Jay-Z Denies Beef With Kanye West Over Tour, Calls Him A "Genius"

Hov slams earlier reports that 'Ye wanted to go overboard with the budget for their upcoming tour as The Throne.

With his and Kanye West’s new album Watch the Throne landing in stores on August 8th, Jay-Z popped into Hot 97’s New York studios for an impromptu interview with Angie Martinez. Speaking with the radio hostess, Hov denied reports today that he and ‘Ye were beefing over a tour budget.

“Kanye is a genius. I kind of want to spend a gazillion dollars,” he said, contradicting reports that Yeezy had no respect for the money aspect of their tour as The Throne. “I think they got it backwards, but it’s all good. I made it. I don’t really... I know that we doing something right now. When I woke up to all of that, I was like, oh yeah, we must be really hot right now. This is really happening. August 8th.”

It hasn’t always been smooth sailing with ‘Ye, though, as Jay explains that they sometimes snap on each other in the studio. But as far as letting their emotions get the best of them, he says nothing could break their bond.

“Yes, we get on each other’s nerves. But that’s part of pushing each other. We push each other. The people that have a problem with Kanye or myself are people who are complacent in life. People don’t like to be pushed. It’s like annoying. It’s a thing when people are pushing you to be greater, and we push each other to be greater. So of course there are times when we’re in the studio and we’re yelling, but that’s about it. I would never disrespect that man. I have so much respect for him.”

He also jested about his collaborative project with R. Kelly, Best of Both Worlds, which ended in a bitter legal battle after a Jay associate maced Kellz backstage.

“Yeah, that was a tough one. But it’s almost like anything in life. You can’t let that situation affect you going forward,” he said. “Especially working with genius talent. He is a genius talent. It’s just that he has other things on his mind.”

As for the pressure to deliver a classic with Watch the Throne, the Roc Nation chief admitted that he felt some heat.

“I guess a bit after we started it, but I don’t look at it like that. When you make music, you’re against history, you’re against what’s current and you’re against past work. But as far as pressure of what it’s going to sound like, you try not to really let that affect you,” he said. “You have to have a bit of arrogance to say that this is going to be good.”

Listen to the full interview below, where he also speaks on indie record shops being upset about the album's rollout, meeting President Obama and J. Cole's upcoming debut.

Not really related to this article, if Nas had being killed post illmatic in similar circumstances to 2pac/Biggie, he would have been hailed as the greatest mc ever, above the aforementioned, we dont know whether big and pac would have sold out i.e. Jay Z. Nas still speaks truth, the point is Nas should be respected as better than Pac/Big as hes proven over time hes still real. Anyone agree?!

    • aarontodavis

I guess Nas/Jay r like Pac vs BIG cuz almost every Jay-Z or Nas headline there's always ppl comparing the two..Jay took the commercial route while Nas has stayed more street. When Jay wants to make street records he can and when Nas wants to make pop records he can..Jus appreciate them both and wat they've done for hip-hop instead of comparing them all the time

    • Josh

What about Lost Tapes 2? That he didnt release it as an album to sell, when he could have done a free mixtape? Comachonvargas, my point exactly thank u.

    • Anonymous

Yeah, because he FAILED to sell out. That is true, otherwise you're delusional. Real? What's with Lost Tapes 2? I thought he's all for HipHop? What's so about putting a mixtape that consists of old tracks out? Especially if you're such a big artist like Nas?

