Hip Hop Album Sales: The Week Ending 7/31/2011

Wu-Tang's second posse album in three years made a splash on the charts, while Jay Rock's solo debut also appeared, as Black Rob failed to make the Top 200 for the first time in his career.

A second compilation from one of Hip Hop's most legendary groups made a strong impression on the charts, as did a Watts, California emcee who's been patiently waiting for close to five years. Notably absent is Black Rob, who released his third solo album, and first independent work last week.

Beyonce's album 4 is knocking on 600,000 units sold. The Destiny's Child alum's fourth solo offering features an appearance by Outkast's Andre 3000, along with production from Kanye West and his production team - including Jeff Bhasker, as well as a writing credit to former G.O.O.D. Music artist Consequence.

Royce Da 5'9 and Eminem as Bad Meets Evil and their album, Hell: The Sequel climbed a spot, remaining Top 10. As of now, the Motor City natives are gradually approaching 400,000 units sold, potentially en route to earning Royce his first plaque from the RIAA.

DJ Khaled's major label debut, We The Best Forever continued to hold a high mark on the charts, at #13. The Miami, Florida-based radio personality, deejay and producer is working with Cash Money/Universal Motown Records on this project in lieu of longtime label E1 Entertainment (f/k/a Koch Records). Khaled's latest features the usual suspects of Lil Wayne, Young Jeezy and Rick Ross, as well as Drake and B.o.B.

Jill Scott saw almost an exact replication of her sales from the previous week. As of now, the Philadelphia, Pennsylvania powerhouse stands triumphant with Light of the Sun, which touts guest appearances from Paul Wall, Eve, Doug E. Fresh, Anthony Hamilton and more.

G.O.O.D. Music's latest artist, Detroit, Michigan's Big Sean, which slid two spots to #28.  Finally Famous: The Album was largely produced by longtime Common mentor No I.D., and featured appearances from DXnext alumni Chiddy Bang and Wiz Khalifa, along with Lupe Fiasco.

A follow-up to 2009's Chamber Music, RZA and Wu-Tang Records released another E1 compilation in Legendary Weapons. Not to be confused as an official Clan album, this work, produced by Funk outfit The Revelations, along with guidance from RZA, featured Sean Price, Roc Marciano and Action Bronson, in addition to Method Man, Raekwon, Ghostface Killah, U-God and Inspectah Deck. Masta Killa and GZA did not participate.

Watts, California emcee and DXnext alum Jay Rock debuted at #77 with his album, Follow Me Home. Released on Tech N9ne's Strange Music label, the longtime Warner Brothers/Top Dawg Entertainment artist moved to the independent last year. With production by the J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League, FMH features TDE label-mate Kendrick Lamar, Krizz Kaliko and Chris Brown.

Speaking of, Tech N9ne continues to enjoy the best commercial year to date in his patient, 15-plus year career. The Kansas City, Missouri emcee has taken All 6's & 7's close to 120,000 units, which is still holding a Top 100 spot on the charts. The album features Lil Wayne, Yelawolf and Kendrick Lamar, among others. Yesterday, Tech's Strange Music released Jay Rock's debut album, Follow Me Home.

OFWGKTA's Tyler, The Creator is fast-approaching 100,000 units sold with his May release, Goblin. The first nationally-distributed release from the Los Angeles, California native was released on XL Records, and includes the MTV VMA nominee's Internet-hit single "Yonkers."

Perhaps in its final week on the charts, Rick Ross' Teflon Don sits at #197. With a year and two weeks on the charts consecutively, the acclaimed Def Jam/Maybach Music Group release featured Jay-Z, Cee-Lo and Drake.

Lupe is prolly on 450,000 records now, doing approximately 5k a week. At this rate, he only needs like 20-30 weeks before he cracks gold...

  • Da1

Damn Beyonce you bricking. She better release another single the one with Andre 3000 on it or she's not going to get a platinum plaque at this rate. Big Sean hang it up bruh. Eminem and Royce will go gold and Rick Ross looking good.

LEGENDARY WEAPONS WAS WACK THAT SHIT WILL HURT THE WU-TANG BRAND

    • Jason Williams

@Santiago you going in for the Wu LOL. @Aint your entitled to your opinion on the album, but WU-TANG's brand is everlasting. Its similiar to Pepsi as long as the keep the main core ingredients they can do alot. Ex. Pepsi Max/Diet Pepsi. No matter what certain people like it and will support it blindly. Legendary Weapon's def. isn't a project on the level of Shaolin Vs Wu-Tang but its a solid addition to their catalog.

