    • quez

the #s come from album shipped not albums sold and the amount of album shipped depends on what the label expects the artist to sale y'all gotta get y'all facts right, also music is still making money it's only hip-hop thats really struggling like this and I blame the flaky ass fans y'all keep saying make better music, do yall really believe that bs yall typing smh

    • Anonymous

^^^giveaways arent counted as records sold. Soundscan doesnt count them in. Giveaways are tax write offs. If they were added in then it would mess a lot of the books up and there would be less money for the labels to get back

    • Anonymous

Labels still do it that's where the radio stations, magazines & websites get the "free giveaway" CDs from. There's a BIG ASS "GIVEAWAY" BOX on here and you STILL talking garbage. SMMFH

    • Anonymous

Ross money isnt long enough to pull that kind of scam. Besides his album has been out for two months. Still buying albums now would be pointless. Also buying albums does nothing for the artist. Especially seeing as how he only sold 200k+ his first week. Thats nothing remarkable. Its slightly higher than what he normally sells but still, we've all seen higher. Besides, the buying albums argument only comes up when its related to artists that people dont like. No one said anything about Gaga or Taylor Swift doing a million in a week. No one said anything about adele selling 300k several weeks in a row and then 100k a week for almost 3months in a row. No one ever said anything about Eminem when he sold 770k his first week. But since bloggers hate YMCMB when they put up big numbers, then it means that albums were bought lol

    • Anonymous

No rapper buys there own albums brah, stop with the conspiracies. Labels did that shit back in the late 90's, things are different now.

  • Anonymous

This nigga Ross is never gonna platinum. All his albums die at gold.

  • L Hook

Glad to see Lecrae finally get that top 5 spot. Maybe CHH will start getting radio play. Whether its bubble gum rap or "real" hip hop, none of it well sell. Hip hop fans DO NOT SUPPORT THEIR ARTISTS WITH MUSIC PURCHASES. I'm still trying to figure out how Adele has blown up so much while a Jill Scott who has a similar voice, style (sometimes) wouldn't make a scratch on the charts.........

  • Sales Don't Matter

Wale made $5 million dollars and didn't even need to go gold. Just imagine how much profit Rick Ross made, because he the C.E.O.

    • dopeness

since when is wale not a headliner dude been gettin 40 to 60k a show... only time he dosen't headline is when hes with some bs rnb act

    • Anonymous

sales don't matter, but you shouldn't be studying other rappers pockets either.

    • Big Dan

I am sure Wale is paid, he is one of those hustling rappers that quietly make their money touring and not every artist has to make 10 mil a year, but 5 million! I would gladly bet all my 28 bucks in the bank he did not make that much. He is not a headliner, so he is not doing stadium tours and you can not make that much getting paid to do club, small venue tours. So even if you read somewhere that Wale tours made 5 million, you have to realize that's tickets sold. Promoter has to be paid, employees have to be paid etc. So unless he organizes his own tours, he still has to pay people, how much the tour grosses is not a number you focus on.

  • Jonathan Skinner

Lecrae sells 72,000 units with little to no radio play, glory be to God!

  • Anonymous

    • Anonymous

cuz Laughterhouse are fucking garbage with no reason to exist except mutual desperation and Eminem's misplaced guilt trip? at least Yelawolf flopped solo; these fucking bums have a four-way split... ... though in their case, splitting the LOSSES four ways (and you better believe this shit lost money for Interscope) is kind of an advantage. Eat up Joell you fat fuck!!

  • D.C

How can anyone say Frank Ocean flopped? He clearly exceeded expectations and is still blowing up. He only recently became the hot topic of music and his record sales prove that. Now Rick Ross' sales are something to worry about. Or cheer about if you don't like him

  • YOUNG JAZZLE

Rick Ross has done something amazing. Which is make more money than multi platinum artists without even having to go gold. That's called "A Big Money Bag Drop" deal.

