A biopic about legendary gangsta rap pioneers N.W.A. has long been in the works, but now, it appears that project is one step closer to the silver screen. New reports indicate that director F. Gary Gray is attached to the biopic titled Straight Outta Compton.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the auteur behind Friday and The Italian Job is attached to the prospective screenplay as director. Gray, who has directed a number of music videos for artists like Dr. Dre and Outkast, beat out John Singleton (Boyz N the Hood), George Tillman, Jr. (Notorious) and Elgin James for the job.

Although word isn’t final as to whether Gray will officially sign on as director, the film would find Gray reuniting with Ice Cube, who is producing the film. The two previously collaborated on 1995’s Friday and a number of Cube’s videos, including “Today Was a Good Day.”
