Nicki Minaj Addresses Selling Out By Making Pop Songs

Nicki Minaj explains that she's just adding on to her brand and isn't turning her back on her Hip Hop roots.

Nicki Minaj created a stir with the release of her past few records, most recently confusing her Hip Hop fan base with the pop-friendly "Starships. " During an interview with Hot 97's Funkmaster Flex, the Young Money rapstress explained that she hopes people know that she's smart enough to calculate each move.

"I would hope that people know at this point that I'm smart enough to know what I'm doing all the time. But I guess they still kind of waiver. I always intended on putting out something urban after 'Starships,' because I knew 'Starships' was a monster. I didn't feel the pressure. To be honest, I feel really, really good. I feel that Hip Hop cares enough that they have something to say. I remember when I was hoping that someone had something to say about me on the radio, or cared enough."

Nicki, who also premiered her Lil Wayne-assisted cut "Roman Reloaded," said that the pop songs have more reach than her urban songs and that she's not going to apologize for making music for the masses.

"Maybe it would be a problem if I couldn't deliver records like 'Roman Reloaded,' but I can. I write my own lyrics. Once again, I write my own lyrics. So it's never a problem. Whatever I feel, I can write, I can create it. So I'm good. I think people sometimes get blown away by the magnitude of the pop stuff, because the pop stuff, it reaches everywhere and then I feel like my Hip Hop fans or Hip Hop culture starts getting a little bit afraid that I'm going to leave. But this is who I am. I'm not going to change - I'm just adding on to my brand. And if you don't understand that, then it's probably why you don't travel and you don't see the world and I probably can't even have a conversation with you anymore."

Truffle Butter is FIRE. Congrats to Nicki, she will be gold in 3 weeks. Why can't IA go gold?

I'm so disappointed in you Onika. I really am. You ain't being true, your just trying to sell. And honestly i understand, you got to make your paper, but let me tell you this, your time is limited. So do you want to be in the limelight as some one who was "keeping up with the jones" or do you want to put out music THAT GOT YOU FAMOUS. Don't be trying play us, your fans. I feel betrayed and played. Your talented , but honey, this aint no damn broadway show, this is music. Before, your music was inspiring and was better than most of those woman who rapped about nothing but sex. You on the other hand was fun, but kept it true. However, once Super Bass blew up, you changed, and you changed big time. No Bueno chica. Don't think that you going back to old nicki will make you seem like Lil Kim. People are always going to compare. But your not her. She was a damn slutty ass hoe. Your not. I hope you realize that you need to just be yourself. The industry changes people, you just need to see the light again.

Nicki showed her true colors at the Grammys with her satanic performance. People need to realize that there are spiritual forces at work here. Here is an article that breaks the performance down and its link to Lady Gaga and Beyonce http://beginningandend.com/nikki-minaj-beyonce-cult-demon-possession/

  • nicki mirage

    1. LIL KIM smokes her career with just the interlude fucking biggie on READY TO DIE! LMAO 2. minaj!!!!!!! is UGLY 3. Her songs sound like mix tape material.

  • YAWN

Her time is OVER! Tranny minaj is NOTORIOUS W.A.C.K.!!!!!!!!

  • U guys are stupid.

So many of you don't understand that she is reaching out to more than one type of people. I don't know about you guys but if i was in her position i would not stay in one area i would expand. She is smart to do this because not everyone likes rap, so making different songs allows her to reach out to others and get more jobs, recognition, etc, etc. At the end of the day rap can go only to a certain distance, but reaching out to others allows her to be more well known.

  • shell517nj

Its the new sing-a-long rap. so hip hop fans get ready.

  • NONO

"And if you don't understand that, then it's probably why you don't travel." What? It's like she doesn't realize that her fans are little girls.....And it's not hip hop fans that are afraid of pop, we grew up on pop, it's that she is afraid of being too hip hop.

Because he fully understands that you haters would rather spend time talking/discussing about artists you dont like the supporting artists you do

  • Real Queen in this bish

bish shut the phuck up. Your travellin has got you OUT OF TOUCH with your hiphop roots. & now you stragglin pop shit because thats all you know & see around you. You an actress so you fooln ppl on the daily. Superficiality is out of control, you dont eem know how to keep it real anymore. That was apparent in your grammy perfomance because YOU DIDNT care about the music you just care about looking good. That was so shit, ppl who previously lied to themselves not to cringe when they heard you on the radio, decided they were going to face the truth & CRINGE when they hear your nursery, nasally obnoxious voice. Not to mention you all duck mouth because you have a hype machine behind you. YOU WANT BRATS TO BE YOUR FANS, dont expect the illest to be dumb like them & buy your scripted excuses. your time is over soon. You coulnt just do your shit playfully could you? Naw you had to go act a fool to the point ppl HAVE to be like yo this aint right for out culture, growth, children's minds, & CERTAINLY NOT FOR HIPHOP.

this bitch sold out with he turrets and all smh makes me sickcant stand ymcmb and will for now on ban all its artists including busta

  • iamhiphop

@Ole_Head its not about the money. It's about the MUSIC. And Nicki is putting out crappy music.