    • comachonvargas

100% Josh. It took Jay only 2 albums to sell out [Vol. 1] and though Nas has experimented with commercial hip hop [I am/Nastradamus], he never sold out after 20+ years and 10+ albums. Assuming that big/pac would have stayed around and remained real as long as Nas has is a VERY generous assumption. Therefore I think I have to say NAS=GOAT

How many sons has he switched his flow up? When will he stop talking about drug dealing, haing soo much money and nice things and start talking about real shit? Its been over fifteen years jay, real shit happens sometimes. this motherfucker has never talked about anything but fantasy "you're a pc im a mac" that probably the most earthly shit this fool has said and its a very very weak line. and for the record this camel has been 41 for like 7 yrs now. Fuck you if you like jay-z...yeah I said it.

illll at jbenjamins sign off haha, Illmatic > Reasonable Doubt, Blueprint > it was written. All genuine classics. ('what goes around' is most underrated track ever in hip hop btw) Jay - flow and wit, Nas - flow and lyricism. Fuk u long rant ass emos.

    • Anonymous

Illmatic > Everything Jay has done. Resonable Doubt, The Blueprint, The Black Album & American Gangster > Anything Nas has done since Illmatic. I like Nas, but he can't battle for shit, let's be serious. All his tracks towards Jay were whack, unoriginal and rant full of childish insults. Sorry, I can't name someone who uses ''Gay-Z'', ''Cock-A-Fella'' and ''Camel'' the greatest lyricist. Both of Jay's tracks were filled with pure facts. ''Youse the fag model for Karl Kani/Esco ads Went from, Nasty Nas to Esco's trash Had a spark when you started but now you're just garbage Fell from top ten to not mentioned at all to your bodyguard's "Oochie Wally" verse better than yours Matter fact you had the worst flow on the whole fuckin song but I know - the sun don't shine, then son don't shine That's why your - LAAAAAAAME! - career come to a end There's only so long fake thugs can pretend Nigga; you ain't live it you witnessed it from your folks pad You scribbled in your notepad and created your life I showed you your first tec on tour with Large Professor (Me, that's who!) Then I heard your album bout your tec on the dresser'' ''So yeah I sampled your voice, you was usin it wrong You made it a hot line, I made it a hot song'' ''That's one every let's say two, two of them shits was due One was - NAHHH, the other was "Illmatic" That's a one hot album every ten year average And that's so - LAAAAAAAME! Nigga switch up your flow Your shit is garbage, but you try and kick knowledge?'' ''Kick yo little lies I kick my real facts Like u sneakin out tha back At tha Source Soundlab(uh) We wasnt chasin you We had a tape and too We came through to do our little one, two thang It wasnt a rockafella come through thing If it was on like that Why would I come through Queens Yo, ya'll Queens nigga know how I do I got mo' shooters in Queens Bridge than u Niggaz'll(niggaz will) tie you up on the Colloseum roof And open beer bottles off ya boy's chipped tooth Look Here'' ''Me and tha boy A.I. got more in Common than just ballin and rhymin Get It? More in Carmen I came in ya Bentley backseat Skeeted in Jeep Left condoms in tha baby seat Here nigga Tha gloves is off The love is done Its whateva, wheneva, howeva Nigga "1" And since you infatuated with sayin tha gay shit Yes u was kissin my dick when u was kissin that bitch Crazy bitch You thought I was boning Ranette You calling Carm' a hundred times I was boning her neck You got a baby by that broad You cant disown her yet When does ya lies end? When does the truth begin? When does reality set it? Or does it not matter Gotta hurt that I'm ya baby mama's favorite rapper And ask your current girl She know whats up Holla at a real nigga'' Jay and vivid? Did you listen to RD? Vol. 1? The Blueprint? The Black Album? Some tracks on Kingdom Come and American Gangster? Nas tells stories about other or made up persons, see ''witnessed it from your folks pad'', Jay tells stories about himself, it's up to the listener what he prefers (Meet The Parents is up there with Nas' best storytellings), shows you how versatile Jay is. And anyone who calls Nas the greatest storyteller hasn't heard about G Rap. Everyone seems to be forgetting about absolute sick songs like D'Evils, Imaginary Player, Lyrical Excersice and Fallin', that's lyrical brilliance right there. Since when is worldplay a made up criteria? That's an element of hip hop. I always prefered artists who were able to tell stories without dumbing down their ryhme scheme. It's much easier to tell stories like Nas does, where dumbs down his rhyme schemes and doesn't come up with dope metaphors. Much harder to tell stories WHILE using metaphors and double-entendres. Jay won, plain and simple. Nas, the real rappper, who sings to his former enemy. LMAO. No self esteem. I guess ideologies doun't count when the money is there for Nas, huh? Jay fucked him up on Black Republican & Success where he clearly displayed that he is, as rapper, far superior to Nas.

