Kendrick Lamar Lists His Top Five Favorite Rappers

Kendrick Lamar names his top five rappers, dead or alive.

Kendrick Lamar recently chopped it up with Wild 94.9’s Nessa, running down his top five rappers dead or alive. During the interview, he named Tupac Shakur as his favorite rapper, also including The Notorious B.I.G., Jay-Z, Nas and Eminem on his list.

“My top five, dead or alive. Tupac, definitely. Tupac because the emotion that he put in and how much he related to the people, and how much he connected. That’s what music is about,” he said. “Music is supposed to move, whether you’re saying the most intricate stuff or the most simple, dumbed down. You gotta make some type of connection, and I feel like he did that the best.”

He flipped his attention to the East Coast, naming The Notorious B.I.G. as another of his choice emcees. “Biggie, because of his wit. Biggie’s wit was incredible. His wit and his character, his personality and his flow and most of all, his confidence. Anybody that can talk about themselves on a record and still have screaming women at the front of the stage, unless you know it goes a long way with your confidence in being an artist.

“Jay-Z, it’s an incredible thing where you can listen to his music and feel like you’re having a sit-down with him,” he continued. “Nas, the art of storytelling, I think Hip Hop is really based on that and getting your point across. Nas does that incredibly. Eminem, just being a wordsmith, an amazing wordsmith.”

Time to end this G.O.A.T. foolishness. In this constant debate about Jay-Z being the best ever I read things like "Nas will destroy Jay-Z" or "Eminem got a better flow than Jay" Those are OPINIONS. When will you fools learn that you can't win a debate with OPINIONS. Every rapper has a different style based on where they are from, the time period in which they were most successful, and their unique personality. We all can go on for days about our personal preferences but in a debate criteria like this is completely IRRELEVANT and automatically BIASED. The only way to win a debate is with cold hard FACTS. And the fact of the matter is that, when you weigh all of the tangible criteria (Sales, Critical Acclaim, Consistency, Longevity, and Impact) Jay-Z makes the strongest case for the G.O.A.T. Eminem has sold nearly twice as much as Jay-Z, and he is Jay's equal when it comes to longevity and impact. But Em lacks the consistency or critical acclaim that Jay-Z has (Im not talkin cult/fanboy classics, Im talkin CERTIFIED classics. XXL/Rolling Stone/Source approved) Eminem is VERY close though. Nas has enjoyed more critical acclaim and more overall respect in the hip-hop community through the years. And he's definitely equal to Jay with longevity and impact. But he hasn't been no where near as much of a consistent presence in hip-hop as Jay has. And he is obviously lacking in the sales department. Lil Wayne just may be the most consistent rapper of all time. He's no slouch when it comes to longevity and impact either. His glaring flaw? In his 12 year career Lil Wayne has yet to drop a truly critically acclaimed classic album (and it can be done in this climate. just look at kanye's discography). Also, contrary to popular beleif, Wayne lacks in the sales department. Sure, Tha Carter III and IV are blockbuster albums, but his OVERALL sales of 10 mil US pale in comparison to Jay-Z's 31 mil. 2pac is a touchy subject. When it comes to impact, pac takes the cake. No other rapper touched the world like 2pac did. He, like Em, has also sold more than Jay and he was very consistent in his time. Sadly, 2pac passed before his time which allowed Jay-Z to surpass him in longevity and critical acclaim. LL Cool J was the prototype for what a G.O.A.T. could be. He has enjoyed the most longevity, and he was fairly consistent, but his sales, acclaim and overall impact are no where near the likes of 2pac, Eminem, and ofcourse Jay-Z. Biggie, Rakim, Common, Snoop, the list goes on. All of these MC's are great but none of them have the total G.O.A.T. package like Jay-Z does. Jay-Z is the 3rd highest selling rapper of all time, and the richest. He's one of the most acclaimed (perhaps only rivaled by his boy Kanye). He dropped multi-platinum albums YEARLY from 96'-03', and he is still going strong today. He's been in the game since 88'. He's impacted hip-hop in countless ways from starting one of the 1st successful MC-owned record labels, to being the 1st non-athlete with a signature shoe, to surpassing the likes of Elvis with #1 albums. Jay-Z is without question the Greatest MC Of All Time. Period. You don't have to listen to him everyday (Im currently on my Kendrick wave). You don't even have to like him. But for goodness sake, RESPECT THE FACTS.