  • shady

Bad meets evil nd follow me home r the albums to buy, if u like any other artisy or watever, just download the fck ot of it LOL

  • Nico 3

The Black Rob album wasn't bad, but it lacked polish. Still, you would have thought at least 3,4 thousand people would have been curious.

    • Chairman

3 or 4 thousand people might have copped it had the label shipped that many units to outlets. Being an indie label in these tough economic times, and where nobody sells records anymore, they couldn't take a chance on duplicating that many units. Record stores likewise weren'tlikely to order the product to sit on thier shelves. If his first run sells, and he catches a street buzz, he'll move more units.

    • Powerphi

You hit it right on point - no polish on the album whatsoever. The rhymes are there, but the production while not wack, if just not polished. And with no production, it tanked out the box.

  • rick ross the bawse

we gonn hit that millie status in 2015 ugh rozayyyyyyyy m m m m m m maybach musik bawseeeeeeeeeeeeee rozayyyyyyyyy

  • Torey Rainey

Officer Ricky still not platinum lol. He's never went platinum yet portrays this outrageous image, ok. Uh oh DJ Khaled 74,000 smh. Man go get that Royce Da 5'9" album 'Success Is Certain'

  • JOE6PACKNCGBOR336

  • Tim Wilkens

I find it funny that DX acknowledges Legendary Weapons as a compilation here, but didn't in their negative review of it.

  • E.j. Rupert

Black Rob's album came out? Good promotion, Duck Down...

  • DAM

WU TANG HAS MILLIONS OF FANS (ALLEDGEDLY) AND THEY ONLY SELL 10,000 UNITS!??? YALL ARE FULL OF SHIT!!!...

    • Anonymous

pretty sure most wu fans dont even know this album dropped

    • Anonymous

The Wu-Tang fanbase is in the millions worldwide but if u add up all of the Wu-Tang Branded albums there are like 50 of them. So U expect every fan to by every single album even when its a compilation? Check the Wu Catalog and album sales its in the 40-50 million range so ur really not making sense

    • Anonymous

shut the fuck up you rick ross wannabe faggot

  • Jeffery

Can we get the stats on Lil Waynes "Rebirth" album? You guys listed the stats on his Carter 3 album for like 3 years but act like "Rebirth" never came out. It's possibly one of the most creative albums of this generation.

  • Anonymous

Anybody else notice there's nothing on that chart that sold over a million??

  • Jason Williams

I'm surprised Legendary Weapons even sold that much. I'm the only person I know who bought it or even knew it was released. I love the album it fits nicely in my collection of Wu artistry. Def. not one of my faves but solid and a str8 play through for me personally.

    • BIG FACE ITALY

I agree 100% dude. Many people dont have a clue that it dropped. I guess the Wu must push the promotion a bit more next round. But its a damn solid Wu compilation

  • D90

people need to start buyin that jay rock album... shit was fire

  • Big Dan

With album number 197 selling just 2,400 units, how many units did Black Rob move, or should I say failed to move? Last week, when he was knocking Diddy and his own song Whoa, I posted that he has a lot to learn in that he was not going to be selling anything on Duck Down and will not be seeing any royalty checks. I did not expect it would be this bad. BR, please go do them shows. We know when your pockets get empty, you thinking you need to go rob and steal, but you don't want to go do another jail term son. Do them shows, save your money and start thinking retirement, as in put money away for when you are 60.

  • wouzi

CONGRATS TO B.I.G SEAN DON FOR STILL BEEN ON THE CHART.

    • BIG FACE ITALY

LMAO.... still B. Sean sounds the exact same as Drake. Dudes both make Girlfriend music

    • Anonymous

I LOVE HOW THE ONLY RESPONSE PEOPLE HAVE TO DEFEND ARTISTS IS "HATER" AND "YOU JUST MAD THEY GETTIN MONEY" OH AND NICE CAPS. (oh and btw i dont hate Big Sean i just hate the use of the word hater.)

    • wouzi

DAMN!!!! BRUH I DONT KNOW WHY PEOPLE HATE BIG SEAN SO MUCH, DUDE NEVER DISRESPECT ANY BODY BUT PEOPLE ALWAYS WANNA DISRESPECT THIS DUDE. Y'ALL KEEP HATING AND HE'S GETTING MORE ENDORSEMENT DEALS. THAT MEANS DUDE IS GETTING MORE $$$ AND HOW LIVING @ YA GRANDMA BASEMENT.