  • Anonymous

Country and Rock sell better than R&B and hip hop because they don't try to crossover on purpose, they stay true to the music they like to make eg.country singers make actual love songs not fuck music. While our genres keep trying to crossover on purpose, and it's not organic, people see thru it and obviously they're not buying it figuratively or literally. Moral of the story is, rappers need to spit as hard as they actually want to, and singers need to kill every note and stop wasting pipes on hooks because obviously is not working on the labels bottom line.

    • Anonymous

your argument makes no sense. so no rock music is about sex money and drugs? lol do you even listen to rock or country? stop sucking the white man's dick and just say you hate current black music. but don't start making flawed and irrelevant arguments. sales are low in every genre compared to 10 years ago, not just urban music. what do you even mean by crossing over.the best selling records arent the ones where a rapper spit 60 bars over a beat box beat. no diss im just saying your argument is just so illogical. and hip hop is actually considered the most influential genre of music. just listen to how many pop singers get rappers on their songs, how many white kids in the burbs base their lives off rap. just look at how taylor, the biggest country singer in the world, bought out a rapper every night at her show and even performed rap songs. hell, the best selling musician of the last decade is a rapper. again your argument sounds 10% truth and 90% bitterness.

    • Anonymous

And I think R&B artists should stop trying to sound Hip Hop and stick to R&B. Start making some classy motown type of shit again.

    • Anonymous

It's a bunch of dumbasses doing the same thing over and over then failing, but expecting a different result each time. They could sell like this off the trunk.

    • andre the giant

well said. If the selling out type of music is not even selling then they might as well just make real hip hop and RnB with soul.

    • coolmanhew

You got it wrong dawg, EM is gonna keep Slaughterhouse and Yelawolf or at least give them one more album and then a shady album, because so many people buy em's albums that he can cover them both probably 3x over, the question is how long will he keep them, if they don't sstart takin over someone gonna take their places, its buissness man

    • Bid Dan

How is Royce going to distance himself. He is actually the biggest disappointment in the group career wise. he was hoping to ride em's coat tails back when it would have matter, Em was too slow on the uptake, then he fell out with Em and was going to kill him thinking he was hot enough to do it on his own, flopped. He came crawling back to Em and he just got confirmation, nail on the coffin that he will never move units despite his skills. They should not take it to heart. The industry sucks. Go independent. Put out your albums every 8 months and 150k units moved plus touring means you are living very well. If they all sit down and keep waiting for their platinum moment they will go broke and not have anything in their middle and old age.

  • HAMMER DANCER

When you make an analysis, you have to factor everything in. Ross' "poor" numbers are due to the state of the industry. Yes, there are three artists (well maybe a few more) that can come out at anytime and outsell him 6 to one, but you do have to say he is the biggest rapper out now. I don't mean in terms of sales, just as far as who is making the most noise. If Em does not have an album out, no one is talking about him, Jay-Z has moved on so to speak and is more of a mogul now and Wayne's buzz is not as hot as it was a couple years ago. A new album might change that and yes he will do nice numbers, but his hotness factor is down a couple notches. And really, considering that no one is buying albums anymore from this week's numbers, I question whether Em and Wayne's numbers are factual. Interscope and Cash money HAVE to be buying albums.

He's not a star. Somebody lied. He's got a chopper in the car. UGH!

I find it amusing that Lecrae did more first week than guys like Big Krit or Slaughterhouse. Christian fans support their artists but hip hop fans don't support their "real hip hop" artists.

  • Anonymous

the trend is the really dope albums dont move units but its ok i have a banging as collection

  • Cudder

    • Anonymous

^^^^^ Wow. This pseudo-intellectual nigga is stupid.

