G. Dep has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for a murder that he allegedly committed in 1993.

According to the NY Post, the former Bad Boy rapper was given the lengthy sentence for the crime, which took place nearly two decades ago. “The circumstance of your being before the court now suggests to me a maturity and decency that wouldn’t have been evident at the time,” said Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Michael Obus. “It was the right thing to do, even though it landed you in the position you find yourself in now.”

G. Dep, whose real name is Trevell Coleman, walked into a Harlem precinct two years ago and admitted to shooting a man that authorities later matched to the murder of John Henkel. In the wake of the sentencing, Dep’s lawyer, Anthony Ricco, says that he admitted to the crime to clear his conscience and hopes he never regrets his actions.

“My hope is that Trevell never wavers from his decision,” he said. “Fifteen years is a long time. Fifteen years in the penitentiary for putting yourself there is an even longer time.”