    • jbenjamin

I usually don't comment, because i just come 2 hear the music and the newest hip hop I love, but I GOTTA let people know from time 2 time... this bein one of those times. okay 2 start "do you listen 2 music or do you just skim through it" is still okay 2 be used because it's a classic line on a classic song, that makes it timeless son, next you say "jay doesn't have intricate stories" but he admits 2 that, he says he draws his lyrics from real life inspirations and 99 problems seems 2 be an okay story, then you say HE DOESN'T SWITCH HIS FLOW??????????????????????????? ARE YOU DEF?????????????LOL even rappers that don't like him like jim jones admit 2 the flow, and there's a reason why everyone in the hip hop world was shocked when Eminem had a better flow than jay on renegade, it's because his flow along with word play made him,but now they understand because Em is the greatest, but back 2 the topic, why does he keep talkin bout drugs, money etc... BECAUSE THAT'S WHAT HIS LIFE HAS BEEN ABOUT SIR, and that's real, but if you need the real shit I think ur talkin bout see (song cry,December 4th,this can't be life, and a ton of other songs just do ur research son)now Im done with you,"and 2 you other fools that got a problem wit jigga/ you only get half a bar fuck yall ni**gaz.

    • two4sev

If it's over for Jay then why this man still goes platnium? lol Sales talk popularity, Popularity talks relevancy, relevancy at 41 in Hip Hop means the G.O.A.T. Most rappers window is 3 to 5 years this dude has been in the forefront since 97. Oh and super Ugly was better then either...Real Talk all Nas did was call him Camel, called him ugly, and said he was Gay-Z but Jay broke something off in his baby mother, real recognize real once you bring that into the public...Game over! After all the hip hop world should want this man to succeed especially NY because if he doesn't the door is closed! From a business stand point.

    • comachonvargas

Anonymous Stillmatic freestyle obliterates supa ugly takeover and blueprint 2. No need to even mention Ether. Nas talks wanna be knowledge? Nas peaked after illmatic? Nas has wack after wack albums? MORON... no need to get into details Jay has been rapping about coke, hoes, paper since RD and retards like you really convince yourself that he is DEEP... and that punchline/double-entendre bullshit is some fabricated criteria you invented to push up Jay and put down Nas whenever possible... Nas is the master of CINEMATIC LYRICISM... No one can paint a picture like him... no gay ass punchlines needed either Jay has really progressed all right... from ridin Jaz to Kane to Irv to Big to Nas to Kanye... please. Jay post-black album has basically negated his classics in my book... and Untitled is better than BP3, AG, Kingdom Come You cant call Nas whack plain and simple. Seriously. Even if you were right that he peaked after making the greatest hip hop album ever, guess what? THAT PEAK HAS NOT BEEN SURPASSED BY ANY ARTIST SINCE THAT ALBUM DROPPED... INCLUDING JAY Nasty and Ghetto Dreams shit all over Otis/HAM... did you really compare Nas to Gucci Mane? No need to continue

