M.O.P.'s Billy Danze Critical Of Brooklyn Nets Stadium Construction, Cautions There Will Be Crime Spike

The veteran Brooklyn emcee says that Jay-Z and the Nets have no business moving their arena to a ghetto, and fans can expect the local residents to mash out. He also vows to not attend games.

Brooklyn, New York's M.O.P. (a/k/a Mash Out Posse) has always been known for their loyal representation of the borough. In a recent interview with KevinNottingham.com, M.O.P.'s Billy Danze was critical of the New Jersey Nets' relocation to Brooklyn.

"Where [the Nets are] putting that stadium, I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but somebody is gonna get the shit robbed out of them. They know they ain't got no business fucking around in that ghetto," said the veteran emcee known for his yelling delivery. "You can’t put all that money in a place where niggas are starving and not expect shit to pop off. It’s like, you’re gonna come over here and wave your big bag of money around and tell me I can’t have it? Nah, ain't gonna happen, B." A sports fan, Danz added, "I hope it works out, but you will not see me attending any games."

The New Jersey Nets' move to Brooklyn has been spearheaded by Jay-Z, a part owner in the NBA franchise. Jay-Z's Roc-A-Fella Records had signed M.O.P. in the early '00s, though the duo left the label in 2004 without releasing an album.

This week, M.O.P. teams with production team The Snowgoons to release Sparta.

I don't see nothing major going down. The place will be well lite with security and police heavy on game nights ..... I hope the NBA can iron out the money issues so I can catch a Nets vs Knicks borough battle

No one is concerned about this bullshit but the lame duck niggas living in their 1-2 block boundary...I was born and raised in Ebbetts Field and if this was maybe 10 years ago, i'd be in the same mind set of "yo niggas gon' run these people pockets blah blah." Now when I visit my parents I see pink folk jogging around with their dogs and pink folk walking in and around the hood not concerned about shit. Instead of worrying about the crime rate and people getting ran up on nonsense, fools need to realize what's REALLY going down....NO ONE IS CONCERNED ABOUT YOU...AT ALL...THE WORLD IS MUCH BIGGER THAN THE BLOCK YOUR ON...GET AN EDUCATION AND GET OUT...BE A PRODUCTIVE MEMBER OF THIS SOCIETY...but i'm sure you'll just blame illuminati for all your shortcomings...#realityisabitch

Thank you Bruce ,Jay-Z, and the Nets for bringing this arena to Brooklyn, there are plenty of jobs to be had, i for one work for a company that just picked up the contract for AC and Heating ventilation,..if a minor league baseball stadium can come to Coney Island and be crime free, im sure this Arena can come to bustling Flatbush ave..its a good look ..

  • west

I don't know what the fuck he talking bout, downtown Brooklyn is the new wall street, that shit aint no ghetto, come on son, stop that bullshit..and any nigga from Brooklyn know that shit is a sweet location, right next to the long island railroad , perfect spot..oh yeah and its still some ghettos in Brooklyn, don't believe me , take yo azz to Brownsville frontin and see what the outcome will be..not to mention any other projects in the hood..like lil kim said , you better have a pass when you cross that bridge..

  • crooklynzoo

lol @ anyone thinking Brooklyn is hard like that. The hardest US ghettos don't compare to slums overseas. I been to both and Brooklyn was def not what I expected

    • Ha

Brooklyn ain't that hard, just a lot of loud new yorkers who puff their chest up and talk as tough as they possibly can. I remember back when bangers in LA were clowning on new york cats cause the shit just aint that serious. They were right. US hoods ain't got shit on overseas slums anyway. People complaining they aint got shit always got a fridge and a stove in they crib over here. Overseas, people REALLY ain't got shit. They dont bang cause they want some stupid sneakers and and a lexus, they bang cause their families will Literally starve if they dont. Bangers overseas never feel the need to glorify their violence in their songs cause the shit is too real for that. Thats why I will never take gangster rap seriously, especially when its foundation consists of a dude who used to wear makeup and shiny jumpsuits before joining NWA.

  • J-Franks

Not to mention this arena is also creating jobs.

    • Billy Danze

im all for the jobs brother... but i`m not talking about that, im talking about the wild ass kid with big ass gun and we thinks is a flawless get away plain... what is wrong we u ppl...

  • J-Franks

When was the last time Danze was there? I visit family in the area all the time, the place is a commercial type district with shopping complexes. I don't get his problem.

    • J-Franks

Alright, first of all I probably should not take this seriously considering anyone can type in the name Billy Danze and claim they are him. But even if you are, I'd be surprised that someone who closely relates to the ghetto/gangsta theme is worried about such a thing happening. Point is that, I, a regular dude, am not afraid of the area. Brooklyn is like any diverse place, if you know where you are and know where you are going, there is NO reason to be worried about such thing. The area where the Barclays Center is being constructed is one of these places. I will not be sweating, nor should you or anyone else.

