The Roots' ?uestlove Gives An Update On Jay Electronica's Album

Jay-Z says Jay Electronica's album is his "favorite record of 2012," but lacks singles.

During his interview with The Champs, drummer and The Roots’ member ?uestlove gave a brief update on the status of Jay Electronica’s album. According to ?uestlove, Jay-Z referred to Electronica’s album as his “favorite record of 2012” but was concerned with the fact that so far the album has no singles.
“Actually Jay, Sean Carter, has the record,” ?uestlove explained in the interview which was posted on RapRadar.com. “Listens to it constantly. Say it’s his favorite record of 2012. He says it has no singles on it though, but it’s his favorite record…Jay wants a single.”
Despite the update from ?uestlove, Jay Electronica has remained relatively quiet about the status of his album.
Later in the interview ?uestlove spoke with The Champs about taking part in rehearsals with Jay-Z and how the rapper would have to recite his lyrics several times to familiarize himself with them again.
“Oh yea, he needs his lyrics printed out…Well, cause Tariq told me that an emcee can only really truly hold like maybe 30 songs in his head,” said ?uestlove.

Doubl Negative & Optimus Rhyme just summed it up. Does anybody realize how terrible most "singles" sound. The album must be extraordinary just for the fact that he didn't feel a need to dumb any tracks down. cheers.

Well with that being said, This is a must see, Copy the link http://youtu.be/OxVBn0zi6pw?hd=1

WOW!!!!! You know this album gone be good, jay never said j cole's album was gonna be that good and honestly it wasn't but for him to come out and say this shits hot, makes me wanner hear it that much more ROC NATION

  • Anonymous

hov gotta pay the bills.record labels exist because of record sales,if he flops who do you think will pay for his next albums donald trump?

  • Doubl Negative

Pre Ready to Die, rap records didn't have "singles". Critical Beatdown, Breakin' Atoms, Illmatic, 36 Chambers and all of the other classics by Tribe, PE, EPMD, Gang Starr and Cypress Hill didn't feature incongruous r&b singles on a hardcore hip-hop palette. They were still lauded by the critics, got airplay, shifted units and satisfied any discerning hip-hop listener. I don't see why a major hip-hop release in 2012 can't use the same ethos. The few Jay El tracks I've heard were all impressing, and the fact they lack choruses made me appreciate them more. What's most infuriating about Jigga's term "single" is the insinuation that hip-hop is no longer for street dudes, Brothers, or anyone who appreciates the art form in its purest sense. White middle-class girls and homosexuals are now hip-hop's main target, so "singles" have to pique their interest. This has had a detrimental affect on our music, because rappers are being forced to make music neither real rap fans nor themselves have any any interest in. Hopefully, this LP is released untarnished, and we don't witness another Papoose/Saigon fiasco.

  • Optimus Rhyme

F#$k a single. And fu#k Hov's mentality of chasing a hot single like everyone else in the industry. Try being a trailblazer and go in the opposite direction. Jiggy singles is not Jay Electronica. Don't give us something that he's not. If the album is that good it will sell itself without a corny single. People have been waiting years to hear this guy's project.

  • ROCNATION

Of course Jay Z is worried about a single. He is so commercialized now that it makes me sick. Real hip-hop is what we want to hear, we don't want singles. I knew this would happen with Jay Electronica being on Roc Nation. Jay Electronica should sign to Rhymesayers, seriously he could put out this album that the world needs to hear. Its about the message not how many records you sell. PLEASE PLEASE don't sell out on us JAY!

  • IDAHO

Fuck a single. That's what Jay did with J Cole when they released that watch track, that paula abdul sampled travesty and so on. Who gives a damn about a single? The real heads will still cop that shit. I would rather that than some burb kid that bumps radio friendly albums all day...

  • mikempt

One single doesn't hurt Jay Elec. it only helps him. HE deserves to be known and a single will get his name out there. NOw if I know Jay Elec. (which I don't, personally) I know that his way of attacking a single will be different. Soo I'm anxious.

  • Jack

"Real recognize real, stick to your deal. Try to make a cool mill off the single With that ringtone appeal In 3 years, youll be nil" Since I heard Jay Elec signed to the roc I've been worried about his style changing. As said below Jay needs to stop trying to mold Elec and let him do what he does. He didnt get the fan base he has for no reason. With an artist of his caliber needs to be introduced to the world just as he is. No poppy single, no gimics or extra shit. Just raw. I remember Guru talking about how Elec made him believe in Hip hop again and that hes gonna keep a close eye on him. Either way I've been counting the days until this album drops. Its the only one Im planing on buying this year. And all you 16 year old youngins hanging off the sack of Young Money will bow when this CD comes out.

