Machine Gun Kelly Reveals That He Hated "Invincible," Says People Were Fired Because Of The Song

Machine Gun Kelly speaks on feeling forced to make "Invincible," expresses his distaste for cookie cutter songs.

Despite the success of Machine Gun Kelly’s “Invincible” featuring singer Ester Dean, MGK revealed in an interview with WILD 94.1 that he initially hated the song. And although he didn’t share the specifics he even went on to explain that there was some kind of contest between himself and the other rappers on Interscope involving the song.

“First off, I hated the song when I first did it because it was brought to me by corporate America,” Machine Gun Kelly revealed. “So basically Jimmy Iovine was like hey, first off they didn’t even come to me with the song, it was like a contest between the Interscope rappers like Yelawolf, Kendrick Lamar and myself, which I found out. It sucked and I hated it.”

During the interview Machine Gun Kelly explained that he was most offended by the fact that he wasn’t able to work with Ester Dean and producer Alex Da Kid directly on the song. Instead Dean’s hook was sent to him already completed.

“I don’t operate like that. I hate cookie cutter songs,” said Machine Gun Kelly. “You know like B.o.B with ‘Airplanes’ and the ‘Love The Way You Lie’ thing. You weren’t there making the song with each other in the studio. It was presented to you. I write all my hooks…So when I got this hook I was offended. You guys think I’m a cookie cutter artist. I don’t work like that. And I’ve never talked to Ester Dean in my life. I’ve never talked to the producer who’s Alex Da Kid who makes those cookie cutter records.”

The rapper had a bit of a change of heart in regards to making "Invincible" when he found out that people were actually being fired because of his unwillingness to go in the studio and complete the song.

“We’re in Detroit they call, they booked a studio. You have to do this. You have, have to, have to, have to. Like people are getting fired. And people really were getting fired over it,” MGK explained. “Cause they’re like, ‘You can’t make this petty new artist on our label go do a song? And this is the boss asking for it?’”

    fuck what you hate anyway

Should have gone the independent route, but it does take money to be an independent artist. I hate the song and I have to agree it is a cookie cutter type of beat and hook, you could picture any of the artists he said on that beat just because thats how Interscope works as a company. Still not really a fan of MGK but if he possibly had some better beats then I would give him more of a chance.

This is the first time I heard this song, sounds like a typical Alex da Kid song... MGK sounds terrible.

Why are you saying "niglet"? That just sounds awful. Who or whatever you are, if you want people to read your comment, don't insult your perceived audience with what appears to be a racial epithet.

never heard the track hes talkin about buy im sure it was wack, just like all his other shit

  • Trell

All you house niglets really need to respect MGK for saying what black men can't say and what they allow white men to say without consequences. If a brotha or a latin dude was spitting this knowledge behind the scenes he would be punished. Racism still exist and MGK is telling dudes the tricks of how they pit artist on the same company against each other to try to control you. Eminem was just like this when he came out- talking shit about everyone, but let blacks do it and then you step n fetch n niglets are scared hunching in the fetal position, like 'Don't talk about master!" get some balls and take his knowledge and beware

You guys make a lot of good points; Now that you bring this to my attention- I watched American Idol and then look at what MGK says and the same thing Jimmy Iovine does on there by trying to tell these Artist to be the "new version of old dead artist" is why the rappers are being failed deliberately. Originality and being authentic is discouraged by executives in this industry- Jimmy iovine does this bull to those artist on American Idol and none of them go anywhere after the show- then he turns around and tries to do it with rappers. In school we learned that maketing exist when you take old and new and infuse it together to make something original- but to keep telling artist to do things old and strangle them creatively is the reason rappers need to open their own business. Very depressing to know your set up for failure before you even get off the ground...

    • NONO

What the house niglets need to to is study history..Even the history of their own culture before assuming...Blacks have been saying this since hip hop was conceived...Public enemy and a slew of others have been saying it since the 80's and before then in the late 70's...MGK just couldn't get his way, he's not talking about changing anything, or fighting to change anything...

    • too smart

What black people are failing to derive from this man is this is the way the industry have killed many black mens career by trying to force songs on artist that may hurt their credibility. Granted some songs that they do this with work- then there are 15 more that don't work and then they shelve you and put out rumors you don't write your own hooks; so instead of trying to clown MGK for being transparent, dudes should be paying attention in order to keep your integrity

There u have it folks. These rappers do not control the music. They can make the best song ever if the label didn't write & approve the song it ain't seeing the light of day. Question is which rappers sold the soul & which ones didn't?

Welcome to the music industry youngin. Now that you're in, maybe you should educate yourself with some of the hip hop in from the 90's. There's quite a bit of songs that speak on how terrible it is to make music within the music industry.

gotdamn props to mgk for at least acknowledging that this song is wack and sound like airplanes, love the way you lie, ect. dont nobody wanna hear that shit all the time. you can make a commercial song without it sounding like a commercial for army recruitment. i thought i was the only one not feeling that shit. oh and that also goes for my life by slaughterhouse.not the lyrics just the beat and vibe.

  • Brasil

Hahah, am sure Charles Hamilton went through the same thing as well as Wale, and Kendrick Lamar is probably being forced to do wack songs just to sell this new wack kid of theirs, Chief Keef will probably go through the same thing Jimmy Iovine is a slave master who does not give 2cents about Hip Hop He turned Eminem into a Pop Hop artist the last Dr Dre single "I Need A Doctor" is sum commercial pop bullshit Jimmy you suck big time boss...BIG TIME!!!! You fucking up this beautiful art of hip hop just to get rich and buy yatchs and private jets...where is the appreciation of the art over greed? Its people like you that make us black people inferior to other races by constantly forcing artist to do garbage songs just to move units. FUCK YOU MAN!!!!

When I heard the song I thought his flow sounded like B.O.B and the hook was a rip off of Love The Way You Lie, so he is dead on with mentioning those songs as examples of cookie cutter. MGK welcome to real world of being a major label artist.