    • Big Dan

I think you are wrong. First off, Skylar might have popped up on Dre and Em projects, but who the hell is she? She does not have an album out. They get her b/c they like her voice, not because she is going to help them achieve cross over, not that those two need it. so no, Slaughterhouse would not have run to her. And yes, it is about numbers. No, no one thought they would have come out and gone platinum, that would have given everyone a pleasant shock, but one, they will not see a dime off their album. Sure they got an advance, probably not that much anyway, but they just 2-3 years working for free. Second, while you have touring to fall back on, when you only sell 100,000 copies, how many people do you think will show up at your concerts, bootleggers of your album included? Em was not putting up the check, Interscope was and its not like these are Em's boys that he grew up with, Royce aside. When you don't move units, you get dropped.

    • ^

You're an idiot. Nothing you said was true.

    • bum world

hey idiot. the album was hyped for over a year. blogs, radio, tv, concerts with eminem. cover with eminem in XXL, their own cipher at the BET awards. singles with cee-lo and swizz beatz. eminem exec produced the album. they had every shot and missed the mark. again. this is what these guys do. they fail on the biggest stage. they are veteran losers in the game. seasoned bums. spin this. it's all about record sales with these guys. if it wasn't, the album wouldn't have featured who it featured and sounded the way it sounded. they failed. FLOP. i'm sure they're happy with the numbers. i'm sure they know the next move. i'm sure they feel secure on SHADY records.

    • Anonymous

GTFOH... Jimmy Iovine gave 'em Cee Lo... They were dancing with Swizz... They fucking TRIED everything!!! Three (3) dogshit singles all flopped... How much money is Interscope supposed to piss away because Em has guilt that Proof that killed? Joell was giving handjobs to Japanese tourists in the hotel room, what else was left?!?! LAUGHTERHOUSE!!!

    • You's a Fool

So according to your statement...they put alot of work in the album just so they could fail....hahahaha dumb prick

    • Anonymous

I agree, but some fans were saying it was gonna sell 300,000 copies

  • Anonymous

i'm sure slaughterhouse was thinking gold would be cool. they aren't gonna even see 100,000. that's with a cee-lo green vid and eminem behind them. such losers. and the album sucked. losers. a product that was made to sell that doesn't sell is called a failure. sold their souls and flopped.

    • Anonymous

wigga please!! Laughterhouse and their white nerd fans are very very defensive about their FLOP... if they didn't KNOW it was a total fucking disaster they'd keep their mouths shut... meanwhile, they affect arrogance and start wondering how the hell they're going to live solo again since they SUCK live... so forget that 'caking on the road' bullshit... even white Euro nerds don't believe that with these bums.

    • ETK

get a life. how the fuck can you know what slaughterhouse were expecting? I don't think they expected to go gold, when you have Crooked I blasting the radio every which way. get a fuckin clue and stop being a hater with a purpose

  • Conscious

Record sales are a thing of the past, Rappers have taken advantage of other revenue streams which is why Rozay & Khalifah made 9 million dollars apiece last year without going platinum.

  • Anonymous

slaugtherhouse is done. holy shit. they're on borrowed time up at interscope. eminem can't save them. eminem is washing his hands of them and they'll be gone. royce will stay to console eminem.

  • Anonymous

Lecrae is dope. I know alot of people think listening to Christian rap is lame, but dude really goes in on his music. Just started listening to him last week and he really is nice.

  • DrebinSlevin

Well no one can say that Slaughterhouse didn't flop. Another Shady Records release fails to move units. Eminem may be one of the GOAT rappers but he's been pushing out flop rappers since before record sales took that sharp decline.

    • Big Dan

The issue is the industry, not Eminem. If you are not making radio singles that go quadruple platinum and you are very underground, technically, you can't expect to move units and it does not help with the state of the industry today. Again, look at Rihanna. She is the top pop artist out today, took over from Britney and look at her numbers. No disrespect, platinum is platinum, but that's like Kobe only putting up 12 points.

