Rakim Speaks On New Album, Praises Jay-Z & Eminem

The God MC hopes to put in studio time with DJ Premier and Pete Rock for his next LP.

Rakim has remained relatively silent since the release of 2009’s The Seventh Seal, but he’s ready to hit the lab to begin work on his next solo LP. Speaking with Complex.com, the God MC said that he’s been doing shows to stay occupied but that he’s about to start another album with hopes of working with DJ Premier and Pete Rock.

“I’ve got a few tracks and I’m working with some real important people on this one. I’m looking for some real good production. I’m trying to keep it on the low because I don’t think they really gonna expect some of the people that I’m working with. Hopefully, I’ll have some fun on it, make a few statements, and continue the legacy,” he said. “At the same time, I want to take it back to the roots with some of the cats that I love working with: DJ Premier, Pete Rock—some of them cats. I’m definitely not changing what I do, but just getting with a couple cats that people wouldn’t expect or people that I haven’t worked with before.”

He also spoke on rappers that he enjoys, naming Jay-Z and Eminem as a few of his favorites. “I’m a big fan of Jay-Z’s whole movement. I’m a big fan of Eminem. I’m a big fan of people like The LOX, Wu-Tang Clan, and different rappers like that. Just watching from afar, knowing where it came from, to see where it’s at now and see how rap impacts the world is unbelievable. It’s a good feeling to see that it’s still a major genre in music.”

Rakim = delusional crackhead who hasn't made a hot record since 1992.

  • Nico 3

Biggest mistake he made was not conforming to Dre. One album could have changed this whole guy's career. Instead he's just another talented vet struggling to find his place in today's hip hop landscape. Good luck. The odds are stacked againsn't you.

    • Anonymous

Dre has problems of his own bro and after hearing Seventh Seal...Rakim should probably retire...Rap is No Country for Old Men

    • Anonymous

what makes you think that was TRUE and not Rakim's bullshit excuses? what makes you think Dre had the answer to anything not named Em or 50? (Both of whom were well on their way without his steroid addicted ass.)

  • the G.O.D.

PEACE It's amazing how moronic are some of the comments posted up on here. Ra like every musician has had his ups and down and compare to most has refused to follow trends and I think the respect he shows Elmvis has to do with the fact that Elm does himself; ditto for Jay Personally, I don't listen to Elm but game recognizes game. cliched but true. As far as Ra's music goes, yeah, production on the last albums were weak but lyrics wise he's far ahead then these bubble gum and mush mouth, ABC rappers and to those questioning his legacy, put it like this money has influenced more mcs and rappers than your Jay, Elm, Pac etc.put together. PEACE

  • Real

Rakim, god Mc, aint nobody touching that cat right there, if he get some good production, album be off the chain plus no one can flow and spits like the god

  • Anonymous

Rakim get 9th wonder and madlib to do your shit then get a dilla track from ma dukes in detroit then you will have a dope album.

  • Marty

I'm a big fan and have ALL his records. But just like G Rap, Ice-T and other classics - his latest music is really weak! Rakim's last album ain't good, especially cuz it took so long until it came out...

  • Em>>>>>>>>>>>>Jay z+ Kanye West+Roc Nation as a whole.

Ra is a big Em fan, He even called him the Mohammed Ali of Rap music.

  • Em>>>>>>>>>>>>Jay z+ Kanye West+Roc Nation as a whole.

Stop putting Em and that washed up Jay-z in the same line. Em shits all over Jay. Jay is easily the most overrated Rapper of all times, literally. Jay is/had/has/never been or even dared to reach Em's level of brilliance !!!!

  • Anonymous

The genre got so big and diversity bought change to the way people listened to the music. It became a multimillion dollar habit. With most of these alternative hip hop groups out today it's hardly recognizeable, making an alternative music which is rap normal pop and slowly banishing the real heads like rakim.

  • ethered

Name one rapper Rakim haven't influenced. I dare you guys, just name one. His solo career may not have been as successful as his time with Eric B., but just through Nas, Jay-Z, Kane, and Eminem alone, we've already seen the influence he has had on Hip-Hop today and the way we rap.