  • Shone Jones

Billiy Danze needs to learn the definition of REGENTIFRICATION... Just as that damn STADIUM moves in....him and all the neighborhood jackers WILL BE FORCED TO MOVE OUT... Doesn't he realize the whole economic demographic of that area will change with a new shopping complex, restaurants, bars, sporting shops and everything to accomodate all those season ticket holders who got money... i tell ya these so-called "real dudes in the game" say and do some REAL DUMB THINGS

    • Shone Jones

I'm just as opposed to that stadium being there Because I don't like the displacement of residents and the eventual cosmetic changing of the whole urban landscape. But Danze cannot stop the INEVITABLE. Which is the fact that THE "HOOD" don't run shit. The goons, duns, shooters, and hardheads that Danze praises never bought any property or politicaly empowered themselves to stand as a voice and say "This shit ain't happening." So guess what? the bulldozier is blowing up your spot, son. It's fucked up, but it is what it is.

Ratner originally planned to move the Nets across the Hudson River for the beginning of the 2009-10 NBA season. However, he has had to revise his goal and now plans to move the franchise to Brooklyn for the start of the 2011-12 season. Although the arena was scheduled to open in 2011, along with the rest of the complex, controversies involving local residents and the use of eminent domain, coupled with the lack of funding in a struggling economy, have caused the project to be delayed.[6] On May 16, 2009, the New York Supreme Court, Appellate Division struck down an opponents' lawsuit that sought to prevent the state of New York from using eminent domain to seize the property where the 22-acre (89,000 m2) Atlantic Yards project is slated to be built. The opponents appealed the New York Supreme Court's ruling,[7] but lost when the Court of Appeals, New York's highest court, upheld the right of the state to use eminent domain for this project.[8] A groundbreaking ceremony was held on the site on March 11, 2010.[9] After all the delays, the Nets are now slated to commence playing in Brooklyn in time for the 2012-2013 NBA season +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ NO ONE ELSE IS GIVING JAY ANY CREDIT FOR THIS MOVE BESIDES THE BLOGS AND THE ASSIMILATED COMMENTATORS. Yeah, 99 percent of hip hop has no clue how business works. Jay-z is an investor that really doesnt have a huge say so in how the whole business is run. He will make money off of the team when it turns a profit but he's not the one calling the shots.

  • The_Truth

This is sad. Crab in a barrel... if Jay-Z had nothing to do with this you would hear anything from him.... You can tell he is bitter by adding that he wouldn't be seen at any game....

In 2004, after failing to secure a deal for a new arena in Newark, New Jersey (eventually a new arena, the Prudential Center, was built in Newark), YankeeNets sold the franchise to a group headed by real estate developer Bruce Ratner for $300 million, beating out a group led by Charles Kushner and Jon Corzine. While Kushner and Corzine wanted to keep the Nets in New Jersey, Ratner planned to move the team back to New York. In 2005 the Nets announced plans to locate the team in the Prospect Heights neighborhood of Brooklyn. One of the members of the ownership group is rap mogul and Brooklyn native Jay-Z. The Barclays Center is the center of an extensive redevelopment project called the Atlantic Yards being built by Ratner's real estate development company. The site of the arena is nearby to the site that Walter O'Malley wanted to use for a new stadium for the Brooklyn Dodgers in the early 1950s. The plan was rejected and resulted in the team's relocation to Los Angeles in 1958. The Nets would be the first major professional sports team to play home games in Brooklyn since the departure of the Dodgers. On September 23, 2009, Russian businessman Mikhail Prokhorov agreed to a $200 million deal to become a principal owner of the Nets and a key investor in the team's proposed home in Brooklyn. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ STOP LYING TO THESE KIDS! JAY AIN'T DO S**T!

The New Jersey Nets' move to Brooklyn has been spearheaded by Jay-Z, a part owner in the NBA franchise. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ STOP LYING TO THESE KIDS! BRUCE RATNER, THE REAL ESTATE MOGUL WHO ALSO HAS A MINORITY STAKE IN THE TEAM, IS THE ONE WHO SPEARHEADED THE MOVE TO BROOKLYN. HE'S THE ONE WHO BROKERED THE DEAL WITH THE MTA FOR ATLANTIC RAIL YARDS, NOT JAY-Z. ARE YOU GOING TO SAY JAY WAS ALSO RESPONSIBLE FOR MOVING AND EVICTING ALL OF THOSE PEOPLE OUT OF THAT AREA? Y'ALL FORGOT PEOPLE WERE SUING TO BLOCK THE MOVE SO THEY WOULDN'T LOSE THEIR APARTMENTS AND HOMES RIGHT? HOW CONVENIENT.

  • I-am NigelClarke

As a Brooklyn resident, here since 2005, I'd like to voice my opinion. Danze may not have communicated his statements eloquently, but he speaks for many African Americans and Hispanics who've already been displaced by the effects of gentrification. Areas like Bed-Stuy (now Stuyvesant Heights), Park Slope and Bushwick have had seen radical changes, which have placed them in a state inferiority and a perpetual financial disadvantage. Minorities will not benefit financially from the stadium because they are not owners of any businesses in the area. The jobs created will not equal the financial gains made by team owners and the building/business owners in the area. Jay-Z could have been more hands on regarding growth for urban areas.

