DJ Premier Says "I'd Love To Work" With Justin Bieber

Preem says he'd hit the lab with the teen pop star as long as he wrote his own rhymes.

After DJ Premier allegedly banned Justin Bieber from rhyming in the 2011 BET Cyphers, the veteran producer is willing to hit the studio with the teen pop star. Speaking with MTV’s RapFix, Primo said that he would work with the singer/rapper as long as he penned his own rhymes.

“I’d love to work with him, just as long as he writes it,” he said. “He’s gotta sit there in front of me and write it. I’d love to work with him and it would be dope.”

He also touched on the BET Hip Hop Awards controversy of supposedly banning him from the cyphers. Preem says he was all for Bieber participating, but only if he wrote his verse on his own.

“At the cyphers, I said yo, I’m down for him to spit it, but if somebody writes your rap, you can’t do it. That was my only comment. Even thought I said, ‘Write your own rhymes honey and all that’—I’ma jokester, I could do that and it wasn’t even a diss,” he said. “I was all for it, for him to be in the cypher. [...] Just make sure you wrote your own verse. The cypher is the purest, most original form of our culture.”

as of right now 9th wonder and madlib are waaaaaayyyyy better than Preemo. J.dilla and Pete Rock trumped preemo a long time ago also.

It's permanent. Look at the artists that have gone platinum. When was the last time a street dude went platinum. Even TI is singing on tracks. I want the days back when if you sang on a song that track was the worst song on your album. Now these artists push it to the mindless. Auto Tune anyone.

    • Yuuup

+1 everything uhh said we just gotta hope it dont get so fucked that its permanent if so i see that movie idiocracy happening.

    • uhh

I wouldn't go that far....maybe 6 years i would say no way in hell either of these guys works with this douche....but in this day and age it seems Rap and Pop have merged and everyone is working with everyone. I never in a million years ever thought Eminem would work with Lil Wayne...and look what happened.

  • Area 514

"The cypher is the purest, most original form of our culture adds context. 'Keeping it real' keeps you real broke most times...but if you go out & earn your keep then you sold out. Illiteracy.

  • IDK

it's okay everyone! DJ Premier said that he'll work with Justin Bieber once Justin starts writing his own music. in other words: that'll never ever happen! :P anyways, all jokes aside...i kinda have mixed feelings about DJ Premier working with someone like JB. it's cool to expand his sound everywhere and all, but then it seems like he's only doing it for the money and not for the music anymore.

  • Anonymous

sold out? so he could choose between money and respect from losers on internet... what would u choose? lol

    • Anonymous

you're taking this too serious... i dont like it neither nor i want premo to work with bieber... i just talk about people who religiously talk about 'being real' and similar stuff while they would sign to ymcmb this very moment if wayne offered them a deal.. im talking about hypocrisy by those people... i dont like the collabo at all

    • Anonymous

Lol so in your eyes anyone that doesnt like the notion of him working with Beiber is an internet loser? Did you ever consider that theres fans that do read these stupid sites filed with your types? Dumb fuck.

  • Anonymous

I WAITED FOR THIS A LONG TIME... A MOMENT WHEN YOUR BASEMENT LOSERS HERO SELLS OUT HAHAHA

  • Anonymous

Preemo, we don't believe you. And it's the corporate that has you speaking out of line like this. The old Preemo would never have even fathomed this kind of scenario. It's a shame too. Between you, 9th Wonder and a whole lot of "self revered producers," you sold out. I wonder what Freddie would've said to this, bc he is one of the only few (sorry, NYG'z suck) that ever rocked the mic on your beats, along with NaS, Rakim, and of course Guru and a few fortunate others. Please give it a rest, bc the 9th Letter was the last album you ever did justice to, and everything after, including Christina Aguilera (or however her last name is fucking spelt) was doo doo. You sold your talent out, other producers have taken the helm, and you need to move on. And yeah, I am the 5% that believe that everything you touch isn't golden. Damn, I'm so mad...Pete Rock is our only savior from the golden era...smh...

    • dush

Premo needs to move on? RFLMAO!!! Go listen to Torae's "For The Record" just so you can feel so stupid for saying that. Plus there's alot of Premo songs I could name after the 18th Letter that are way better so that's a dumb comment. You're just mad because he wants to work with Beiber that's all

    • CLEAN UP

EXCUSE ME?!!!??? DID YOU JUST SAY THAT EVERYTHING THAT PREMO HAS PRODUCED AFTER RAKIM'S THE 18TH LETTER WAS DOO DOO? AND IT'S THE 18TH LETTER NOT THE 9TH LETTER. YOU NEED TO GO CHECK THAT NEW TORAE "FOR THE RECORD" JOINT BECAUSE IT'S OBVIOUS THAT YOUR EARS HAVE NOT BEEN WORKING AFTER HEARING THE 18TH LETTER. PLUS THERE'S TONS OF JOINTS THAT PREMIER MADE AFTER THE 18TH LETTER THAT ARE BANANAS SO YOU JUST MADE A MISGUIDED STATEMENT THAT HOLDS NO WEIGHT TO IT.

