Chief Keef Details How Interscope Won A Bidding War To Sign Him

In an interview with ThisIs50.com, Chief Keef explains how he landed at Interscope and how 50 Cent and G-Unit influenced him.

Chief Keef currently has the number 50 song on Billboard magazine’s R&B/Hip Hop chart with “I Don’t Like.”  In addition to a spike in radio play and an unofficial G.O.O.D. Music remix of the song he saw an intense bidding war for his services begin as his track and video went viral. How did Interscope ultimately win when Cash Money, Grand Hustle and Young Jeezy’s CTE imprint were all rumored to be vying for Keef’s services?

“I was talking with Larry Jackson…first he came to my old house in Michigan,” Chief Keef explained during an interview with ThisIs50. “Then he came to my new house, so I talked to him both times. We had agreed to make it happen, but other labels were coming too though.”

And while Chief Keef previously explained how important it was to be on the same label as Eminem, 50 Cent and Dr. Dre, he talked further about 50’s influence.

“I ain’t met 50 Cent yet, but I used to listen to him all the time,” Keef added. “G-Unit…Tony Yayo, Lloyd Banks, what? I ain’t gonna lie, I lost my mama’s G-Unit CD and I ain’t even wanna go back in the house. As a matter of fact, I didn’t even lose it. I cracked her [Beg For Mercy] CD, and I did not wanna go back in the house and tell her that.”

If reports of Keef getting a publishing deal under Dr. Dre are true, he may be able to change the fact that he hasn’t met 50 Cent. The latter’s final obligation to Interscope will be released under the Aftermath/Shady imprint. The full ThisIs50 interview, which also includes a freestyle and Chief Keef rehashing the minor rift between Young Chop and G.O.O.D. Music can be found below.

I've never heard Chief Keef's music and I can tell I don't want to, therefore I shall not. He's saying it's good to be on interscope with 3 of musics most well known popular artists.... so what, Eminem could of retired, he's just making music to keep the fans happy now... that Recovery album was the most mainstream marketable music ever, just like practically all of Em's music since he got signed. 50 Cent should of retired, he's gotten lazy and is way past his decline in popularity and success in the business. Dr Dre? the guy is a joke artist, he aint putting out anything soon and his name spells failure in my opinion. Someone who is considered a veteran, an OG, whatever the fuck, can't put out a good album when the rap and hip hop industry has turned into shit... come on, all he has to be is make a fucking west coast classic which for someone of his status shouldn't be hard? or he could make a catchy as fuck mainstream album with a bunch of singers on the hooks and whatever these kids like these days... some simple shit. Whatever Dre is doing for that Detox myth, that album became so anticipated that I think everyone actually forgot about it because it's taken so long to drop. I understand Keef is star struck and thinks Interscope is gonna embrace him, but no, he's gonna get treated like shit and nobody will notice him... kinda like Cashis or Stat Quo or whoever they were... except those guys I recall could rap... I bet Keef probably can't, he even looks like some brain dead puppet to be used to make money from these children that will buy whatever they tell you is "hot".

poor label to choose, Interscope sucks when it comes to the relationships with their artists if you dont go plat

  • Qwazaar

for real.. everyone on interscope is pissed and trying to get out of their album deals. i'd usually never advise an artist to join an artist ran label but he probably would've been way better off with cash money. they seem to take care of their artists and at the very least he would've prob had more flexibility to get out of a bad album deal

maaan. i'ma stop hatin on dude. it's so obvious how young he is. he's just a fan and happy to be a fame artist and meet his favs. his momma listens to 50. if he would've really been influenced by 50 he wouldn't have signed to interscope.

I think you're forgetting the word opinion exists. If you don't like (pardon the pun) Keefs music, don't listen to it... it's THAT simple, just like crunk music, it's simple. That's my opinion. Listen to what you want, and stop wasting time hating on those getting more money than you for doing some shit you should care less about.

You say Chief can't rap.. which while that is true.. you mention JEEZY. Jeezy is one of the worst rappers ever..

    • Anonymous

"Really???" nailed it. Don't you realize that there's different types of hip hop? Not everybody has to be a fucking 2Pac or Nas. He makes hype music. Who the fuck is categorizing him to be a lyrical rapper.

    • c

I completely realize that! It just doesnt fill any void in my opinion! I'd rather listen to 2chainz all day or TI or Jeezy!!! The "crunk" sound has to do a lot with the beats!! I'd rather listen to instrumentals than listen to his non-rappin ass on any track!!! Garbage!

    • Really???

Niggas will always need to fill that crunk music void e.g lil jon, waka flocka, cheif keef accomplishes that thats all, nobody says throw in that chief keef i am trying to elevate my mind they say throw in that chief keef im trying to get hype and go off! U do realize there are different types of hip hop, right hipster?

    • Anonymous

Who the fuck is categorizing them together? They are completely different. Chief Keef makes hype music. Bada$$ makes lyrical shit. Not everybody has to be a Biggie Smalls.

The problem is, most of these comment-writers are dumber than the subject they try to criticize.

    • Anonymous

Chicago hip-hop will only thrive if its revival breeds more rappers like Common and Lupe Fiasco and fewer rappers like Chief Keef.