everybody talking only american mcs, lol, what about europe? my top list would look like this - Soprano (FR) - Rohff (FR) - Example (UK) - La Fouine (FR) - Kery James (FR) - Vladimis 518 (CZ) - Kool Savas (DE) - Sokol (PL) - Norba (HU) - Momo (SK) and young slovak rapper called Brilliant bet, if he ever release an album, it would be classic, also in uk and fr there are plenty of talented young artists most of american mainstream rappers suck and im fed up with listening same tupac or biggie talk for more than 10 years and fed up with everybody puttin it in their lists. yes they both died (maybe that's why they are legendary) both are legends but too overrated to be on everybody's top five

Its jus the same as everybody elses list. Also i Feel B.I.G. is overrated, but hey thats his list not mine Anyway heres my list 1. Eminem Common Nas Kanye West

^^actually, kanye does write his own shit.

Kanye don't even write his own shit...how can you put him on there?? But I do believe B.I.G is a bit over rated...I will never do a Top 5.

Fuck 2pac. Okay, he was emotional? A+ for pathos. Real? Stupidest shit ever. If content was the only criteria, Public Enemy, Immortal Tech and all them would be the greatest. But, Immortal has harder lines than Pac.

    • madness

i agree.Pac n Big are super fuckin glorified for no reason.i mean i can understand.but Big only dropped 1 album while he was alive.

    • ETK

I admitted that Nas sold out. Dick riding? Seriously? It does not take a genius to state that Nas is on another level. I mean, it might, but, hey, Professor Eric Dyson did co-write a book about Nas: Born to Use Mics.

    • Roger Rabbit

If you really think about it though Nas only has 1 bashed album of his career which is Nastradamus but even Nastradamus is better than most of the crap put out today now tell me im wrong on that one?? plus most of Nas Discography is Critically Acclaimed

    • Anonymous

Nas tried to sell out but didnt work. Stop the dickriding fagets

    • Anonymous

Great list. I do believe Nas was the greatest to ever pick up a mic, in Hip Hop. However, he did sell out. After It Was Written, Nas totally went downhill as he tried to expand his brand. I love Nas, he my favorite artist ever.

Why does every rapper name Pac on their list? I know why: Not naming him would be aberrational. Pac was alright. The only reason he is worth mentioning on a top 10 is because he was probably the most popular.

  • ari

    2pac notorious b.i.g. eazy e eminem/nas the game

  • Authority

Soulja Boy XV Lil B Nas Justin Bieber swag.

  • SlimJerm

    6. Guru 7. 2Pac 8. AZ 9. Royce Da 5'9" 10. The Notorious B.I.G.

  • SlimJerm

I understand everyone has 2Pac being on their tops. With that being said, there is one poet who's still in the game and has made many more gems than Pac has, and Pac has more material. His name is NaSty NaS. That just goes to show, quality over quantity. Nas is the greatest rapper to ever do it. His flows, depths, subject matter, similes and mataphors are unmatched by any in the game. The only one that can take him out from a lyrical stand point is Eminem. But, overall, with the original criteria for emcee's, Nas takes it definitely. My top 5: 1. Nas 2. Rakim 3. Eminem 4. Big Pun 5. Big L

    • SlimJerm

^ you're a typical dude with this "dick riding" stuff. Notice how I stated facts and all you can come at me with is "Stop dickriding Nas." Come on, son. Nas didn't respond to Pac because Pac was ignorant enough to assume that Nas dissed Pac when there was no evidence at all of that taking place. Nas even said to Pac's face that there is no record even taking place. Someone like you might call that a "pussy", but I call that being a MAN and confronting the issue from the root. Watch Nas' "Behind the Music" and learn something. Get your facts straight before you try and seem "badass".