Supa Ugly >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Ether, Destroy & Rebuild & Last Real Nigga Alive combined. Yeah, he talks about that from the outside, it seems that way because his lyrics go way over your head. What does Nas do? Talking wanna be knowledge without facts to back it up? Anything Nas has said in terms of political or historical themes was absolute bullshit and totally black/white/good/evil etc. It held NO value. and you might get better political discussions on your average schoolyard. Untitled sucked, it was one of the worst records I've ever heard in my life. The beats sucked, the flow/delivery sucked, he presented the subject matter in a preachy way and basically said nothing. Don't need to mention that he is ALWAYS way off when he talks about history. It's Nas gimmick to act like a messiah and stupid people like you believe him even if he basically don't got more knowledge than a 15 year old who reads wikipedia articles. Jay doesn't act like the rap/world leader. This nigga knows NOTHING about things that are relevant. I've seen better comments on YouTube. Jay IS one of the absolute best storytellers, it's just that he ain't doing it an an obvious matter like Nas, where a blind man can tell the difference between good and evil. You're really talking about Jay switching his flow up? Damn, we're talking about one of the most amazing flowers in the history of rap. You can claim anything, but saying his flow is nothing special, is baseless hating. Nas is just whack, plain and simple. He peaked on his debut and is a former shell of himself, while Jay progressed (aware of the fact that he couldn't duplicate his debut), moved on and released 3 more classics. What's up with Nasty and Ghetto Dreams? It's not that he talks about nothing (he talks about nothing on his ''deep'' either, but both are generic as fuck, if he even had clever punchlines or complex rhyme-schemes, but he can't come with them without sounding way too corny (''timbs yellow like the hair on a malibu surfer'', seriously this is Gucci Mane level) And this is the guy some of you call the greatest of all time? This sums Nas up: Gimmick after gimmick, complaint after complaint, and wack album after wack album. Fuck Nas, you've lost me as a fan, and I was one of your biggest. I'm going back to listen to God's Son. This motherfucker makes me depressed with how he's fallen off. Jay = greatest flow, best metaphors and double-entendres, best flow, deepest lyrics, most well-rounded discography and greatest impact. Without a doubt the GOAT.

Nas never keeps it real just listen to his music from illmatic to D.R. His style changes constantly not the flow the style. Jay has been Jay from 96 to 2011. All this argument about who needs who that's so immature.Neither man needs the other to stand on his own two. Plus all the debate about is Jay relevant just look at the sales and please before anyone say sales don't matter trust and believe it does. Maybe you as an individual don't like him but fans across the globe do. I honestly believe there are several artist better then Jay but in my opinion he's definitely a legend. I don't know about best of all time but definitely in the trinity

    • Anonymous

Nas and better lyrically? Since when? Nas' lyrics are way too simple and obvious. Do you fools listen to music or do youjust skim through it? ''And y'all buy the shit, caught up in the hype Cause the nigga wear a kufi, it don't mean that he bright Cause you don't understand him, it don't mean that he nice It just means you don't understand all the bullshit that he write Is it "Oochie Wally Wally" or is it "One Mic"? Is it "Black Girl Lost" or shorty owe you for ice? I've been real all my life, they confuse it with conceit''.

    • Wtf?

What's wrong with changing style? It's called progression as an artist. Jay is a legend but so is Nas. Jay is more relevant but Nas is better lyrically.

    • Ryan MacQueston

doesn't change the fact Illmatic > Jay-Z's entire discography. & fuck off, all of Nas' shitty albums since Street's Disciple are better then Jay-Z's from that point forward

    • Anonymous

Co-Sign. He progressed as an artist, because he's the better musician and the better rapper, his intelligence can't be touched in this business. Some of his lines are out of this world on EVERY album, Nas couldn't come with those crazy stuff in 10 years from now. Jay got the most skills, fucked with the best of em and got, without the a doubt, the most well rounded and most timeless discography ever. Which makes him the GOAT. Nas @ real hip hop. The guy who can't drop an album without 10 gimmicks surrounding him, wait til you read the news where changes his album title to something more controversial. The real guy who's all who for his fans and hip hop, that dropped Lost Tapes 2 without a second thought for his fans. LMAO. Only Nas fans are that delusional.

Em might be even, but Nas? NO WAY! I hate that baseless opinion people get from blogs or youtube comments, because it's the cool thing to go with the underdog. His skills aren't impressing enough, where Em and Jay have one of the sharpest skillsets of all time.