  • im back

And really, b4 u faggots crucify me, I dont really like Wayne that much since No ceilings. Personally, All the music in the 90s is complete shit besides the Illmatic, Reasonable Doubt, and some 2pac(Biggie is a fat ass and I cant get into him but I tried). The beats are horrid. Lil Wayne is the best and one of the best of all-time at what he does. Sell Hip Hop records.

    • Anonymous

The 80's and 90's were the golden era, if you cant see that, your loss

    • Anonymous

faggot is your first name if you think lil wayne is the best! you dont feel b.I.G. then you must like kiddie lollypop rap homo. Yall kids dont feel the 90's music cause its more mature style.stick to your lil wayne

    • rs1

I wouldn't say crucified, but that's fucking retarded, "lil wayne" and all these garbage pop-rappers today are a complete disgrace to the actual hip hop of the 80s and 90s. They make disposable gimmick "music" for retarded kids. "Rain on my head, call that brainstorming"? Fucking pathetic.

  • You guys are faggots, really go away

Please all of you shut the fuck up with all that Lil wayne is whack and this person is whack shit. Hip Hop is all about progression. People like what they like. Lil Wayne is on top of the rap game for a reason. Rakim hasn't been hot since 90s for a reason. Like Jay-Z said, if you want old shit then go buy there old album. if you want to compare artist without lien, use numbers. thats why old cats respect dudes like Lil Wayne. When Jay-Z disses Lil wayne he doesn't say my songs are better than yours, he says he got a baby money lol. Greatness is Success and influence. You cannot say your great when u sold 2 albums lol. In conclusion: Women Lie, Men Lie, Numbers Don't(jayz voice)

    • rs1

He's not on top of shit, other than a bunch of teeny boppers who would have been buying Nstync or backdoor boys 10 years ago. Teenagers buy shitty, gimmicky, music b/c MTV and radio tells them to.

    • Fuck off

First off. This is not twitter so gtfo with your hastags and go on that garbage site and suck dick for followers. That is a terrible analogy. Docors salary is fixed. Tell me what do they rap for? if records dont matter than they should give away their album for free. numbers are fact and you cannot lie. Quality is preference. someone can argue that 2pac is one of the worst rappers of all-time and you cant prove them wrong. yeah you can say that rakim sold 200 billion albums but c'mon now , you are u foolin. according to your logic, i can make an album right now and sell it to my mom and dad then say Im the best rapper.

    • Anonymous

In this currupt world today, you could sell your fucking ass and say the same dumass thing!!!

  • The B

meant to say stays up to date

  • The B

Im a old school nigga who stats up to date on his shit, and Rakim is my man, I wish these 80s and early/mid 90s rappers would try to form a distribution company and some other things for hiphop and trying to still make records. Most of them will never sound like they used to with the exception of a very select few.

    • Drunken Master

You have a point. The real problem is the wider hip hop audience not giving chances to young people that want to carry on the tradition of hip hop that comes from the heart. We all have a responsibility to buy the cd's of any solid hip hop rapper that wants to push the boundaries of creativity, lyricism, production technique and turntablism. And no, odd future and young money do not incorporate any of these practises, they are rehash of styles many true fans of the genre do not want to see return (at the hands of fools who no nothing of rap history) whether it be horrorcore or 808 southern style. We need to avoid bootlegging the real shit and demand that the independents stop making exclusive deals so that the cd's can be distributed properly. It will take the efforts of everyone that ever considered themselves a true fan of the genre but It is not an impossible task.

SO IF MOSTLY WHITES BUY ALL THE CDS AND GO TO SHOWS AND SUPPORT HIP-HOP SO MUCH, WHY IS IT ONLY BLACKS ONLINE WHO ARE HATING AND RACIST? ISN'T IT MOSTLY THE SUBURB WHO Y'ALL SAY BUY WAYNE AND DRAKE CD'S? SO WHY DO YOU THINK ALL OF A SUDDEN IT'S A BUNCH OF HOOD BLACKS TALKING LIKE THAT ABOUT THOSE SAME TWO RAPPERS IN THE COMMENTS?