  • Mylie

Mr Flamboyant: This is so damn sad as much as it is stupid. First off...So Icy Boi...I hope you choke to death with your gag reflex doesn't work and let you know. Second, this broad just did two things: 1. Ether herself by admitting she sold out. 2. Disrespect and insult her own fans' (these idiots) intelligence. 3. Just set herself up for immediate failure. I really don't understand this record label. It's one of the worst ran damn near ever. They seem to capitalize on stupid trends and ignorance. Music is not good. Music really has no substance. Music is hella repetitive. But all of that plays into the demographic's attention span and all for the most part today. I can't knock Baby and Slim for doing their thing and capitalizing off of this...They're businessmen. But my God....when people such as this bitch and that other bitch (i.e. Drake) always try and give these asanine reasons and illogical logic statements to validate that bullshit that they do when we all know it's straight cookie cutter material and cash grabs...Please. Spare the world. This shit is sad. And stupid. -------------------- ^^^^ This is sum REAL sh1t.

    • Anonymous

I feel bad for you, Ole_Head. Not!!

    • Ole_Head

Mylie you make my point When we stop buying her albums because they're trash and we can't relate and we think the content is garbage she has a whole range of other fans that will continue to buy it... Everyone in the game thought Andre3000 was a sellout for his singing album yet every feature he was on he murc'd...niggas damn near cried when he said he wasn't getting back with big boi so fans come and go Lauren hills is certified crazy and has one classic hip hop cd....NOTHING ELSE yet fans line up at the thought of seeing this severely mental woman to get a chance to see if she still has it Neither I nor you can say her music is totally garbage or the greatest...we just have our opinions. She's still making music and still got people buying it and where I'm at in the world right now.....there's young white kids singing stupid hoes like we used to sing "hey young world"

    • Mylie

Bu her true hardcore fans are NOT riding with her! thats the point! because they can see right what shes trying to do! theres no substance or artistic integrity when you do a song like ''starships'' and all these other half ass songs. what the fuck is up with nyggas like you? We should respect her now so she can sell out and get that pop money? her own fucking fans don't even like it. they are s1tting on her big time. yes she will gain new fans. but they are just normal boyband loving pop fans who don't even like hip hop but will love katy perry records. its not about the fucking money!!! its about the MUSIC KID!! shes on her way as a sell out.

    • Ole_Head

You make as much money as you can for as long as you can before your time is up...period. If he puts out trash music that (we) don't like yet (someone) buys it and she continues to be successful good for her. If she puts out hardcore quality lyrical rap and stays true to her hood then she becomes respected in the hood and the hip hop community and can walk anywhere and they say "that bitch Lil Kim.....I mean nikki was hot" FUCK THAT! I'll say it again....she does not want to be Lil Kim....ultra successful but no where near as financially successful as she could have been. People care what other people think too much....make that money and your TRUE fans and new fans will ride with you no matter what.

  • acemoney

i respect nicki she getting her money. no different than ross rap pin bout selling dope that he never did before.

    • NONO

...and how do you know what Ross has never done...C.O. or not down in Florida I know of very few people who will say he never had another hustle..You kids and the internet...

  • AlexRmF

Bitch attitude... I'll do the stuff that gets me more money no matter if I like it or not, if the money's there, it's justified.

    • Anonymous

You're clearly missing the point. Nicki put out a HORRIBLE pop song while claiming to be hood. That's kind of a contradiction. Like I said, I'm not saying that Nicki should just do hood music; I'm just saying do HIP-HOP. And as for Mos Def, Andre 3k, Cee-Lo, and Common, they've experimented with other genres of music and kept it hip-hop. They've never did a horrible song like Starships. Nicki, however, just straight-up stop doing hip-hop songs and is now doing the same crappy dance-pop music as Lady Gaga, Rihanna, and Katy Perry. There's nothing genius about following a trend. Yes, she will get some new fans and get more money, but, as a hip-hop artist, do you REALLY want to be remembered for doing crappy pop music in the long run? This is like when KISS, rock legends, did a disco record back in the 70s. Business-wise, it made them more money, but music-wise, they lost respect from rock fans. And if you claim not to be a fan, then why defend her?