    • Anonymous

what about 50 cent and Obie Trice...what about D12...yall dudes from South are stupid as fuck

    • Anonymous

eminem is not a good label owner

  • Anonymous

Ross still at 380k ? lmao. I knew he wasn't as hot as people say he is, doesn't even have a hit single this year.

    • Anonymous

Lil Wayne's sales are based on his name alone, not quality music. The only song on C4 that was bangin, was "John" featuring Rozay

    • Anonymous

waynes last album sold 950k in a week are you in denial or just misinformed? cause its either one or the other. there is absolutely no indicatin of a decline in waynes sales. you aint gotta like him to acknowledge facts.

    • Anonymous

Wayne is on a tier by himself. I know people can't stand the fact that his music sells the most so they say he buys his own albums, but when you look on Forbes you will see the profits being made off the album sales. Whether he has declined musically or not, it is what it is.

    • Anonymous

stop the bullshit ross been out since 05 he just not a star like you think he is ross singles are trash he had a joint with usher that flopped hard ross is on the third tier or even fourth on the rap heavy weight list

    • bruhbruh

^ in 2008-2009 probably, but not so much anymore. he lost his touch, drake is taking his shit over now.

    • Anonymous

      you forgot wayne

    • Brandon

How many times we have to stress this, Eminem, JayZ, Kanye, Drake are the only rappers going platinum. Rick Ross album is the dopest, his singles go hard, and he step it up each album. You can't say that about no other artist that go platinum today. Big KRIT album real nice and his album sales are horrible!

  • Anonymous

MY NIGGA LECRAE !!!!!!!!! positive music almost went number 1.

  • Anonymous

    gfid not going gold? wtf

  • Sam snead

the most telling is how tiity-boy aka 2 chains is going to sell as many records as Nas. Life is good is a very solid album from front to back. Hip-Hop is Dead or is like Mike Tyson in his last fight

  • Donald Passman

With so many other opportunities to generate revenue, labels and artists no longer have to rely on album sales for income. In the old days album sales accounted for more than 70% of the income and now it's less than 30%. Now if an artist only achieves gold status, it's just as profitable as an artist going 2x platinum 10 years ago. Times have changed and will continue to change.

    • @HATE IS A DISEASE

Your comment is a pile of shit.

    • ^

WROOOOOONG!!! YOU FAIL!! WARNER BROTHERS ARE MAKING MORE OFF OF MMG THAN ROSS.

    • get ur facts str8

rick ross has a label deal and only pays ted lucas 20% royalties for rick ross albums. all other albums on mmg is all owned 100% by ross.

    • Anonymous

they all have 360 deals they just dont speak on it ross is a slip n slide artist

    • 360 Deal wasn't the point

Everything that was said about a 360 Deal was a moot point.

    • HATE IS A DISEASE

RICK ROSS DOESN'T HAVE A 360 DEAL, DRAKE DOESN'T HAVE A 360 DEAL, LIL WAYNE DOESN'T HAVE A 360 DEAL AND NEITHER DOES DRAKE. RICK ROSS IS MAKING MORE MONEY OFF OF HIS ALBUM SALES THAN PLATINUM ARTISTS FROM 10 YEARS AGO.

    • john doe

you're correct in saying that labels and artists make more money outside of album sales.

    • HIPHOPDX

stupid smart mofo just shut it down lmao

    • STUPID SMART MOTHERFUCKERS

idiot ? ahah this is where both of you are stupid labels invented the 360 deal to STOP artist from MAKING 100% PROFIT FROM TOURING BOOKS AND MOVIES BACK THEN THE ONLY MONEY THE LABEL COULD RECOUP WAS FROM THE MUSIC a artist would book shows and the label could not recoup for the performance NOW LABELS OWN YOUR NAME AND LIKENESS 80% OF THE ARTIST ARE ON A 360 DEAL TODAY look at young buck he couldnt even keep his name so thats why i said HELL NO YOU GOT IT WRONG FAGGOT YOU DONT KNOW SHIT ABOUT THE BISNESS.

