Timbaland Reacts To Drake Executive Producing Aaliyah's Album

Timbaland responds to the news of Drake's involvement in the posthumous record from Aaliyah.

Earlier this week, news broke that Drake will reportedly executive produce a posthumous album from the late Aaliyah. Now, in a recent interview with Power 105.1's The Breakfast Club, the singer's one-time collaborator Timbaland weighs in on the news.

Timbo didn't take the news of Drake's involvement on the record too well. He said that if Drizzy wants to move forward with the Aaliyah record, he feels that he and Missy Elliott should be involved, as they were two of Aaliyah's most frequent collaborators.

“I know they trying to drop some Aaliyah records, but if [Drake] do it, it should be with me and him, and Missy,” he said. “I don't know what's going on. The proper way to do that would be for me, him and Missy to be all on the record. For it to be on his record, that would not be right."

The YMCMB rapper is reportedly set to debut his single with the late singer at the OVO Festival this weekend in Toronto. Check out the full interview below, courtesy of HipHopWired.

    • James Gray

Dizzy is just out of pocket for not actually remake the songs. In reality he is just taking the songs and making them his own.

  • OvO Bugz

Oh you mad cause nobody ever did it like me? - Drake Timbaland I'm the man, Yeah I said. Aaliyah's mine, don't you forget it.

  • Sad...

Who gave drake authority over Aaliyah? His creepy ass has been creeping around Aaliyah for far too long.

  • what

Man out of respect, which is seem to be missing these day Tim and Missy should have some kind of involvement, it is just right man, but if they leave them oh well life goes on

  • nickrazor2000

It might take a while for Drake to finish the album Because he still has to pass Algebra class

  • The Ice Cold Phenom

Tim and Missy must have substantial involvement in a project like this. Bottom line!

  • MGRUPPE.COM

WONDER HOW LONG IT WILL TAKE FOR R. KELLY TO SHOW UP AND PROMOTE HIMSELF THE WAY LIKE TIMBO IS DOING RIGHT NOW. LET AALIYAH REST IN PEACE YOU FUCKERS.

  • themighty

ok, this was the last straw. fuck drake.

  • 2-Sentz

I can understand Timbo being in his feelings about not being involved in the Aaliyah album, but aint that the business? As far as the industry is concerned, anything with Drake's name attached to it turns to gold, so why not a posthumous Aaliyah album? Timbo and Missy both used to have that going for them in their hay day, but times change check the music when you get a chance http://soundcloud.com/dcshaman

  • AaliyahFan

Aaliyah's brother, Rashad Haughton, said earlier in March "No official album [is] being released and supported by the Haughton family."

  • King of Kingz

Noooooooo....it wud be appropriate that Timb and Missy do it. Nobody says anything about Pacs ppl putting all his stuff out after death, or Puffy sucking the Biggie teet! These artists were taken too early, so as fans I have no problem with more music and work being brought out, as long as its appropriate and the right ppl are involved to keep it as authentic as possible. You think Puffy would be coo, with ANYone executive producing anything for BiG?Hell No! Andus, I don't get what all you suckers are complaining about money and making money off artists who have died. Artist are artist, they are supposed to sell records, and make music, that's wha they do.Real fans will not have a problem with making new material or bringing unreleased meterial out, As long as the industry don't try to popcornafy this shit, with the current mainstream bullshit.Eilvis fans would not want Timbo producing an Elvis tribute album. Beatles fans would not like anybody other than Maccartney Exec producing unreleased Lennon stuff. It's gotta be done right, according to the legacy....and you definitely don't get the amatures in the game to lead this typa project. What u think Qunicy Jones would say or think if they tried to mess with MJ'S Thriller? Y'all need to put this shit in perspective!