    • Anonymous

NO SHOTS, BUT WE'RE SPEAKING ON DOWNTOWN BROOKLYN. I KNOW FOR A FACT THERE ARE PLENTY OF BLACK BUSINESSES DOWN THERE THAT WON'T SEE A PENNY BECAUSE OF THIS. THE LITTLE POLISH AND ITALIAN SPOT AIN'T GONNA EAT EITHER. MOFUCKAS GOT THIS GAME OF LIFE ALL KINDA WRONG. THE RUSSIANS WILL MOVE FROM AROUND BRIGHTON BEACH TO DOWNTOWN/BAY RIDGE AND DO THEM. ITALIANS AND BLACKS ARE THERE SO THE MAN WILL BE CHECKING WHO AND WHAT. MOST OF YOU PEOPLE HAVE NO IDEA HOW CORRECT DANZE IS RIGHT NOW BECAUSE YOU'RE JADED BY JAY'S SUCCESS.

Go to a few ghettos around America and see how many businesses are owned by the residents. Everything in the hood is owned by Asians, Arabs or White Americans that live in other parts of the city.

    • Anonymous

THERE HAVE ALWAYS BEEN STORES OWNED BY SO-CALLED MINORITIES IN THAT AREA. ALWAYS. STOP SLOBBING ON JAY AND SEE THIS FOR WHAT IT IS. PRATT INSTITUTE, BROOKLYN COLLEGE, BAM & LOWER BROOKLYN RUSSIANS WILL TAKE THEM JOBS NOT SHAWNA AND DARRIN FROM 'ROUND THE WAY IN BREEVOORT, FT GREENE, GOWANUS AND RED HOOK PJS. YOU AIN'T FROM THERE STAN, SO WHAT SERIOUS INPUT COULD YOU GIVE IF YOU NEVER KNEW OR HAVEN'T SEEN THE DEMOGRAPHIC FROM WHAT IT WAS TO WHAT IT IS NOW? AND THERE WAS A NEW YORK NETS BEFORE THEY MOVED TO JERSEY. ASK DR J. KEEP SPEAKING ON SOMEONE HATING WHEN YOU HAVE NO FACTS OR EDUCATION ON AN ISSUE TO RETORT ON. BKLYN, MYRTLE AVE BED STUY DO OR DIE MARCY FOREVER.

    • Stan and Troll Slapper

Now, I'm not from BK, so I won't try and speak like I am 100% in on the situation, but looking at it from the outside, it's not Jay's fault that no minorities open stores there. I'm sure there are many success stories that have made it from BK, and they very well could have given back as well, so that cloud doesn't solely belong to Jay. it still brings jobs to the area, one way or another, stores will have to hire more people to deal with more visitors, the arena has to have people woring there, all the events, concerts etc. Money is going to make it's way to the people that will take a risk and get it. Once again, this is my opinion, but I think Jay pused so hard for this because it's about pride, this is a Brooklyn thing, otherwise they would have been the New York Nets. No need to hate cause you aren't a owner, Instead of buying a Benz with the front money from a deal, maybe Zane should have stepped up his business game and he would have some steady bread coming in.

comments like this is why the united states remains behind the rest of the world, and is slandered on the daily. in most parts of the world saying your american is a death sentence.. with good reason too, these ignorant, inbred americans just consume, complain, and support guns. i cant wait until the gregorian suppliers cut the plug, and the flag with the stars is burned

  • Steez Diamante

I live in the same neighborhood as where the stadium is being built...trust me, it's no hood. Flatbush and 4th Ave. is relatively metropolitan. It's nested safely between Park Slope and Ft. Greene - there's not a safer, more pragmatic location for the stadium to be built. Will shit happen from time to time, ehhh, sure - but such is life and that will happen regardless, not because it's 'Brooklyn'.

    • That right

@Steez Diamante you are 100% correct on what you said, Man i live around that area whole live man, you could have said what Billy Danze back in the days 1980's too 1990's but now it aint no hood for sure i remember when niggaz was scare to when walk there at high moon, these day not even Billy Danze can afford to live there his money aint long and bigg enouhg.there in no hood no more

Shouldnt be a problem. The city normally evicts and forces most of the poor people to leave when a new money generator like a sports stadium is built. Heaven forbid rich people having to walk past or talk to poor people.

  • Mynds

Im going opening day and to the concert. Coming from Miami. So the Nets not supposed to get money cause people are broke? Stadiums are always put in low income areas it's supposed to create jobs normally doesn't. Main thing instead of thinking about all the people to rob. people going to the games will spend money in the area open a business and stop being so bitter.

    • u sure bout that?

Correction: Niggas are that stupid. Cats will be robbing. The reason why the arena was built was to capitalize and continue gentrification. I remember back in the day going to Fulton St. to buy kicks,Downtown brooklyn used to be crazy. It has changed, but that poor ghetto element is still there.

    • Mynds

Doubt that. I'm from Brooklyn it's not Afghanistan. It might be some problems but not opening night. Niggas ain't stupid.

    • Dirty Dee

Yep, you will be butt naked with a gun mark on your dome OUTSIDE the stadium that day beggin' for change to get back to FL...

  • Hypestyle

so where exactly will the stadium be built? are people being displaced from their homes?
