Nelly Responds To Charlamagne Tha God Calling Him Musically "Cold"

Nelly says that the music industry is a "young man's game" and that careers have ups and downs.

Nelly stopped by Power 105's The Breakfast Club earlier this morning, fielding questions about his relationship with Ashanti and Flo Rida biting his style. During the interview, Charlamagne Tha God called his musical career "cold," to which Nelly calmly responded that careers have ups and downs.

"Oh, you think so?" he said. "I only had one record that didn’t have a number one record on. The last record I put out, I had a number one record. I sold five million records. Put out six singles."

The St. Lunatic, who also spoke on his upcoming album M.O., acknowledged that the industry is a "young man's game" and that it's about staying relevant. "It’s definitely a young man’s game and it’s about survival. You get to a point where it’s just about turning pages. When you old not as in age, but old as in you been in the game for a minute, like 12+ years, it’s been a long time," he said. "Nothing continues to excel. It’s called a career for a reason. You got your ups, you got your downs. But as long as you around, that’s the thing."

Relax, Nelly. It was only just a dream.

  • ScorpioOGCJM

C the thing about Charlamagne is that somtimes I hate to agree wit him. But if u think about what he sayin there always at least alittle truth to it. Thats y I like him cuz he 100...but he still got ma dude Nelly and TI fucked up doe

  • R.Pgh

Never cared for Nelly's music, but dude pushed a shit load of units for several years. Accomplished a lot more than Charlamagne has.

  • Anonymous

Nelly is the most award winnin hip hop artist of all time, he could buy Charlemagne as his little slave. U niggas need to do yr research

  • J

Do you understand what "musically cold" means? Rick Ross is hot right now. Meek Mill is hot right now. Nelly is "cold" right now. That doesnt mean he isnt who he is...he just doesnt have any music out right now. Its pretty simple to understand and its true. I think alot of you...and possibly Nelly in the interview, took it as something else. He knows he's cold which is why he is on the Breakfast Club, doing a TV show/skit, and did a full media press this week. He trying to "heat" up

  • Brik

I can't stand this Charlemange dude. It's like he envisions himself as the Howard Stern of hip hop or something, trying to be edgy, but just comes off looking like an asshole most of the time.

  • NO NELLY, THE MUSIC INDUSTRY IS A CLASSIC ALBUM DRIVEN GAME

No matter how much money you make or how many years you are in the game. If you haven't put out any hip hop classics, you haven't got a legacy worth remembering. Has Nelly put out any classics? No. So really his in no position to dictate where the game goes

    • dd

^^ Country Grammer? That shit is dope to this day. Ride Wit Me too.

    • SMH

Co-sign also @Bom9191 I hope you are joking about Nellyville. Nobody will be talking about that album in no 5, 10, or 15 years from now. And classic music is when you pull up bumping an album 10+ yrs old and everybody is like "now that's the shit turn it up and let it ride" nobody does that to Nelly's music...lol

    • X

Co-sign. Certain mc's never financed heavy off hip hop but released classics instead that could be listened today and could still be considered great music. Its not a "young man's game" when at the age of 37 you've dropped nothing but forgettable music that people can only remember by RIAA certifications.

    • Bom9191

From whos stand point? It may not of been the kind of "hip-hop" you consider legend status but Nelly has cranked out some damn near classic shit. In 5 years ppl will be talking about Nellyville and shit, bc that is part of the new generation. Nelly is already someone of the past but he definetly put his stamp on the rap game

  • Chingy

Nelly was the first successful artist to rap and sing.

Wow, niggas dissing Nelly, Nelly ain't got spit, Nelly could only make hooks. Nelly one of the WORST rappers ever. lol, how many of you have actually listened to a Nelly album. Niggas want Nelly to be the GZA and shit.

  • J

Nelly wasn't ever the best hip hop artist but he did his thing and made a lot money at it. I've seen this clown Charlamagne Tha God or whatever dumb name he gave himself talk all kinds Sh_t about a lot of talented people. He needs to learn how to give respect where respect is due. At the end of the day, this dude needs to be thankful he's not emptying everyones garbage cans off the back of a truck.

    • J

The dude's a punk, plain and simple! I dont even like Nelly, but to come with disrespect on the radio towards the man is bitch-made! Nelly ought to give this bit_h a job cleaning his pool! Maybe I just hate Charlamagne the God!

    • Marx

It's easy to give props to people that have tons of yes men & fans. It takes a lot more to tell someone what a lot of people might think but don't say to the face of someone that can probably get you touched up on.