I DON'T WANNA CLOWN U BECAUSE U ALREADY CLOWNED YOURSELF STOP SKIMMING & READ HOW I C&P'ED A COMMENT AND THEN SAID NOT ONLY WAS THAT PERSON MOST LIKELY NOT EVEN THINKING ABOUT AALIYAH, DRAKE IS GONNA "YMCMB/MMG" THE ALBUM READ HOW I SAID "SOUND" LIKE IF U LISTEN TO THE SONG U CAN REPLACE MISSY WITH BABY GIRL Y? BECAUSE MISSY WROTE A LARGE MAJORITY OF HER SONGS UR NOT THE ONLY ONE WHO DOESN'T LIKE WHAT IS HAPPENING NOW IF UR AN ADULT LIKE I AM U WOULD APOLOGIZE 4 UR MISTAKE

    • King of Kingz

How the hell would you know what Missy would write?ur entire post don't make sense, your probably also still in high school. Real fans on this blog kno what I'm saying, and everybody feels tha same. If you think Drake trying to keep her alive, pick up an Aaliyah Album and listen to this shit on here,. Sounds like drake wants to feature Aaliyah rather than pay tribute! Ignorant suns of guns!

  • King of Kingz

@killah_casp: you hit the nail on the head - This young money idiot better not try and do ANYTHING on PAC!!!!!!!,I'm so serious. In fact I don't want young money to do anything!!!they all sound the same!while birdie bird is sucking Wayne's face, he and slim jim don't even know how to manage the supposed "first lady of rap". She's starting to sound like that shit u hear at the bumper car rides at a fair frowned....talkking bout female rapper, get the cut outta here. Btw, just heard this so called Aaliyah ft Drake - enough said. First off, it sounds like him, his sound, his style! It's not Doing anything coming close to making anything for Aaliyah. This is why Timb n Missy needs to be leading this shit. This is waaaaaaay outta his league.no female artist will touch Aaliyah, not even RiRi or even BeyBey, they will NEVER! She had way too much grace and beauty, that's why only Timb n Missy get this!i hate the industry for this!U idiots have no idea what music is anymore! Who tha fuck is running this show???!!?!?

  • Anonymous

If Timbo & Missy or R Kelly said they had this planned most of you would say it's a money grab from someone hoping to jump start their career again. If Dame Dash said he was going to executive produce this you would say the same thing. Since it's Drake or if it was Ross you say they're keeping her music alive. We'll let you tell it.

  • King of KingzMcrahim

I don't have anything wrong with anybody honouring the angel that left us too soon. I think its only necessary that we remember great artists and ppl who walked this industry with grace. I dunno how Drake got involved in this, but I think is pure fucking arrogance and complete bullshit that his name is on e executive producer chair?!?!im a huge fan of Aaliyah and I dunno about anybody else, but as a fan i almost feel offended that this dude be "leading" this project. This is typical the arrogance of these new artists. I was actually rooting for Drake I the beginning, but as time goes on this cat gets more and more arrogant. Just coz he's rumoured to be tapping RiRi, don't mean he can come close to Aaliyah. Straight up Timbo 100% right, it should be him and missy and ONLY them, to executive produce a posthumous album for her. Sure if he wants to be on tracks, and if other artist wanna get in on that, why not, cool! I'm sure he is a fan, but what the fuck he think he doing carrying the torch on this one, Wrong move boiii!! This cat gonna start pissing Lot of ppl off, n I fell Timbo opinion. These young money fucknuts are getting too big of they boats!

  • killah_casp

WTF IS THIS WORLD COMING TO PISS OFF DRAKE NO ONE LIKES YOU AND TIMBO A BITCH TO YOU SHOULD BE LIKE HOLD UP A SEC THIS KID DIDNT EVAN KNOW MY GIRL NOW HES LEACHING OFF HER SHIT PPL NEED TO LET THE DEAD REST IN PEACE THE INDUSTRY LIKE MAGGOTS CHEWING INTO DEAD ARTISTS WORK FOR MORE MONEY FUCK DRAKE AND THE INDUSTRY I REFUSE TO ACCEPT THIS SHIT

"It like a weird infatuation he has on her all of a sudden" Next week, he's announcing he's executive producing Left Eye's album.

  • Anonymous

"all this business looks weird if you ask me" That's the music biz for ya. Whether you're dead or alive, someone wants a piece of the cake.