    • Anonymous

Mob: You think Jay is not respected ? He is, but there are better Mc's like Nas and Em who never gets the respect.

    • Taon Sauls

You have to realize for whatever reason rap music doesn't have the same type of appreciate for their legends as other genres of music. Paul Mccartney could come out with an album and no one would say anything. But in hip hop the only legends that artist and fans respect are the ones that aren't any competition to their current favorite artist. Biggie, Tupac and Big Pun get respect because they are not competing with current artist. When Biggie was alive there was tension between him , Nas and Mobb Deep and Pac almost seemed to beef with everyone. Yea Dr Dre gets respect but his a 40 plus year old producer he is not a threat to current rappers. And does Eminem really gets as much respect as he deserves ? How many rappers are bigging up em? How many times have you heard a rapper give their top 5 rappers dead or alive list and you heard them mention em? Eminem separates himself from other rappers which causes him not to get disrespect as much or to get the respect he deserves.

    • death

I don't respect Jay because he's got no integrity. Mofo shot his OWN BROTHER when he was 11 over drugs. I don't like the man. I respect his hustle but I dont like it. How you gonna say rap legends don't get respect? Tupac, Biggie, Pimp C - rap pays so much tribute to its legends it's almost bad! Too bad they don't imitate the legends. Hell, we even honor the living legends. Dr. Dre, Eminem, and if you haven't noticed, even Jay-Z ! He's around the top of the Forbes hip hop list and sells fuck tons of records and makes hot radio hits. How you gonna say he's not respected?

Not real? What is Moment Of Clarity then? Real is staying true to yourself, Jay ALWAYS did that, admitting that he wanted to make it big since the beginning while Nas needed any gimmick he can think of, til it didn't work anymore, anything was perfect, he failed to sell out several times and could sell that real hip hop idead shit to you. Go gisten to his songs and get all wet while your idol thinks he's a modern poet because he uses words like ''clouds'' and ''dark skies'' in his simple ass shit.

Kanye is hilariously far from being a musical genius Mu you dumb fuck. It doesn't take a genius to take a beat someone sent you, then maybe put one sample on it, then have Mike Dean come in and make the shit bang. If anything, Mike Dean is the genius in this equation. There a very, very few hip-hop producers worthy of being called "musical geniuses"...but If there are, they are the few who created and innovated styles. i.e. J Dilla, Marley Marl, Premier, etc.

DOOM? An ugly, overweight guy who lets imposers do his concerts because he rans out of breath too fast. He made an impact on 2000 broke and ugly backpackers who read comics and get no bitches. Plus, he wouldn't even get half the attention without the mask.

"And if you dispute the fact that Ye's a musical genuis, name some artists that have been more creative and innovative with their sound over the last decade and has pushed the boundaries of hip-Hop. I DARE You..." Come on, you serious? DOOM.

As far as naming anybody thats dont what Kanye has done in recent times thats impossible. If this were the 90's when you had labels everywhere and hip hop selling like crazy it would be different...But the last 10 yrs have consisted of 4-5 rappers at the top selecting who gets to blow up next....Then you have a small handful of people that figured out how to hustle myspace/youtube to blow their careers up in the same time...But you're pretty much not breaking into the mainstream unless one of the top acts cosigns you at this point. And that makes it pretty hard to compare Kanye to anybody else when hip hop music is run like a good ole boys country club.

Nobodys denying that Kanye is good at music....But you can find 100,000 other people at any given moment that can run laps around Kanye on a drum machine. And about 50,000 of those can probably outrap Kanye to cause he's always been borderline garbage on the mic. Kanye fans are some of the most sensitive people on Earth.

    • Mu

Hip-Hop fans are the most fickle muhfuckas on the face of the earth. First.. Jay meant that Kanye's a genius in HIS profession. Nobody said he was a fucking science mastermind. And if you dispute the fact that Ye's a musical genuis, name some artists that have been more creative and innovative with their sound over the last decade and has pushed the boundaries of hip-Hop. I DARE You...

