Tyler, the Creator Responds To Odd Future's Predicted Top Five Debut

Tyler, the Creator says it's "awesome" that Odd Future's "OF Tape Volume 2" will land in this week's top five despite getting very little television or radio support.

A quick glance at Billboard magazine’s Hot 200 albums chart reveals a bit of an anomaly among the expected big sellers such as The Hunger Games soundtrack and Adele’s 21. Odd Future is currently expected to land in the top five spot with estimated sales of 40,000 copies of their proper major label debut OF Tape Vol. 2. In April of 2010, the collective released “The Odd Future Tape” via their Tumblr page, but Vol. 2 marks their first group effort since inking a distribution deal with Sony last year.

NOT ONE SONG ON THE RADIO, NOT ONE VIDEO ON TV, BUT WE SOME HOW GOT DEBUT NUMBER 5 ON THAT BILLBOARD CHART EVERYONE CARES ABOUT. AWESOME!

As his response via Twitter points out, Odd Future’s two videos “Oldie” and “NY (Ned Flander)” have not been in heavy rotation on MTV or any other video music outlet. However, Odd Future is currently enjoying increased visibility via their Adult Swim show “Loiter Squad” and the opening of pop up shops across the country.

that's bullshit, adds for that were all over the internet, i.e. you tube where it was on the side of every page and in the pre-roll of most videos for like a week

For the most part, compilation albums rarely sell well, mainly because nobody wants to hear a collective of songs w/ little flow to the their order, and there's always at least one person on the shit you really don't wanna hear. Plus, when you sell records, most of the profit goes back to the label for promotion; putting niggas on TV & in commercials isn't cheap. MMG's Self-Made only 58,000 in their 1st week with promo. So I see what dude is saying, 40,000 people bought their shit off love, which is pretty cool.

LOL @ people celebrating selling 40K copies of a record Lowered expectations like a motherfucker

You gotta realize this; the album leaked two weeks in advance, no singles, no airplay, no promotion (outside the internet), it's a fucking compilation album, AND it still debuted at number 5. That's a fucking accomplishment imo, especially when you got super popular and overrated artists like Diggy Simmons selling 20k first week.

again.....most of their fans are young and savvy enough to download the album illegally. Which is why you have millions of youtube views but 41,000 sold. How is this not making any sense to you two?

Real talk. Theres no excuse for the millions of youtube views and low album sales. If your a gimmick, you sell big like a gimmick. If you sell low with a gimmick, don't front like your underground hip hop or real.

to me frank ocean needs to seperate himself from odd future and focus on putting some music out. his nostalgia mixtape was some hot shit. i can t say the same for the rest of the crew member s solo projects. cats don t understand that when you re hot u have to monopolize off of it. he doesn t drop enough music to stay relevant and i think he has the potential if he gets with the right producers to drop a monumental album.

  • bkstylz

40,000 is pretty impressive when you consider most of their fans probably illegally downloaded the album

40,000 records is bad...And they got to split the money from that between a bunch of people...Dayum

  • Jacc

How the fuc they 40K and be on the top 5? If this 1999 they wouldn't be on the charts. Record sales are fucced up

like I said, they would have been fine. I am 36 and I've been a part of this hip hop culture since back in the day when UTFO was hot. I think Jigga is the GOAT, Nas is the lyrical king....and Odd Future is talented as fuck.

^^^^^^^^^^^ They wouldnt have been accepted, bottom line, want proof, go see how many Odd Future fans you can find who are in their late 20's - early 30's

    • Anonymous

I won't take your word for it. I would have been listening to them. Tyler has skills and charisma....that shit sells homie, Earl is the truth too. Those dudes would be fine. They would clearly have their haters, but they would have carved out their own lane.

    • Anonymous

^^^^^^ GTFOH I was in 10th grade in 99, there werent any goofy black skateboarders who rapped back then, these kids would've gotten laughed off the stage, take my word for it

    • Anonymous

^^ that's probably not...they aren't for everyone, but the core group have talent and they would have had plenty of fans in 99.

    • Anonymous

If it was 99 Odd future would have gotten laughed off the stage, lol

    • Miles

if it was 1999 their sales would have probally been well above 40k

  • Anonymous

It speaks more for how bad the market is now, how the fuck do you sell 40K in a week and land in the top 5, lol, I still remember back when motherfuckers who sold 40 K didnt even make the top 30

    • Mr Flamboyant

Great point. 40K would get you laughed at for real in the proper era. But now if you aren't buying multiple copies of your own CDs (cough) Birdman (cough) (cough) Jay-Z (cough) then you aren't selling much of anything.

    • Anonymous

this. nigga be downloading and shit

  • Anonymous

i hear rella on the satellite radio like every day fucking liar

    • Mr Flamboyant

Anonymous is a certified dumb ass. Two simple and separate things, lass ass nigga. I'm not a fan of these cats either. But damn if I let stupidity get away scott free.

    • hippaToDaHoppa

Not the same thing. They can play stuff on satellite that they can't/won't play on terrestrial (mainstream) radio. Not even an OF fan. Just stating facts.

  • YESSIR

RASHAD PHILLIPS NOT BAD NICE TO POINT OUT THEY ARE STILL DOING SHIT THAT IS VISIBLE EVEN THOUGH THEY NOT GETTING THAT RADIO OR MTV PLAY. TITLE WAS NOT MISLEADING EITHER