  • Anonymous

also, if timb and missy wanted to do something for aaliyah they had 10yrs to do so. dont get mad now cuz drake is trying to keep her name alive.

    • killah_casp

hold up drake is keeping her name alive .....drake. ur a little bitch u deserve a slap drake is a phony pussy clown off a rapper hes already killing hip hop now hes opening up the coffins off those who have passed and pissing in that 2 if drake trys to jump on some tupac shit i will finally loose it with that little faggot hes skating on thin ice as it is answer me this question so many rappers that were true and inspirational have been gunned down so why the fuck is drake still standing

    • Anonymous

"drake is trying to keep her name alive." You mean to say make money off her name?

  • Anonymous

im confused as to who owns aalyiahs music? how can drake just up and decide hes gonna produce anything baring her name?

  • Jg

Just cuz Drake is one of the hottest acts right now, and has an unhealthy obsession with Aaliyah the record company is gna have him produce her album instead of her 2 closest friends in the industry?! They tarnishing her legacy for a slightly bigger payday.

  • Anonymous

People on this site, half of you understand business, the rest of you are the dumbass consumers who understand nothing and just eat what's served to you mindlessly. Drake is EXECUTIVE producer, meaning he's just gonna be bringing this album together however he sees fit. I mean Drake is an artist and he's in the music business and he's doing well in the business because the consumers eat that shit up. Besides if you were in the know about Drake, you'd know his main in-house producer is Noah 40 and I think damn right, because his beats are fantastic. But whoever produces the beats for this album, better do the vocals justice.... although what if this is on some Tupac conspiracy level and that plane never crashed? she just backed out of the fame and fortune lifetyle because she didn't want to sell her soul but now some other industry bitches are trying to sell her soul for her for them... if this album aint free, somebody loves MONEY more than they love Aaliyah and hell, she might not even be dead, she might just be making music still..... don't act like they couldn't digitally adjust the vocals and manipulate them to sound like they were recorded at any given moment... if they can make a hologram of Tupac, they can make somebody's vocals sound younger and the recording sound older. I'm not even joking when I say even I could do that stuff on my lousy computer if given a vocal track... all this business looks weird if you ask me.

    • King of Kingz

Fo'real, ur a fuckin idiot for writing what u just wrote. U either don't know anything about the music industry, or ur way too young to know much about the history behind Aaliyah, Timbo and Missy!

    • Anonymous

Nice novel. Too bad nobody gives a fuck, fuckboy.

  • Anonymous

I think the whole idea is kind of sick and disgusting how the artist doesn't even have to be alive these days for money to be made off them. It's straight disrespectful making a profit off a dead persons music. If they wanted to keep her legend going and wanted her music to have presence, they wouldn't sell it, like she's some kind of business oppurtunity. They'd just share the love and good music, and her friends should decide amongst themselves who does what with the record and they should all be happy with it and everything. If they make money, which they will, it should be burried next to her, to show that the money isn't important but spreading her music is....

  • Miles

regardless it should be straight as long as no one else from young money is involved. Noah Shebib is a great producer and that who Drake will probally get to cover everything

  • Chris Etrata

To all those who keep saying what exective producer is, please note it means choosing not only producers but rappers as well for a posthumous project. Drake will probably get Lil Wayne who will probably degrade Aalliyah with lines like "pop that pussy" "suck my ice cream cone" and other lines like that. Timbaland should be the executive producer and not drake.

  • Anonymous

they are doing it for the money timbo. kinda like how you starting making pop and abandoned urban music.

    • King of Kingz

This is one of the most stupid comments I've seen on this?are you trying to say Timb can't produce anything other than commercial viable music. You need to educate ur self on not only HipHop n how producers like him came up, but on the industry as a whole. Then yo dumbass wouldn't make a comment like that!your probably still I high school!