  • Anonymous

Nelly got lucky. He was not good at making complete albums that you just had to listen to non stop. He was the dude who would drop catchy singles that you would download and that was the extent of Nelly. That's good he saved his money cause comebacks are rare.

    • LMAO

I have to agree with the first anon. If you think Nelly was anything more than a singles catchy hook guy you are sadly mistakenly

    • Anonymous

you're an absolute idiot or your 16. go look at the awards, the singles and the albums sold. He would have 4 or 5 outta 10-12 of straight bangers.

  • Anonymous

Nelly lyrically ofcourse, is far from the best but he knows how to make music dat'll appeal to the mainstream audience. He's nvr been fake & I think he's stayed true to himself and music when he crossed over. Gotta respect dat

  • Anonymous

Never liked nelly's music, but you got to respect his business acumen! Lyrically, he was one of the worst MCs ever, and honestly, he never really repped hip hop, but the money he's gotten from them trash radio hits def helped him establish his second rate energy drink and help propel him into a business man. He's still a corny ass talentless country ass Mutha fuckah.

  • kingBeno

Man this dude still owns a piece of an NBA team. His music has been pop to point so be it. I don't know Nelly. I have an issue with Lil'Wayne and his camp because those who are repping Young Money (Drake, Nikki Minaj) have went pop just after a few years in the biz. Nikki was never pop. But mysteriously she is now. Evolving because of talent is one thing. Evolving due to money sucks.

  • Industry Advocate

What Charlamagne said wasn't hate or a lie. I like Nelly and he has talent. However, Nelly is a victim of making money in other avenues and not putting the same focus on his music as he once did. Y'all keep talking about how much money he's made and how big his sells were, but since Nellyville, his quality and focus has been ASS at best. Age has nothing to do with it. He's younger than both Jay-Z and Nas ( and I think Eminem) and they still put out that quality...and they have had ups and downs. I think he has the talent to come with some music that can tap that audience that bought all those records and he still has the fans to to buy his records. He just doesn't give them what they want, and that's good focused real Nellyville Music! Money doesn't equate quality and longevity. Hits and consistency do. See 50 and Ludacris for more examples of this.

    • remaste

props 100% right same with Snoop

    • IDK

Both of your paragraphs are on point. Props to you, Industry Advocate.

    • Industry Advocate

Yeah I can. They are the best ever, true. But sales wise and impact, he is defeinitely comparable to Em and Jay. (Jay said it himself in "Excuse Me Miss") My point in that was, they could have easily ventured off into some BS like he did, but they stayed focused on what got them everything else that they music got them. They had some falls (Nastradamus, BP2, Encore...) but they held their careers intact depsite outside success (Movies, Basketball Teams, Labels). I'm not saying he's ill like them...i'm saying he could have kept his game up like them.

    • Anonymous

you can't compare him to two the best ever. They stay relevant for that reason, they are absolute top tier rappers.

    • the doc

cosign my nigga cosign all day

  • Donald Passman

Good interview and Nelly is a man of his word. I remember back before his first album came out, his ad said that he was going to put Saint Louis on the map, like Master P did Louisiana. At the time, that was a very bold statement, because No Limit was running the rap game.

  • Anonymous

Who listens to radio anyway? You're ignorant even for listening to anything a "radio personality" says.

  • Anonymous

He's been more successful than most rappers could ever dream to be.. He's still rich & living. What do you want from the guy?

  • Anonymous

I ain't been checking for Nelly since he dropped Country Grammar but he always seemed like a cool dude, got to give him his respect just for doing what he did for the South back in his day and for still making music and money.

  • Sco*

..who Charlafag says....Nelly say he's still spending Apple Bottom money......

  • The biz

Country Grammer was a great album, he has alot of good songs but since 2006 hes fallen off, his last few albums have been trash and if it werent for just a dream his career would be in shambles

  • Every Rapper in the Game

    Nelly is musically cold.

  • Anonymous

He's the only trash rapper I can tolerate. Ride wit Me is a nice song.

  • BlazeDatIshUp

Regardless of what folks say Nelly has sold a lot of records. He's sold more records than most of the rappers out now, and now as with a lot of artists, his music isn't in high demand right now. Shit happens and he's still rich. You can't really take what these stupid radio people say seriously. Their opinions are irrelvant. They are mostly idiots who crave attention and are willing to say dumb shit to get it. I did not like when he was trying to diss KRS One(I know they squashed it), but he had some good joints, and he still has those who will cop his shit as long as it's good ish.

  • dont be mat@da truth

only note worthy thing nelly ever did was Tip Drill. it must been them hoez cause it aint yo sillz!!