Look in other words jay wants something that really sounds like everything else out there. If the album is that good, and he's been busy on this joint for years and you can't find anything to throw out there to draw people in, well you really need to promote Jay Elect how he is, and not try and distance him from his core . It takes time to create a limitless fan base, promote some real hip hop for a change and don't try to change and commercialise the sound.

    • The ROC

Man there ain't no stopping to the Jay-Z bashing... He's suggesting a single IN ORDER for the rest of the album to be heard, he's not trying to change him one bit! If he wanted to do so, this album wouldn't have been in the works for so long... Same thing with The Roots' Undun, Hov just told them to do their thing and so they did, it came out quite close to being a classic... Hov respects good music for sure, any album needs some type of single in order for it to be viable, bottom line

  • Mike " SEENIK " Melendez

Look what happens when you sign to Joc Nation, he got rappers that sweat his strap lol!

  • illmontic

Ok lemme get this straight..Jay-Z has Jay Elect's whole album in his possesion, says it's the best joint of 2012 but won't release it because there's not a "single" for the radio??? F*ck that! Every album not for the radio, that's what u signed J Cole for. Jay claims to be the "Mike Jordan of the mic recording" exactly! a horrible owner just like he is..Roc Nation gon be as irrelevant as the Bobcats if he hold that sh*t back.

  • BrownSuga

I know the music industry has changed for the worse but what is wrong with an album not making a radio? I mean who many radio songs did Wu have or NWA? Missing the days when your album was your album and if you had a buzz and fanbase and did some tour dates you could put your album out.

  • black melancholy

i fuckin hate jayz. i don't respect any nigga that signs with that label. and i been fuckin with this nigga electronica since his myspace days when he was putting up songs there. that was before just blaze and exhibit a and c. this nigga disappointed me with his unwise decisions. #boycott roc nation.

    Jay electronica is Killah Priest.

  • seed561

He should like with Mannie since he cool with GOOD Music & New Orleans native...He'd bring out a different side of bruh...Fresh on a hook would be FRESH new sound and just kick his regular style on the verse I.E. Wayne Go DJ & Bottom of the Map @DACHILDOFHIPHOP

    • Anonymous

And I'm presuming that "different side" would be the southern side that is acceptable at the moment? This is not that balance most of you were screaming that the music is and that Erick Sermon was wrong. Next someone will say JayE should have Ross pick a beat for him.

  • Anonymous

Jay Electronica is one of the most overrated rappers I've ever had the displeasure of listening to.

  • ASEE

Jay Electronica better maintain his integrity. I KNOW that he has it in him to make a classic album, but this whole "you need singles" mentality is just going to lead to bullshit watered down material that sounds nothing like the other tracks on the album. Fuck that shit.

  • lexheartzx3

jay-z is fucking up, let Jay Elect drop the album fuck a single this is ground breaking hip hop not that J.cole garbage you forcing down the people's throat fuck a single drop Act II the fan's have waited long enough.

    • UGK4Life

B, that's just the way things are in the majors. Roc Nation is Jay Z's 3rd record label, so he does know how to sell records. Jay still runs with the obviously successful formula of a heavily burned single on the radio before a release. Nobody said Jay Z was in the best interests of producing perfect albums.... we all know what Jay Z really likes.

  • CHOWMAMA

*shawn carter, not "sean carter"... tut tut hip hop dx, cant even spell the arguably-most-famous-rapper-ever 's name right, smh

dont care just drop the fuckin album

  • YESSIR

    • NOSIR

Please shut the fuck up cousin YESSIR u call J.Cole's singles Can't Get Enough, Work Out, and Nobody's Perfect corny man cousin I swear your such a stupid DUMBASS sometimes those singles that J.Cole put out are radio hits and are still played over and over again all day everyday also one of his singles is Platinum face it those singles are FIRE! so stop with all the lies about J.Cole needing Trey Songz, Drake, and Missy Elliot to get big hits he choose them to be on his album that he produce himself and went certified Gold where as lame overrated fake ass Drake needs almost every popular artist to be on his garbage ass albums beside we all know Lil Wayne and Birdman are responible for well over half of Drake's record sells as well as Nicki and Tyga to Lol that's sad for YMCMB no talent what so ever ya'll are just the most popular label right now that's all ya'll have going for u without this your nothing we the ROC NATION unit have natural talent that ya'll will never match the members of our label are selfmade artist that don't depend on the CEO Jay-Z to make us hot that's right Jay-Z signed us but he let's us build your own successful music careers and win over huge fans as well as having huge record sales to follow and that's whats us the ROC NATION crew better than the YMCMB crew we are leaders while ya'll are followers and Jay Electronica's album is coming out so stop fronting like it's not just cause it's has taken a very long while to do so it's going to come out soon cause Jay Electronica is hungry and ready to give us some real hip hop music cause u lame ass YMCMB nigga's are killing the rap game with this pop/rap garbage I damn shit Drake should change the name of his album Take Care to Can't Bare that was one of the most horrible albums of all times so YMCMB step down cause Jay-Z, Jay Electronia, Kanye West, and J.Cole are running this rap game from now on we are the real faces of Hip Hop while ya'll are over hyped fakes nigga's ya'll will never be better than us cause we the SHIT! 28 LETTERS FOR U ROC NATION DREAMVILLE GOOD MUSIC

