Naughty by Nature included their 1992 track “Uptown Anthem”
“I didn’t want to put out ‘Uptown Anthem.’ I didn’t feel like the beat was ready yet, and [Treach] was like man, you crazy?” Kay Gee told Hip Hop Chronicle UK. “It wasn’t the song, it was the beat. When we were doing the song, the soundtrack, we were going through beats and he was like, ‘That’s it!’ and I was like, ‘I don’t know, that ain’t ready.’ He was like, ‘Nah, this is it.’”
Vin Rock recently faced a similar situation with the instrumental for “God is Love” off of the group’s 20th anniversary record Anthem Inc., but came to love it once he heard Treach’s rhymes on it.
“There’s a new one now on our 20th anniversary record, Anthem Inc., there was a track that Kay pulled up that I didn’t like. I would never like it, I never heard it. Heard of this just being a hot track, but then Treach rhymed on it and it’s a song called ‘God is Love’ and that’s hands-down my favorite track on the album.”
