Yelawolf Speaks On White Rappers Using The N-Word

Catfish Billy slams white rappers who use the epithet and "embarrass white people."

After V-Nasty caught flack for casually flinging around the N-word, Yelawolf recently spoke on white rappers' use of the epithet and how it embarrasses white people in general. Speaking with Vlad TV, the Alabama native said that he was raised not to use the word and that those who employ it are only making themselves out to be fools.

"I’m from the South. That shit don’t fly. And in Alabama, put it this way. There are grandparents alive today whose parents went through a war. We’re just out of the slave trade. It’s very real situation," he said. "You don’t take that shit lightly, especially Hip Hop and American music culture is black culture. Don’t ever get it fucked up. Know your roots, know where the fuck you’re getting this music from and respect it. And don’t embarrass white people and white rappers by doing that dumb shit, by dropping the N-bomb and thinking you’re all cool and shit. You’re going to find yourself slapped up and it might be by a white boy. Because you ain’t gonna embarrass me around my people like that."

He continued by explaining that there are still racial tensions in the United States and that the use of the word goes deeper than rap. "We’re not very far away from real-life problems. Obama is the president, but it doesn’t mean that less than 50 years ago, people were getting… People are still getting mobbed. It ain’t no joke, man. Certain people have the birthright to use that word. I don’t know. As a white rapper, it’s always been a big no-no, but as a human being, it’s been an even bigger no-no."

"Certain people have the birthright to use that word." Yelawolf is wrong, nobody has a birth right to use that word. His message is adequate but it shouldn't only apply to white people/white rappers. it should apply to all people, period. if we going by birth rights i'm a descendant of Irish slaves that were brought to the US in part of the slave trade, my ancestors were called "white n*ggers* so by birth right its okay for me to use it because I'm a descendant of a people enslaved by the slave trade, wrong. its a word of belittlement and insulting I don't like its use by anybody, period.

Lets get this clear. Whites used the word and STILL use it to slander and demeanor Blacks. They will NEVER be able to say it BECAUSE of the past and WHAT THEY USED TO DO TO BLACKS WHILE THEY USED THE WORD. No matter how HIP or COOL you think you are because you listen to rap music, Whites KNOW if they use it around the wrong crowd there will be problems, just like Yelawolf said. How am I right? Look at the COMMENTS brothers. We don't say cunt or fucktard, those are WHITES. And the brothers saying it's OK, just know your ancestors are turning in their graves because THEY went thru it. YOU CAN STILL GET RESPECT FROM YOUR PEERS WITHOUT YOU ALLOWING THEM TO USE A WELL KNOWN RACIAL SLUR IN YOUR FACE. They would probably respect you MORE if you stood up and said don't use it. Props to Yelawolf for seeing REAL LIFE and not falling for the nonsense. Again, to you whites sitting on here asking why can't you use the word? YOUR ANCESTORS AND MOST LIKELY YOU HAVE BEEN DOING IT FOR CENTURIES IN A F****D UP WAY, THAT'S WHY YOU CAN'T SAY IT. And you KIDS stop giving them passes, no matter how LONG ago segregation was, even though it wasn't that LONG AGO that things changed, that the HISTORY should be forgotten. We see you white boys playing around on here. GO THRU the pages of comments and see the subliminal racism and ASK YOURSELF AGAIN WHY OR WHY NOT IT CAN'T BE USED.

Real Talk, I have no problem with my white friends (Im black) using the n-word if we are singing along to Hip-hop songs. I even say it if I am reciting the lines to a hip-hop song. But it ends right there. I don't use the word in a casual manner and I damn sure am not going to let my white (latinio/asian) whatever friends use it in some casual manner. But if they are just quoting a song, that is not a personal display of tryin' to use the word. Matter fact when I hear white people tryin to use it in personal ways. They sound stupid, cuz they surbanites that don't understand the "struggle" of the hood and real nigga shit. They sound lame, phony, and like others have said like idiots. They can say whatever, cuz Im not gon' fuck with them types at all. My fam don't fault to hard for me to be treated like a human being.

  • niggaz in france...

so i love rap music and when jay z or whoever plays at my home town and i got all his discs and i pay for a ticket to the show i got all the lines memorized and when everyone is singing along i supposed to mute when he says nigga what nigga who hell no don't write it and don't say it if you don't want others to do the same claiming a word is practically racism. Also in the store i can see crackers real big on a box and buy it. That doesn't bother me. Maybe some one should start packaging niger toes and put them on them shelf niggy.

So African American's were discriminated against for their skin. They couldn't do such things like use certain bathrooms, water fountains, etc. etc. Now they want to claim a word & call it racist if another person's ethnicity is not theirs & they use it?? Sounds familiar doesn't it. When will we grow from this bullshit? I guess never.