    • Anonymous

U are crazy my dude. Nas didn't respond to Pac's diss and no rapper ever connected to people like pac did. Stop dickriding Nas. He is great but not the greatest ever

    • SoBased

the fuck? no lil b? no soulja boy? no v nasty? your list is irrelevant SWAG

    • SlimJerm

You can't sit there and say that. You don't know what Pac would have done, you don't know that he would have done the Jay-Z and become a complete sellout. I'm sorry, but because Pac died that plays a toll in who's great and the greatest. You can't sit there and dictate what Pac would have or wouldn't have done if he was still alive. Pac was great, no doubt. If Pac wouldn't have died I think the game would still have maintained that essence and new cats wouldn't have a chance with flowing. Yeah, the mainstream bullshit still exists, but the only ones that can pull off mainstream and still not dumb down their shit is Shady 2.0.

    • Jay

Thats cuz 2pac died at 25 and Nas is still liviing..Makaveli was one of the greatest albums..imagine Pac never died and didnt have to rush with his music cuz he knew something was gonna happen to him..I think him and Nas would of eventually collaborated to make a album and that would of been amazing

  • SniperGuy

That's a cute list by kendrick, I like dude but that's the most obvious list I've ever seen. It's the sort of list you'd expect from someone who doesn't listen to hip-hop.

such a wack list it looks like a list made by ordinary young rap listener who just tries to respect the rappers which are "considered" and hyped as a "classics", fuck dis and for the people hatin' on Lupe or Chamillionaire just wake up Lupe got nice flow, good voice, one of the best lyrics out here, 2 classics and Lasers is also good, maybe it is pop by your opinion, but I enjoy good pop also i don't give a fuck just enjoy good music and Cham dropped 2 almost flawless albums and many mixtapes better than most of the albums ever released my list (no order) - Lupe Fiasco - Nas - Kanye West - Pharoahe Monch - Chamillionaire/Drake

    • Anonymous

he is different than anybody in the game, give me example of one rapper you can compare with him Ja Rule, Nelly, and Lil Wayne. I just named three. He's not different from anyone in the game.

    • @ andre61

You're kidding about Drake, right? He's just another hot-at-the-moment mediocre R&B/pop singer. He's nothing special; overrated and overhyped. He's not even a top 100,000 rapper; however, he's definitely top 5 overrated. Aside from that, I agree with everything you said.

    • ETK

first anonymous is a mindless faggot period

These elitist hip-hop head fags thinks drake is too soft thats why they cant relate to him. They get a hard on for hard guys I guess. Some even say the kid got no talent. WTF!! lol

    • andre61

whats wrong with drake on the list ? he is different than anybody in the game, give me example of one rapper you can compare with him, I like his flow and voice, really atmospheric beats and the his lyrics are very deep, he is whats the game been missing, maybe not TOP 5 (thats why I put cham's name first), bud definetely he should be in everybody's TOP 20 but the problem is that most of "real hip-hop" which give generic 2pac biggie TOP 5 list couldn't even understand his lyrics and persona

    • Jay

Hahaha you got drake on your list haha... 1, 2pac 2, Immortal Technique 3, Lowkey (UK rapper) Soundtrack to the Struggle top 5 cds of all time in my opinion 4, Biggie 5, Eminem

"This list by Kendrick is typical"... Thats because its as close to being correct as you can get (interpretation is subjective so I'll abstain from saying it is RIGHT) But the truth is these 5 guys (for probably a majority of rap fans proportionally) represent the best that has ever released albums. I won't even attempt to put an order to it, but these 5 artits all have more than valid cases to be in the top 5.

anybody who puts eminem in their top 5 needs to get slapped. how hard? hella hard! dude is the most overrated rapper. everybody knows selling records dont mean shit anymore. soulja boy and the new boyz could make a record and cop a milli too. eminem is the watered down and weak version of immortal technique. eminem's style is an over use of big expressions that doesnt really say much or show much talent. dont get me wrong, he's made some cool tracks, but not enough to be considered greatness. I'd put him above average at most. most TALENTED (and not in order): Notorious Big mos def (yasiin bey) jay electronica nas and 2pac out of default i know i may sound retarded when i say this, cuz this dude refuses to put out his music, but Jay electronica's act II will turn this rap game upside down!

