GZA Says Wu-Tang Clan Hasn't "Been On The Same Page In Years," Talks "Dark Matter" LP

GZA says he doesn't feel bad about the crew's inability to see eye-to-eye.

GZA is currently prepping the release of his new album Dark Matter, inspired by quantum physics and slated for release later this year. During an interview with Rolling Stone, the Wu-Tang Clan member said that the LP is a “beautiful story” about “planets, black holes, comets” and more, and how his recent visit to MIT was one of the driving forces for the project.

“I had several different ideas and concepts in my head. It's just a journey of the universe. Dark matter, dark energy,” he said. “The thing at MIT didn't really have anything to do with it. This was just something that added to it. I mean, I never went to a university and linked up with, you know, quantum and astrophysicists and things of that nature. But it's not like this is what sparked the idea for me to want to do this album.”

He also spoke on his upcoming projects, revealing that he’s beginning to write pilots and working on several scripts. He had no update on the Wu-Tang Clan reunion album, and said that even if the crew never records another song, he’s happy with what they already accomplished.

“We haven't been on the same page in years,” he said, noting that he has no hard feelings about that. “Nah. It is what it is. Sometimes that match burns out. So, no, I don't feel bad about it. It's good. I'm grateful for everything we have done throughout our careers and if there's nothing else to put out, then there's nothing to put out. I'm constantly writing and working. It doesn't stop there.”

Keep Hating Kids: All you new hip-hop fans (15-25 yr olds) have horrible attitudes about life and music. You don't even discuss the music like we did back in the day when Run DMC, Nas, Wu-Tang, Rakim, Biggy, Pac, etc. was running the game. ALL you guys do is have your little online race wars and cry about Eminem vs whoever or Jay-Z is illuminate or who's "real" or not. Worst of all you think there is one way to rap or one style to floss. You guys are too myopic, boring and ignorant to call yourselves "hip-hop" fans. It was never like this in the 80's and 90's. Black and White kids grouped up and pushed for better race relations. We were too smart to suck on the FOX news or CNN teat. This is what's frustrating the pioneers of rap music and new well rounded rap artist. You FANS, YOU FANS, have lost ALL perspective. Posted2012-04-04T18:07:59-05:00

@Anonymous for real man? With all your insinuations about how much more cultured and respectful and generally positive 'your generation' is, do you realize how hypocritical and supercilious it is to group all of todays young hiphop fans into a single generalization of online bickering, debates about who's best, illuminati conspiracy theories and percieved 'realness' of rappers? Seems to me that in your rush to defend hip-hop or your generations unrivaled love for hip-hop or whatever your point was, you may have disregarded all those traits you were attacking us for disregarding in the first place. You seek no generational unity yet cite your own generations' racial unity as evidence of your superiority as hip hop fans. You infer that you have this incredibly broad perspective that allows you to reach conclusions concerning hip hop that are beyond my generations intellectual reach, yet are too narrow minded to realize the incontavertible truth that you are mashing every young hip hop fan into an inaccurate stereotype in the same sentence. If you were assuming nobody from our generation would have the mental capacity to counter your ridiculous conjectures, as the obvious holes in your logic suggest, then it looks like I have disproven what you presented as infallible truths about my generation of hiphop fans. I can't find a single comment on this page that embodies negativity more than yours, so by all means check your brother, but check yourself first man. Defend what you used to love about hiphop, but don't attack what someone out there loves about it now, and certainly don't question the validity of someone else's opinion just because you don't understand it.

ETK just proved the previous poster. Igonrance is the almighty benefactor for this generation. Stay classy "ETK".

I'm not that dude up there, but when I first got here I actually thought you had a good perception ETK. I was definitely wrong and are not ashamed to say it. You weren't strong enough to withstand the comment hate, so you joined them. I saw that dickriding cosign you posted, your opinion your life, but you melted with that, you might as well be Yessir the 3rd and troll hard. As a person with a respectable comment, you're done here and I'm not the only one who saw that nonsense. Now if you wish to mentally spar, I'm rolling some piff, your turn.