    • Anonymous

9th sold out too , working with lil b

  • Guru

What the fuck are you doing premo. saying bieber is nice! Thats the reason why i didnt like you.... always acting if you were real hiphop but i always knew that you are a bitch!!!!!!!

  • Why me Why Now?

This is the death of Hip Hop ,Justin Beiber? So let me get this right,Premo disses Canibus but praises Justin F-ing Beiber?

  • jack johnson

to Premo's credit he did say 'as long as he wrote his own rhymes', but there's no way he does, but then Premo will come out with an excuse saying something like "ok he had help from ludacris writing this, but he 'co-wrote' the rhymes with ludacris" or some bullshit like that

  • WestPhillyOG

If you don't want an artist in your cypher because you know in advance they didn't write their rhyme...cool, but how can Primo say with 100% that every single MC that's already been in the BET Cypher wrote their rhyme?

  • John Book

A few years ago when news surfaced that DJ Premier was working with Christina Aguilera, people thought *THAT* was the ultimate in crazy, and yet that was some her (and his) best work. Look at it this way. Premier is offering Bieber a challenge. I'm not a Bieber fan by any means, but those who know the history of certain rock'n'roll bands know similar stories between John Lennon & Paul McCartney, and Mick Jagger & Keith Richards. The Beatles were told they should write their own songs because it could be much more "profitable". But they also knew that doing their own material means more. With the Rolling Stones, there's the old story/myth that their producer told them that while covering blues songs is good, they should really write something. The story/myth was that they were locked in a room (a kitchen I think) and they were not allowed out until they came up with a song. "As Tears Go By" was their first song together, and that would start a string of incredible music. Let me state again that I'm not a Bieber fan, but he's still a young kid that hopefully will keep his head straight, away from the hype, the fans, and current controversies. He could very well be a good songwriter **if he put his mind to it** and he seems to be talented, with a willingness to try new things. It may sound odd for Premier to work with someone in pop, but Premier is probably thinking "you know, I may have dissed you for the BET Awards thing, but let me make it up to you" while at the same time he's thinking "one hot song could provide me with some serious publishing royalties for years to come. Two or three, maybe four... I'm kinda set." My point is that it might come off like Bieber needs to hustle or do something because someone assumes he needs some level of credibility in some demographic, but he's doing fine. One might say Premier is a bit of an opportunist, but you know what I call that? Part of the hustle, part of wanting to work, and Premier seems to be doing it in a direct manner, am I right in assuming this? People bitched at 9th Wonder for working with the Based God, and yet people quickly said "I didn't know either of them had it in them like that." I completely understand both sides of this equation, maybe some think Beiber is trying to become a more in-depth Eminem, but I think Bieber wants to be Bieber. He doesn't want to be Chris Brown, he doesn't want to be Ciara, Britney Spears, or Beyonce. One day we might see Bieber do a track with Edan, Eternia, Wizdom, or Buttery Lords, he might pull a Justin Timberlake, put on a plushie outfit and start playing bass with the Flaming Lips, who knows. My point is, don't look down on this collaboration just yet. The possible song(s) may or may not be good, but it helps to keep Premier in the public eye at a time when less-worthy producers are getting credit for creating repetitive bullsh*t music. Look at what happened when everyone finally found out the source for "Nas Is Like", people were saying "oh damn, so THAT'S what they were talking about when it came to the pink label with the fish on it." Premier will pull it off and do something serious because he is a producer's producer, and again, even if this song is not to the liking of the hip-hop elite, all it takes is for the instrumental to surface and everyone will be rhyuming or singing over it like 2012's #Otis. If it can work, make it work. Just think of this being a chance for Premier's music to be alive and vibrant to a younger generation, when a Bieber endorsement may make people hunt down "Words I Manifest" and Pushim's "Set Me Free". Make it happen.

LMAO! Cosign 100%. And no, Preemo producing for "Genie in a bottle" gal would've been dope, but the beat sucked. I would've understood if he had some catchy pop shit like Timbaland, but he done failed venturing into forbidden territory.

This nigga wrote a 5 paragraph essay... smh I see what you're saying but you could have condensed that a lot.

  • insanemacbeth

for all those calling DJ. PREMIER a 'sellout', DJ. PREMIER, PRIMO whatever you want to call him, done been industry, from time!!! how/ why do you think he gets all these production placements? you have to be 'in', to get theses placements. so for PREMIER to say this, actually doesn't surprise me, at all!

    • insanemacbeth

producers in the streets don't get nowhere as many placements, as people as PREMIER (and other "industry"-types) does/ do. that's all i'm saying! whether PREMIER sold out or not, isn't really my concern!

    • Anonymous

He's "industry", but remember when he was "in the streets?" Sorry, I had to quote Mega on that one. Preemo just took the money road. He fell off like humpty dumpty.

