Mannie Fresh Talks Getting Started In Music, Early Days Of Cash Money

Mannie Fresh waxes nostalgic about his origins, from developing an interest in music to his Cash Money days.

New Orleans producer Mannie Fresh was the latest artist  to participate in an in-depth interview with the Red Bull Music Academy, joining Mobb Deep, among others.

Fresh gave fans an insight into how he first got interested in music.

"My Christmas gifts used to be instruments," explained Fresh. "I was like, 'Okay, my friend got a bike. Why did I get a turntable?' Or somebody got an...Atari game. I got a trumpet. I was just like, 'Okay, this stuff is just starting to stack up.' [Laughs] My dad must've seen something in me. I would say somewhere around twelve is when I took an interest in it. Like, you know what? I'm just gonna go through my pile of what i thought was junk at the time: my keyboard, my drum machine, horns and all that, and start fiddling around with it."

Mannie Fresh explained that before he joined Cash Money, he was pressured to make gangsta Rap music, but joining Birdman and Slim's label allowed him to make the music he wanted. "What I did before I got to Cash Money, I got back to my roots. I started deejaying again, and doing house parties and clubs all over New Orleans."

"When Cash Money approached me, they was just like, 'Well, what could you to change...our format of how we doing music?' And I was like, 'It's this hot thing called "bounce" right now. It's just blowing up all over the place.'" This led to Cash Money signing UNLV, a bounce act.

Love hearing Mannie talk about early days of New Orleans Hip Hop. Alot of these posts, which I presume are from kids who don't even remember Wayne before The Carter series, are talking about, "Mannie is just mad because he can't sell...", "Everyone on YMCMB is doing better than people who are not..." That's so naive and oblivious to the history that Cash Money has already laid out (people leaving because of bad business). Mannie built the Cash Money sound period. PERIOD. To echo what someone else already said, why would I want to be a slave to some label that is not paying me what they owe when I could move on and still do well? Because you want to sit in a rented car and look like you got paper? FOH.

Dope interview.... We need more of these sit down sessions with artists.

We all grew up w/ old school cash money and all of them where young getting a taste of fame. It was genuine they made real music and they were passionate no matter what hood you was from you could relate ever if you just wanted to bob your head or catch a wall,, you anticipated there videos! Like I said earlier these young men were young and living a dream and they TRUSTED BAby and Slim! Why wouldn't they they had FAME they came from nothing and at the end they had nothing and baby and slim was rich and soo greedy that they allowed a good thing to parish and b/c they was young they got taken advantage of baby is washed up and hanging on to lil waynes coat tail.. And that's the only reason he is relevant! You can be rich and have no soul... Scary I'm a firm believer what goes around comes around .I like Mannie and remember unlv and all the bounce music he produced. I wish him the best!! Stay true to your music!! Much luck ymcmb.. Don't get it twisted I love lil Wayne juvie bg Turk magnolia shorty rip!! So hopefully niki drake Mac Maine don't get the bad end of stick!

First time I saw Mannie Fresh live: Everyone was screaming, jumping, but he was up on stage like he and his turntable were the only things in the world. The man truly loves music. Much respect.

never much of a fan of this guy and especially not anything that young money puts out but this guy sure must be missing all the paychecks he could be getting...his "used to be" crew is all lounging on yachts while im sure he isn't poor..he's not doing neaaaarly as well

    • joem

How can you not be a fan of Mannie Fresh?... without Mannie, Juve and BG there would be no gay ass lil wayne.. Mannie primarily was responsible for pretty much every hit they ever had and the Big Tymers was the shit in their day. I still bump their greatest hits.. "Gaaaator boots, with the pimped out gucci suit" That shit is classic. Timeless Masterpiece. Now get your roll on and GTFO here with that bullshit. Mannie Fresh is DOPE. You're lame as hell.. p.s. Mannie was never part of gay ass "young money" it was all about Cash Money Big Tymers.

@Burmy Yeah 400 Degreez is still the highest-selling album in Cash Money history but Slow Motion is on Juve the Great not 400 Degreez

    • Burmy

Lupe, 400 Degreez is still the highest-selling album in Cash Money history (4x Platinum) and "Slow Motion" is still its biggest hit. Your point is?

people like mannie fresh are mad because cash money survived without his dumb ass. stick to making beats and leave the business end up to the real businessmen.

  • RAMSES

M PERIOD. FRESH COMMA, YO WIFE IS MY ///BABY MOMMA ,,,,classic

  • NONO

WRONG. Cash Money does bad business, it's just that they are very successful, and those are two different definitions....And you left one thing out...PERCEPTION. No amount of business can bring you back to life after the people have shunned you out...And Hip Hop is the only genre I see this happen to,when people still have what it takes...Your mindstate his what has created the shallow business model that stands today, and it needs to be destroyed, by the PEOPLE

Still trying to figure out why everyone who leaves Cash Money Records can't sell records anymore. It's because it's 90% business and 10% talent. Cash Money has a great staff behind the scenes (black and white people) and they do good business.

    • BS Back

@Anonymous Stop it son. Cash Money is nothing, NOTHING, without Mannie Fresh's production. And you keep saying Cash Money does bad business is like saying P Diddy does good business. Tell that to all the people who are constantly saying, "we left because of shady business." Even in the YMCMB days, Wayne was getting hit up for not paying for A Milli, or Lollipop. I would rather be free and doing pretty good, than a slave to someone and giving off the illusion we have all this money. And I'm from New Orleans.

    • Jake Drennan

lol did that guy say someone only hates on cash money because they are from louisiana? are you serious? nobody except girls and middle school kids like these guys cuz they really do suck and nothing is original...and if we wanted techno music on the beats we would go to a rave party..but we don't. not one artist one cash money has the slightest bit of substance. yeah some of them can rap there ass off with the same recycled styles but what are they really saying...not shit. listen to some older hip hop or the newer stuff that comes from artists with substance and just compare the quality in content. at least in my opinion meaningful life lyrics>>>>>>some corny sex lyrics or how lil wayne has millions of dollars and how everyone who listens to him lives vicariously through him..thats the hilarious part is people driving around rust buckets pumping these money anthems like they are rich too when the songs over they are digging for quarters at the bk drive thru hahah

Why would a Cash Money fan be mad, when the team winning lol.

    • what

Man all your niggaz be mad if you want too, but everytime you look around cash money is being sue, these niggaz owe everybody including their mama's need i say more cash money is bad business son

    • Anonymous

@NONO regardless of your personal opinion, Cash Money Records does good business, because they are a always in the top 5 every year for black owned labels. People like you hate them, because they are from the state of Louisiana and that's your only reason to hate them.

    • Anonymous

@BS how many platinum albums or singles have Mannie Fresh produced since he left Cash Money Records? The nigga an employee now, so he may as well stayed working for Cash Money. What producers own labels with platinum artists after they sue YMCMB??

Had to do it twice. had to let it be known that it was a reply to some b.s.

    • BS

I call BS on that statement. What about the multitudes of producers that are always complaining about Wayne owing them money. Every single act that has left Cash Money records say it's because of financial issues (i.e. not getting paid what they are owed). Mannie has done quite well since leaving Cash Money btw.

  • Burmy

I'll take a Mannie Fresh beat and a NOLA soulja over any of these "YMCMB" folks any day! REJUVENATION JANUARY 17-COP DAT!