    • Ole_Head

Yall are sheep........really upset that this hip hop woman put out pop music AND the websites.....the HIP HOP websites provided access to it so you got mad. LMAO!!! ven if it's true and she spit in the face of her fans....if you were a fan then I guess you wouldn't be one any longer right?....it's like these artist efeect you people personally when 9 times out of 10 all you did was buy a cd...thats IF you actually bought it LMAO! She's not a member of your family, didn't save you from death, have your child, give you money or suck your dick. GROW UP! Yall are STANS!!! I only posted because I thought from a marketing aspect, a money making aspect, a long term future she was a genius. Not a fan, never bought or downloaded her shit...thought she was overrated and the Jean greys and 3DNATEE of the world were much better MC's. A few have had some arguments and I respect them but to just keep saying "but she's suppose to be hip hop"?.... MOS DEF made a rock and roll album...where's the outraage CEELO used to be Goodie Mob...where's the protest Andre 3000 sings.......where's the torches Common made electric circus....anyone hear that shit? Stop putting people on pedestals, so when they fall off of them it doesn't effect yall so personally. What I eat don't make you shit - Jay Z

    • Anonymous

You're missing the point. If you're gonna be a hip-hop artist, do hip-hop. I'm not saying stay in the hood and make hood music about murder and drugs; I'm saying don't put out a Katy Perry-sounding pop record, especially when you claim to be hood. By doing records like this, Nicki's just spitting in the faces of her fans. Yeah, she'll get new fans, but those fans are just sheep, following whoever's popular.

    • Ole_Head

I'm saying stop worrying or letting other people influence what the fuck you do, how you act, the music you make. You're saying don't sell out....stay in the hood and make the type of music I want to hear and only me and my niggas or whatever because that's what "I" like. Because an artist made a cd that you could relate to that means all of their content and beat selection and lyrics and features should be in line or on par with what the masses like? If she dropped from the label, went independent, made pop music and made twice as much money enough to take care of her kids kids would you niggas even care?.....nope.....because she'd be a sellout????? Crabs in a barrel...thats why WE never get anywhere

    • Anonymous

So you're saying that every rapper out there should sell out to make money? That's the most idiotic shit I've heard. Money can't buy respect.

    • Ole_Head

You do realize this whole country must be bitches then because PLENTY people go to work at a job they don't like and do things they don't want to do just because it makes them and their family money. Someone explain to me how again....someone can make money and be successful but is disliked because YOU think she should stay true to hip hop. Most of our rap pioneers are broke now....still living in the hoods they tried to get out of....or they made it, blew it and are back in the hood. Fuck that...make money, support your family and ensure those around you grow up better and with more than you did. Fuck keeping it real....successful societies place emphasis or more important shit

  • Guess What

This plastic bitch is a joke. The real problem is the media & her gay label have been gassing her up. She think she can't be touched. Another problem is her gimmick outweighs the talent she doesn't have. She has no substance in her music, you can tell by the flop singles she just put out recently. She doesn't inspire at all. Now all of a sudden she got on a couple of planes & thinks she's doing something special. This bitch acts like she invented female hip hop. Nicki would have never made it in the 90's. She's nothing but a money grubbing trick who sold her soul. Why does Nicki act like ppl don't know she sucked & fucked her way up to where she is. *looks for secret sex tapes they have of her*

I'll let a classic gem from Scarface express my sentiments on this shit. "The ruler is back, Cause there's too many pussies out here making bullshit records and ruining rap, I gotta check this whole game, Cause n!gg@s is out here listening to record labels bitches instead of doing their thing, I'm a real n!gg@, A street n!gg@ until it's done with, And I can never let you talk me into doin' some dumb shit, Like sellin' out, To move a few more units, Just keep me in the ghetto because the hood stay truest, You fuck around and cross the other side of the tracks, You catch you a brick and you can't come back, I'ma stick to the facts, And fuck it if I don't go 2, The homies will know that Face stayed true"

  • Ole_Head

Oh.............and the fact that the comment about traveling has gotten so many people in their feelings seems to indicate that she's right. Travel away from home from time to time and realize its not all about where you're from....it's where you're trying to get to. Like how do you get mad at someone from the hood "Doin it"...making money...LEGIT!, feeding their family etc....hate! Andre3000 aint rapping with big boi no more Mos Def is no longer... The 4hrsmn broke up (even though they were never REALLY together) LMAO! Whitney is dead Canibus sucks Wu Tang is washed up Grow up...shit has changed