  • Chaos

Yeah this sounds double goofy to not even consider R.Kelly, Timbaland, and Missy Elliot- I think this is called bastardization of her namesake and likeness. Who would let Drake produce anything? I would perfer to let her friends do it because they know her and would do her justice and don't forget to add a duet with Ginuwine would be excellent

  • steve

Help a nigga get some money to feed his kids by going here http://goingback2school.blogspot.com/

You know I wouldn't be all too surprised if the music industry in the state it is in made a legit record like that and tried to sell it. The music would be most likely awful as shit in every aspect but that joking tracklist hell even I would buy it, let alone all the fans just to see what the hell...

To be honest I would rather hear her over some chilled out 40 beats than Timbo's horrible shock value pop production. This guy hasn't been relevant as a producer in Hip Hop for nearly a decade. Also I would LOVE to hear Aaliyah over some of the Black Hippy producer's beats. Blow My High is dope as fuck.

    • King of Kingz

This is also one of the dumbest comments over seen. Do you know Timbs background?Timb gave hiphop a new sound back in the day. He's one of the best at what he does. You need to educate yourself on hiphop, the industry and the history around it. It actually only boasts well for Timb that he produces across all genres and shows that he is a well rounded producer. I don't like the shock value shit, and it's tru, that wud not do Aaliyah justics at all. But u clearly don't know anything about Timbs background to know he wouldn't do that shit!

  • Ben wallacE

well this cat has the nerve to photoshop Aaliyah with an ovo t shirt? but guess what? fans aint gone do shit becuase we dont stand together when it comes to such bullshit. so whether we like it or not, it is gona happen and we got nobody to blame but ourselves.

  • Marcus

How about not releasing anything at all? Why not just let the woman and her music rest in peace?

  • harveybabyyy

You guys really want some, Shock Value Pop beats from Timbo? just because he was close to her, i bet you guys were the same ones mad at him for saying he's to big for hip hop & he will work with Miley Cyrus & Jonas Brothers lmao.

    • harveybabyyy

I don't know what a bigot is but I assure you I am not, "FCUKBOI LOGIC" is ignorance right which the term for Nigger. dumbass. the comment had nothing to do with Timbaland I've bought his album,

    • Anonymous

Is this how it goes here? Someone brings up a fact and you cannot answer so you resort to emotional, racist comments? Anyway it doesn't matter how much of a bigot you are, Timbaland still has numerous songs of her which are within his possession.

    • harveybabyyy

      ignorant, nigger I assume.

fuck drakes wack ass!!!! wtf is he doing working on a Aaliyah album? It should be Timbo and Missy even DMX not drakes aorry ass! damn im so sick of these bitches like drake.

  • k9

i'm shocked at how many of you have no idea what an executive producer does... He's just going to be getting the money and the right people together to make the record happen. He's not making beats. a "Producer" and an "Executuive Producer" are two VERY different things. You think Suge Knight was making beats for snoop all that time in the 90's? No. He was the business man.

  • Anonymous

This is some bullshit! Fuck Drake!

  • Anonymous

Drake shouldn't be allowed to touch her music! She was a angel and this motherfuckers is a devil that promotes whoreisim. They are trying to misconstrue her music and make it something to turn more teenage girls into whores. Fuck you Drake! Back the fuck off!

  • Angel

It like a weird infatuation he has on her all of a sudden. Where did love for her came from?? is he just a life long fan and now that he is in a "position of power" he decided to Executive Produce her album?

  • G5

I have to agree with Timbo on this one. I mean why put a guy that never knew, recorded or met with Aaliyah. I could see if they wanted him to co-executive produce it but this whole technology thing of bringing people back for songs is kind of a catch 22. On one hand it's cool but in the same respect it's wack. I just can't see Timbo or Missy not being involved on an Aaliyah project.

  • YESSIR

ITS YMCMB'S TIME TIMBO AND MISSY AINT ON CHAMPAGNE PAPI'S LEVEL

  • Mike

If Drake knows Hip-Hop & etc he would know that Timbaland (producer), Missy (Rapper/singer)& J. Cole (producer/rapper) should be able to be on this album as well. Aaliyah RIP

  • ETK

    Aaliyah deserved to die ;-)

  • muggz35

if u listen to the whole part of that interview bout the post aaliyah album..timbaland stated that the album should be for charity or free

  • Anonymous

    drake aint even a producer

  • Real Talk

I have all the respect in the world of Timbaland and Missy, they deserve their accolades but just because they were like family with Aaliyah doesn't mean they have to work everything posthumous. Get over it guys, I feel like its an ego thing not that he's really trying to protect her.