Anonymous... You are a genius for that comment.

    • Ddot

Haha! Thank you! I been thinkin that this whole time. Bach, Einstein, Freud...these are the definition of geniuses. Not some loudmouth douchebag that makes pop music.

Are you afraid to speak you mind Jigga?

  • e.

jay needs kanye a lot more than kanye needs jay the sooner ye realizes this, the better

MBDTF is not a classic in any way, not in a long shot or even an overstretch. Genius Production with uninspired lyrics....HIP HOP IS NOT PRODUCTION, HIP HOP IS LYRICS, RHYMES, WORDPLAY, METAPHORS, CONTENT, SUBJECT MATTER, PUNCHLINES, JOKES, Etc Etc.

Nas stayed true? Do you remember the albums between Illmatic and Stillmatic?

    • Kenneth Thomas

The dude that said Nas fell off should kill himself.

    • PTrippz

I dont see when Nas fell off really; Thief's Theme was one of the dopest songs... His "Untitled" Album was wack.... Anyways NAS helped launch JAY into super stardom by his famous diss. Hate on my dick

    • Fuck you

Nas fell off after illmatic but would still kill Jay in a battle. Oh yeah b4 I forget Distant Relatives>>>>>>Blueprint 3.

    • Philip

Jay only put Kanye on because he knew in the long run it would benefit him. But Kanye would have made it regardless.

    • Killintheseniggas

Jay put Kanye on. Without Jay, Kanye would be at Rawkus Records. Learn the fucking facts. And Nas fell off after illmatic. Jay is still at the top/

    • KanyeWest

Co-Sign your co-sign. Last time I remember Jay releasing a raw album was The Black Album. If you look at all his history, he always just tried to keep up with the times. Now look at other Rappers like Nas who stayed true, look at Nas, he always kept his style. So props to real rappers. And Fuck rappers like Jay-Z. P.S The Blueprint 63 coming out in September.

    • JiggaNigga

Co-sign. Jay does need Ye right now. Maybe 5 years ago Ye needed Jay but Ye is big time now hes signing artist to G.O.O.D music left n right. Jay needs Ye to keep up with the times because Jay has alot of oldschool in him and unfortunately the oldschool hiphop is dying.

    • Alexander Foes

Kanye never needed Jay-Z and to the comment a few above..... MAKE YOUR OWN FUCKING OPINIONS DONT JUST SAY WHAT DUMB ASS BLOGS SAY......MTDBF was the highest rated on blogs, but definitely not the Album of the Year....I heard mixtapes better than that.... Great production, but shitty songs......Still, we are in a shitty economy, its not his fault he didnt sell a lot.

    • bob

Ye said that he couldn't find sponsor for his dark fantasy tour so i'm pretty sure he needs jay only from business point of view. And even tho people don't like it BP3 is almost at 2millions in the us only and plat in the uk on the other hand mbdtf is 1 million in the us and silver in the uk.

creatively, yes i'll say that kanye brings the best of jay, and he gets alot of energy from kanye, but as far as staying relevant, kanye needs jay more right now, kanye last album MBDTF was a genius album indeed, highest rated album last year, but as far as numbers, and impact, didnt do that good,(due to the whole taylor swift),kanye lost alot of fans, jay last album BP3 got 5 grammys, went 4 times platinum, and they still play songs from that album on the radio, (empire state) (on to the next) so jay has more relevance, in my eyes

    • guerilla jones

both of you sound like fools, there is no who needs who more, jay z can command whatever producer he wants, old or new and Kanye has made everyone respect him weather its the producing or rapping, they seem to be in a good place collectivly, you sound like some clowns.

    • xYeezyDaChefx

Even though i have much respect for jay-z and he was his own man before he met kanye...your comment is TRUTH! thank you so much for saying that....