    • Ole_Head

That girl.... Well put. So now you do just as they'd do in the stock market. The money you invested in that brand turns out to be a bust...or a likely bust. So you SELL. Invest your money in some new jalepeno cheese...........or you wait it out and see if that bitch turns into an "APPLE" Hope you got the metaphor

    • That girl wanna give it up watch her

Yes change is inevitable, anywhere on Earth, anytime. We aint hatin on the change. We embrace it. WHAT WERE NOT OKAY WITH is the pretense of that change. It is the corrupting minds & capitalising on the IDEA OF HIPHOP as opposed to putting out quality hiphop (progession of our culture) Arrite lemme put it down for everyone easily. Lets say jalapeno cheese has been a favourite for a while at a grocery store. A cheese company wanting to make $ off this interest of ppl produces cheap cheese with artifical jalapeno cheese. Cost effective & new, ppl try it but start to hate it due to the poor quaity of it. Some then start to question if they liked Jalapeno cheese to begin with. Confused, & fearful that other cheeses mite be same even if their ingredient label say otherwise, ppl now opt for pepper cheese. (Chris Tucker voice) "Do you understand the words that are comin outta my mouth"

Hate to admit it but she's right. Yall want her to stay true to hip hop but hip hop isn't true to anyone...make the money, support your family and make it better for your children when they grow up. Lil Kim kept it real and may have more respect but damn near everyone talks shit about her and how she fell off and so on....but oh yeah...she kept it hip hop GTFOH!

    • Anonymous

Thats very true. However, it does not take away from the fact that her gimmicks are far greater than her actual talent and her label makes her think shes way better than she is. When she falls, shes gonna fall hard.

  • problem/problema

Wait till she brick and she come back around the real hip hop heads talking about "I'm bringing it back to the Old Nicki"..Fuck outta here bitch you sold your soul to be a pop star but just as fast as they embrace you they will turn on you and the people you can no longer have conversations with are the ones you gonna beg to have in your corner again.Fake ass GaGa...You are not original. The only time I will ever pay attention to you again is when you show your tits and make a porno...

    • Um

Pop does have more reach since it reaches white people which are the majority of Americans and white people always buys songs and albums no matter how bad it could be. It reaches parents who don't listen hip-hop or kids that are to young for hip-hop and reaches people internationally.

  • John

She has an irresistible star power. I'd love to hate her but I hate that I love her still even if she does (and I'm not saying she does) abuse her star power. Critics probably need not hate though because if there's is something artistically you crave seek another artist or make your own song. I like it when recording artists attempt another recording style. I'm not blasting her music but her sound can't be denied she sings she has star attraction quality but based on bars basically I'd prefer better however I don't cage an artists on their limitations but I credit and take notice to what she does well

    • Anonymous

YO. DUMBASS. HIP HOP DOESNT GIVE A FUCK ABOUT STAR POWER. HIP HOP DOESNT GIVE A FUCK ABOUT ANYTHING BUT BARS AND DOPE BEATS COMPLIMENTING EACHOTHER, NOT ONE SAVING THE OTHER. FUCK ANYONE ON THE YOUNG MONEY ROSTER. LITERAL WHORES. WHO THE FUCK WOULD SIGN LIMP BIZKIT.

"And if you don't understand that, then it's probably why you don't travel and you don't see the world and I probably can't even have a conversation with you anymore." That's the line of b.s justification and rationalization she learned from the industry execs who have convinced her that pop bullshit is the best thing for her to be doing. Hey Nicki, Those same execs could give a fuck less if you last one moment beyond today's check percentage. Them people who don't travel or see the world put you on pop's radar.... and they will take you off.

  • Troof

What bothers me the most is when I hear watered down, mainstream "RAP" artists who have completely sold out to the masses attempt to call their music "Hip-Hop." Get the FUCK out of here man. Nothing on the radio is hip-hop. Nothing in the mainstream eye is hip-hop. There was a time, 10+ years ago where the lines between underground and mainstream were blurred, and hip-hop existed in both arenas. Those days are long gone now. True "HIP-HOP" now only exists in the underground. Everything else is pop.

  • Joe

I'd fuck her, but that's it.

What is meant in getting people to stop buying her music is not our act in the literal sense. Its more about making people THINK FOR THEMSELVES & not be so docile the minute they see tiddies n azz, multicolour circus theatrics, give the.. & the best hip hop award goes too....

The fuck is a sellout? From what i read in these comments, it sounds like someone who: 1. Doesnt make the music within the context of the genre that made them famous -or- 2.Someone who doesnt make music you enjoy anymore. But really, what does sellout mean? whats the OFFICIAL definition? If she enjoys what shes doing and isnt miserable, maybe its a good thing. Starship isnt my cup of tea patna, but i enjoy her other shit. Roman Reloaded was enjoyable. i say let her each out to as many people as possible. Let her do her thing. I respect that theres even FEMALE hip-hop artist on the map. She representin and goin hard. You should just kinda atleast respect that and not judge her solely on one song.