    • yessir

    • swag

I aint hating man i'm just saying. dude aint all that talented. He's gained COMMERCIAL success, sold millions, won "awards", but that dont mean he's talented! he's got flow and emotional content, i'll give him that much. but come on dude, you tellin me immortal technique wont rip his ass apart in any category except making radio hits. fuck outa here! he's built his career off of his mom and kim, keep it real. only reason he remained on the scene is cuz of his controversial material. his subjects make him, he dont make the subject. any rapper i mentioned above will chew his ass up! just cuz he sold 83 mil dont mean shit. quality>quantity fucktard. biggie made 2 albums before he died, sold only about 18 mil, does that mean em is better? fuck no

    • Anonymous

I mean, it makes sense if you think about it. • The_Observer

He said alot of detail about Tupac...till this day, no one has been able to connect, represent nor relate to people like Pac did...that spot is vacant 16yrs later after his passing. No one injects as much emotion in their music as Tupac did...he's trully a legend of hip hop like Bob is to Raggae, like Marvin Gaye is to Soul, like Elvis is to Rock, and like MJ is to Pop Biggie yes he was witty, he had the most amazing word play i don't know any rapper where by word by word line by line is jus nice to listen to. every line of biggie was just amazingly entertaining and that made it difficult to out rhyme him. Biggie could story tell (Niggaz Bleed, Somebody's Got to Die, I Got A Story To Tell) to out rhyming another mc or set of mc's in their own style (Bone Thugs), to serenading the ladies, to dissing (who shot ya) to scripting his auto biography (Juicy) to struggle songs (house of pain with tupac) to politics and more. Biggie was jus amazingly talented and him too till this day his spot remains vacant Nas - his story telling (rewind, fetus) abilities & personification (i gave you power, project roach, fried chicken) and word play are just few examples that showcase Nas is a force to be reckoned with. Problem with Nas is his inconsistency as most of the time he features and rhymes with lightweight but famous mc's like Young Money, Rick Ross etc. just coz it makes sense financially & increases his profile influencing his sales figures but its detrimental to his reputation. Its obvious Nas will always out rhyme a Nicki Minaj, Drake, Rick Ross & many other. Nas is only lethal against another heavyweight like Canibus (Desperado 2), Killah Priest (Guns for Guns & The Saints), and Tupac (Thugs Mansion). So if Nas were to do more songs with the likes of Killah Priest, Canibus, Scarface, Chino XL, Immortal Technique, Lupe Fiasco, Royce da 5'9, Eminem, Jadakiss, Vinnie Paz, he will truly be measured accordingly but jus coz most of those rappers aint famous enough, Nas would never call on emNas would never call on a GZA, Masta Killah to come trade verses with him on his own album instead he will call on a Rick Ross just coz he is trucking in millions. Nas is a coward if you really look at it, hence why he ain't dropped no duet album with AZhe's scared AZ will likely out rhyme and out flow him. Nas just makes empty promises he never keepsdue albums with Scarface (Dr Death), with Killah Priest, with AZ, with Premo, now with Common as well as Common & Q-TipNas is a good lyricist but also the biggest joke in hip hop, and worst has a broken ear that cannot hear a good beat Jay Z - all this nigga does is rhyme about his success, so people can't really connect wit a jet fuel abuserhow many niggaz have jets Hov? niggaz is starving and you telling them you a jet fuel abuser? that you got so many watches, so many cars, the baddest bitch in the industry, a bank account fatter than Albert. if he's not boasting about his wealth then he is telling the same story about him being a drug dealer prior to hip hop or him crying about his absent pops. we skim through your music Hov coz u saying the same thing Ova and ova differently. even if you story telling on songs like (99 Problems) you still tell us you got a few dollars to bite the case so basically you saying you so filthy rich you can buy the judge, the jury the prosecutor. take note, those are Jay Z's 3 main subject matters, (success, drugs and his pops). C'mon Jay, lets hear you drop a song like 'Fried Chicken', a song like "Me & My Girlfriend" not that bullshit "Bonnie & Clyde". lets hear you drop songs like 'Fetus" by Nas, 'Nightfall", "Heavy Mental", by Killah Priest, "1 000 bars", 'Buckingham Palace' by Canibus, 'Nature of the Threat" by Ras Kass, or 'Secret Wars" by The Last Emperor? Till the day Jay can do songs like that, i am not convinced he is a heavy weight mc along with the likes of Pun, Biggie, Big L and Canibus. He is just middleweight Eminem - yeah white is dope alright, he's got story telling abilities as songs like Stan are classic, he can spit multis like no other rapper . his rhyme scheme is amazing, he can diss, he can do anything i believe but can never out rhyme a Canibus in a song together nor can he out rhyme Nas, Biggie, Chino XL, Pharaoh Monch, & Big Pun