Wu Block will sell about as many copies as K-Fed's album did. At least Gza is being honest. They had their time. It's better to look back and reflect on early success than to hold out for new classics that will never be. Even if everyone of the Wu wanted to try and duplicate 36 Chambers, today's musical landscape has changed where if Chambers was released say tommorow, it would probably flop because what sounded fresh and lyrical then, would sound weird today.

GZA drinks too much, smokes too much weed and has become an embarrassment on the mic. When his head is clear, he can still be sharp with the pen but it's a shame the DISrespect he's shown for his technique and are listening.

Hip Hop has no respect for its legends, you dont see The Rolling Stones getting ripped apart on Rock Message Boards like ya'll are doing the GZA right now, lol

    • Freddy Mercury

OH yeah go to blabbermouth.com and read there message board. you'll see every rock band get torn apart 10 times worst than what people spam in here.

  • $p|!ff90

This is the exact reason why the clan ain't on the Sam page, one dude raps about estrogen and astrophysics, couple of em are on that thug rap and then you got RZA trying to make radio pop commercial rap, of course nobody gonna be on the same page. It's great to see concept albums and rappers being creative but I don't think certain styles and concepts appeal to a whole group at the same time. Maybe I'm wrong...

Yes, you are wrong. RZA doesn't make radio, pop music. Ghost and Rae do make drug music but they have some of the best lyrics and metaphors in history.

    • Anonymous

they would be wack if they all rapped about the same shit all the time. trust.

  • Hidden By Leaves

Liquid Swords will forever be heralded as one of the greatest solo hip-hop releases of all time. With that being said, GENIUS HAS LOST IT. Watching him try to rhyme live on stage is embarrassing to me as a long time supporter. He has no breath control and can't stay on beat for shit. On their recent tour RZA was trying to punch his lines for him to keep him on beat and the nigga still couldnt spit his own classic shit well. With the exception of a few cuts, PRO TOOLS sounded boring, lazy and uninspired. Roc Marciano ran circles around him on his own shit. GZA! IF YOU ARENT MAKING LIQUID SWORDS 2 WITH RZA THEN YOUR WORD IS BULLSHIT! HANG IT UP!

    • Sensaye252

You're buggin'. Grandmasters and Pro Tools were both dope albums.

    • dockevoc

I though Pro Tools, Legend of the Liquid Sword, and Grandmasters were all very solid if not spectacular.

    • Anonymous

i saw him 2 months ago in ghent and his live performance was laaame, his studio material one of the illest but he suffers the same disease like nas, nas can't top illmatic, GZA can't top Liquid Swords...

This nigga makes Cormega look like Royce Da 5'9'' flowwise.

    • Anonymous

I agree completely. The reason that he released LS doesn't put him above criticism for a lifetime. What are dope concepts if you can't execute them?

  • Anonymous

No one has yet filled their shoes yet, there's not one good reason why there should'nt be another album, unless they really can't stand each other. We are expecting a come back after all the talk of a new album, and them getting in the studio.

  • Anonymous

He won't touch Heavy Mental, the most underrated album of all time, though.

  • Sonny James Rene

I hope Wu-Tang can put their differences aside for the sake of hip hop. I'm pretty excited about GZA's "Dark Matter" LP though. GZA makes some great music, not to mention his arguably the best lyricist of all time.

  • Anonymous

This nigga should do poetry instead of rapping. How can such a talented lyricist like him be so terrible at rapping?

  • Anonymous

This fool tries waaay too hard, get an engaging delivery before you write some smart dumb shit ever again.

Ignorance runs rampant...along with rampage of course.

    • Anonymous

Maybe he should just slur his words and speak like a jigga boo boo to please all the simple simons huh??

  • Anonymous

Where is Liquid Swords 2 with RZA beats and the collab album with Killah Preist?

  • Swag

Wu-tang fucking sucks. Who bumps that old grandpa ass bullshit nowadays? This is the YMCMB era now. Fuck these washed up niggas.