    • problemz/problema

A sell out is someone who came in the game one way then abandons their core base that made them for fame and fortune. This isn't "On the come up or Sucka Free Nicki". This is that generic MTV influenced,Z100 formula bullshit. She was always free to expand her horizons but she completely spit on the face of the people who gave her her buzz and started rhyming for the sake of spins instead of being a good MC..

Go on then & make your money, BUT DONT DO POP with the guise of HIP HOP & try to get bank both ways. Because hip hop heads aint foolish. We do NOT want to spit in the face of MCs who went against the grain back in the day to fight for hip hop to also get the oppurtunity of mainstream exposure. What about everything they did????? RESPECT.

    • ETK

no, you don't have to defend shit man. the hip-hop y'all like is still out there, you guys just choose to waltz in YMCMB articles and spend time dissing whoever because it gets your dick hard. well here's the newsflash homie: ain't nobody really reading your comments, and there's no "territory" for you to defend. the landscape of hip-hop will always change. it was diff in the 80s, diff in the 90s, diff in the 00s and it'll be different in a few years time. and in the words of Jay-Z, if you don't like the new shit, buy the old albums. y'know, Eminem fans heeded that advice. because of that, Slim Shady LP & Marshall Mathers just went diamond in 2011. that's LAST YEAR folks. you just proved my point too, 13-year olds buy albums. fuck are you niggas doing? copping tracks illegally and shitting on rappers every which way you niggas have the choice to do the sensible thing, bury your head in the sand and listen/support the niggas you like or else you can keep on hating on Wayne and Nicki articles/tracks, lookin like that class-A hater who never gets sleep and will never get his fix.

    • Anonymous

because those of us that grew up in the 90s with that golden era of this shit have to defend it against whack rappers/whack gimmics to try to keep it 100. Defend it as a whole, not just bury your head in the sand and listen to who you like, its about hip hop as a genere. It wasnt just for anyone who can rhyme two words together but unfortunately that shit changed with the internet era and you got all these 13 year old kids having way too much influence on this shit because they are the only ones who buy albums.

  • Anonymous

Slomo and c-tee must know YESSIR because of the way they defend Nicki.

    • Anonymous

i personally wanted a good laugh.

    • Slomo

What doesn't make any sense is how people, who don't like her music and don't like her, are commenting on an article ABOUT HER. So what happened you guys? You saw her name and clicked on it because you guys despise her? Makes a lot of sense.

  • Anonymous

MAD cause your favorite rapper probably suck

  • Anonymous

love nickii haters can stay MAD

  • Worley

"pop songs have more reach than her urban songs and that she's not going to apologize for making music for the masses." Translation: I can make more money selling music to white folk and their imitators than I can selling music to urban nigras.

    • iamhiphop

@c-tee Just because you're making money doesn't mean you're good. Soulja Boy is a horrible rapper, yet he's making money. Britney Spears is making money, yet her ass can't even sing. Hell, fucking Kim Kardashian has no talent, and she makes money. So money doesn't equal talent. How do they sell? Controversy and gimmicks. A lot of artists nowadays rely on one of these two or both to sell records and Nicki Minaj is a good example of this. She relies on both. There are a few artists out there who doesn't rely on controversy and gimmicks to sell records (Adele is a good example). At the end of the day, its quality over quantity.

    • c-tee

so @iamhiphop: she sucks at? really? um she sucked at it she woudn make money from it. also not EVERYONE has the same tastes in music. so just because YOU dont like it. dont say she "sucks at it" when you just aren into it. thats just being a hater and negative for no reason.

    • iamhiphop

The problem isn't even selling out. She a hip-pop artist, like the Black Eyed Peas. The problem is making quality music, which she's not doing. I applaud anyone trying to be diverse, but when you suck at it, the results become disasterous. Just my two cents.

    • c-tee

just because something made someone famous that doesn mean thats what they need to stick to. people grow and change all the damn time. she doesn have to be that girl anymore if thats not who she was. fuick what made her famous. people get famous off of this and taht all the time that doesn mean they have to stick to it. just because you aren diverse doesn mean others cant be.

    • Anonymous

Once again, when i say "stay true to yourself," I meant "don't forget what made her famous," and hip-hop made her famous.