    • Your funny

Listen don't start gettin racist but... SOME of us(black people) listen to eminem don't give him as much "props" because most of us don't relate as much. White Males do ages 16-36. 90% of the time people relate to people of the same race. I didn't say 100% so stupid people don't start trippin right away and think before you type. that is all thank you

    • georgel

eminem didnt bring white people to hip hop they were into it way before him. he may have brought some young kids who are just getting into music into it. white people listened to mc hammer for a couple years, beastie boys did, run dmc even did. eminem was a part of it but thats all, and he puts the most thought and emotion into his music which is why he is the best alive

    • Huffy

Why its true what you say em will never get his credit because hes white, but eminem aint the best but he is the only reason hip hop can sell so many records today because he brought the white market to hip hop and white people BUY music black people don't thats why there underground music don't sell cause everyone that listens to it downloads it

He had records dat inspired & uplifted the black community.

This is basically the standard top 5 list , if you asked any random group of people. the 5 most mentioned names would be these ones. Personally I wouldnt have Jay or BIG anywhere near my list , BIG didnt have enough material and I've never liked Jay outside of a few tracks here and there.

mad? Tupac was an average rapper...had a good message but was just a mess of contradictions. Biggie was top 10, real and told vivid stories...pac though? he was the lil wayne of his generation. Good message and energy on the mic but nothing else of note. I still remember how pac got butthurt after that chino xl line..chino xl would have lyrically destroyed him given half a chance

    1. Eminem (all around versatilty - diverse subjects, most flows, can do battle rapping, freestyling, incredible lyricist, can do anything really) 2. 2Pac (extreme passion and can connect with anybody regardless if they are going through what he is rapping about, good lyricist and storyteller) 3. NaS (Has the best concepts - such as Rewind, I Gave You Power, the intro to Stillmatic, etc, great lyrics, great storytelling, not consistent enough to beat Pac though) 4. Rakim (Pretty much invented lyricism, has one of the best flows ever, still better then most rappers) 5. Jay-Z/Biggie (Jay-Z started off in '96 as one of the best MCs ever, with an incredible smooth flow and some great lyrics, although ever since the 1st Blueprint his flow and lyrics have decreased in quality significantly, and Biggie was an incredible storyteller, great lyricist, flow, unfortunatly wasn't around long enough so we don't know if he would've fallen off or gotten better or what)

It feels like Rappers always throw out this generic list because if they don't people will criticize them. Eminem wouldn't make my top 20 but that's my opinion which we're all entitled to. Wish more rappers would just say exactly how they feel.

