According to reports, 28 employees have been laid off from Jay-Z’s Rocawear offices in New York City. That number equals half of the total staff in Rocawear’s Manhattan office. The layoffs reportedly took place on January 6 and were due to “economic” problems.
More information on the layoffs can be found at the Department of Labor website.
Rocawear notably made headlines for its “Occupy All Streets” campaign last year. The brand originally said it was to support the Occupy Wall Street movement, but they were criticized for trying to capitalize on the cause.
In an interview with Gawker, a rep explained that “Rocawear strongly encourages all forms of constructive expression, whether it be artistic, political or social. ‘Occupy All Streets’ is our way of reminding people that there is change to be made everywhere, not just on Wall Street.” However, the rep also added, “At this time we have not made an official commitment to monetarily support the movement.”