    • Anonymous

Drake can't use any unreleased material because Robert & Timothy have that. A good chance that any sample/song Drake wants to use from her, Robert, Timothy, Missy and Static Major wrote it and will need to be contacted to be compensated or sign waivers. Universal will need to have Warner & Sony sign off on the project, they have controlling interests in her publishing. None of what I described consists of an ego. No foul in Drake experimenting at the festival, but if he's truly serious he will have to reach out to them regardless.

    • Anonymous

im no drake fan at all but tim is not trying to protect her as a matter of fact him and missey did her wrong just before she died and they no they did

  • 3 headed monstah

TIMBALAND, MISSY, AND R KELLY, SHOULD BE THE ONLY PRODUCERS TO EVER PRODUCE A RECORD, FOR AALIYAH!. POINT BLANK. IT WOULDNT BE AN AALIYAH RECORD WITHOUT THERE PRODUCTION. POINT BLANK..WE WANT TO REMEMBER HER IN THE GOOD ERA OF MUSIC, NOT THIS WAK SHIT LOL

  • FuKKK DraKKKe

Sellout ass house nigger, how dare you to let Drake produce that bitch's album?!?!

  • wishworks

Don't know about this one. Aaliyah Got in the game with R Kelly producing. He got on some hands on , she left went to Missy and Tim,In stayed there until death, so to me Tim right about her album. That should be him and Missy. Drake should produce the joint on his album, that's only right, but a hole album nah. Oh and duds talk ish about Timberland, Watch your mouth dude is responsible for alot of great music HITS NIGGA. When you charge 300,000 for tracks, and you have to buy THREE, That's that work, track record speak for it self

  • Anonymous

"Missy & Timbaland were close friends of her" Life goes on though. They had their time with her, and have shared countless stories and experiences with her. If Drake is set to do it, more power to him.

  • imTravi

Honestly it shouldn' even be about Drake's popularity or his following...hell, the most he should do is add a verse to one of the songs, not "executive produce" the album. Let Tim Missy and Aaliyah's other producers handle this project.

  • Anonymous

Aaliyahs so fucking overrated sick of hard ons for the dead!

  • Anonymous

"I don't know what's going on. The proper way to do that would be for me, him and Missy to be all on the record" Translation, we want to get paid off Aaliyah's name too.

THIS IS POLITICS AS USUAL!! THE ONLY REASON WHY DRAKE WAS CONSIDERED IS BECAUSE HE HAS A HUGE FOLLOWING. HE ISN'T GONNA BE MIXING, HE ISN'T GONNA BE BE IN THE STUDIO PUTIING IT ALL TOGETHER, IT'S ALL STRICTLY FOR PUBLICITY! THIS IS EXAPNDING HIS RESUME, ALTHOUGH HIS ASS WON'T BE DOING MUCH. THIS IS THE INDUSTRY CASHING OUT ON AALIYAH'S DEATH!!!!!! HER FAMILY WILL NOT BE SEEING A DIME! THIS IS STRICTLY TO LINE THE LABELS POCKETS!! THE INDUSTRY IS FUCKED! FUCK THE INDUSTRY! FUCK DRAKE! • ....

What I just said on a different post... "Wouldn't it make sense to get somebody who can actually produce to be a "executive producer"? And maybe somebody who was actually close with Aaliyah not just a "Stan" of hers? Maybe Timbaland or even Missy Elliott (who incidental sang & rapped successfully before Drake)? But it's whatever just seems to be a popularity contest nowadays, no judging of talent."

  • Badmofo

Drake was a 15 year old kid when she passed away. Missy & Timbaland were close friends of her. Out of respect to the dead it seems that Timbaland & Missy should have been contacted 1st about this project. If they both passed on it then its fair game for Drizzy or who ever.