  • The MG

Wu-Tang has definitely carved their place in hip hop, there's no denying that. As much as I would love to see at least one more group album (not counting Chamber Music/Legendary Weapons type albums), there's a slim chance it might happen. But in the end, it's all good because they've put out tons of great music over the past 20 years. That being said, I wasn't feeling Pro Tools all that much. GZA just sounded bored on most of the album. Here's hoping that GZA will find that spark for Dark Matter and that he'll have more soul and energy this time. And what about Liquid Swords 2? Is that still happening?

  • Anonymous

sometimes rappers burn out..I honestly think GZA is one of them..liquid swords is one of the best hiphop albums ever though. I still youtube his vids from that album..but I guess if Rae could come back, Gza can too.. but sometimes you can just hear it in their voices..theres no fire, no motivation, no flow man...

  • yourdad

I'm definitely gonna cop this album. I don't pay much attention to shit these days but a concept album like this I think is worth checking out. The universe, planets, things like that are what people should be interested in... not reality tv, and bullshit like that. One thing I have always enjoyed about the GZA is that he was always the type of cat who thought outside the box and would drop rhymes that made you stop and think. This dude actually put thought into his music, unlike today... but that's a whole other topic... I respect him for accepting the fact that maybe Wu-Tang had their run and it's over but if that's true, then Hip Hop has been long gone.

  • dockevoc

lyrics is weak like clock radio speakers

wu tang had a great run ,hiphop seems to be over aswell oh well it was fun back when was real

Where in this article does it mention anything about mmg or ymcb?? Yet these dick riders chime in on here and get all wet talking about them. I'm not telling y'all to like Wu but niggas need to learn about the history. I started listening to hip hop more serious just prior to the mid 90's, but I listened to all of the 80's music to catch up. Niggas now are ignorant to the history, it's bananas.

GZA to has always been more underrated in Wu-tang Clan he was on alot of songs they did it was mostly meth, rae, ghost, maybe inspectah deck but maybe he just couldnt fit the structure of the song for group albums but solo wise liquid swords will always be in rotation in my car because he was hiphop at heart peace to Wu-tang clan but i think they made enough history just let your legacy be great dont tarnish it look at Outkast they seem to be headed that same way no album in almost 7 years

    • slick aka smitty

correct me if im wrong but i hope you re not saying that outkast has tarnished their legacy. your statement was worded in a way that i can t really make out what u meant by that

wu tang was the greatest thing to ever happen to hip hop, no one has or will ever match the impact they had worldwide! And they are still relevant across europe cause we respect real hip hop and didnt give in to the drizzy fag swag era we are in! All I have to say is 36 chambers, tical, ironman, liquid swords, only built for cuban linx now how many rappers/groups dropped that man classics in a row and it was raw hip hop

Ludacris is average, and hasn't innovated anything. Wu-Tang on the other hand, are the Lawrence Taylor's of Hip Hop, minus the hookers and crack.

  • Assassin221

GZA is tight but he's too out there sometimes, this is sounding like some Canibus sci-fi shit. I'm not mad, though, dude makes music for himself rather than for fans and I respect that. And it's obvious the Wu ain't what they used to be but I would still like to hear what they could cook up if they all came together again. It won't be the same but it shouldn't be 20 years later.

    • Anonymous

I guess the question is, is it still worth it to get all those guys together and split profits so many ways and you know all they could sell is possibly a couple hundred K if that...

GZA ain't for you tight jean wearing little boys. GZA does grown man stuff and does not make it simple for your little brains. We need another Wutang album, i know Rae is all for it and feels that them splitting up hurt the group. Ghostface has been in these interview calling for it Most of them brothers are mcs which apart from the obvious.... experimenting with music, should not have gone dolo. It's been almost 4 years they should be waving that flag again with each member participating as a general without letting RZA be the brain child of the whole project, because clearly there was alot of dissatifaction in the group. Without taking anything away from the founding member. To me it seems a shame to let something go to waste after that dud of an album and most of the members lending a hand on both the rae albums.