    • c-tee

and once again she is being true to herself. its the kinda music she likes, and is into. she would be selling out if she DIDNT like the music she was doing. thats a sellout. so just because you wanna be negative keep the bull to yourself

    • Anonymous

Nope. A sellout is someone who makes music for the masses and doesn't stay true to themselves.

    • c-tee

the point of making music is to read people and be happy with what you are doing. she wants to reach EVERYONE, and i even know alot of BLACK people who listen to pop music. a sell out is someone making music THEY are not happy with it.

  • stbaby

The fact that you basically took the time out to comment means she is doing something right.Stay pressed cos we know you have hundreds of account ,you use to blog.NICKI keep doing your thing cos your are on the right path and your latest song is dope.LOVE.

    • c-tee

THANK YOU!!! DAMN there are so MANY artists i dont like. but i dont stalk their shit just to comment and throw hate. i just SMDH and move on.

  • c-tee

ALL YOU ARE HATERS. YOU DONT LIKE HER? OKAY? WHY CONSTANTLY TAKE YOUR TIME TO COMMENT HER SHIT? BE REAL. DO YOU KNOW WHAT A SELL OUT IS? A SELL OUT IS SOMEONE WHO MAKES MUSIC THEY DONT ENJOY. OBVIOUSLY SHE ENJOYS THIS KINDA MUSIC. THEREFORE SHE IS HAPPY WITH IT. THAT MEANS SHE NOT A SELL OUT. A SELL OUT IS SOMEONE MAKING MUSIC JUST TO PLEASE OTHERS AND IT DOESNT PLEASE THEM. GET YOUR SHIT STRAIGHT. LIKE REAL TALK.

    • grrrrreg

We comment to engage in the conversation that is held between the producers of music and the us the consumers. Listen and reflect, listen and reflect.

    • c-tee

NOPE. YOU SOUND RETARDED. YOU JUST SAID IT YOURSELF. "STAY TRUE TO THEMSELVES" NICKI HAS ALWAYS MADE IT CLEAR SHE WAS INTO DIFFERENT TYPES OF MUSIC. SHE NEVER SAID SHE WAS ONLY INTO HIP HOP. SO HOW THE FUCK DOES HER MAKING THE KINDA MUSIC SHE ENJOY MAKE HER A SELLOUT? GET REAL. JUST BECAUSE YOU DONT LIKE IT DONT MEAN SHIT. JUST BECAUSE YOUR ONE SIDED ABOUT WHAT YOU LISTEN TO DOESN MEAN OTHERS CANT BE INTO DIFF SHIT. GET REAL MAN

    • Anonymous

WROOOOOONG!!! Your comment is just retarded. A sellout is someone who makes songs for the mainstream and doesn't stay true to themselves. How's Nicki gonna say she's the queen of hip-hop when she's doing techno-pop records. This shit sounds like a Katy Perry record.

  • Anonymous

If you are reading this comment you probably have no money, no job, and your breath stinks.

    • Shana

lmao look at alll the brainwashed ymcmb trolls here. WE ARE VOICING OUR OPINION STAYING TRUE TO OURSELVES. so take it like the brainwashed bitch that you are. & stay stereotyping. What the fuck else do ymcmb rap about other than the same fucking shit over and over again. Repeatin words coz they aint know what else to say, trynna play it off like its gona be a new fad coz coons of all colors will EAT THAT SHIT up. THE ONES WHO know wassup dont have to comment, YES WE ARE TAKING TIME OUT OF OUR DAY TO COMMENT HERE TO WAKE YOUR DUMBASS UP.

How the fuck did u know?!!

  • Reality

"I'm just adding on to my brand. And if you don't understand that, then it's probably why you don't travel and you don't see the world and I probably can't even have a conversation with you anymore." So Nikki...when you were just a typical "around the way girl" from queens, did you travel the world? I was about to defend her then she finished with this nonsense that basically said she did turn her back on Hiphop. News flash...outside of the corporate world, hiphop was never about traveling the world and adding to your "brand". She has every right to make music her way, but bottom line you are responsible for what you portray...and if it's female mc turned pop star, then sleep in the bed you made. Nowadays every entertainer has to be a rapper/pop star/actor/singer/mogul/fashion designer all wrapped in one "brand"...and we wonder why the quality of music has struggled

  • iamhiphop

There's nothing wrong with experimenting with other genres of music and branching out, the problem's when you suck at it. Lil Wayne tried that shit with Rock music and failed miserably. Nicki just did the same thing with Techno and got the same results. Starships sucked and Roman Reloaded sucked, too.

    • Slomo

No ha. I am not a barbie. I enjoy her music. Just not a die hard fan.