    • Kilanoiz

Well Jay's baby mama is Erykah Badu, plus he's tight with diddy, so theirs two names for you right there

  • BFlat-88

Do i have to do all the thinking around here. All Jay-z has to do is take 3 songs from Electronica's album. Give 1 to Kanye, 1 to JustBlaze, and 1 to Dr. Dre, and have them remix the tracks...Then put Jay Cole on one track, Drake on another track, and oohh guess what, you Jay-z on the third track..and there go, your damnnnn single. 3 of them. And finally make those 3 songs the bonus material on the album.....P.S. I'll be looking for my check in the mail.

    • Anonymous

And Bflat's comment isn't that balance either naming Drake and Cole, the status quo of today's radio play.

    • Anonymous

Keep waiting for that check bro, that was HORRIBLE A&R-ing. Cole and Drake features? Mismatch. Just Blaze? Who do you think produces the majority of JayE's music? Remember the Jay's have a song called "Shiny Suit Theory"? Your fired Bflat-88

    • Convey

Great-only onne problem with that, being the fact that J Cole is shit in comparison to Jay Elec and Drake is wack point blank. Add the fact that Dre hasn't really been on point lately with beats and all his good beats are most likely going towards Kendrick or (lol) Detox. So, explain, why would one want such features on what is anticipated to be a classic album? Oh, right, yeah, publicity, gotcha.

  • mario.toney

it doesnt need singles it needs good promo...pay the damn ready to play the best song like everybody else does....lots of cd do well with no singles..nowadays

  • Mr Flamboyant

And this is why signing with Roc Nation was the worst damn move possible. He needs a single in order to put it out, huh. (shaking my head in disgust) Man I'll leave this alone. Just pick a fucking song and roll with it. Let it speak for itself. Shit all the damn "singles" he's "made" have sucked as of late for how long? (Show Me What Ya Got, Otis, Niggas In Paris for example) Just release the album you 10% ass bloodsucker. Camel looking style biter hip hop pillaging bitch.

    • black melancholy

co sign mr flamboyant. im glad im not the only one that feels this way.

    • Mr Flamboyant

Nope. See Sigel, Beanie; Freeway; Bleek, Memphis The nigga Jigga is just a constant cornball coon. Record spins? Really? Niggas that matter don't even listen to the radio. Everything is so much internet and satellite radio now as far as cats that still matter so to speak. i.e. niggas that's not wrapped up in these wack trends, record sales vailidity nonsense, etc. Man here's a good example: Roc Marciano - Marcberg. I came across that LP simply off of the review on this site (one of the last few things done well here truthfully). I don't listen to the radio. I remembered Roc from back on the cut with Busta, Rae, and Ghost. That LP didn't have a single. But lo and behold, that damn LP was fantastic...heck some of the best shit to be released in the past few years. For all intended purposes, Raekwon's OBC4L Part II didn't have a damn single. New Wu was just a song picked pretty much and it rocked. The Cuban (Part I) was just the exact same. The point is this: Albums were crafted as albums. Singles were always picked. It was never a period where it was "well we have to create a single in order to get buzz for this cd and then we can sell it finally". NO. Works of art were simply released. Now you had a song picked just to get the fanbase hyped for the release but still...it was never about "creating a single". If you had great songs...if you had great music...then shit. Once again, this camel looking faggot shows why his an asshole and a shiest nigga altogether. Just release the album for Christ's sake. Heck make Shiny Suit Theory the single. It was released. Now release the album. Dumb bitch. Nas' latest song basically shows you how to do it. Pick a proper song from it, let it ride, then go ahead and get it crackin. That's how it was always done... Nowa days it isn't.

    • Anonymous

In all fairness Mr Flamboyant I would say this probably is a difficult decision for Hov, Jay Electronica (correct me if I'm wrong) is the first non-commercial rapper he's ever had.

    • Convey

@JOE6PACKNCGBOR336 Yeah but his music may have been dumbed down to the point where he would be patronized by two year olds. If not that then his image and message would just have not run smoothly with the bunch of ass clowns over at YMCMB. Patience.

    • Anonymous

exactly forcing somethign that isn't part of the artist corrupts the product. Jay's wants him to make some radio shit so he going to release this single and all of us are going to be like what the fuck is this shit just give me the album. like j cole, i mean i was pretty dissapointed with that shit, album was not aggressive what so ever.

    • JOE6PACKNCGBOR336

rocnation was a badd move imagine if dude was a YMCMB artist this shit wouldve had 300 comments