  • Anonymous

and for ethical YOU SO COOL, HAVE YOU SEEN THE YELAWOLF THREAD? WHY YOU NOT SPEAKING ON YOUR BRETHREN POSTING AS BLACK PEOPLE SAYING RACIST THINGS? OH YEAH, THEY DO THAT OFTEN HERE FOR GIGGLES. EMINEM HAS WAY MORE RESPECT FOR RA THAN EM'S FANS DO. NAS DON'T THINK RA IS JEALOUS OF HIM JUST AS MUCH AS RA AIN'T JEALOUS OF NAS. THAT'S Y'ALL GOSSIPING SAYING ALL OF THAT. YOU AIN'T NEVER HAD A PROBLEM WITH A FRIEND OR A SIBLING BECAUSE YOU DIDN'T LIKE WHAT THEY DID? DID THAT MEAN YOU WERE AND ARE JEALOUS?

  • Manuel Berrios

Rakim is the man, but the Seventh Seal is a weed plate at best. Hopefully he remembers what got him where he is.

  • Anonymous

Oh and people be forgetting who Rakim was. Everyone knows Biggie and Pac, but it kinda annoys me when people don't even know who Nas or Rakim or Kool G rap (insert any underrated legend here) even is. I'm not really a Rakim fan, but he's a pioneer and deserves respect, and recognition.

    • Anonymous

      G. Rap did a song with Haylie Duff...need I say more?

    • Anonymous

Kool G. Rap is the best lyricist to ever do it!! Never made anything wack.

    • Anonymous

Kool G. Rap hasn't done shit worth listening to since 1992 either-- "Live And Let Die" was amazing but he's been a shadow of that ever since. And like Rakim, a DUMB shadow, though I suspect it's more alcohol with G. Rap, and cocaine decisions with Rakim.

  • Anonymous

People might get top comments on nas, az, big l, etc youtube vids saying "Eminem is a wack pop rapper" or "Jay-Z is garbage" but the legendary rappers know whats up. Quit judging mainstream rappers off singles and realize these dudes are actually amazing.

    • Anonymous

I'm just saying people are disrepecting legends while their favorite rappers are giving them praise. Kinda bugs me. And to the dude above, when did i say Jay was better then L? Although he is higher on my top 10 list, but that's only cause Jay got a much bigger catalog. Which really isn't Ls fault but..

    • Anonymous

Who cares what people say on Youtube You got to a youtube page and see 100,000 views for a canibus song and then realize his last 6 albums combined havent sold half that, nobody cares whats said on youtube

    • Crooklyn

Jay Z isnt garbage, hes just not as good as Big L. Never has been. Comments like those are popular on youtube for good reason.

  • Rick

You know I give Ra his props but he needs to either drop some CLASSIC's soon or he will just do damage to his legendary status. I mean dude needs to hook up with GREAT producers. Not just some new cats that are no names. He should hook up with just Blaze....that would be fucking SICK!

    • eric b

rakim fell off beat with his rapping tempo and j and m never did rap on beat so it figures. rah is one of my all time favs but i'll definitely reconsider after that belated cosigning of to of the top stars in the game you r trying to get back in. don't ask for return of the throne, overthrow them dudes

    • Anonymous

What does what he's doing no take away from Paid In Full or Follow the Leader?? He's made classic records and impacted the game in a way thatnobody could ever take away from him He could make his entire next record in Auto Tune with Lil Jon Screamin "OOOKKKAAYY" for the hook on every song and it wouldnt take away from his legacy Once you've made history, its there for ever, doesnt matter what he's doin today

  • dAtdUde

After reading the comments, it's easy to see what commenters on this blog are, that is a bunch of uneducated, cowardly youth with a false sense of entitlement and lack of respect. I realize most of the posters here missed out on the brilliance of Rakim poetry and probably don't care about his new work, but why the hate. It's called respect the architects. Imagine dissing Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Jimi Hendrix, Led Zepplin, Stones, Beatles, Van Halen, etc and then only giving praises to Green Day, Nirvana, Sloan, Lady Gaga, etc. I guarantee if Kanye or NO ID produced his next record it would be better than 99% of the ish that's out today!! The sad part of what I wrote is that most of the posters are here lack the critical thinking skills to figure it out. They act as if posting comments is a battle and props are given to the loser who can post the most disparaging remarks.

