@Anonymous: I knew that somebody will bring this argument into the discussion. Well, I can't and don't want to argue with that, you're right I guess. But as far as these moves, all of them is part of Nas' plan for staying in the game not just music-, but business-wise. Every point you brought is proven and right, but he's still representing himself at the end of the day. All these moves is just efforts for aligining your interests with the label's. Everybody doing that in the mainstream music industry, and while it doesn't acquit Nas of doing the same, it is far not as the same category with Ross. What would be the Nas' equivalent of what Ross has been done? For example, if it'd turn out that Nas was a long time informant / undercover cop for years, or something like that. That would question or nullify everything he ever said and did as a well-known rapper. Yepp, his music still would be profilic and artistic, but - as in Ross' case - it wouldn't be true. Which leads me back to the another conclusion I did with my previous comment: then, why would I support him if its more reliable artist out there? I think music as an art should always be about honesty in the purest form. But since it became a business, you have to take care that side too. Even with that, its important not leaving alone the other one - and this is a main distinction between Nas and Ross.

Butin Ross' case it is truly undermined his persona and subject matter. What can be worse than this? Only one can comes to my mind, if it turns out that the voice on your albums actually not yours. The point is although every rapper lying about some point, but when you contradicts yourself so deep that basically everything you come up with is fake, I think it is a valid reason for criticsm a denial. What does it have to do with music? I think its all about support. All I stated above don't make Ross' music itself worse, and here comes the validity of your point. I agree that people should look at music and judge it mainly as entertainment, but it doesn't mean that I should support it too. I listen to Ross occasionally, cause I want to know what I'm forming an opinion about, and one can barely avoid him nowadays with those amount of features he has. But I have never bought any of his materials (be it a complete LP or just a single), never went to one of his shows etc. Simply I don't want to support him with my money, regardless of how hot is the music he makes. And it won't change in the future, you can bet on that, mainly because of the point I stated above. Why whould I spend my money on a wannabe gangster's fairy tale album even when I can listen to authenic street rappers?

You made some good points, but Nas being real/consistent with himself? His inconsistency IS his biggest issue. Despite his talent, he was NEVER able to capitalize off his full potential to meet the expectations people had for him. Every album of him has at least a few obvious, horrible sellout attempts that throw off the whole sequencing and concept. Come on, he's working with the same people he accused of destroyed Hip Hop, just a few years ago. He signed with Def Jam after calling them an 'evil empire', he went from the introspective street poet on Illmatic to the reckless mafia don on IWW, traded Hip Hop masterminds for generic hitmakers, sold out completely with Nastradamus and I Am and went back to the 'real' rapper after Jay, Nas' fans and others called him out on his bullshit. Nas will always be an outstanding talent, but the countless questionable moves will always overshadow his career.

One word: credibility. I don't like Rick Ross, but he definiately makes hot music and has great taste when it comes to picking beats. But you can't deny that he is fake as fuck. Period. I don't ever bother making a list proving that, from his name and CEO-past to his connection with Slip'N'Slide, the list would be too long. Just face the facts, its not about musical ability, cause music business is not about that anymore. Its all about who can bring more to the label's table. And people not giving a fuck credibility no more, he's willing to spend their money on artists like Officer Roberts. From the label perspective this is desirable, so here comes the constand co-sings and dick sucking for Rick Ross from practically everbody else in the music biz. I'm not naive, Nas is getting money from the same corporate enviroment and you can critize him working with fake people. But that's doesn't mean that he, or his whole image is fake. Just like in the previous paragraph, I won't make a list, but Nas is consistent, being real with his past and values, plus it seems like he is honest with himself. He, being in the industry is all about hustling and getting money, and that's the way in the industry nowadays. You can adapt to it and still getting money, or going against it and being broke in two years. I can understand that in his situation (khm ... Kelis?) this is the only way being able to keep his lifestyle. So making a long story short: when it comes to Rick Ross and Nas, whe can talk about music and money, but the former never can be more credible than the latter, period. Its crystal clear. And even if we want to talk about it: at the end of the day, Nas' abilities and catalogue is undeniable, you can't write a relevant book without about hip-hop without him. He said himself the best: "name one rapper that I ain't influenced". For me, Rick Ross being a CEO in real life, then talking about the opposite and getting rich (I mean: famous) because of that - its not ridiculous reason for hate, more like a real reason for a huge WTF. Yeah, he can make hot music, but that doesn't deny the fact that HE IS FAKE, thus he is just a taleteller speaking about his dreams and imaginations. No, he is not in a same league as Nas music-wise, career-wise, money-wise and so on. But those more like relative categories, they can change (they won't, but can). As for credibility, you either have it or not.