  • WhiteDude

yo listen, im a white dude from queens, and not just me, but white ppl shuldnt say the word, period. yeah sure i got plenty of my boys r black they call me their nigga or whatever... aint nothin wrong wit it, and have i before called em my nigga yeah maybe a couple times...but its my best boys u feel me..... theres no fuckin reason and no excuse for a white person, or anybody that isnt black latinos whatever, to use the n word at all talkin to each other or even in music... its unacceptable nd u look like a fuckin idiot real talk

    • Elmer Fuddere

      Go outside...test that theory repeatedly

    • theCoolestniggaWhat

Assassin hit the nail on the head. and I'm still rofl from that Yelawolf beatdown line hahaha. 'Nigga' isn't a problem for anyone unless some black person dislikes whoever is saying it. Its a fuckin' word. What is this grade school? Don't say it in a racist manner and don't get offended by it if its clearly being brought up in a non-discriminating way. Racism is Schism motherfuckers. Martin Luther King Jr. would be rolling in his grave to see how far we, as a society, have come just to watch us flip everything around and start hating again. People need to grow up and shut up. ...nigga

    • Assassin221

Yet you just admitted you use the word with your best boys, so what makes you so damn special? Everybody wants to draw this line but nobody wants to explain it, it's kind of an arbitary rule in this cultural climate. And if you want to talk about looking like an idiot, watch a white person (or anybody for that matter) try to rap along to DMX WITHOUT using the n-word. I'm not really trying to use the word so hip-hop songs are only time it affects me personally, but that shit is annoying as hell. It's like a big red button with a "DO NOT PUSH" sign by it, except if you push it nothing happens. Except, apparently, a beatdown if you're in Yelawolf's vicinity.

  • DezPrez

Yelawolf is dead on wit that shit. 4 the people who think that just because black people use the word excessivly, or that they can use it while quoting rap lyrics, You do not get it. It doesnt fuckin matter if blacks use the word more. If you arn't black you shouldnt say it reguardless...It's like if you get a whuppin from ya moms for doing some bad shit, it's alright, but if you got whupped by a random fuckin stranger for doing the same, it would piss your mom the fuck off. She'd be like aint nobody gon touch my child but me. Same goes for the N-word. If you aint black, it isn't cool. Don't say that shit

  • Assassin221

I don't know, man, I don't use the word because I don't want to step on any toes, but honestly the whole N-word controversy in 2011 is kind of a joke to me. There's no magical color line that makes a word cool for one person to say and racist for another person. It's all about context and this dynamic where white people can own every hip-hop album ever made but people act all shocked if they accurately quote the lyrics makes no damn sense. Yeah, I know the word has a history, but we're not living in history and the word is used way different now than it was even a few decades ago. I don't buy that anyone has a "birthright" to use it, people just flipped it to casual usage. You can't use a word all the time knowing millions of people will hear it, and expect it to still have shock value. Not to mention saying the word has a history doesn't explain why non-black minorities who weren't part of that history use it and seem to get a pass. Nobody ever wants to talk about that. So I guess Yelawolf's point was well-said but it's not anything revolutionary and really doesn't clear anything up for me.

    • HAHA

Exactly!! As big has hip-hop has become & how often people hear this word, some people still act like it's all shocking when another race uses it. People need to understand that these artist are using this word all the time, & making money from these white people (as well other races)& they expect them not to quote them. If these artist don't want another race to using it, then they need to take action & be responsible for what they say. Don't yell this word out on all your records & then not expect the people buying your music, being influenced by your music, to not quote you. Some of these artist need to realize that they become role models in people's life.

  • Anonymous

At last! A white person chatting sense for once and not a douche or some idiotic black person thinking he is smart but chatting pure BS.

  • yerrrr

For someone who grew up in the south its fine to feel that way, and I respect it 100% but growing up in cities like NYC, OAKLAND, LA etc the words gets throw around like nothing becuase big cities are diverse and they moved on from that. Places in the south are still racist in some areas so its different for them. I mean if you hang out around black people and u all use the word then I think u just stick to using that around urpeople but dont go using it in songs or on interviews when u talking because some people are sensitive to that and it def has affected some peoples lives or parents and grand parents of those kids etc the funny part about this is that yela wolf or this dumb ass reporter just kinda started a beef between this white chick and all her black friends who support her in rap from oakland and the bay and this dude whos just keeping it real based on where he GREW UP

Yelawolf has a new fan. He is speaking more real than alot of black celebs like charlamagne tha god lil duval angela yee and dj envy all said they dont care about whites using the n-word. Angela Yee gets mad when someone talks about asian people and she calls that racist but when they talk about whites using the n-word they dont care. The argument was what is worse for the black community whites using the n-word or other things but how does Donkey of the Day help the black community if you want to dance around the topic actually nothing that morning show does outside of charity work actually helps the black community. The rest of the show is just celebrating ignorance. I hope Yelawolf goes platinum when his album drops.

  • Doubl Negative

Don't know about dude's music, but that was a sage response to the white-rappers' usage of the word nigger question. Outside of hip-hop white people can get away with using the epithet; Tarantino, Kubrick, Scorsese, James Elroy and Patti Smith (Rock 'N Roll Niggers) have the word littered around their work with little controversy, but like dude said hip-hop's still a Black art-form/culture. I agree with the other dude on this board who rightly pointed out most bloggers on this site are bigoted white middle-class teens who only come here to jack off to pictures of Eminem and other melanin-deficient emcees. Sometimes I think the "DX" in this site's title stands for "Dick-ridin' Xenophobes".

Sadly enough we are still at a point where we give people credit for doing what they are suppose to do. I applaud Yela in a very subtle way, but respect generally isnt dished out for things that you are "supposed to do." Obviously the old throwback is the Chris Rock "'I take care of my kids' 'well, you are SUPPOSED TO'" I guess the newest one I am getting sick of is "Im a non-violent Muslim." Lol, oh, congrats on that one, quite the accomplishment....Look, I cant blame Yela if some reporter asked him the question. At the same time, Im from Maryland where the white people I know would not even think to say the N-bomb. Might be a different story in Alabama though....