    • BlazeDatIshUp

I agree with everything you said. It's unfortunate that most won't get what you are trying to say. They will just come up with a slew of ignorant comments to write about a legendary artist who paved the way for these rappers they shell out money for today. The mentality of these commenters and most of the youth buying albums these days is just plain fucked.

  • Anonymous

Rakim hasn't done shit worth listening to 1992. Nas had made a few missteps (dogshit The Firm being the worst) but he was hot with "Illmatic" and he's still fucking great with "Nasty." Eric B. had the power!

  • Anonymous

So who here actually knows that Ra is jealous of Nas? Up the interview link or C&P it if it's true. Until then your comments read like gossiping girls at a pajama party playing with Barbie dolls. Just remember when you argue with some troll who types so & so is a homo and a fag, that person most likely looks like Justin Bieber or Mac Miller thinking they know Hip Hop.

''you think your down'' lol what does that even mean? down with who? black people? hip hop? ...and what the word nigga is a racist word again now??? fucking hell we all about to step back in time and de-evolve here, i cant even bother to explain how stupid u sound G. i dont fuck wit u nazi discriminative motherfuckers

AND THE LAST COMMENT IS PRIME EXAMPLE, SOME IDIOT SAYING RA NEEDS TO BOW DOWN TO EM JUST BECAUSE EM SOLD RECORDS, WHEN THIS IDIOT SEEMS TO FORGET RA & EM WERE ON THE SAME LABEL AND HAVE MET EACH OTHER AND HAVE DONE RECORDS TOGETHER WE HAVEN'T HEARD YET!

    • Anonymous

Sure he is just looking at mainstream rappers and giving some respect. The hip pop audience wants you to sing jigga!! before you can actually sell a single unit, and must pay respects to eminem(being white) who sells more records than a million rappers grinding in this game for decades, all of them put together!

    • four ethical pitfalls

basicly this guy's view is I HATE WHITE PEOPLE Mate i'm from london and here are some facts for your raggedy dick sucking buckteeth to flamboyantly suck on; about half my friends are white and half black, ALL of my black friends are into hip hop to a certan degree but as a whole they tend to like LIL WAYNE, GAME, DRAKE, WAKA FLOKA, WIZ KALIFA, and WALE. And they hate my taste in hip hop and always try to fuck wit me but never are able to cuz a motherfucker like me, i speak with conviction and will make a motherfucker look like a fool if i want to, but... i'm a peaceful brother. The shit i rock wit is BONE THUGS, LUPE, OL' DIRTY, DMX, MOP, GANGSTARR, NAS, PETE ROCK, MF DOOM, APOP ROCK, DIGABLE PLANETS, FUGEES, TUPAC, KING TEE, CELPH TITLED, IMMORTAL TEK... the list goes on. so before you come wit some ignnorant racist shit on a website thats meant to be dedicated to a music that is racially indifferent, think about what your hypocritical ass is doing and what it makes you look like! Id love to see you say this type of shit in my presence... i'd slap the taste outta ya mouth! thoughtfully, your friendly neighbourhood white guy.

I respect Ra, but Seventh Seal was complete garbage (except for the opening track...I remember that being aight). He was pretty hot in the 90's too, but I won't be at all excited about this new record unless he gets some good production and ups his lyrical game from the last record.

  • Ra is homo

Nas gives this faggot all the props in the world and I've never heard dude show love to him before. He even dissed Nas a while back and said he didnt like the tribute song he did for him...Like Fredie Foxx said, this nigga is bitter and jealous of Nas success. smh Akways has been....And it's a shame cause he's Nas' idol.

Nas being Nas and the influence given, and the love shown back, from groups like wu tang and nas, has given rakim the path to make a comeback, time and time again.