    • iamhiphop

Yep, heard the songs, not impressed by them. I'm not one of those people who says a song sucks without listening to it. Starships sounds like a Katy Perry record. Roman Reloaded sounds like Roman in Moscow part 2, and i didn't like Roman in Moscow. Roman's Revenge is a much better record, mostly because of Eminem.; Nicki had alright verses on that song. If Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded sounds likes the singles that have been released, especially that god-awful Stupid Hoe song, then I'm definitely not gonna check out the album. Not gonna stop the Barbies from getting it. One question, are you a Barbie?

    • Slomo

Of course there's Internet. People under 21 listen to the Internet too. So I'm glad you took time on the internet to listen to "starships" and "roman reloaded"

    • iamhiphop

If by people, you mean young people under the age of 21, then yeah. They do enjoy the radio. Fortunately for me, the radio's not the only source of music. There is the Internet. So I'm good.

    • Slomo

Exactly. And all the "crap that's on there" appeals to people and people enjoy it. You dont, so don't waist your time on here.

    • iamhiphop

Why is it getting massive radio-play? Because it's a techno-pop record and it fits with the other crap that's on there.

    • Slomo

Obviously you didn't read my comment. If it's so "bad" to you, then why is the song getting immense radio play. I don't care if you dont like the song. Just don't comment on here and make it sound as if "everyone" agrees with you because a lot of people don't. People like it, people listen to it.

    • iamhiphop

      1. Starships is a techno record. Listen to it. 2. When I say "failing miserably," I meant she failed to make a good record. You can make a good non-hip-hop record and Nicki made a bad non-hip-hop record.

    • Slomo

First off, Nicki didn't do "techno." Thats a whole different genre. Secondly, yes lil waynes rock stuff didn't do good, but "starships" has been playing on the radio for a while now ever since it has been released. If that is "failing miserably" then something is clearly wrong with you.

  • shedoedoe

lol. she always got to be defending something she did yesterday.

  • rich

LOL. this bitch recorded 'roman reloded' probably yesterday, given the subject matter. thus it clearly was a response to all the negative criticism over the past few weeks. she talks like shes always making records like this to balance out 'strships' and 'superbass' type records. WRONG. YOU WERE FEELING THE PRESSURE AND FORCED OUT A HIP HOP SONG TO SHOW YOU ARENT A SELLOUT

  • RAMSES

same sellouts callin her a sellout when them low life niggaz make it cool in they music to kill anotha guy of they own color ,yet they refuse to say anything bad towards gays cause that would offend jews an others who could easly shut them down no matter how much they claim they got

  • TCM

Why is she saying AK? Thats a Muslim term. She knows nothing about Islam. YMCMB artists should all be actors. They are SO fake. And why is Flex the biggest dick (or in the case clit) rider for saying its funny?

  • Anonymous

bitch didnt sell out cus of pop songs... she sold out to the devil... satanic Ho....

  • be0

Ppl need to stop acting as if Nicki Minaj was really "real hip-hop" to begin with. YM themselves have almost created & made popular the new genre Hip-Pop. That means there's gonna be singing, catchy(easy) hooks and uptempo beats. Nicki came into the game singing on her albulms (Super Bass, Moment4life, Amazing)so wat's different now? Aboslutely nothing, she's been pop to begin with & dats how she'll always be cuz she has to sell records or YM wnt give her dat big push she's getting now.

  • D90

we're not worried that shes goin leave... we're hoping for it

  • Mr Flamboyant

This is so damn sad as much as it is stupid. And stupid.

  • Starshit

    over this overrated BITCH!

  • So Icy Boi!

YMCMB iz unstoppable & untouchable. swag what a rooster.... damn swag Weezy da king of Hip Hop Nicki da Queen Limp Bizkit da rock legendz Birdman da MC Drake da Shakespeare of rap Tyga da club dude Busta Rhymes & Mystical da veteranz. damn....... YMCMB 2012. swag

^^I agree with everything you said except the rock part. There's really great rock music out there.

Eminem the King of Hip Hop Missy Elliot Queen of Hip Hop Rock is for fags wit no life Mannie Fresh Da MC Drake the Rick Ross of rap Juvenile tha Club Man Those veterans washed up.

    • Tony Viera

Pfffffffffffff wajajajajajajajajajaja what a joke!!! you make me laugh so hard!!!!

  • Psyber

just listened to Starships. if you gonna crossover and appeal to the masses, TRY NOT DROPPIN THE N-BOMB ON THE TRACK. also, learn how to sing perhaps...

  • Psyber

the fact that you have to explain yourself, means you sold out. crazy ho.

  • unclesam

Ayo, Nicki, forreal, we hip-hop fans arent scared of you leaving hip-hop, were scared of you fucking staying. Crossover permanently, begone, shoo, we dont want you.