    • Anonymous

wow you hit it right on the numbers with those numbers. too bad most idiots can't understand and don't have the ability to even argue against it......lol. they just say stuff like "hell nooooooooooo haha you got it wrong all wrong"....lol

  • Big Dan

Gawd! I hope rappers, matter of fact, all artists are stepping up their tour and merchandise game. These numbers are horrible. After all that hype, you telling me 2 Chains and Frank Ocean are still under 300k sold? Even Trey Songs is bricking. Good chance Rozay and even Ocean might hit gold, but right now, none of them are collecting any royalties on those album. You figure Def Jam has to be giving Rozay about a million to make an album, so he is seriously in the hole now. Hopefully, cats don't take all their advance and spend on making the album. Some of it needs to go into your pocket these days. Nas has problems. He needs to get smart about his money and release albums more often because his best (sales) days are behind him. DJ Khaled?!?..Dude just needs to stop, what with these numbers. Kill the ego and find a permanent DJ gig in Vegas. Funny word just came out a month ago that he could not pay the rent on his apt. And he does look and act like the type of idiot that would live above his means to perpetrate an image. Wise up quickly dude. Funk Flex quit releasing albums after volume (4 I think) and his last one went gold. Slaughterhouse won't get another album off these numbers. None of them are stars and I don't think Interscope will continue them on as pet project. Again get smart and go tour as much as you can off this album and the Em connection because it is a rap. Rihanna is only platinum and weekly sales are dropping to zero. That's scary for every other artist out there. That's in the top three of all albums released this year if its not number 1 and it has only sold 1 milion copies. SCARY! Nowadays UPS is hiring is not an insult. Its good advice.

    • Greg Focker

@ Big Dan UPS is hiring? wale didnt even make the top 20 forbes list of hip hop cash kings this year yet he still made 5 million. His last album isnt even gold yet. lol you make that much at UPS?

    • Anonymous

why niggas so obsessed with how much ross makes. dudes net worth is 26 mil. debate over. step your own game up

    • @grip

ross not getting all his profit he not even his own boss he a slip n slide artist do your research

    • Randy

      @roy Misery loves company!

    • Anonymous

You do know ross is a slip n slide artist? he got to many people in his pockets before he gets paid

    • Anonymous

aint no label putting that much money up for a gold artist ross still doing clubs he never headlined his own major tour

    • Roy

rihanna has never done big album numbers. she does make alot of hit singles though. 2 chainz and trey songz sold about as much as i expected. trey sort of fell back, 2 chainz only appeals to a particular demographic. frank ocean with his controversy being gay i wasnt expecting him to sell much either. it was great promo regardless of his motives. i thought it was cool that he released it for free early though that may have hurt his sales. sales are relatively low, but album sales have never been a primary source of income for musicians. My cousin got a deal a year ago and h's already doing very well for himself. Just because they didnt go gold in a week they should apply to UPS? huh? lol just because you gave up on your dreams and didnt live up to expectations doesnt mean everyone else deserves to go down the same depressing path as you did. like others said stop being a desktop A&R cause you just end up sounding bitter.

    • Anonymous

in other words ain't nothing wrong with an advance.

    • Anonymous

cash money records got a 30 million dollar loan from universal back in 1999 with a 3 million dollar advance. they also got 1.5 million dollars for up to 6 artists put out per year and last they got 80 percent of the profit. i'm sure ross gets at least 8 million in advance per year and 4 million per artist. on top of that he probably getting at 80 percent profit as well.

    • Anonymous

lol rick ross in the hole? i fucking hate computer a & r's. always trying to kick knowledge but end up sounding stupid for the most part

    • Anonymous

you do know what advance means? ITS A LOAN

    • GRiiP

Rick Ross has a label deal, which pays more than $1,000,000 advance, so stop with the stupid lies. He getting all the money minus a distribution fee.