    • Anonymous

Eminem and Jay-Z are not considered to be the second coming of Rakim...Nas is..And Nas has been more successful then Ra. That's why he doesn't like Nas and gives props to Jay and Em...He's not just hating on any rich rapper. He doesnt like Nas because Nas is the intelligent rapper who is also rich and famous...He reached a level that Ra himself couldn't reach. He's been jealous of him since Nas came out, real talk

    • Anonymous

Dont you think if Rakim was jealous of Nas he would be jealous of Eminem and Jay? They have had twice the commercial success Nas has...That's a dumb argument

    • kay

You are so right. I think his problem is that people called nas the second coming of Rakim from back in the day, but Nas has enjoyed more commercial success than him, and nas is still relevant, and maybe that pisses him off.

    • comachonvargas

@ Ra is a homo; got to cosign you man Nas dropped an ill tribute to Ra and he fronted like it was disrespectful to mention Ra's daughter or recount his career. Nas would easily claim Ra as a GOAT contender because he pays homage more than any other great MC, always has as a matter of fact. But Nas talked about getting studio sessions from Ra when he was coming up, and yet Ra didn't even help the dude get signed. MC Serch had to do that. Even though Nas was heavily influenced by Ra, he is a better artist and that is the truth. More successful, just as influential, more creative, and just as respected. Nas has the better discography too. This is the second time recently that Ra has cosigned Jay and other artists without any mention of Nas. Not saying he has to give Nas props every minute, but isn't it funny that he ignores the MC who he practically mentored? Suspect man And dude ^^^^; It Was Written goes toe for toe with your favorite rapper's best CD, and that is like Nas' third best disc behind Lost Tapes and Illmatic... eat a dick

co sign Nas escobar was the fake Rick Ross from the 90's with no criminal record. lmfao

    • Broward County

The Barrier Brothers were "allegedly" the biggest dope dealers in Wyandanch, Long Island back in the day. Eric Barrier, a.k.a. Eric B. executive produced Paid in Full. That means he financed the recording, artwork, and duplication. In exchange for his financing the record as Executive Producer, Rakim let him pose as his DJ, giving Eric B. an "in" in the music business. The truth is, with the exception of "My Melody" and "Eric B. is President", which were produced by Marley Marl, Rakim produced all of Paid in Full himself. Eric B doesn't really start producing until "Follow the Leader". You say Rakim has never had a dope record without Eric B.... exactly how many records has Eric B. had without Rakim???

While I have'nt been amazed at Rakim's work for a long period, it sadden's me to see that Ra gets the highest respect from crtics, but doors have not swung open for him like other rappers from the 80s and 90s to acheive financial gains and become a real boss figure of some type. Rakim brought spirituality to hip hop and promoted knowlegde of self for us to overstand that knowledge is power. I guess the real poor righteous teachers get black balled in this industry for opening their mouth and speaking the truth, thats why we should always support real talent and stop jumping on the mainstream dicks.

Even with his newer material, Rakim has always been criticized for using sub-par production. I still think joints like "Guess Who's Back" and "It's Been a Long Time" off The 18th Letter were great listens, couple tracks off Seventh Seal also... Should show that with the right tracks backing him, at least to heads who appreciate his style, can still get good music from Ra. There are plenty who can dig it, despite the current music landscape.. To the commenters on either side of the issue, to me it seems stupid to think we can't live in a world where Young Money AND Rakim are making music for their respective audiences.

  • vest

even if rakim fell off, and was rapping through a voice box, hed still be a better rapper than lil gay. any rakim verse destroys any young money verse. any rakim verse is better than drakes whole career. ever rakim album is a classic if you like to hear skill rap that requires skill. even the master shits on any rick ross album.

Turntables spin like a merry-go-round Never slow down, depending on how good your stereo sounds Set it, up in the hood where we go surround Tearin' through towns, turn 'em into burial grounds

Rakim is the actual real true GOD MC. He was Nas' mentor. You know as good as Paid in Full was, (came out the year i was born 86) I love THE MASTER. what a cd you ever heard the song REAL SHIT? that is the definition of a classic hip hop song. and the wordplay? it's fucking amazing. i'm blasting that right now. That ol' real shit.

    • hudes

he's called GOD MC because of his poetry not his fucking success. And because of what type of lyrics he actually spits. They are about bettering yourself mixed with surviving in the hood. He's the one who introduced multi-syllable rhyming. Him, Kane, and Kool G Rap. Without them 3, No NAS, no Eminem, and for sure no gay ass Jay Z

what's this 'god' bullshit-- Rakim has sucked dog balls since 1992. is he was god then, what is he now? besides some nearly crack-head looking mumblemouth.