    • Anonymous

If he doesn't make your top 20 then you are either 1.) A hipster 2.) A Hip hop elitist 3.) Someone that has only heard 15% or less of his music.. Dude is pretty much unarguably top 5 but if u put him in top 10 i wouldn't have said anything... however keeping him out of top 20 come on. and rappers put out these "generic" lists because they are accurate..

Eminem in your top 20? You're retarded dude. That muthafucka has everything an MC is supposed to possess. I've never seen a rapper with so many different flows/deliveries.

    • Mu

What makes u think this isn't his honest list? If you took the average responses for all hiphop fans, you'd probably end up with this list

    • grim delarge

      cosign

  • Joe

    No Lupe Fiasco? Cmon son

  • Anonymous

At least he can back up his choices with explanations, instead of just picking them because of the clich or what have you

  • Star

KRS ONE Big Pun Pac Rakim Scarface Murs Nas Big L Slick Rick MC Eiht

  • WOW

    No Lupe? ............................................________ ....................................,.-...................``~., .............................,.-...................................-., .........................,/...............................................:, .....................,?......................................................\, .................../...........................................................,} ................./......................................................,:`^`..} .............../...................................................,:........./ ..............?.....__.........................................:`.........../ ............./__.(.....~-,_..............................,:`........../ .........../(_....~,_........~,_....................,:`........_/ ..........{.._$;_......=,_.......-,_.......,.-~-,},.~;/....} ...........((.....*~_.......=-._......;,,./`..../............../ ...,,,___.\`~,......~.,....................`.....}............../ ............(....`=-,,.......`........................(......;_,,- ............/.`~,......`-...............................\....../\ .............\`~.*-,.....................................|,./.....\,__ ,,_..........}.>-._\...................................|..............`=~-, .....`=~-,_\_......`\,.................................\ ...................`=~-,,.\,...............................\ ................................`:,,...........................`\..............__ .....................................`=-,...................,%`>--==`` ........................................_\..........._,-%.......`\ ...................................,

    • Anonymous

That does not change the fact that as an emcee he is one of the greats.

    • Anonymous

Lupe doesn't have enough material and hasn't been around enough. Plus Lasers is the most poppy album I've ever heard and FotP was pretty bad...

    • WOW

Anyone who believes Lu is wack must be mentally handicapped to some degree....

    • man

      FUCK LUPE WACK ASS

  • the list

all the mcs on the list are considered to be "classic" or the "best", but they are too overrated, I like them, but definitely they are not even in my top 20 by the way, Kendrick is in my TOP 5 out of the "new" mcs, it's a shame that his list is not more creative I would certainly pick Lupe Fiasco or Chamillionaire, both great and lyrical mcs, Ultimate Victory was the best hip-hop album I have ever heard

  • Lex

Enough with this nigga already. I mean, he's great rapper and all, but every day there's some shit about Kendrick on this site. Whether is about Detox or sumthin' else. Put out some music, man. And about the list ... i mean, it's his Top 5. I know it looks unoriginal, but these rappers are probably the best MC's in history of hip-hop.

  • stoopid

What a generic list, it's seems like if you're an mc if you don't name Tupac or Biggie in your top 5 then people will hate you or some shit. Yes, they were both great in their time, they aren't even in my top 10.

    • Anonymous

who cares if they're not in your top10? sounds like you're implying that your listing is better, and no one asked you for yours. that's why your mp3 has HEADPHONES, listen to who you please and don't worry about other people.

  • Dr Drew

lol two 3's...I'll take out Bizzy.

  • Kev

    Looks like everyone else's list.

  • Dr Drew

    That's such a typical list... Mine is: 1.Nas 2.Ghostface Killah 3.Lauryn Hill 3.GZA 4.AZ 5.Bizzy Bone Fuck 2pac and Biggie....They're not even in my top 100.

  • anonymous

    looks like my list!

  • Lilworm