I KNEW IT, right after I saw that video of Justin Bieber rapping (what someone else must have wrote), I knew they'd get DJ Premier to work with him just to get hip hop purists to stop hating on him, they just use DJ Premier's name like that and get them to brown nose him, just look at limp bizkit, mac miller etc

harkie...2 things you automatically fail in, your interest in guitar playing (you prob were the hippie guitar player on your campus) and your last name. and an honorable mention, your love for nicholas cage. he's a douchebag, which basically makes you a douchebag. except for lord of war. he was aiight in that. but everything else, eh....and i hate your pic. looks like someone farted on your chin just as you took it. and you probably blog. i hate bloggers, and me replying to you makes it blog like, which makes me hate you more. so in conclusion, no more hippie guitar playing under a tree with a conformist t-shirt on...

  • Versatile StreetTeam

Is he for real lol I like his marketing skills guess he is keeping his name in the mainstream headline...and maybe a JB fan would hear another Dj Premier produced track and actually like and it and appreciate Real Rap but this is hurting the Hip Hop Culture I would like to say thank you Usher now look what you have done please re-train your android

  • Anonymous

Not mad at Primo getting his name out and money doing what he does, from all angles...why not? If I was a hip hop producer, I'd work with a pop artist too, as long as he's paying what I ask for, and the finished product wouldn't tarnish my name or legacy.

  • Anonymous

wow what the fuck is wrong with hip-hop someone make a diss song in this industry and stop being bitches

  • wolfman

Whatever Primo! Just go get with Nas on this new album. Can't understand why he's not contributing to that with AZ back in connect. "Nas is Like!"

  • music is for life

like some of yall said it before, preem just being polite, bieber has to write in front of him. premo: Hes gotta sit there in front of me and write it. Id love to work with him and it would be dope. idk why some of yall hating bieber. singer wants to rap let him, it can be good or bad. whatever let him do it. same shit with kanye he wanted to sing use autotune. some yall like it cus its kanye anyways, smdh. artists trying experiment, music evolves. some experiments doesnt make sense, and it hurts the real craft. but it is what it is. like i knew dubsstep was nice couple years ago. now everyone trying put some flava of that. and people like it, its good people getting familiar with it. but if i introduced dubstep to certain friends couple years ago hey were like "nah this is bs" now they are like wobwobwob, dubstep is the shit. bunch of sheep

  • Anonymous

I will be honest. Justin Bieber can spit. I saw a radio freestyle. His rhymes of course were mostly half-ass material that Ludacris probably wrote. But he flowed real nice. I'll be truthful. But that being said, Bieber should write his own rhymes and they have to be really good in order for Premier to do a record with him. Every rapper knows that they gotta bring their best to Premier. Otherwise they ain't getting the beat.

    • Anonymous

How can you call somebody an idiot and not even type properly... Also, flowing to beats really isn't that easy, and writing lyrics is more effort then skill (although once you get on a certain level and for a certain amount of time it becomes skill.) No, I am not saying Justin Bieber is good though, the only time I heard him rap was covering for Lose Yourself and he butchered a classic.

    • no you're the fuckin idiot

Watch the video you idiot. Then see what I mean dumbass bitch.

    • your a fuckin idiot

u know how easy it easy to flow.... its about written ur own shit creation a flow...... anybody thats an emcee culd write 16 bars for sumone.. nd if they spit it how it was ment to be, as it was written, then it'll flow good............no skill nessasary

  • You guys are idiots

You guys can't read between the lines? Livin' in the basement ass niggas. I don't mind that Premo offers this to Bieber, because fact of the matter is Bieber CANT WRITE RHYMES and it be considered Hip Hop. Ever see it that way? SMH...

  • anonymous

damn u ppl are retarded... that was preems polite way of sayin hes never gonna work with him.... u think biebers ever actually gonna write his own shit?

  • Alex Mendoza

how do you go from working with artists like Blaq Poet and Apathy to teen pop faggots like Justin Bieber ??

    • Mecca

Heres some of the greater failures of his career: Preemo works with Christina Aguilera = Fans complain, Preemos account has more 0's in It. Preemo cosigns Wack Miller = Fans let It slide, Wack Miller fans celebrate. I notice as soon as the bet cypher article came up, the comments section blew up with comments from JB fans/young white girls. You can't complain, you know why cause in 2011 It "Hating"! Smh.

    • Anonymous

Dude Premo has done records with Jay, Game, Biggie, and Nas and they were all commercial. Premo does not care about mainstream shit. Whoever is ill is good for him. So you can't consider him a sellout. Second, the Christina Aguilera album was not that bad. It was refreshing. Third, he won't do a track with Bieber UNLESS Bieber writes some really sick-ass material. Why? Because this is Premo. And like I said, Premo only fucks with the best.

    • music is for life

that aguilera album was dope as fuck, well disc 1 was better than disc 2. only album of her i like, yeah i listened to her poppy albums didnt like them. music is my life not only hiphop, so yeah i listen to many stuff. stop listening in boxes, music is universal. but than back to basics was released it was fresh to me.some oldschool feeling, jazzy, blues, soul sound. and im not dickriding cus its premo, like some of yall doing that. "oh its pharrel, dre, premo, dilla, instantly its off the chain."

  • Preem is so wrong

Preem..you're wrong on this..Since when did Bieber become a rapper? Preem might be a great producer but you cannot turn Bieber to gold on the mic.