  • DearNicki

Nicki, branching out grows your fanbase and increases your longevity. Not to mention possibly getting some pop fans to enjoy hip hop too. This seems like a non-issue. Be strictly hip hop? So you can sell as many copies as Jean Grae? Business is business, period.

    • just another nigga

      Haha. You're kidding, right?

    • Slomo

To me, they are alright. To others, they suck. To others, they absolutely enjoy them. It's music.

    • Anonymous

"Made money, had hits, and nominated for Grammys" So did Katy Perry, Britney Spears, and Justin Bieber. But are they good?

    • Slomo

Unclesam, what do you mean making "quality music?" There are pop songs out there that are of "quality." Everyone has their own taste in music. And what the hell is quality music to you then? There are pop stars out there that are still around. And in YOURE opinion, she makes "trash." And maybe other people think that too. But look, she's made money, she had hits, and has been nominated for Grammys. There is nothing you can do about that but obviously just come on here and complain. If it wasn't "quality" music, she wouldn't be where she is at now. Music is changing, deal with it.

    • unclesam

Increase longveity? No, this shortens her longveity. If she cant keep up making the pop hits shell be gone, like artists before her. Making quality music increases longveity, not making pop music. Also, Id rather pop fans enjoy GOOD hip-hop than being fed the trash that Nicki makes.

  • chris URBAN LOL

only sellouts and suits use the term "urban" to describe music...hilarious

  • dee

just because super bass did well on the charts she thinks that pop is the best route to go when all her new pop songs are failing not charting well and not being played on the radio so i think she is getting ahead of herself when she says she knows what she is doing

    • Slomo

To you. But to others, it's good.

    • Anonymous

Just because a song is successful doesn't always mean its good.

    • Slomo

The Beast. You obviously have no idea what your talking about. The only promo single that flopped was "Massive Attack." Then she released, "Your Love" and that was a huge hit. And dee, "Starships" is getting lots of radio play.

    • The Beast

Lol you right. If anyone remembers, before her debut album was released, this bitch dropped 4 'promo' singles (which all flopped). She actually had no intention of putting 'Your Love' (her 1st hit) on the album This goes to show that she DOES NOT know wtf she's doing.

  • Burmy

And you just ensured that you'll just be a passing trend like pop stars are...those who stay true to HIP-HOP live FOREVER.

  • sickntired

now this bitch stealing lady gaga swag and main calborator RedOne, who help produced this track. im so sick of this wack artist! jay-z said it best on to the next one. fuck a stupid hoe!

  • nickrazor2000

she says "im smart enough to know what im doing all the time" but then makes a song calling herself a STUPID HOE! This bitch is crazy! by the way starships sounds like a crappy katy perry song. she is also a horrible role model for young girls. its scary to know she is popular. Parents beware!

  • AP

"I think people sometimes get blown away by the magnitude of the pop stuff, because the pop stuff, it reaches everywhere and then I feel like my Hip Hop fans or Hip Hop culture starts getting a little bit afraid that I'm going to leave."......This chick is so far off its crazy. NO ONE is afraid of you leaving hip-hop, people would rather for you to stay out of hip hop.

  • TRUTH

And i don't know if anyone has told her..but that Starship track is WACK. Even for a pop song...its very generic and nothing new. BEAT IT by Michael Jackson was a good POP song....but this starhip shit is just trash.

  • TRUTH

and further more...She can expand her brand by doing HIPHOP. She should not feel the need to go SO POP just to try to expand.

    • Anonymous

truth if you're trying to say she would have the success and worldwide fame she does makig quality "hip hop" than you're living in a dream world. Crooked I is nice as fuck... whose more popular?

    • TRUTH

man please...You think HIP HOP artist JUST stop touring europe...that is nothing new...and they have not have to drop a bullshit ass song like startship to get excepted. Starship is a techno song...techno is old news overseas...Americans are just now starting to get on to it.. i was overseas in the early 2000's germany, england, italy..and so forth...that been on that techno. THEY APPECIATE REAL HIPHOP OVER THERE MORE THAN YOU THINK.....ESPECIALLY GERMANY

    • URANTIA

no, only jay-z and kanye can do brand expansion on a massive level and even jay's compromised with borderline pop features (umbrella)...objectively, pop music is way more popular in the world than rap (assuming the world is her market for her brand expansion) which it probably is ---> "And if you don't understand that, then it's probably why you don't travel and you don't see the world"

  • TRUTH

If she has to explain why she is putting out these records.....then its to late...she has sold out. If she has to try to justify her records...than she's has sold out. She just don't get it.