    • Anonymous

Real fucking has-been; who knows what Eric B. actually did but Rakim ain't been 1/10th the rapper ever since they split.

    • Rival X Jordan

all well respected rappers respect eminem. from jay-z to nas to rakim, have you ever heard anyone really respected in the rap game not give eminem props. just like rakim and wu tang they get respect just like eminem does, its the nobodies like ja rule, benzino, canibus that diss eminem and look where their careers are

    • Anonymous

      CANIBUS IS NOT A NOBODY

    • vg

its so fucking annoying being an Eminem fan, when other fans bring up stupid shit like "album sales" who gives a shit about sales? that doesn't mean anything. Like the man said some people just don't like him, thats his opinion, just like you might not like his favorite rapper. Not everyone is liked

    • dony

Vanila ice was the most successful rapper up to the point when he was out(going by sales)so what i'm saying is plenty of us don't buy it 100%

    • Kod

Washed up? sold out arenas in and out of US? lol last album sold millions? lol

    • dan

you crazy, Eminem is not washed up..this man can still rap circles around the "so called rappers" that's out 2day..he still going platinum with his albums.

    • L-Boogie

Eminem is washed up now, where u been at man.

    • @dony

your fuckin stupid... the greatest MC of all time respects Em, and u call him overrated... you have never heard a slim shady song in ur life if you label him as an upgraded vanilla ice.... shit hes the most successful rapper of all time

    • dony

Who gives a fuck about eminem. Seriously he been a great white hope, sells tons of units in the first week. A lot of white people can relate to what he's spitting, but not everyones taste, as opposed to an up graded vanilla ice, but very, very much overated!

  • YADIG

AN OLD WASHED UP NIGGA PRAISING OTHER OLD WASHED UP NIGGAS IT'S NOTHING NEW... YOUNG MONEY!!!

    • Smif-N-Wessun

@Broward county, I completely disagree with your analogy. First off, alot of this shit were seeing in hip hop goes beyond age division. Theres a large demographic of young people that like real hip hop. Your like 42 so most dudes your age are still heavily into Jazz, Soul and Funk etc. In as much as theres an extemely large group of pop fans that want Cole, Drake and others to run Hip Hop, there are hundreds of thousands that would like to see real shit resurface. Why for example was Celph Titled and Buckwilds album so critically acclaimed? It embodied the spirit of the golden age, solid material, no gimmick rap. What were hearing today is not our generations interpretation of rap, Its the fat cat execs interpretation that has been around for years but was only just given a chance to dominate all forms of music. If you were wise you would know this.

@J.J. dog, just cuz someone supports cash money doesnt mean they gta love the whole crew, maybe they like Weezy so they wanna support his label as well, but that dont mean they gotta go out and buy Birdman Cd's..but then again maybe some will simply for the lil wayne features. Remember when G-Unit ran the shit? Plenty of people liked 50 and Banks but not Buck or Game, but they still repped G-unit cuz thats their favourite rappers crew

    • Broward County

Although I'm 42, and should be offended by your comment, I actually almost agree with you. I love Paid in Full, and Don't Sweat the Technique. But at this point, I'm not really interested in a new Rakim album- nor, I imagine, are the 15-24 year-old's that the music business is designed to entertain. I'm all for him making records. I'm just not sure I want to hear anything new from Rakim, or any other Golden Age MC. It's the kids turn to enjoy their own interpretation of hip-hop.

    • J.J.

YMCMB dickriders just love yelling out YMCMB and supporting Wayne Drake and Nicki. Yet, they wont support Birdman or the other members of YMCMB that they claim is running shit. How can a group of ppl be running shit if only 3 members are going Platinum? How can you say YMCMB when you only prolly bought Wayne Drake and Nickis album? Bandwagon ass fans just wanna be associated with whats hot. YMCMB is only hot because of 3 ppl, therefore your only gonna buy 3 albums from 3 ppl and let the other 15 artist flop. Then have the audacity to say they winning. Lmao. YMCMB fans are a trip.
